As we walk through the streets of Suna, I diligently work to keep everyone’s perception of my body exactly as it was 6 months ago. It’s extra difficult because Temari and Kankuro keep touching me now out of concern. I can maintain this without too much trouble only because my mental ability has seemed to continue to grow along with the baby. Whatever mental barriers I have in place from Orochimaru and Sasori have been deteriorating over time. Every now and then I feel a brief burn and then a release. Each time I get stronger, and the illusion becomes less difficult. I can only assume these are seals finally giving up their remaining strength.
This seems to perfectly balance out the complexity of the illusion increasing over time. My hope is that I may actually be able to keep this up, right until it’s time for the baby’s birth. I won’t risk it beyond 8 months though. Somehow between now and then I will need to find a way to convince Gaara to let me take my annual visit to Konoha alone, or perhaps with one of his siblings… For now, I should be able to maintain as long as exhaustion doesn’t get the better of me. I close my eyes briefly to drink in the vitamin D I can feel soaking into my skin beneath the hot Suna sun.
“Are you alright?” Temari asks with concern in her voice. “We can stop to rest.”
“Temari…” I threaten, “If you don’t stop mothering me like this Gaara is going to know something is up without anyone saying a word.”
“I’m sorry,” she snaps in an aggravated tone. “If you’d just told me what was wrong a while ago, we could have kept Gaara and Kankuro from getting into a snit in the first place.”
“I know,” I lie, as part of me wonders if she would keep the real secret if she were to discover it. I have questioned this a million times in the last few months. “I’m sorry, but it’s really not that big of a deal. People go through this all the time.”
She tries to think of hearing about this kind of problem before and comes up blank. She trusts me though. She purchases a big bottle of cool water and shoves it at me with a glare. I roll my eyes at her but then can’t help but giggle at her smirk.
“Hey ladies,” Kankuro strolls back up to us from his conversation with a beautiful girl across the road. He struts up between us, throwing his arms over our shoulders. “What are you two gorgeous women doing out without an escort?”
“Ha!” Temari laughs in his face. “As if any woman on Earth should accept your escort… We’re the only women safe!”
“Hey…” he complains, with a false note of self-pity. “The women of Suna happen to like my company, thank you very much.”
I am suddenly distracted from their conversation when I catch a whiff of my name echoing through someone’s mind. I am careful not to turn my body but scan for the voice more thoroughly, trying to pin the mind down.
Shit! The voice screams. The Kazekage’s wife is here… if she finds out, it could cripple the attack!...
ATTACK!?!?!? My mind begins to race with panic. What kind of attack?! I spin around fast to find the perpetrator and stare at his back as he begins to run.
“Get back here you coward!” I screech at him snatching his mind right from his body. His body hangs in mid-stride like Gaara’s had in the meadow, not even breathing. His mind begins to flail in panic. Temari, Kankuro and the street full of people are frozen in silent surprise at my sudden outburst. I stroll over to him and grip his body by the throat hard enough to draw blood with my nails.
What attack?! I scream into his mind only. His body responds with a strong shudder.
Nothing! No one! I don’t know anything! He screams his lies at me, but I am not willing to listen to him. I step back a few feet and release his mind into his body. He collapses onto his hands and knees, coughing and sputtering.
“Mizuke, what the hell is going on?” Temari shouts, she has taken a defensive posture facing us.
You will give me the information I want, willingly or not…
I begin to tear my way through his mind, looking for information related to any kind of attack. I’m not bothering to be gentle and his screams tear their way through the crowd around us. People on all sides of me cringe back in fear – all except Temari and Kankuro. They know I would not do something like this without a reason. He clutches his head and his screams increase.
“Stop fighting me!” I scream at him. “It will do you no good!”
There! I think, finally finding success. There’s the information. The attack is coming from… Oh God… No…
His body crumples to the ground as blood pours out his nose and mouth. He will probably live, but he will not wake up for a long, long time.
“Mizuke, what was that about?” Kankuro asks in a voice he is trying to keep calm while watching the people around us carefully.
“Lord Kazekage!!!!” I scream into the air and into Gaara’s mind at the same time. As quickly as I can blink, he appears beside me in a swirl of sand.
“Mizuke?” Gaara questions glancing at the injured man. On the outside he is cold and blank, on the inside his mind is in panic. I have only ever screamed to him like this once before – when I was taken by Orochimaru.
Suna is in danger! I need to see! Lift me into the sky… I need range, I try to explain in a hurry. I throw his arms around my middle and alter his perception, with him standing at my back. I’m trying not to cause more panic around us by blurting out the problem. It would help if I was not in panic myself. Without another word his sand lifts us both into the sky but wraps around us in a complete protective orb. He knows his sand will not interfere with my mental ability, and he is afraid danger could come to me with so much exposure. He activates his sand eye to keep watch.
Take me with you, he orders.
I carry both of our minds out into the desert. I extend out 10 miles, circling the village in all directions and find nothing. I stretch out 20 miles further, circling again. I am about to pull back when I see them. An entire army headed straight for Suna – well within the range of my scan if I had been bothering to look.
I’m so sorry! I cry out to him in frustration. I haven’t been doing sweeps since we learned of Orochimaru’s death! They are too close!
How did you know of this? He asks, with his mind already launching into thinking about preparations in the village.
