Neji stretched out across his bed. If it weren't for the restraining ankle chain and the unusual wrist bands he wouldn't even know he was a captive. The bed was plush, the food was outstanding, the servants were kind (though not helpful) and his room faced out over a peaceful looking lake. The bars on the window were the only indication that this was more of a prison than a posh hotel.
Over the past week Neji had tried to piece together what had happened to him and the others. His mind was a complete blank. One minue he had been walking in the woods, a strange fog had rolled in, and then the next thing he knew he was tucked in to this bed. He had tried pounding on the walls, pounding on the window, pounding on the floor, but he had no luck in getting a reaction from his captor. For now he would just have to sit tight. He hoped Naruto and Sasuke had faired as well as he had.
The servant had just come to remove his lunch, so he was surprised when the door opened for a second time in just a few minutes.
"Get up, you're coming with me."
Neji stared. Though it had been years since he last saw him, he recognized Itachi instantly. For a fleeting moment he thought about fighting but realized his energy would be better spent at a different time. Itachi took out a long key and unlatched Neji's shackle from the wall. Awkwardly he followed Itachi down the hall, tripping over the chain with practically every step. They walked down a long hallway and at the end Itachi stopped.
"Clean him up."
With that he opened up the door and shoved Neji inside. Itachi crossed the darkened room, hooked him to the wall and left without another word. Neji wasn't sure who he was supposed to clean up but in the dark light of the room he saw a huddled mass on the bed. He walked over to the curtains and pulled them open so the afternoon sunshine could fill the room. He wasn't too surprised when the light revealed it was Sasuke in the bed.
"You look like shit." Neji had meant to say something a bit more reassuring, but the truth was the truth.
"I feel like shit. Why are you here?"
"Your guess is as good as mine. Your brother came to get me, told me to clean you up, and then left. Are you ok?"
"I'm fine."
Neji looked at Sasuke. He looked anything but fine. His face was puffy and he was lying at a strange angle. It took him a minute to realize it, but when he finally noticed Sasuke was tied to the bed he moved quickly to free his friend. He didn't have to ask what had happened. The bottle of lubricant near the pillow told the entire story.
"Have you seen Naruto?" he asked, breaking the silence.
"No." Sasuke's words hung in the air and Neji could tell there was more. Sasuke did not continue however and so the boys sat quietly for a few minutes before Neji moved closer to his dark haired companion. He placed a hand gently on his shoulder.
"It's not your fault." He didn't know why he said it, but it sounded right.
Sasuke didn't say a word, and instead closed his eyes.
Neji was at a loss.

Naruto eyed Sasuke's sisterly suspiciously as he walked. He had been surprised when she had heard the Ramen comment. Itachi had told him that Mina needed to be touching someone to hear their thoughts. Apparently he was wrong. Naruto decided to test if she was listening or not.
'You're ugly!' 'You're fat!' 'I'd liked to see you without your clothes on!' None of these things were true, but from his limited experience with women, they were bound to bring out a reaction. Mina just kept walking though. Either she was great at pretending she wasn't listening or she had been telling the truth. Naruto decided she had no reason to lie. Pleased that he had a little more freedom for thought he let his brain wander... not to far though... he kept his secret locked away just in case.
'I like what she said about the snake in the box. I need to remember that to use some time. I'll probably change it from snake to fox though. That would probably make the point a little easier to understand. If you put a fox in a box, the box is not a fox. It's just a box with a fox in it. Maybe he would leave it as a snake. I wonder why she took up for me. She's different than I expected. Itachi had said she was dangerous and she definately makes me feel uneasy. What was with that "Only if you open it up." comment. Was she planning on cutting him open? She doesn't seem like a killer. She is a little strange. I'm going to have to try to stay awake all night.'
Naruto snapped back to reality when Mina turned suddenly and spoke.
"I'm at a loss. Why would you put your faith in Itachi when he's the one sending you out here with me? He sent you here for me to torment you. To do what he's asked me, it could take considerable torture, and apparently knowing this, you still accepted thought blocking training from him. Why on Earth would you want to protect him? I'm... astonished. If he has some secret weakness you should betray him. I might even help you." Mina was trembling.
Naruto didn't know what to say. He was just as confused as she was. Why was he trusting Itachi? She made a good point. He didn't really know if he could trust her either though. She was obviously very sharp. This could easily be a trick. She glared at him with an all too familiar look of frustration. Helplessly he looked at the ground.
She turned back around and continued walking. In about ten minutes they arrived at a frightening looking cottage in the middle of a clearing. The house looked very old and all the angles were wrong. It was like the entire house had been lifted up, twisted, and then set back down a little off of its foundation. Mina walked to the front door, muttered something under her breath and the door magically opened. She walked inside and motioned for Naruto to enter. For the umpteenth time that day he was surprised at what he saw. It was small but very homey.
The whole place was divided into just two rooms. The larger room was a mix between a bedroom, a living room and a kitchen, and the smaller room housed a toilet and a shower. All the furniture was mismatched, but the colors coordinated enough to look fashionable and the bed in the corner was covered in an intricate quilt. The kitchen took up all of the back wall and the shelves looked fully stocked. A vase of wildflowers had been placed on the mantle above the fire place.
"I guess they knew I was coming."
Naruto started to question her about to whome she was referring but his attention was drawn away by a faded picture of a massive moth that took up one full wall. It was beautiful but spooky at the same time.
"Do you like it?" Mina asked softly when she noticed what Naruto was staring at.
"It's... different. Mesmorizing."
"I have one just like it on the bottom of my foot. It's my curse... my seal..."
Naruto blinked as what she said sank in. He'd heard several times now that she had something inside of her. He hadn't really bothered to guess what it was.
"She was a witch, powerful and evil. She was as old as time." Mina's eyes were turning an odd shade of violet as she spoke. "She knew she was dying when she found me in the forest. She pricked her finger and my heel, mixed our blood, and now forever we are one." She touched the moth on the wall gently and then shook her head as if coming out of a dream.
"Sorry about that. Sometimes she speaks through me and it get's a little overdramatic. It doesn't happen often."
Naruto looked at Mina in a whole new light. She was like him. She had said that thing about the snake in the box because she understood. Even with the somber mood in the cottage he felt like dancing. He knew his situation was dire but deep in his heart he felt an instant connection with Mina. It sparked new hope.
"You're smiling." she observed outloud.
"I just..." Naruto didn't know what to say. He was at a loss.

Itachi walked in to the front room of the castle. Several men were gathered there and although someone was telling a rousing story about a chesty woman the rambunctious crowd went silent when they noticed he had entered.
"I'll be leaving for a few days. No one is to touch either of the boys I'm holding captive. Let the whole house know to do so is to die."
The men nodded in acknowledgement and Itachi stalked out of the room. He was leaving. He wasn't sure where he was going, but the plan was to get as far away from his relatives as was possible. He had never been so out of control. This wasn't like him. He didn't like it. He had been so angry at Sasuke that he had let himself slip. Then, when Sasuke had been lying there looking so helpless he had reached out to him. He felt himself getting nauseous just thinking about it. What the fuck was going on? Itachi shook his head as he looked back toward the castle. He was at a loss. This whole thing was a mess.

laila-chan- I know Itachi's character is a little out of sorts. Blame it on the Alternate Universe... or me if you like! Thanks for reading!
Everyone else- Don't forget to help me out and leave a comment about pairing ideas. I just can't decide. I'm ready to flip flop the whole story because I can't seem to get this on this on the right track. I wanna write some happy love scenes, damn it!
