*~*~*~*
Smiling sadly as he walked out of the Nin office, Naruto sighed and folded up the paperwork that he had gotten stamped and sealed. “Thank you, Iruka-san, for doing this,” he said, looking up at the Umino.
“Of course, Naruto-kun,” Iruka said, smoothing a hand through blond hair. “Are you sure that you need to do this?” he asked.
“If I don’t, my father will try force me to stay and that will kill me. Either on the field of battle, fighting for a village that hasn’t been home for a very long time, or a slow slide into depression,” Naruto said, shifting on his feet. “Even Kakashi-san has said that I’m not happy here. Haven’t been for a very long time.”
Iruka sighed before nodding. “Very well. All of the paperwork will be processed overnight and on your father’s desk by tomorrow morning. I suggest that you go home and finish getting ready to leave. I understand that Orochimaru has gotten permission to leave the village with Anko-san and Kabuto-kun.”
“He has,” Naruto said, looking at the horizon, seeing how far the sun had set already. “I have nearly an hour before they leave. Orochimaru-san has already told me that if I do go through with this, and meet them on time, he’d take me with,” he admitted.
“Good. Someone is going to have to keep training you, and who better than the one who has watched you grow and knew your mother closely,” Iruka said, smiling again. He looked around. “I hope that you will keep in contact with me.”
“I will try,” Naruto said, hugging Iruka around the waist before pulling away with a smile. He nodded and disappeared in a swirl of leaves, leaving the teacher to sigh and head to his own home. He would probably be dragged out of bed when they learned that Naruto had quit the shinobi forces just a day after receiving his headband and before his team met for the first time officially.
Naruto dropped onto the porch of his family home, staring at the front door. He had learned from Kakashi that the house had been painted and decorated by his mother. Kushina Namikaze-Uzumaki: the second holder of the Kyuubi and the woman who had died to seal the fox away into Naruto once more.
And the woman that Minato Namikaze had fallen so far into depression that once his son was old enough to attend the academy he had taken to spending most nights out of the house then in. It had hurt at first, but now, at age thirteen, Naruto was used to it and willing to forge his own path.
Taking a deep breath, Naruto slid his fingers over the hidden seals, feeding them some chakra and stepping into the house, closing the door behind him. He pulled off his shoes, walked through the hall and up the stairs towards his bedroom, closing the blue door to his bedroom. His eyes swept over the room, sighing softly.
It didn’t even look like he lived in it. There were clothes in the drawers of his dresser and a few things hanging in the small closet. The top of his dresser was covered in specialized cloth that he could lay out his bigger weaponry on, a long table sitting along another wall set up for the rest of his other weaponry. His desk was clear of most of his own work, organized to the point where people would think he had OCD.
But his other rooms, rooms as Kakashi’s apartment and the one that he sometimes stayed at in Orochimaru’s family home was messy. Lived in. It showed any that looked closely that he didn’t consider the house of his parents as his own. And hadn’t for a long time.
Sighing, Naruto ran a hand through loose hair and moved to start packing up the last of his items. He had three scrolls already filled with his weapons, the Uzumaki scrolls that his father couldn’t open. No one outside of himself could claim them seeing as Mito, Kushina, and himself held dual citizenship and could remove anything Uzumaki from the village as they pleased. He had already sealed the masks from the Uzumaki shrine to set up a new shrine where ever he came to rest.
Everything else that was important in his room had also been sealed up and put into a travel bag with the other scrolls. The only items left in his room was the scrolls that held his personal research into the Uzumaki scrolls, books and pictures that he couldn’t remove until he was ready to leave, and a few art supplies. It took him ten minutes with the help of a shadow clone to get everything packed up.
With everything in his bag, Naruto sat at his desk, picked up a pen and pulled out some of the stationary that his father had given him for his last birthday. Rubbing fingers over the delicate swirls that sat under his name and rank, he sighed, feeling the distance between himself and his father. Minato was a good man but in Naruto’s eyes, he had to move past the loss of his wife.
It never did well to dwell on the past so much that the present suffered.
Shaking his head, Naruto started to pen the letter that he had been planning for close to six months. From the day to the thought of leaving the village up until the moment he was working on the letter, he had figured out just what he wanted to say. And how to say it.
It took him another twenty minutes to fill the paper with his neat kanji before folding it up carefully and placing the pages into the porcelain toad container that had come from Jiraiya when he had been nine. It was one of two pieces that he was going to leave behind, the other being a painting of his mother. He had copies of every picture in the house, but the painting…
He looked up at it and smiled at the smiling woman. “The painting will have to stay. No reason why it should come with me when I can paint others of you, mother,” he said to himself. Scooping up his packed bag, changed into simple nin traveling clothes, a bandana over his bright yellow hair, Naruto laid the copies of the paperwork that stated that as a citizen of two villages, he was leaving for an extended time on the desk and left the house.
He locked up after grabbing the scrolls that he had packed with easy travel food and water, and dodged his way through the village, skirting around the ANBU patrol as the night got darker and cooler. Slipping past one of the smaller, hidden gates in the village wall, using his rights as Uzumaki to leave without needing to speak with the keepers, he found the meadow that Orochimaru had told him he would be in.
“I take it that you’re coming with,” Orochimaru stated, eyeing the young male. With his hair hidden, Naruto looked quite a bit like his mother with wide eyes that shown with knowledge beyond his years.
“Yep.”
Orochimaru breathed out as Kabuto shifted next to him, the young teen looking between the two with curious dark gray eyes, Anko rolling her own eyes. “And you won’t be dissuaded.”
“Orochimaru-san, quite frankly...no. This place hasn’t been home in a long time. I know I’m not ready to be alone so I figured, if anything, as long as you’re willing to train me, I will call wherever you settle home,” Naruto said.
Orochimaru sighed, stared at the young male, cursed Namikaze, Jiraiya and Tsunade for all abandoning the young man in some way before nodding. “Have you said your goodbyes?” he asked.
“Iruka-sensei knows. Kakashi-kun probably suspects. He’ll find the letter to him tomorrow when I don’t arrive for team meet and greet. And...father won’t care. Not...not the way I wanted when I was still here,” Naruto said. Orochimaru stared at him again before nodding sharply.
“Very well then. We are heading to Rice Country. The Dynamo have approved us setting up a nin village, allowing him to start moving jobs to us instead of outsourcing,” Orochimaru stated. Naruto smiled and followed the three, Kabuto running alongside him and sending him an understanding look.
Naruto felt as if life was going to take an interesting turn for the best.
