Author's note: And I'm back! With chapter 50, holy shit! I think this is the first story of mine that reaches the fifty chapter mark! Again my apologies for taking so long *winces* I had trouble deciding which prompt to choose. If I still have readers left for this, I'll be frankly amazed.
Warnings: Itachi's pov; the main part takes place around a year after the court trial; the flashback takes place a couple of weeks after Sasuke and Sakura broke up; some drama; Itachi being the protective older brother
Dedicated to: RedCeleste, because I'm pretty sure you were the one requesting a plot like this. If not, correct me!
I hope you'll like it!
Chapter 50
"So it's fine if I make a reservation for this Friday? Your parents said they can watch Akihito and Shion then, un," Deidara said.
Itachi pulled up his calendar and clicked on Friday. "Sure, can you try to make the reservation at seven thirty? I have a call scheduled at six, but that shouldn't take too long normally," he replied.
"Sure, no problem, un," Deidara agreed. "Did you have any meetings left today? I forgot."
"No, nothing. Nagato-kun had to postpone it. Seems like Kakuzu-san discovered something, so he's busy with that now."
"Something bad? Or is just him being overtly paranoid and frugal again?"
Itachi snorted and closed his calendar. "Honestly don't know. Nagato-kun didn't sound too worried when he called me, though, so I'm going to assume it's nothing dire."
Perhaps Hidan had been messing around with the finance sheet again. That wouldn't be the first time, even though he should know better by now than to mess with that when Kakuzu was in charge of it. One would start believing that Hidan truly had a death wish.
"Well, in that case I'll see you tonight then. Love you, un!"
The Alpha smiled. "Love you too."
Right as he pulled up the file he'd been looking through before Deidara had called him, someone knocked on the door and Rin appeared with an apologetic smile.
"My apologies, but your cousin, Shisui-san is here. He wants to speak to you."
Itachi blinked bemused. Shisui wanted to speak to him? What was so urgent that it couldn't be done through the phone during the evening? The older man rarely had cause to seek out Itachi at the company, because even though Shisui was a lawyer his cases never involved the company.
"Sure, let him in," he said, closing the file for now.
Shisui was dressed in a smart marine blue suit, which meant he had come straight from his own office. He was smiling as he walked through the door, but there were subtle lines etched near the corners of his eyes, which Itachi had come to associate with his cousin either being irritated or worried.
"Hello Shisui, I didn't expect to see you here," Itachi greeted him and briefly rose up, gesturing at the seat in front of his desk. "You're here for anything in particular?"
"Hm, it's been a while," Shisui agreed and sat down. "I wish I could say I was here for pleasant business, but I'm afraid that's not really the case."
Itachi quirked an eyebrow and leant back in his chair. "How bad is it?"
The Beta cocked his head to the right and pursed his lips. "I suppose not that incredibly bad considering what you have dealt with before, but I don't feel comfortable ignoring this either."
"Okay, I bite," Itachi sighed. "What's wrong?"
To his surprise Shisui put a pile of envelopes on his desk. They had clearly been opened and were held together with a piece of string.
"When Haruno was sent to prison last year, I asked the staff there to forward me any of her mail if she tried to contact our family," Shisui started out of the blue.
"Wasn't she explicitly ordered to never contact anyone in our family again, including Naruto-kun and his children?" Itachi asked, frowning.
Aside from the sentence, that had been one of the conditions Itachi had been satisfied with, because it ensured that even after her stint in prison was over she wouldn't be able to get near his family again unless she wanted to face another sentence.
After the trail last year he honestly had ceased to think about her. She'd been dealt with accordingly and that had been that for him. There was no need to waste any more energy on someone like her.
"She was," Shisui agreed. "But considering what she has tried to do in the past, does it really surprise you that she can't even follow this condition?"
"I guess it doesn't," Itachi muttered and eyed the pile. "What's in those letters?"
"When I first received them, I honestly thought they would contain threats, seeing as she didn't look particularly happy with Sasuke-kun at the court back then," Shisui said dryly and crossed his legs. "But no, they all contain a variation of the same plea: she wants to talk to him, wants to make things up with him and asks him to come visit her."
