Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
A/N: Yes, Ino’s character is such a bitch just for my storyline. I really don’t have any personal vendetta against either her or Sakura. They just happen to be annoying and flat out mean for the story. I promise. :) Anyway, I’m glad people are still enjoying this story, and I’m glad I’ve been able to get updates out relatively consistently. There’s a lot that happens in this chapter. Enjoy and let me know what you think, if you feel like it.
Chapter Five – The First Ninja Party
Shikamaru stared at Neji as he opened the door. Neji was dressed in a black dress shirt and white jeans, and it looked gorgeous on his body. The jeans were just tight enough to show his most flattering assets. The dress shirt was loose enough not to reveal how toned Neji was, but was a flattering contrast to his pale skin. His hair was loose and hung straight over his shoulders. “You look good, Neji.”
Neji smiled. Shikamaru was dressed in his standard “civilian” uniform of faded loose fitting jeans and a black tank top. His hair was up in its usual lazy pony tail. He looked edible. “You too.” He opened his door and let Shikamaru in. “Are we waiting for Chou and Shino before we go over?”
Shika nodded. “Yeah. Who set up this party again? Is it that big a deal that we all made it through our first mission alive? They aren’t even hard missions. I haven’t even left the village yet.” He was nervous. It had been a month since they all were put on teams. He really hadn’t seen Sasuke since then, but Sasuke would at least have to make an appearance tonight.
Neji nodded. “They did it for us, too. It’s a ritual. Mostly I think it’s an excuse for all the older shinobi to get wasted. They usually end up playing make out games or just grabbing someone they have a crush on and stealing a room.”
Shikamaru smirked. “Who started this tradition?”
Neji laughed. “I think it was Kakashi. These days though, Kakashi only has eyes for Iruka.” Shikamaru smiled and nodded. Only a few people in their class had noticed the interaction between the two, but he was one of them. Neji smiled as he felt Chouji and Shino’s chakra signatures at his door. “So, you ready to go?”
Shikamaru shrugged. “Whatever. Let’s just get it done with.” He waited for Neji to take his outstretched hand before they headed out Neji’s door. Chouji had his hand up to knock on the door. “Let’s go,” Shikamaru ordered as the small group turned toward the Academy.
Neji stopped as he heard Naruto’s voice. “So, is this still just really close friends hands holding or have you hooked up?”
Shikamaru smiled. “Hello, Naruto. I hate to disappoint you, but it’s just really close friends.” Naruto smiled. He’d kind of hoped that Neji and Shikamaru would hook up. After making his apology to Shikamaru, he’d hung out with the group a few times. Apparently the desire for the friends to get together was thick in the group. He also realized he liked this group a lot. He’d started saying hi when they saw each other around in the streets.
Naruto shrugged. “Well, let me know when that changes.” He waved as he ran ahead of them.
Shino spoke calmly, though his usually cool voice had a hint of emotion in it. “I never thought I’d like Naruto.” Neji nodded in agreement. They walked silently toward the academy. Shikamaru tensed just a minute before he relaxed in Neji’s grip. He took a deep breath and opened the doors of the academy.
The music hadn’t started yet, but the DJ had just finished setting up so it would be happening soon. Shikamaru sighed. “Troublesome.” He let his eyes slide across the crowd, noting Naruto standing next to Sasuke. Sasuke looked good in black jeans and a dark blue t-shirt. A faint smile graced Shikamaru’s mouth. Sasuke looked relaxed and relatively happy talking with Naruto. He was glad that Sasuke was no longer completely devastated.
Shino smirked. “I’m going to get some punch with Chouji. Why don’t you two go find us all a spot to sit?” Neji nodded and drug Shikamaru toward a table somewhat near Sasuke. He didn’t want to be too close, but he knew it would mean a lot to Shikamaru if Sasuke managed to say hi to him, as friends.
Shikamaru shrugged as they sat down. The music started playing, and the lights of the academy were turned off. Instead, colored stage lights began to flash around the room. He sighed and groaned down at his table. “This is troublesome.”
Naruto laughed, hearing Shikamaru say troublesome. Sasuke wanted to have a conversation with Shikamaru, but couldn’t bring himself to come over with everyone around. He’d sent Naruto to gather Shikamaru. “Shika, I need to borrow you for a few minutes.”
Shikamaru looked at Naruto before nodding. He stood up, casting a soft smile to Neji. He leaned down and whispered in Neji’s ear to be sure he’d be heard over the music. “I’ll be back after Sasuke says what he needs to.” Neji nodded and waved a little.
