Chapter 51
"Say, can I ask you something?" Kei asked, lounging on the bed.
Saving his assignment first, Akihito turned around then and looked at his cousin. "Sure, what's up?"
If he concentrated he could hear his other cousins playing football with his brother outside. It had been a pleasant surprise to come home from university to find Naruto and his cousins visiting them. Akihito had had the option to live in a dorm, but he hadn't seen the need for that. He could easily travel back and forth using the train and why waste money on a dorm and possibly end with an annoying roommate when he could study in peace at home? There was also the fact that he could still enjoy his dad's cooking like this, he wasn't going to lie. Nothing beat dad's cooking – well, except maybe his godfather's, but he knew better than to say that aloud.
Kei frowned, tugging at one of the strings of his hoodie. "You ever had – I know this is going to sound weird or stupid or so, but you ever had the feeling that you were being followed?"
Instantly the Alpha was on high alert. "What do you mean? You think you're being followed?"
"Not all the time!" Kei hastily said, but gnawed down on his lip before he continued, "Just … Lately, sometimes when dad is dropping us off at our schools, I get this weird feeling that someone is following us." He shook his head, frowning harder. "It's just a feeling, because I can never see anybody, so maybe I'm just being stupid, but - "
"You're not stupid, Kei," Akihito instantly refuted. "Have you told your parents about this?"
Kei pulled his feet onto the bed, wrapping his arms around his raised legs. "No, because I don't have any sort of proof and I don't want to worry them. You know how papa gets if he thinks something is wrong."
Yeah, Akihito knew, because it was exactly how father was if something could be wrong with dad or with them. And usually that was with good reason.
He leant forwards, clasping his hands together between his legs. "Do you feel like you're being followed every day?"
"Not every day." Kei shook his head. "I think, maybe twice or three times a week? Not the entire way to school, though. Once we're close to school, I stop feeling like we're being followed."
"Are your brother and sisters feeling the same thing?"
"No, I don't think so. I don't want to ask them either, because I don't want them to start panicking."
"Hm." Akihito leant back in his chair and crossed his arms, contemplating what he'd just been told. While Kei was known to pull the occasional prank, he looked far too serious for this to be something silly. There was no way he was this good of an actor, especially not around family.
If Kei felt like someone was following them – that might very well be the truth. Given who their family was and the significance their name held, this couldn't be anything but bad news.
His mind made up, he smiled at Kei, who in spite of his obvious worry still perked up slightly. "Don't worry, I'll take care of it."
"I don't want to keep you away from your work, though," Kei said concerned and rubbed his cheeks harshly. "I know I should just tell dad about this, but he's been so stressed out with his classes lately that I don't want to freak him out even more, because hell, I might just be imagining it."
That didn't seem likely. "Don't worry about it," Akihito repeated. "I don't have that many classes this semester, so I won't fall behind. We'll figure out what's going on, I promise."
"Okay," Kei sighed softly. "Thanks for helping me."
"No problem." Akihito smiled. "That's what family is for, remember?"
Akihito had always been a curious child. Father would often sigh exasperatedly and say that he'd inherited his nosiness from dad. Dad in return would protest, saying it wasn't nosiness but simply healthy curiosity. Whichever it might be, Akihito liked knowing things; especially if it were the sort of thing that people would rather keep hidden.
That was how, four years ago, he had discovered what kind of dual life his family was actually living. For several years he had suspected that something was off about his family. The way father would sometimes return home with such a blank look on his face, it creeped out Akihito every time he saw it. Because father never looked just neutral then; no, he looked like he was experiencing such heavy emotions that the only way to deal with them was to ruthlessly push them down and present nothing but a blank mask. Akihito hated those days the most.
Or the way Akihito had found dad trembling slightly for days on end some years ago, flinching at every hard noise. Dad had laughed it off as having had a really awful nightmare back then, but Akihito had always had trouble fully believing that.
He'd been seventeen when he figured out that his family were yakuza, plainly put. He hadn't been meant to find out about it like that; perhaps father would have never come clean about that side of the family if Akihito hadn't forced his hand. But Akihito had always been curious and being left alone with a safe he had never been allowed to look in when it was open while father and dad were discussing something with father's colleagues in another office? Yeah, that was like putting the cat with the milk and not expecting the cat to drink from it.
He wasn't that often in father's office, but he knew that father changed the code of the safe regularly. Ever since he'd laid eyes on the safe for the first time when he'd been a kid, he'd been curious about the content. Mainly because it was the one place father wouldn't allow him to peek at when it was open. Literally every drawer and cabinet in this office was fair game to Akihito bar this one safe.
