Chapter Six
It’d been a long time since the last time he felt this pissed off. Gaara wasn’t sure which thing he’d discovered annoyed him the most, but that wasn’t what he was concerned about, anyway. First finding out that Suzaki had been keeping things from her sensei and teammates was disturbing, though ignorable. Nobody could expect anyone to tell their team every last bit about them, and they completed missions fine as it was.
Perhaps it was coming back to see his personal space invaded, even if it was by a woman he found easy to forgive. Personal space, he reminded himself, that he’d told her not to enter. He wondered if it was because this was Gaara’s home, not the Kazekage’s, that she took some liberties -- and he had allowed her free roam and usage outside his bedroom. But it still wasn’t something he could easily look over.
Kissing her had been. . .unexpected, to say the least. He knew it was a bad idea to touch her; he knew how susceptible he was to her. His mind had been mapping out a conversation, maybe even an argument, actively trying to ignore the feel of her wrist when he’d grabbed it. Pressing her against the wall had been the downfall of that plan, he realized.
The look in her eyes had been one of fear, uncertainty. . .and a bit of passion, under the surface. He hadn’t noticed the latter until now, thinking it over. But that instant he saw she was frightened of him, or perhaps what he would do, and he’d lost the battle with himself.
He didn’t want her afraid of him, no matter what he did. He’d had plenty of time seeing people scared of him, left and right; he didn’t want any more of it. Especially not with Suzaki.
So he’d kissed her. He’d repeated this mistake time and again, only to find that he wasn’t learning any lesson. She ran from him every time, regardless of how long the kiss continued -- of how passionate they became. At this point it was the biggest mistake he could make in his personal life, to kiss her.
Even so, he licked his lips, remembering her taste longingly. Every last bit of her was desirable, practically calling out to him. It was incredibly difficult to resist her, and though he knew she felt the same desire for him, he just couldn’t get past a certain point with her. He wanted her so badly that even now, with her gone, he could still imagine what he would be doing to her now if only it hadn’t shattered.
He could almost taste her thighs, seeing himself lower to his knees to accomplish it. He could feel her stomach, his mental self spreading his fingers across it. His mind conjured an image of her, wrapping her legs about his waist. He shivered, thinking how pleasant it would be. Her hands on his back or shoulders, holding on tightly; her skin, her lips, her hair, her eyes, her voice, her breasts, her hips --
One image after another flitted by his eyes, teasing his senses. . .driving him mad, because he knew she wasn’t really here, they weren’t doing all those things he saw. Utterly frustrated, he grit his teeth and tore himself away from those thoughts, finally jerking away from the wall. He was more than agitated now, tense in more than one way. He wanted so much to go into her room and start doing all the things he’d just saw in his mind’s eye.
But he knew better. She would just run away again. He could almost see them, seconds before becoming one, and she would choose then to say she couldn’t. And if that truly happened. . . Maybe he really would go mad.
He had to leave, before he lost his mind altogether. All of the things he kept thinking about were maddening in one way or another, either drowning him in desire or shoving reality in his face. He was starting to think, as he left the house, that talking to Suzaki at all had been a bad idea. Pulling answers from her, offering help, suggesting she leave her parents’ home. . .
It was all a mistake, if this was the only thing that would follow. He almost saw the future then, a dreaded future, where they were constantly giving in and fighting one another. No, Suzaki was the only one who fought; if he had the chance to bed her, there wasn’t a thing that would keep him from doing it. Except her protests, of course.
God, he hated this.
He went to his office with a scowl, deeper than any frown he could have put on. He hoped, for the sake of mankind, that Suzaki was the only woman who could infuriate the man she loved like this. And that itself was shocking; she admitted she loved him, yet acted nothing like it, in his opinion. All of the other women who said they loved him practically threw themselves at him. Why was Suzaki so wary in comparison?
He was so death-bent on thinking about his frustrations that he didn’t notice taking a seat in his office and starting to work, nor did he see when Kankuro came in.
Not until Kankuro gave him a shove, anyway.
Snapping himself out of the haze he’d fallen into, he looked up. “Oh, Kankuro,” he acknowledged at last. “When did you arrive?”
“Ten minutes ago,” Kankuro answered, giving him a skeptical look. “I’m just guessing here, but looks like something big is on your mind.”
“You could say that,” Gaara replied, instantly thinking of Suzaki again. Then thinking of her naked, awaiting him. He shook his head, trying to drive off desire.