Naruto led Shikamaru up to the roof. “You knew it was him that wanted you, huh?” Shikamaru nodded. Naruto sighed. “Just hear him out okay? It would really bother him if you didn’t give him the time of day.”
Shikamaru nodded and smiled as Sasuke came into view. They had such a long history. He couldn’t really stop the small flutter of his heart. His voice, thankfully, managed to stay strong. “What is it, Sasuke?”
Naruto smirked and started backing away. “I’ll leave you two alone. Just remember that you’ll have to get back downstairs at some point, or people will worry.” Naruto left the roof, leaving Sasuke and Shikamaru looking at each other.
Shikamaru smiled softly. “How have you been?”
Sasuke shrugged, scowling. The scowl didn’t reach his eyes though, and Shikamaru noticed. “I was better when I had you.” He held a hand up at the look on Shikamaru’s face. “I know it was my fault. I didn’t realize what a good thing I had in you until it was too late.”
Shikamaru nodded. “I’ve missed you; if that is any consolation.” He bit back the tears. He’d grieved Sasuke for a long time, but talking like nothing had happened was so hard. He sat down on the edge of the roof. “What did you want to talk about?”
Sasuke sighed. “I wanted to tell you that I’m going to tell my family about my preference tonight. I don’t care how they react. I’m also going to tell Sakura and Ino about you. I just-I don’t know. I wanted you to tell me if you are comfortable with that. I don’t want to do anything more to hurt you than I all ready have.”
Shikamaru smiled. He nodded slightly. “Thank you, Sasuke. You have no idea how much it means to me.” He smirked as he stood up. “Want to go have one dance, as friends, for old time’s sake?”
Sasuke smiled softly, keeping his tears at bay. “I’d like that.” He smiled as Shikamaru put an arm around his shoulders. They walked down the stairs together. Neji sighed a little when he saw how cozy they looked. He had hoped Shikamaru wouldn’t get back together with Sasuke, but that wasn’t how they looked right now. Naruto smiled. Sasuke looked more relaxed than he had in a long time.
Sasuke smiled as Shikamaru pulled him onto the dance floor. The DJ was playing some slow song neither boy recognized. Sasuke wrapped his hands around Shikamaru’s waist and put his head on Shikamaru’s shoulder. At the same time, Shikamaru wrapped his arms around Sasuke’s neck. Slowly the rest of the shinobi turned to see the strange pair. The people who had been in their class looked on in surprise at the supposed rapist and his supposed victim dancing very comfortably together. Shikaku sighed, hoping this wasn’t just more heartbreak for his son. Sasuke’s family took a while to notice, and Itachi almost let the smile through he was feeling.
Fugaku, however, stormed over to his son and the man he was dancing with. “Sasuke, what the hell is this? Why are dancing with this piece of trash?”
Sasuke glared at his father. “Because I finally realized I don’t care what you think. I’m never going to be Itachi; what’s the point of trying to make you see me or see that?” He took a deep breath and turned steady, determined eyes toward his father. “I’m gay, Dad. Shikamaru and I were dating for almost a year when he broke up with me. I deserved it because I didn’t deserve someone who was so patient with everything I put him through.”
Fugaku glared at his son, seething at the fact that his youngest was making a scene. There was no way an Uchiha didn’t do what they were supposed to. Uchiha’s were supposed to marry women and make babies. That was the way to keep the clan in a position of power within the community. “Sasuke, you will stop this nonsense right now.”
Sasuke glared at his father. “I got an apartment last night. I don’t plan on going back to your house tonight or ever. I’m not going to keep killing myself to break out of Itachi’s shadow in your eyes. I’ll never be good enough for you. I don’t care about your money. I don’t care about our name. I don’t care if you disown me because I prefer men and can’t stand women. I should have said all of this while I still had a chance to keep the most wonderful man I’ve ever met.” His eyes soften as he glanced at a blushing Shikamaru. “He was so patient with me. He never forced me to say something I wasn’t ready to say. He hated keeping his love a secret, but he did it to keep me happy and safe. Well, I’m not going to do that when I find someone else who is capable of loving me.”
Fugaku huffed. He was not going to be treated this way be a son who wanted nothing to do with the family. “Fine. Consider yourself disowned.” He walked away, back to Itachi, who gave Sasuke a soft smile. He’d always wanted the boy to stand up for himself.
The music and the party started again. Shikamaru held tight to Sasuke’s hand. “Thank you, Sasuke.” He leaned down and kissed Sasuke’s cheek. He saw Naruto walking up to Sasuke. “Just remember I’m here if you ever need to talk. I think Naruto wants to dance now.”
