Once again venturing down the hallway, working her way back to her room. It was somewhat dreary and void of sound. The map helped her to navigate through the labyrinth of hallways. Now glad she brought it with her. Preoccupied with the scroll, Sarah failed to notice two red eyes peering out from the darkness as they approached her from behind. The owner of them had been following her ever since she left the kitchen. He was surprised Sarah didn’t detect him when she passed him in the halls. This was a perfect opportunity to deal with this matter, when no one was looking.
"Damn it! These hallways are impossible," she muttered, completely unaware of the approaching danger. "Why can't that bastard just let me go and I can go back home."
The eyes getting closer and closer until they stopped several feet from her, keeping out of the light. Apparently the woman was not a sensory ninja. That is if she was a ninja to begin with. He had been told she was, but so far, saw no sign of it.
An arm reached behind, pulling out a long blade. The sword appeared to be straight, but the handle could not be seen, likely due to it being darker in color. However, there was a distinguishable difference between the handle and blade.
The hairs on the back of her neck stood on end. Startled by this sensation, she jumped at the feeling of a presence behind her. Sarah turned swiftly then gasped in horror, dropping the map.
"Sasuke!" Her eyes were on the weapon in his hand.
"So, you remember my name?” he remarked resentfully. "You’re not wanted here."
"I'm sorry about what I said about your brother, it--"
"I told you never to bring him up!" He seethed. His cold stare unwavering, as she flinched like before. "This is Orochimaru’s fault. He brought you here."
Her heart hammered in her chest, taking another step back. “I have no grudge against you.”
"Just by being here, you insult me," he stated bluntly. "My training is more important than his whatever you want to call it, affair." Using an attack the Sannin taught him, snakes shot out of his sleeve attacking her.
"No!" Sarah screamed as she tried to jump out of the way. Being confined by the crowded walls, all she could do was jump back a few feet. "Sasuke, please! I don't want trouble with you. Just leave me in peace! PLEASE!"
"Can’t do that." Unwavering, his red eyes not blinking. “You’re the cause of my current problem. Never cross an Uchiha.” With another wave of his arm, more snakes slithered out of his sleeve
Sarah tried to take another jump back, but this time one of the snakes managed to wrap around her leg, preventing her from moving. She was completely unarmed and at a disadvantage. She dodged a few other snakes but one nicked her ankle. She cried out in pain, collapsing to the floor.
"No one is around to hear you scream. You already exhausted Kabuto from running your little errands, and now he’s gone to get some sleep."
Tears sprang from her eyes as she felt venom enter her blood stream. She now understood why they had cautioned her to avoid Sasuke. She gave a few whimpers.
His expression fixed in a permanent frown. Without another word he lunged forward, intending to target her head. He did not expect for Sarah to roll over at the last second. His sword clanged on the stone floor. “Good move. So you really are a shinobi."
"A kunoichi from the Village Hidden Underground!” Wincing in pain, she struggled to pry the snake off of her leg. She could feel her body getting heavy. Even with a good amount of knowledge on toxins and poisons, she had no idea what the snake injected her with. There were different kinds of snakes, and not all of them were poisonous. Some could actually paralyze a person.
"That won’t help you here. So why don’t you stop this nonsense and let me end your stay here. Then we’ll both be happy."
With her trying to pry the snake from around her ankle, she made a grave error. Never take your eyes off the enemy. He swung his sword again, this time inflicting damage, in the arm. Hearing the skin tear from the blade as it pierced her skin, immediately causing blood to splatter the floor.
Sarah cried out as a hot stinging sensation from the metal pierced her skin, creating a large gash in her arm. On reflex, she used her good arm to press a hand against the wound, trying to slow the bleeding down. The pain was too great for her to continue her efforts. It was then the snake finally released its hold on her and disappeared like all the other snakes from the jutsu.
"Sasuke... Please!" she begged unable to hold back tears. She tried to stand, but her poisoned leg wasn't going to move. Her good arm fell to the floor to support her body. If only she could get away from him. She used her good leg to push her body back, dragging her limp leg across the floor. Try as she might, it was ineffective in aiding her escape.
“Stop whining and die like a shinobi!” the teen replied harshly, leering at her. She left herself wide open. Seizing the opportunity, he took another swing of his sword. The blade slashed along the top of her chest, through the robe, just above her breasts. More blood escaped, splattering the wall. Luckily the new wound wasn't too deep, since she jerked away from his attack.
Sarah howled in pain.
“Damn... missed the neck,” he huffed.
The force of the blow, pushed her body backwards. Her body scraped along the floor several feet, tearing the back of the robe, creating red abrasions on the flesh underneath. With one arm holding herself up, she had to take her already injured arm and drape it across her chest, preventing her breasts from being visible. Attempting to protect herself, but in turn making a grave error, Sarah rolled over so her back was to him.
If he didn’t already detest her, he would have been impressed by her wilfulness. He snorted. Her stubbornness began to annoy him. “So you can still move. Well not for long!” With one last swing, the blade slashed her lower back on an upward diagonal swing, across her spinal column. Her robe nearly fell off her body as she collapsed to the ground, no longer able to move in the slightest. Blood pooled around her.