A man in the street, I explain. He didn’t expect to encounter me. He panicked and his thoughts caught my attention.
The one who was bleeding? He asks, already knowing the answer.
Yes. I confirm. He is from Iwa. They have been working with a council member… Takeshi! That bastard! They hoped to slip up on us unnoticed and they almost succeeded!!
Let me speak to the people, he orders again, dropping the sand to only a platform beneath us so that we can be seen by the people. They have already started gathering in small groups to see what all the commotion is about. He stands behind me with his hands at my sides. I quickly snatch every mind in the village I can identify.
I have them.
People of Suna, he begins, and I can feel surprise ripple through all of them. This is your Kazekage. Danger has been spotted heading towards our village. I need you all to remain calm, gather only the items you need for an emergency, and proceed to the shelters. Ask the genin shinobi around you if you need assistance. There is no need to panic. If we prepare now, we will be able to keep everyone safe and face the oncoming danger well prepared. All shinobi teams – chunin level and higher – are to report to me immediately at the top of the Kazekage tower.
-------------------------------
After Gaara and I reached the top of the Kazekage tower, I took a place upon the highest point. I am trying to separate my mind into three distinct sections. With the first and smallest, I maintain my illusion. With the second, I am doing my best to radiate a sensation of calm out into the village to wash over the people. It seems to be working remarkably well, aided by their preparations during similar events before. With the third, I am keeping a careful scan of the approaching army – relaying any details to Gaara that seem noteworthy.
Iwa is the village hidden in the rocks, from the land of Earth. Their shinobi use powerful forms of Earth jutsu – which can be particularly damaging when launching an assault against a large area.
Gaara, I call to him only, I want to seek aid from Konoha.
I have already sent word.
I will be faster. I explain. Please. One day could make all the difference…
Very well, he agrees hesitantly. But be careful…
I stop scanning the enemy army long enough to reach that segment of my mind towards Konoha. I have been able to reach all the way there before… but I haven’t tried recently. At the halfway point, I stumble over something unexpected. Naruto!! His ecstatic thoughts are easy to pick up on, even when moving fast. Sakura and their additional teammate, Sai, are with him. They are heading to Suna!
Naruto!! I scream into his mind in excitement.
“Ahhhh!!!!” he screams in surprise, falling from the branch he was about to leap onto and tumbling end-over-end onto the ground.
“Naruto!” Sakura screams. “Are you okay?”
“Did you guys hear that?!” he shouts, darting his eyes around the forest floor.
“Naruto, that was me! Mizuke! Sorry!” I call to him again a bit softer.
“Mizuke…?” he asks, shocked.
“Sorry!” I say again, to all three of them now. “Yes it’s me. We need your help! Suna is about to be attacked! An army from Iwa will be here in less than a day. Please send word to the Hokage!” I send a mental image of the army into their minds.
“HOLY CRAP!!” Naruto shouts. “We’re on our way Mizuke! You tell Gaara we’ll be there in no time!” He takes off running before Sakura can even get a single word in.
“Ughhh!!!” Sakura shouts in exasperation, “Sai, return to Konoha quickly. Give word to the Hokage of what we’ve been told.”
“Yes,” he states in an emotionless but efficient tone, turning and departing immediately.
“We’re on our way, Mizuke,” Sakura says with intense determination, hurrying to catch up with Naruto.
Thank you, all of you.
I pull back to my body and see a Baki watching me pointedly. His face – as always – is half covered and he watches me with concern in his eyes. I see his hands reach for me before I even know I am falling. He catches me up in his arms and slows my fall, despite being surprised by my weight. He leans down to whisper in my ear.
“You need to be careful, Honorable Wife.” Baki is always so formal. He feels that paying me respect is equivalent to paying respect to Gaara for his choice in me. “We need your strength and the Kazekage needs your safety.” If anything happens to you… his thoughts continue.
I smile up at him and only then realize that blood is running from my nose. I realize this only a second too late as Gaara sees it and materializes at my side.
“I told you to be careful,” he scolds, truly angry with me and wiping the blood from my face with his robes. You are trying to do too much!
“But I can help!” I object, wanting to burst into tears at my sudden weakness.
“No, My Love,” He snatches my face in his hands and brings me up for a swift kiss, calming me and then pulling back to look in my eyes. “When they get here… I will need you at full strength. Stop sending out the calm to the people. They are already assembled safely underground. Keeping calm now is their responsibility and the work of the genin. You can keep scanning the army but only periodically. Just keep an eye out for change.”
“Fine,” I pout but rest more fully into Baki’s arms. A sudden wave of fatigue hits me after I release the activity from the secondary portion of my mind. Baki shouts for Temari to retrieve Michiko to tend to me. He does not want to see me separated from Gaara’s side at such a time.
“Did you reach Konoha?” Gaara hates asking, not wanting me to try again if I did not.
“I didn’t need to,” I explain. “Naruto’s team was on their way here already. Their teammate, Sai, headed back to give information to Tsunade. I showed them the army. Naruto and Sakura are hurrying here, now.”
“You are amazing,” he kisses me lightly on the forehead and then leaves me in Baki’s care and returns to continue giving orders to the gathered shinobi.
We will be as prepared as we possibly can be. I am at least glad that my abilities have given us some advanced warning. I only wish Kakashi had been with them. I could use someone strong who knows my secret.