Sasuke saw Naruto walking toward them. He smiled up at Shikamaru before softly pressing his lips to Shikamaru’s in a chaste kiss. “Goodbye, Shikamaru. I wanted to win you back, but I can see now that isn’t an option. I won’t give in to the Uchiha possessiveness.” Sasuke let go and turned toward Naruto, smirked plastered on his face. “Come to gloat, dobe?”
Shikamaru went to Neji. “I think I’m going to be okay,” he said as he slid into the chair next to his best friend. “Sasuke’s kind of inspired me though.”
Neji cocked his eyebrow. “Oh, how’s that?” Neji was screaming internally. He couldn’t believe Shikamaru and Sasuke would kiss in front of all these people. He especially didn’t see it happening since they had broken up. He couldn’t help the small, jealous sigh that escaped his lips.
Shikamaru swallowed hard. He hoped their friendship was strong enough to withstand this admission if Neji didn’t feel the same way. He leaned closer to Neji, grabbing the man’s hand, before lightly pressing his lips to Neji’s. Neji was stunned, his body failing to react right away. Shikamaru pulled away with a bit of hurt evident in his eyes as he shrugged. “We can still be friends, right?”
Still Neji was too stunned to react. What he had been dreaming of for years was suddenly right in front of him. Shikamaru kissed him. He couldn’t think of anything else. Shikamaru had kissed him. Neji stood up, finally breaking free from his stupor, as Shikamaru started making his way for the door. He popped up next to Shikamaru as he reached for the door. Neji grabbed his friend’s shirt and pulled the younger man’s lips to his. He smiled softly as they broke apart. “I’m sorry that I couldn’t respond right away. It’s just that I’ve cared for you for so long that I couldn’t believe it was really happening.”
Shikamaru smirked before wrapping his hands in Neji’s hair and pushing his lips against the soft, compliant lips of his friend. Shikamaru parted his lips and slid his tongue along Neji’s lips. That was all the encouragement Neji needed. He opened his mouth and let Shikamaru’s warm tongue explore his mouth. Finally breaking apart as the need for air became a necessity, Shikamaru smiled at Neji. “I wish you would have said something a long time ago. I wanted to date you before Sasuke asked me out. I just didn’t think you felt that way about me, too.”
Neji was about to answer when he heard a familiar voice from somewhere near to them, “Now, is that just really close friends making out or did you finally hook up?” Naruto chuckled with his question.
Neji sighed. “What do you think?”
Naruto pretended to think about it. “Really close friends making out?” He laughed as Neji rolled his eyes. “I’m kidding. I’m happy for you.”
Sasuke came up behind Naruto and sighed softly. “Me too. He deserves someone like you, Neji. But don’t think I won’t hurt you if you hurt him.”
Shikamaru groaned. “All of you do remember I’m standing right here, don’t you?” He smirked when he saw slightly flustered expressions on three of the other boys. “I’m taking Neji home. I hate parties. I’ve been here long enough. I want to go home, get in a game of shogi, and get to sleep.”
Sasuke nodded as Naruto clapped the boys on the back. “I guess we’ll see you two around then.”
Shikamaru smirked as Neji turned to leave. “So, just close friends or something more?”
Sasuke shook his head. “Just close friends.”
Naruto smiled. “At least for now.” He pulled Sasuke back to the room full of people with questions Sasuke was finally ready to answer.
Sasuke sighed as he sat down at a table with Naruto. “Did you really mean that at least for now comment? Do you want to be more than friends?”
Naruto shook his head. “Sorry, Sas. I don’t think about you that way. You’re like a brother.” He smiled when he saw relief on Sasuke’s face. “So I’m not your type either?”
Sasuke shook his head, smirking. “I like intelligent men.”
Naruto huffed. “I’m offended. I really should consider finding myself a new best friend.” He smirked as Sakura and Ino made their way over.
They had the decency to look a little sheepish. “I’m sorry, Sasuke,” Ino said quietly. “I shouldn’t have been so rude to Shikamaru. He’s really been patient with my attitude during missions and training. I’ll make things right; I promise.”
Sakura nodded. “I just never even thought you might be gay. I mean, you’re probably the best catch the town has.” She looked at her hands and sighed before throwing them around Sasuke’s neck. “Please don’t be mad at me, Sasuke-kun!”
Naruto stifled the laughter that wanted to make its way out. He kept it in for Sasuke’s sake. His best friend had all ready had to deal with so much that day. That wasn’t to say he wasn’t going to tease Sasuke about it mercilessly later. He’d just give the guy this one night.
Kiba saw the small group gathered around Sasuke and walked over. “Sasuke, that was quite the show tonight.” Sasuke sighed and rolled his eyes. Kiba laughed as he yanked Sakura off of Sasuke. “So, really, Shikamaru?”