It probably contained just more boring business stuff, the Alpha boy reasoned as he tiptoed to the safe, looking over his shoulder. The door was still closed; his parents still in an office further down the hallway, discussing something with Kisame-ji-san and Nagato. But he just couldn't contain his curiosity; it was practically itching by now, urging him to open the safe and finally discover what it was that father kept stored there.
Father had had the safe open when Akihito and dad had entered his office and almost habitually Akihito had studied the combination, so he quickly entered it on the pad; anticipation filling him when the quiet click sound announced that he could pull open the door of it. A stack of files greeted him when he looked inside and he pursed his lips, a bit disappointed. Just business stuff after all, huh? He grabbed the first file, figuring he might as well take a quick look now that he had the chance.
It wasn't business stuff. Well, perhaps it could be classified as business, but of a whole other sort than what father conducted during the day. The files contained information about several people; some Akihito didn't recognise at all, but others had appeared in the news before, always related to gang activities. Other files talked about possible alliances, places where certain yakuza gangs were holed up …
Father was definitely not a detective, so why …
"I keep telling you that your nosiness is going to get you in trouble one day, Akihito." Father's presence had Akihito literally jumping in the air of fright, whirling around with one of the files still clutched in his hand.
Instantly guilt sank like a heavy stone in his stomach. "I'm sorry, father; I was just … curious," was the only lame thing he could think of to say. He was so busted and he was afraid to find out just how pissed off father would get. Not to mention dad. God, he was screwed, wasn't he?
"There's being curious and there's sniffing in private documents," Father said dryly and closed the door before walking over to him. "Your dad is about to finish his conversation with Kisame soon, so I figured I would come get you."
Well, shit. He really should have been paying better attention to his surroundings, damn it!
"That's mine, thank you." Father held out his hand, one eyebrow raised.
Akihito handed the file over immediately, because there was no sense in pushing himself even deeper in trouble than he already was. "I shouldn't have done this, father. I'm really sorry."
"You shouldn't have, no. How much did you read?"
Akihito hesitated but father merely raised both eyebrows. "Nearly everything," he admitted begrudgingly, watching the older Alpha put the file back before closing the safe. He would change the code again today, Akihito just knew it.
Father sighed softly. "This wasn't exactly how I wanted you to find out about this," he murmured, stunning Akihito.
"You're not going to deny it?"
"Deny what?" Father asked calmly.
"That you're – that our family is … some kind of yakuza," Akihito said haltingly, the words so foreign in his mouth. Strange to utter them even as he was starting to wrap his head around everything he'd just read.
"Denying it when you've read everything would be an insult to the both of us," Father stated. "I do wish you hadn't gone snooping around, Akihito. You have a lot of leeway in this office, you should have respected this one place that you weren't allowed to see yet."
"I know." Akihito hung his head; shame burning ugly inside of him. He knew he and his brother got away with a lot of crap even at father's office, purely because of who they were. He wished he could go back in time and stop himself from looking into the safe. Worse than father being furious was him being disappointed and Akihito hated disappointed his parents.
He flinched when Father grasped his shoulder and squeezed it gently. "We'll talk about this tonight at home, okay?"
Akihito swallowed and nodded. "Yeah, all right."
Shockingly father hadn't been furious at all when he'd come home that evening. He had answered all of Akihito's questions as honest as he could have been, explaining that their family had been in this 'type of business' for decades already, having secured themselves a top spot in the underworld. Not everyone of the family was part of it, however. Sasuke-ji-san, for example, had resolutely decided against joining that particular side and was keeping Naruto and his children firmly out of it.
Father had explained that it was entirely up to Akihito whether he would want to join them, but dad had been clear about the fact that while he wouldn't stop Akihito, he also wasn't going to encourage him either. Akihito could understand that. As honest as father had been during that time – and still was if Akihito came to him with questions – there were still subjects he was unwilling to discuss bar giving the minimum of details. Akihito knew that his family did punish people going against them, but the degree of the punishment he was unaware about, because father hadn't wanted to discuss that yet.
The young Alpha wasn't stupid, though. You didn't rise to the top of the underworld by being 'soft'. That wasn't how it worked.
While father wasn't particularly encouraging him to follow in his footsteps, he did teach Akihito which people to avoid if he ever encountered them on the streets and gave him pointers how to recognise if someone belonged to a yakuza family. Kisame-ji-san and Nagato had even been brought in to teach Akihito how to recognise if someone was following him and in that case, what he should do (which was stay in a public space and immediately contact father or Kisame-ji-san. If neither were answering immediately – a rare case that would be – he would have to contact Sasuke-ji-san or grandfather even).