Sarah screamed again, heart racing like mad, as if it was about to pump out of her chest. This was the end of her. In the position she laid, blood easily oozed out of her chest and back, creating a dark crimson puddle on the floor around her. Although with the dim lighting of the sconces along the hall, the puddle looked black. 'So long life,' she thought. 'At least I won't need to deal with that jerk who brought me here. This is his fault.'
Wanting to be sure, Sasuke brought his sword up over his head. About to deliver the killing blow, but before he could do anything, something bit his arm, forcefully. Eyes widened, he looked up to see a rather large snake. Not even a split second later, a flash of pale knuckles collided with the side of his face, sounds of breaking bones echoed throughout the hallway. From the force of the blow Sasuke's back slammed into the wall, cracking the wall. His sword was knocked out of his hand, clanging to the floor.
The snake nin himself now stood where Sasuke was. A look of pure rage on his face. For the moment, he ignored his left foot that stood in his lover's blood. "What do you think you're doing boy?!!" his voice seethed venomously.
He couldn't believe what he was seeing. The woman he was growing fond of was hunched over, bleeding profusely. She was covered in her own blood, if not for her raspy breathing he would have thought she were dead. The teen's blade was covered in her blood. He never could have predicted the Uchiha would do this.
Sasuke's body slumped to the floor before staggering back to his feet. He then took his hand, snapping his jaw back into place. Sasuke turned to see the Sannin. "What does it look like?" Sasuke retorted, as best as possible with a broken jaw. "For months now you've pined over this woman and neglected my training. I'm here willingly, she is not. Yesterday, you were more brutal with me during training all because of her. It’s your fault this happened." Each word said was slurred due to the incapacitated jaw.
Sarah was lying there on the floor. Was it her imagination or did she hear Orochimaru's voice? Going into shock from the blood loss, it was too difficult to determine who just rescued her. All she could do was lay there as her entire body went numb. She didn't even have the strength to cry.
The snake nin was fuming. "This is your last mistake boy!" he hissed. “You will not get another chance!” With his speed, he ran at the teen. Unable to dodge, Orochimaru's heel easily caught the Uchiha in the side. Sasuke was sent flying down the hall. Once his body hit the floor hard, he rolled a few feet further. But Orochimaru wasn’t through with him yet.
Sasuke tried to get up, but couldn’t. He had trouble breathing from the wind being knocked out of him, coughing up blood. He heard a crack from his ribs, certain it was broken. This was like nothing he ever experienced before. Not even when he fought Gaara in the Chunin exams or when he chose to leave the village and had to fight Naruto, nearly leaving him for dead. Not once did he ever see Orochimaru lose his temper like this. The snake nin was completely out of control.
Not giving him time to react or recover, Orochimaru lunged at him again. Sending out several snakes, each one bit their target causing Sasuke to cry out in pain. Blood leaked out from each puncture wound. Orochimaru then swung around, kicking the teen in the head.
Black spots swarmed his vision. The blow to the head threw him further down the corridor. His body slammed into the wall before he could even wince. Eyes were out of focus as he saw a dark blur rush towards him again, but then a silhouette of another person came into view.
"My Lord! Stop! You're going to kill him!" Kabuto rushed in from behind Sasuke. Pushing on Orochimaru’s chest, trying to stop him from attacking. It was a risk and he knew that, but he had to do something.
When Kabuto was about to crawl under the sheets, he heard a gut wrenching, curdling scream. His heart filled with dread. There was no question about it that scream came from a woman. His eyes had widened. Sarah! That could only mean one thing... Sasuke attacked her.
In just his sleeping clothes, he was quick to pull himself out of bed and ran towards the screams, which changed to yells of a furious male. Not wasting any time, he came upon his Lord showing Sasuke no mercy. He could see the teen was nearly unconscious and bleeding from several wounds. But that wasn’t all. Behind Orochimaru, he saw Sarah was in critical condition. Kabuto had to stop his Lord and fast.
Orochimaru paused momentarily feeling someone forcing him back. He would have lashed out at whoever it was if he hadn't heard Kabuto's voice, snapping him back into the rationalization of his actions. His mind and judgment were clouded by anger. The Sannin’s eyes went to Sarah, and for the first time in his life, he felt his heart ache. The woman was barely recognizable, in shredded clothing, bleeding out. Going over to her, he knelt down.
Kabuto backed away, giving the snake nin some space. Both victims were in severe need of medical attention. The probability of Sasuke having a few broken bones and internal bleeding was high. He was reduced to a bloody heap on the floor several meters away. There was no way the teen was going to get up on his own.
Sarah, on the other hand, was on the brink of death. She had several gaping wounds. Kabuto suspected that she had a chest wound by the way her arm was tucked under her. Her back... he did not like the sight of it... the cut was so deep, it exposed her back bone.
"Sarah?" Orochimaru called to her in a soft voice, resting a tender hand on her cheek. He had to know if she could hear him. Sympathy could be seen in his eyes, which was uncommon for him. Not caring if her blood got on him, he carefully turned her over to rest in his arms. To his relief, he saw her eyes were moving every so often, a sign that she was still alive.