Kankuro’s expression changed to confusion. “Well, you never said what’s going on with you lately,” he started. “And I’ve seen the same girl at your house for a while now. Isn’t she Suzaki?”
“You know her, too?” Gaara asked, wondering about it.
“It’s hard not to notice her,” Kankuro offered. “She’s probably the village’s biggest beauty. But I’ve never spoken to her directly; never had an excuse good enough,” he added with a laugh. “Don’t tell me you seduced her.”
Gaara sighed. “I’ve tried.”
All at once Kankuro was interested. “So, spill the details, little brother. Why’s she at your house, and not leaving?”
Maybe, Gaara considered, this was what he needed: to tell someone about how damn stressed he was. While being around Suzaki had its pulls, as long as he didn’t touch her, he was more or less relaxed. It wasn’t unless they were apart, him thinking of her, or when they touched, that the fires began. And so, knowing Kankuro would listen without interruption, he told the story.
He opted for leaving out parts that were a little too private to be told, letting his brother think what he would, and ended with finding Suzaki in his room and his resulting anger. When he finished, Kankuro started laughing.
It made Gaara’s frustration return, and his eye twitched, something that rarely happened. “I don’t see what’s so funny,” he growled out.
Catching his breath, Kankuro threw him a grin. “They call that ‘obsession,’ Gaara. It’s not just being hot for Suzaki; more or less, you want to possess her.”
Oddly, he felt embarrassed about that. “I highly doubt that,” he argued. “I’m not an animal.”
“They say all men are animals,” Kankuro shot back. “It’s not a bad thing. A lot of girls like it.”
“Suzaki doesn’t,” Gaara pointed out. “And even if she did, what would have me do, bite her?”
Kankuro laughed again. “Let me put it this way: imagine some other guy starts asking her out on dates.”
He grit his jaw, feigning disinterest. “And?”
“And she goes,” Kankuro told him. “They stay out all night. She comes back wearing dirty clothes. And you know they didn’t go on a mission.”
Though he tried, he couldn’t stop the growl that escaped his throat, nor the way his hands fisted. “She wouldn’t,” he tried. “She’s in love with me.” Though unintended, he put a lot of emphasis on that last word. And it confused him a bit, hearing how rough his voice was, even to his own ears.
Kankuro grinned. “Jealous at just the thought of her with some other man,” he started, ticking off a finger, “defensive when someone suggests she doesn’t love you,” he ticked again, “you have the hots for her,” a third, “you can’t stop thinking about her, and you’re obsessing to the point where you don’t notice your aniki until he hits you.” He held up his hand, fingers spread. “Gaara, I think you might really be in love with her.”
Gaara looked down, at the edge of his desk.
“Hey, if she’s driving you mad, maybe you should do the same to her,” Kankuro offered.
Gaara scoffed. “Did I mention that whenever anything starts, she runs?”
“You need to take classes for understanding women,” Kankuro told him. “The only reason why she’s running is because she’s uncertain what you want. Well, besides the obvious,” he added with a laugh. “Y’know, I could ask Temari to talk to Suzaki. Then we can correspond and figure out what to do about you two.”
Gaara shook his head. “Are you saying I can’t figure this out on my own? I’m not a stranger to relationships, you know that.”
“Your ‘relationships’ last one night,” Kankuro shot back. “Suzaki knows that too, doesn’t she?”
Gaara frowned. “So what?”
Kankuro gave him a disbelieving look. “And you expect her to forget about it? Did she tell you how long she’s been in love with you?”
He sighed. “Not the exact date. But I get the feeling it’s more than just recent.”
“So she’s loved you a long time,” Kankuro pointed out. “She’s loved just you. While at the same time, you were off frolicking with various girls. Don’t you think that’d bother her?”
He hadn’t thought of that. “Maybe.”
“Of course it would; don’t be stupid. Look, whether you want to admit it or not, you need help to figure this out. I’m gonna have Temari talk to her.”
“Didn’t I tell you not to do that?” Gaara snapped.
“Apparently,” Kankuro started, “I need to explain this more. Think about it, Gaara; what happens when the two of you are together?”
Gaara didn’t answer, but then he didn’t have to.
“Exactly. Besides, girls have an easier time talking to girls. Leave it to Temari; she’s in love, too. The two of them will have plenty to talk about.” Giving another grin, Kankuro finished. “See ya later, little brother.”