Itachi stared at him. "Does she seriously believe my brother would ever give her the time of his day again? After all that she did to him?" he asked in disbelief.
Surely even Haruno couldn't be that dim-witted? There was no way she could actually believe that Sasuke would forgive her just like that and would want to talk to her, let alone see her? Was she that delusional?
"Apparently she truly believes that," Shisui sighed and rolled his shoulders. "That's basically all she writes about: wanting to talk to him and pleading for his forgiveness. She hopes they can put the past behind them apparently," he added with disdain.
Itachi pinched the bridge of his nose. "I thought we were finally done with her," he muttered annoyed. "And she really was intending to send those letters to Sasuke?"
"Yes, his address is on it." Shisui nodded at the pile. "She probably assumes that they wouldn't pay close attention to which letters get sent out and to whom. I thought she would eventually give up when she got no reply, but I got her latest letter today."
"She's not going to give up that easily, hm?" Itachi said annoyed.
"I'm afraid not," Shisui grimaced and ran a hand through his hair. "I normally wouldn't trouble you with this, but I didn't want to involve Sasuke-kun. He's already busy enough with the twins, he doesn't need this added onto his plate. However, I can't see her simply quitting either, so do you want me to take care of it or do you want to do it?"
"I'll take care of it," Itachi replied after contemplating it. "She knows me better than you, so I'm bound to leave more of an impression."
"Fine with me." Shisui nodded. "Like I said, normally I wouldn't have bothered you with this, but considering her history it didn't feel right to ignore this."
"No, you were right to come to me. Clearly her sentence isn't making much of an impression on her so far," Itachi murmured and narrowed his eyes.
It appeared that he would have to postpone a couple of meetings tomorrow as well.
"Good morning, Uchiha-san. I trust you're faring well," the prison warden greeted him.
He was a very imposing looking man, tall, muscled and broad shouldered and his white hair was combed back. His small moustache and goatee coupled with the prominent crease across his forehead made his look very severe. He was only known by the name A. If he had a longer name, he was unwilling to divulge that.
"I'm faring quite well, thank you. I hope it's the same for you?" Itachi inquired politely, folding his umbrella.
It had been raining quite steadily ever since he'd left the office, so he was glad for his foresight to bring an umbrella with him.
"Can't complain," A said gruffly and beckoned him to follow. "Forgive me for taking this opportunity to thank your company for its generous donations every year. It really does help our programs a lot, I'm not going to lie."
"We believe in rehabilitation whenever possible," Itachi said smoothly. Their footsteps echoed through the hallway as they walked deeper into the prison. "If we can help by donating we have no problem doing so. We're pleased that we can aid."
A side-eyed him; a hint of dark amusement in his dark eyes. "Whenever possible, you say. Can I take that to mean that for some people you do not believe that to be possible?"
Itachi offered him a bland smile. "I personally believe that some people might be beyond any professional help."
A looked straight ahead. "Unfortunately I have to agree with you on that," he grunted and rubbed his forehead, looking mildly irritated.
"I do want to thank you for accepting my visitation request on such short notice," Itachi remarked. "I really do appreciate it."
"It's fine." A waved away his gratitude. "You can only have fifteen minutes, though. I cannot give you more than that."
"Fifteen minutes is more than enough," Itachi reassured him. He might not even need more than five.
A led him straight to the visitation room where several round tables had been spread out; two chairs around each one. As A opened the door for him, Itachi watched several women file into the room, ready to meet their visitor. He only had eyes for one woman in particular, who was hurrying towards a table in the centre, wearing a hopeful look.
Haruno Sakura.
"See? This is way better than reading boring documents, isn't it, un?" Deidara teased, popping a piece of chocolate in his mouth.
The movie had just started, its intro filling the living room, but neither of them was paying attention to it. They were curled up together on the couch, Deidara sitting on his knees in front of him, switching between feeding Itachi pieces of fruit and chocolate and eating them himself. They had both taken the evening off and Deidara was wearing one of Itachi's sweaters and just his boxershorts; a mischievous glint constantly dancing in his blue eyes.