While not officially part of the business, Akihito knew a fair bit about it already and he'd especially been diligent about the training he'd received from Kisame-ji-san and Nagato, because he needed to know what to do in case someone ever threatened his family. Again father had been unwilling to talk about it, but it was more than clear that this side of the business had landed at least dad in some serious trouble before. Dad could take care of himself fairly well, but Akihito never wanted to see dad or his little brother be put in a position where they could get hurt again. So he memorised all the names and faces of people that could pose a danger and learnt how to spot when someone was following him or what to do if he ever needed to follow someone.
At the time he had thought it weird that he would have to learn how to basically stalk someone, but Nagato had been staunch about it, explaining that one always had to know both sides to keep everything in balance. Akihito wasn't really sure whether he understood that answer but if Nagato – and by extension father – thought it necessary that he knew how to shadow someone, then so be it. He wasn't going to take any chances when it concerned his family's safety.
As it turned out, he was going to make good use of his shadowing training. When Monday arrived, he left home earlier than usual, telling dad that he had a project to prepare with some other students. Not entirely a lie as he did have a project; everything had already been arranged for that, however, but the excuse left him free to follow Naruto as he dropped off Akihito's cousins as their respective schools. He had his hood pulled over his head to hide his face somewhat and wore sunglasses as if he had a hungover and was dealing with the resulting headache. He kept a sharp eye on the street, but didn't see anyone behaving in a suspicious manner.
No surprise there as Kei had said that the mysterious person didn't follow them every day.
On Tuesday Akihito noticed a young man with a buzzcut trailing behind Naruto and the children, keeping the same fixed distance between them until Naruto had dropped off everyone and made his way back to his car. The guy waited until Naruto had got into his car and had driven off before he slunk away to the nearest bus stop. Rather suspicious behaviour, but one time didn't make a pattern yet.
The following day, Buzzcut Guy was there once more, still at a distance following Akihito's family. This was becoming too much of a coincidence but Akihito waited until the evening to receive Kei's text to decide whether his suspicion was correct. It turned to out to be correct when Kei admitted that he had once again felt like they were being followed.
Buzzcut Guy was definitely the one shadowing them, but for what? His face – rather unremarkable save for his rather pointy nose – didn't immediately ring any bells and Akihito had memorised all the faces of potentially enemies very well when father had shown him the pictures.
On Thursday Buzzcut Guy wasn't there and Kei confirmed that same evening that he hadn't felt like they were being followed. Akihito had no clue what the guy wanted from his family, but it couldn't be anything good. If he had an innocent reason to follow them, wouldn't he have approached Naruto by now? Instead he followed the family at a distance and then stalked Naruto all the way to his car before he would finally give up and leave.
Considering Kei had felt like they were being followed for a while now, Akihito was loathe to wait any longer to find out what the guy wanted. He had to do something soon before Buzzcut Guy would go through with whatever he was planning.
On Friday Akihito sat down on one of the benches close to Keiko's school before the family would show up, hoping he could get a better look at Buzzcut Guy if he was indeed going to stalk Naruto today. He was, confirming the pattern that Kei had mentioned, and Akihito pretended to scroll on his phone, keeping his hood pulled down far over his face. He was lucky that it was drizzling somewhat, making his hoodie not that out of place.
First Naruto walked past him, oblivious that his nephew was not even three feet away from him, laughing at something Kiseki was explaining in quite a dramatic way, including hand gestures. Kenta as usual was following quietly, but smiling at his twin's antics, and Kei was holding on to Keiko's hand, letting her skip next to him. She was wearing a bright orange jacket today and Akihito managed to hide his snort just in time, wondering just how many arguments that particular jacket had caused between Naruto and Sasuke-ji-san.
He sobered up when Buzzcut Guy approached and as the man walked past him – meandering almost, his thumbs hooked around the loops in his jeans – Akihito took him in as quickly as he could, trying to discern anything that might give him a clue as to what the guy wanted with his family.
The clue was on his left wrist: a tattoo of three tomoe shaped in an S form. Small, black ink, almost unobtrusive – but undeniably a mark of the Sound clan.
The Sound Clan was an upcoming yakuza clan, still trying to find their footing amongst the other clans. Father had mentioned that bar some scuffles the Sound Clan mostly respected the Uchiha territory and stayed away from their family. Whether that was out of respect or simply because they were smart enough to realise that they wouldn't be able to take on the Uchiha family, nobody could say, but on a scale of least threatening to most, they hovered somewhere around a three or a four.
Akihito supposed it was time to give them a higher rating, considering one of them was apparently stalking Naruto and his family – and the young Alpha doubted it was merely to chat with Naruto. No, the guy was obviously planning something, probably memorising Naruto's schedule in order to find the right moment to do whatever he planned on doing.
Akihito wasn't going to give him a chance to implement his plan. He didn't care what the guy's reason was; nobody stalked his family and got away with it.