Sasuke nodded. “He’s really great. I’d appreciate it if you could at least treat him with a little respect. He never did anything wrong.” He shot glares around the table to make sure people would listen to him, getting nods in response.
Sasuke avoided the dance floor. He didn’t want to deal with fan girls trying to make him straight or with fan boys trying to get in his pants. He just wanted to sit with his friends, who broke off once in a while to be with someone else or go dance, but always came back to sit with him. He glared at his father whenever possible. The man really was too much.
It came as a surprise when two hours later Itachi sat down at his table, after glaring everyone else away. “Little brother,” he smirked at the small drop in Sasuke’s mask.
Sasuke shrugged. “Itachi.” It was said with a cold indifference that wasn’t really in Sasuke’s heart. He knew Itachi never tried to take their father’s attention. He wanted his father to pay attention to Sasuke. It didn’t matter much though. Sasuke had still spent most of his life trying to outdo Itachi.
Itachi smiled. “Look, Sasuke, I know how you feel.” Sasuke ‘tched’ at Itachi’s words. Itachi smirked. “I’m glad you told dad off, finally. I hate being the center of Uchiha attention, but still I’d never give it up.” He clasped Sasuke’s shoulder lightly. “I have something for you later. Can I come by your new place?”
Sasuke shrugged. “You know where it is?”
Itachi nodded and winked. “Naruto isn’t very good at keeping secrets.” Sasuke mumbled an agreement. Itachi stood back up, noticing his fiancé not far away. “I’ll stop by tomorrow around noon, all right?” Sasuke nodded and watched as Itachi went to his woman, playing the role of model son. He really was an only son now that Sasuke was disowned. For some reason, being disowned and being on his own made Sasuke smile.
He glanced up as he noticed a small group of older shinobi standing not far away. He recognized them as some of Kakashi’s friends, though he didn’t know their names. Sasuke glanced around the room looking for his sensei. He stopped when he noticed Kakashi on the dance floor grinding someone who most definitely wasn’t Iruka. He shook his head, “Bastard.”
Naruto flopped down beside Sasuke, wiped out after his dance with Sakura. “Who’s a bastard?”
Sasuke pointed toward the dance floor. “Kakashi. He’s with Iruka now, right? So why’s he grinding on that chick?”
Naruto started laughing. “Sasuke, have you had much to drink?” Sasuke shrugged. He was most definitely drunk now, but he wouldn’t say that to Naruto. Naruto laughed again. “Sasuke, that’s Iruka. He’s just got his hair down.”
Sasuke squinted and peered back across the room. The pair turned and the unmistakable scar across Iruka’s nose caught Sasuke’s attention. He sat back and whistled, “Christ he’s pretty.” He watched as Iruka and Kakashi swayed across the floor. No one even gave them a second glance. It seemed that everyone was fine with their relationship. Why had he thought it would be otherwise with his own relationship? That’s when his eyes landed on his father, who was eyeing the couple with disgust. Right, that was why.
Sasuke sighed and pushed his chair back. “Naru, can you take me home? I don’t want to be alone. I’m having a bad night right now.”
Naruto smirked, but kept quiet. Sasuke had just told him that he couldn’t handle the night alone. Naruto nodded. “Come on, Sas. I shouldn’t have let you drink this much anyway.” He slung Sasuke’s arm over his shoulder and helped a, now that he was standing-or rather trying to stand, obviously intoxicated Sasuke to his feet.
*********
Shikamaru smiled as Neji crawled into his bed with a bowl of popcorn. They’d moved the TV into Shikamaru’s room, since his parents were still out at the party. Though his mother wasn’t a ninja, she always went with his father to ninja gatherings. They were planning on watching a good movie, one that requires a little bit of intelligence to watch and would keep them both entertained.
Neji smiled as he snuggled under Shikamaru’s arm. “What did you pick?”
Shikamaru shook his head. “Just watch and find out.” He pulled Neji closer, even if that wasn’t really possible. They put on Memento, but both were so tired that before the movie was even half way through, they had curled up under the blankets and fallen fast asleep. Shikamaru turned over in the middle of the night and wrapped his arms around Neji, just to make sure he was still there and couldn’t go anywhere.
The next morning, Neji smiled as he awoke to feeling of being wrapped in Shikamaru’s arms. It wasn’t the first time this had happened. Shikamaru often spooned him when he stayed the night. This was the first time it had happened after they had kissed. Though they hadn’t spoken as much the night before, he knew that Shikamaru would want to be a couple. Shikamaru never put effort into anything that wasn’t important. If he was going through the trouble of kissing Neji, he would want to date Neji.