"When have I ever claimed that documents were more interesting than you?" Itachi asked amused, trailing his fingers idly across Deidara's left thigh.
"You haven't," Deidara admitted, "but you do have to admit that you can be somewhat of a workaholic, un."
"Yeah? Guess I should rectify that before the baby is born, hm?" he murmured, smiling when Deidara blushed pleased and leant forwards to catch his lips in a soft kiss.
The Alpha covered his belly with his hand, even though it was still flat and would be like that for a little while yet. He couldn't help himself, though; since Deidara had shown him the positive test a couple of weeks ago, he couldn't stop himself from touching his stomach whenever possible even though he wouldn't be able to feel anything for quite some time yet.
"If you already can't keep your hands off me now, what are you going to do when I start showing, un?" Deidara laughed and crawled into his lap.
"You say that as if I was able to keep my hands off you before you got pregnant," Itachi retorted immediately, dipping both hands underneath the sweater.
"Hah, that's true, I am rather irresistible," Deidara snickered and kissed him again. He snatched his head away with a growl when Itachi's phone started ringing loudly. "I swear to god if that is someone from your work!"
"No, this is my brother's ringtone," Itachi replied and frowned, leaning towards the table to grab the buzzing device.
All the ire left Deidara at once and he settled back on the couch, cocking his head to the left while Itachi accepted the call.
"Hey, Otouto, I didn't expect to - "
"Sorry, Itachi, but can I stay at your place for just a little bit?" Sasuke asked abruptly. He sounded both harried and severely ticked off. "I promise I won't stay the entire night."
"Sure, you know I don't mind," Itachi said and furrowed his eyebrows. "Did something hap-"
Beep, beep.
Baffled, he lowered his phone and stared at the screen, which displayed 'CALL ENDED'.
"What's up? Why did Sasuke-kun call?" Deidara asked curiously.
Itachi's relationship with his little brother could hardly be called easy at the moment, so Sasuke calling him out of the blue was definitely unexpected.
"He asked to stay here for a bit," Itachi said slowly and looked up. "He didn't want to tell me why, but he didn't sound happy at all."
Deidara's forehead creased with a frown of his own. "You think something bad happened, un?"
"I don't know. Maybe." The dark haired man shook his head. "Sorry, Deidara, but I'll have to take a rain check for tonight."
"Tch, don't apologise for that. It's your brother, for fuck's sake, of course we're going to postpone this," Deidara scolded him and rose up from the couch. "Let me get dressed into something more appropriate, un."
He paused in the middle of the doorway. "You think Sasuke-kun would want some hot chocolate? That tends to help when someone is upset," he mused aloud.
"No harm in making it, I suppose," Itachi said and shrugged. His little brother had never had a real sweet tooth, but it wasn't as if he hated chocolate either.
"Well, I'll prepare it just in case." Deidara nodded to himself and disappeared upstairs.
Pressing his lips together, Itachi stood up and collected the small plates to bring them to the kitchen. Whatever had Sasuke asking to stay at his place had to be something serious and this time Itachi wouldn't let himself be brushed off.
He could only hope it was nothing too serious after all.
Sasuke somehow managed to both look like he was wearing a thundercloud for a face while being utterly exhausted. Light bags were already forming underneath his eyes and his greeting when he entered the hallway was lacklustre at best.
"Deidara prepared some hot chocolate if you want," Itachi remarked, leaning against the doorjamb of the living room, watching Sasuke remove his coat and his shoes. Small droplets of rain glistened in his spiky hair from when he had been caught in the rain on his way here.
"That's nice of him," Sasuke muttered, which was neither a no or a yes.
Itachi led him to the living room where Deidara was putting down two mugs. The blond man smiled tentatively at Sasuke before jerking his head towards the stairs.
"Got a friend who's about to call me soon, so I'll be upstairs if you need me, un," he said, squeezing Itachi's wrist gently on his way out of the room.
"All right, have fun with the phone call," Itachi murmured, figuring it had to be Naruto.
Sasuke barely nodded before sinking down on the couch, rubbing his forehead roughly.
Cautiously Itachi sat down next to him and gazed at him. "You want to talk about it?"