With that, Kankuro left, and Gaara was once more alone with his thoughts. Which, surprisingly, weren’t stressing him out anymore. Which meant it’d been a good idea to talk, and likely a better idea to have Temari talk to Suzaki. Who knows, maybe by this time tomorrow, they wouldn’t have such stress between them.
Still, he imagined the sexual tension wouldn’t go away for a long time. Although logically, the longer that lasted -- considering they were physical at this point -- the better it would feel in bed. Or so he guessed; he’d never felt such tension before. He wondered if Suzaki was the only woman on the planet capable of causing such feelings, or if he was really in love with her, and that’s why it felt so strong.
Either way, his mind was settled a bit, making it easier to concentrate. He sifted through the papers on his desk again, this time pointedly paying attention to what they said. B-class mission, C-class mission, E-class mission. . . He assigned teams to each one, sent for them, gave details and so on as he usually did.
Interestingly enough, the only question that returned to his mind every so often concerning Suzaki was her jutsu. Being able to main it rain like that -- if that jutsu could be used at no harm to her, then they could avoid any severe problems of the village. As long as she was willing and not already on a mission, of course.
He could just imagine the multitude of problems Sunagakure ran into on a regular basis. Sandstorms, drought, rockslides from the mountains around, poverty, sunstroke; all these things that could be fixed before they began. And it all revolved around water. Rain would prevent drought, reduce sandstorms, create clouds to block the heat, increase crops, and definitely make Sunagakure easier to reach, not to mention more pleasing to the eye. Suzaki had, essentially, a life-giving jutsu.
And she’d kept it all to herself for who-knows-how-long. Even if she didn’t tell her teammates or sensei, she could have at least told the Kazekage, given the weight of good that could come from it. He could only come up with two reasons why she mentioned it to no one: the first, she didn’t realize the full scope of things that could come from rain, though he doubted that; she’d been born in Sunagakure, like everyone else. The second, more probable reason is that she only recently made it or perfected it.
It wasn’t unknown of for teams to train away from one another, and only reveal their newest abilities once they found it worthy of use. So, perhaps she’d been trying for a long time, and only yesterday did she attempt to put it to use.
This only made Suzaki more worthy of the attention he’d been giving her. What an odd thing it was, to find a water-user in a desert, he mused. Not to mention a real beauty, shapely though just seventeen, strong and skilled and. . .damn sexy.
He shook his head, dispelling the thoughts. The last thing he needed after the steam this morning was another hard-on. And at work, where he was visited by plenty of people, strangers and villagers alike, every day. No, he didn’t need that, for sure. He almost laughed at himself, thinking how easily swayed he was whenever it came to Suzaki.
Which is odd in itself, he supposed. Though he’d admired her beauty for a long while, they’d only recently gotten passionate. How strange to be affected so quickly and so drastically. Until recently, he’d only wondered what it would feel like to lay with her; now, it was detailed visions, influencing each of his senses. She was definitely a perfect kind of woman to have fantasies about, too.
If he thought about it for long enough, like now, his mind gave him the same answer as to which of her aspects he found most appealing. It was always her eyes, neither yellow nor brown, but that red-orange swirl. He swore those eyes had a light of their own, wondered if maybe they glowed when everything else was dark. She was a contrast to every other woman he knew, in more ways than he thought could be.
She was almost monochromatic, her eyes almost matching the color of her lips, her hair a few shades lighter but still have a light orange sheen to it. Skin light but still tanned, like everyone else except those who avoided sunlight. All reds and oranges, she was practically made of sunlight, if he thought about it like that. That alone was a conflict against herself, for someone who looks born of sun to have an affinity towards water.
And now he felt like a poet. Maybe, he considered, if he said something like that to her, with more flare, she wouldn’t skitter away. . . Then again, what the hell was he thinking? Love ballads were far off, compared to his usual demeanor. He’d much rather comment on how her lips tasted than start singing or something weird like that. Deciding that there was no way he’d be that -- that --
There wasn’t even a word for “that.” He was getting sentimental or something, he supposed. It was time he ignored those thoughts and concentrated, instead, on actually getting work done. He’d wasted enough of the day focused on Suzaki.
It was silly to fight it, another lesson he doubted he’d ever learn. No matter how hard he tried, eventually his thoughts wandered back to her. Luckily, he rather enjoyed thinking of her. As time kept flitting by, half passing by as he worked, the other half spent daydreaming, he started to smile.