The next Monday Akihito rose up early, checked whether his phone had a full battery and once more started following the same route Naruto and the kids took. This time Buzzcut Guy had decided that he should switch up his routine and stalk them today instead of tomorrow, which suited Akihito just fine. The sooner he resolved this, the better.
Instead of following the group all the way to Kei's school, he turned left, making his way to the alley close to the bus stop the guy always waited at. The next part was going to be risky with the street getting busier with each minute that passed, but he didn't want to wait any longer either.
As he waited, hidden in the alley, his phone seemed to burn in his pocket, and he considered calling father before the guy would show up, but that wouldn't do much. The guy would already be gone by the time father would show up and following him all the way to wherever he holed up after stalking Naruto didn't seem like such a good idea. Akihito was in no way equipped to handle an entire gang, but one guy? He thought he would be able to handle him if he had the element of surprise on his side.
Which he had. The second Buzzcut Guy walked into view, Akihito said conversationally, "Hey, did you know it's against the law to stalk someone?" and grabbed the guy by his arm before he could run away.
"What the fuck do you think you're - "
Swiftly Akihito kicked his legs from underneath him and slammed his head against the dumpster, knocking him out before he could finish speaking. Buzzcut Guy crumpled to the ground, out cold for now.
Breathing a bit hard, adrenaline rushing through him, Akihito grabbed his phone, glaring at his trembling finger as he scrolled through his contacts.
"Well, hello there, squirt," Kisame-ji-san greeted him jovially. "You're calling early, what's up?"
"I need your help."
Akihito shot up when the door to father's office opened, revealing the older Alpha with his lips pursed.
"Did he wake up yet? Did you get him to talk?" Akihito asked anxiously.
After calling Kisame, the older man had shown up, perplexed of course, because it wasn't in Akihito's nature to call him so early for any sort of help. His bemusement had only grown even further when he'd spotted the unconscious guy lying next to the dumpster, until Akihito had explained what was going on.
Kisame had thrown the guy in the back of the car after tying his hands together and had ordered Akihito to call father and tell him everything while they made their way to father's company. To say that father hadn't been particularly happy was an understatement and the young man still hadn't quite figured out whether father was pissed off that someone had been stalking Naruto or that Akihito hadn't called in help sooner.
It could be both, to be honest.
"He woke up and immediately wished he hadn't," Father said dryly and walked to his desk, sitting down. "And yes, we did get him to talk. As it turns out, he's new to the Sound Clan and as a final initiation test he had to prove himself."
While he gave no further information, disgust and fury was barely restrained in his voice and his eyes were burning, making Akihito swallow; his stomach performing a couple of funny twists. He didn't need any more details to know that the initiation test hadn't just been 'stalk someone'.
"What's going to happen to him?"
Father clasped his hands together and rested his chin on them. "We're going to take care of him and let the Sound Clan know that we don't appreciate them encroaching on our space," he murmured; his gaze turning distant for just a short moment before it sharpened again and landed on Akihito. "You took a big risk, following him for so long. You should have come to me when Kei-kun informed you of his suspicions."
"I should have," Akihito admitted and sank down in the chair again, staring at his hands. "But I guess I just … wanted to know whether I could do this."
Whether he could one day join his father's other business. It was something he'd been wondering about ever since he knew the full truth about their family. Could he one day fully follow father in his footsteps and take over the more shady side of their family? Would he be able to do whatever it took to keep their family safe?
He remembered Kei's worried face, his jitteriness as he talked about feeling like they were being followed. He thought about following the Sound member, watching how he stalked the man Akihito considered his older brother, knowing that Naruto was completely unaware of the danger following so closely behind.
He thought about what could have happened to Naruto, what might have occurred if he hadn't stepped in to put a stop to it.
He recalled that brief moment of absolute satisfaction as he slammed the guy's head into the dumpster, knowing he had him, knowing that now Naruto wouldn't have to worry about being stalked anymore.
He thought about all that and decided that, yeah, he would do everything it took to keep their family safe.
When he looked up, he couldn't help but flush a bit at the barely restrained warmth in father's eyes. "I'm not going to encourage you to follow my footsteps," he said, a line that was becoming quite familiar by now, and stood up, rounding the desk to place his hand around the back of Akihito's neck, squeezing him softly there. "But you can be proud of yourself, Akihito. Because you kept them safe."
Akihito might be twenty-one by now, but he still stood up and hugged father firmly; his praise settling warmly inside of him.
There were no more doubts in his mind.
Kei 05.36 p.m.
Don't know what you did, but I haven't felt like we're being followed in more than a week now. Thanks!
Akihito smiled, listening to Shion and his friend laugh together in the room next to him.
Me 05.37 p.m.
Told you I'd take care of it. That's what family's for, remember?