The younger Alpha let out what might be considered a laugh if one was feeling very optimistic. "What, I can't visit my brother without something being wrong?" he asked sarcastically.
"We both know that doesn't tend to be the case for quite some time now," Itachi remarked quietly.
Sasuke winced faintly, hunching his shoulders.
"You know that you're always welcome here," Itachi continued and leant back against the couch. "But you sounded pretty upset on the phone. Is there anything I can help you with?"
Because they might have their differences, but they were still brothers and no matter what Itachi would always be there to help Sasuke.
Sasuke's breath escaped him in a low sort of hiss and a dark look passed across his face. He was quiet for so long that Itachi was about to give up and suggest they just watch some television instead.
Then Sasuke started talking. "Sakura, she – was waiting for me when I got home," he said stiffly. "I wasn't in the mood to deal with her bullshit, so I needed to get away and your place was the first one I thought of. Don't think she'll try to track me down here."
Itachi smiled wryly for a moment. No, he very much doubted that Haruno would follow Sasuke all the way here. He and the girl had never seen quite eye to eye with each other and she had grown into the habit of avoiding him whenever possible if she happened to accompany Sasuke on an outing to their family.
"She still bothering you, huh?" It had to be nearly five weeks now since Sasuke had broken up with her and during that time frame she had shown up several times to try to talk to Sasuke.
"Yeah, and it's pissing me off big time," Sasuke muttered, staring up at the ceiling. "She refuses to accept we're through."
"Well, there have been instances of couples getting back together," Itachi pointed out.
"There's no way in hell I will ever get back together with that bitch," Sasuke spat scornfully, glaring.
Itachi straightened up. While Sasuke certainly never had been shy to tell people what he thought about them, he tended to still remain rather respectful towards women. He definitely wasn't in the habit of going around and calling them a bitch all willy-nilly. Whatever Haruno had done … It couldn't be anything good.
"Sasuke, what happened? Why did you break up with her?" Itachi demanded. "And don't tell me it's nothing when you're calling her a bitch and she won't leave you alone."
"It's nothing," Sasuke still tried to deflect but Itachi just stared at him unimpressed.
"That's utter bullshit and you know it," Itachi said bluntly. "You've come all the way here just to avoid her, obviously something happened."
The younger man glowered and looked away, his hands balling into fists on his lap. "We got into a lot of fights near the end," he began in a low voice.
Itachi tilted his head slightly to the left, but remained silent. He had suspected they had fights, but so far Sasuke had remained completely mum about the topic of them.
"She kept insisting on taking our relationship further with giving each other the Mark and such."
The older man raised an eyebrow in scepticism. Already wanting the Mark at just twenty years old? That seemed rather hasty. A Mark was something that needed to be carefully considered, because it had such severe implications. It wasn't just something you gave because it was romantic or sweet.
"Then she was trying to needle me to get married, but we're both still studying! We're barely twenty years old, who the hell would want to get married then already?" Sasuke continued frustrated, running his hands through his hair in agitation. "I couldn't even go to my study groups without her becoming jealous about it, trying to accuse me of cheating on her."
"With your schedule as packed as it is, when would you have had time to cheat?" Itachi snorted. Not to mention that his little brother just wasn't the type to cheat; he valued honesty too much for that.
"Well, she thought I was capable of it," Sasuke smiled humourlessly. "I think I could have dealt with all that bullshit, but then I discovered that she had gone off her suppressants – without telling me. I found out just in time because she smelt differently. If I hadn't …" he trailed off with a shudder, shaking his head.
Itachi meanwhile sat there as immobile as a statue while rage started to simmer deep within him. Haruno had actually tried to trap his little brother with a baby? How screwed up was she in the head that she had thought that would have been a good idea?
"What the hell is wrong with that girl?" Itachi asked lowly, trying to suppress his fury as much as possible, but it was difficult. Knowing now how close Sasuke had come to being trapped with a baby he hadn't been ready for yet … That went beyond having no respect for Sasuke. You didn't mess with something as life altering as a baby was, especially not in a stupid attempt to rescue a doomed relationship!
Sasuke shrugged tiredly, rolling his head against the back of the couch. "I threw her out the second I realised it," he muttered. "I just couldn't trust her anymore. She knew I'm not ready yet, but tried to trick me anyway. Since then she keeps trying to talk to me."
"You want me to speak to her?" Itachi suggested, though speaking would probably be considered a euphemism for what he actually wanted to do to that selfish bitch.
"Don't bother, nii-san," Sasuke murmured. "She isn't worth your time. She'll give up eventually."
That 'eventually' turned out to be after Suigetsu had threatened her with a lawsuit.
As promised to his brother, he had never sought out Haruno before, though he had considered that idea over and over again. She didn't deserve to live a nice life after the shit she had tried to pull with his brother, but his brother's trust had always meant more to him than temporary satisfaction.
This was different however. This wasn't about what had happened in the past; this was about setting her straight for the bullshit she was trying to pull now.
This was about making sure that after today she wouldn't even dare to think about Sasuke anymore, let alone try to bother him.
Green eyes widened with shock when Itachi approached her table and she shrank slightly. Her pink hair was tied together in a loose ponytail and she appeared as if she had lost some weight since the last time he'd seen her.
"Judging from the look on your face, you weren't expecting me," Itachi smiled thinly and sat down.
The visitor list only had his last name jotted down and clearly she'd been stupid enough to hope that it would be Sasuke showing up.
"I – I don't understand," she stammered; her face sickly pale in the harsh T-light.
"That appears to have been your problem from the start," he commented critically and leant slightly forwards, lowering his voice. "But even though you might be somewhat challenged, listen to me well because I'm only going to tell you this once. You leave my brother alone. You don't write to him, you don't talk about him, you don't even get to think about him. You leave Naruto-kun alone as well. You don't try to write or speak about him or even mention him and once your stint here is over, you will move far away and you won't ever dare to approach my family again. Am I understood?"
She protested, "You don't get to tell me what - "
"I don't think you understood me well," he smiled sharply and she swallowed. "I'm not giving you a choice here, I'm telling you what will happen. Because the second I find out that you step out of line, I will find you and you won't like what I'll do then. Not even these prison walls will keep you safe from me, trust me."
He leant so closely towards her that if he had had the nose of an animal, he would have surely smelt her fear by now. "You've been given enough chances. This will be your very last warning. You try something again and you will find out why exactly nobody dares to go against the Uchiha."
He rose up and smiled coldly down at her. "Enjoy the rest of your stay here, Haruno, and pray that we will never have to meet each other again."
A looked up when he left the visitation room. "You finished your business here?"
"Yes, I did," Itachi smiled. "By any chance does Haruno have a cellmate?"
"She does," A confirmed and crossed his arms. "A woman who's been a bit too quick with her fists one time too many if I recall correctly. Why?"
"Do those two get along?"
"Hm, from what my guards tell me, Haruno-san tends to keep to herself." A narrowed his eyes slightly. "Where is this going, if I may ask?"
"Well, would you mind doing me one more favour?" Itachi inquired politely and held out an envelope. "Would you give this to her cellmate?"
"And what's in there?"
"An incentive to properly rehabilitate," Itachi chuckled.
A stared at him before heaving a huge sigh. "As long as it's nothing illegal, sure, I'll pass on the envelope."
"It's nothing illegal," Itachi assured him and handed over the envelope. "You can even take a look at the letter if you want. Like I said, just an incentive to help someone better their life."
What better way to improve your life than getting some financial aid in exchange of making sure that one particular person would cease being a nuisance? He very much doubted that Haruno would remain this stubbornly stupid after his more than clear threat, but well, certain parts of his business had taught him it was better to be safe than sorry.
Still, he was certain that after today his family would no long be bothered by the likes of Haruno.
If she did turn out to be that dumb, however … Well, he had ways of solving that kind of problem.
AN2: One does not simply mess with protective older brothers - or the Uchiha family in general, really. I hope this made up somewhat for the long wait! ^^;
Please leave your thoughts behind in a review; should you spot any mistakes, please point them out to me.
I hope to see you all back in the next chapter! Please stay safe and take care of yourselves!