Sarah barely could feel herself being moved from the floor into something more comfortable. Her vision was too blurry to see what was going on.
Kabuto went over to see if Sasuke was responsive. “I tried to warn you...” he breathed. “But you wouldn’t listen.” He looked over to his Lord to see how gentle he was being towards Sarah.
After assessing the damage, he stood and walked over to Sarah. Seeing the gash in her upper torso, he knelt down. His hands glowing green as he began to heal the wound. "They're both going to need immediate medical attention, sir."
A warm feeling entered her chest, causing her to regain her senses just a little. She caught a glimpse of silver and the reflection of glasses. She could tell it was Kabuto.
"Ka…bu…to… help me..." she whimpered.
"I'll heal you up in no time," Kabuto responded quietly. He looked up at Orochimaru. Concerned for him as well. “My Lord?”
“Sarah’s wounds are to be tended to first.” Was all the older man said, his eyes not leaving her mangled body.
"Oro...chi...maru..." she called out for him, recognizing his voice.
“It’s alright,” Orochimaru answered in a soothing voice as he combed his fingers lightly through her not so brown locks. “You’re safe now.”
Surprised by his behavior, the medic kept quiet and continued to do what he could for Sarah. Addressing the worst of her injuries before anything else.
Despite feeling the warm power of Kabuto’s ninjutsu, darkness crept in. Her head went limp, eyes closing as she lost consciousness. The last thing Sarah felt before everything went black was Orochimaru’s hand against the side of her face.
-
Sarah woke, feeling comfortable. For a few moments everything was foggy, but in time the memories came rushing back. Her eyes shot open. Feeling lost, confused, and in pain. Sasuke attacked her, nearly killing her, but couldn't finish the job because... because someone stopped him. No, not someone. Orochimaru. He showed up and saved her life. She looked over to her left to see Kabuto was there at her bedside, checking her vitals.
"Kabuto…" she breathed. "I'm alive…" the statement was more of a question, but in her weakened condition it didn't sound like it.
The sound of her stirring caught his attention. His eyes went to her "Try not to move, you're still in pretty bad shape," he cautioned, taking a needle out of his pouch. "This will help with the pain." He then lifted her good arm and pierced her skin, injecting some painkillers into her system.
Tears resurfaced once again from the pain she was feeling. She then winced from the prick of the needle. She observed Kabuto administering the drug, concern written all over his face.
"Sasuke...he...he..." she struggled to say that he tried to kill her..
"I know," He reassured her. "He won't be able to hurt you anymore. It was a good thing we got there when we did though. Mind you, you’ve been unconscious for nearly two days."
"You serious!?" she croaked.
"I am," he replied. "I had to heal your chest and back, which were the worst of your injuries. You were sedated while your body was in that much pain. I’m sorry, but it was necessary."
When Kabuto treated her, the medic noticed the toxins in her bloodstream. The toxins were a type in which paralyzes the body. That explained how Sasuke was able to render her defenceless.
Sarah gave a small nod and relaxed while the drug took affect. "Was it just me… or was Orochimaru there too?" she asked suddenly. The memory of a light caress on her cheek still resonated in her mind, which confused her. If that was Orochimaru's hand, who was a cold-blooded killer, why was he so gentle to her?
He continued his examination, making sure her bandages weren't soiled. "Yes, he was. He showed up just in time to stop Sasuke," the medic replied.
"Why?" she asked. "Why would he care? He's my captor." Sarah was surprised she hadn't seen the snake nin yet. If he was her savour, why didn't he come to check on her?
"I don’t have an answer for you," he admitted. "My Lord does not seek approval. His reasons are his own."
She sighed. "How bad is it?" she asked, half expecting Kabuto to not be fully honest with her.
"Not too bad," he answered. "The bleeding has stopped. I'm surprised he didn't hit anything vital though. You'll probably be able to move again by tomorrow, as long as you don't push yourself. Mind you, your back is a different matter. Stitching the back was tedious. For the next week, your movements must be limited or else you be may left with a scar."
"Needless to say, I'm bedridden for the rest of the day then." Sarah turned her head away from him. It was then she realized something about the snake nin. From hearing Kabuto call him 'Lord' all the time, she wondered if she would be ordered to do the same. Sasuke didn't refer to him by that title. Then again Sasuke didn't like the guy either. "Where is he? He saved me and yet he's not here?"
With the pain subsiding it made it easier for her to speak without stuttering, but her voice was completely soft unlike her usual feisty tone.
The medic frowned, knowing the answer. "He's still in a foul mood. He dealt more damage than was necessary. Once I'm done here, I have to tend to Sasuke."
Realizing Orochimaru beat the hell out of the teen, she frowned. Sarah turned back to her friend. "Why help that asshole? He's the reason I'm like this. He deserves to suffer!" She tried to sound spunky, but her voice squeaked. There was no way she could get it any higher.
Kabuto didn’t bother looking her in the eye as he worked. "His injuries were near fatal. If they weren’t tended to, he could have died."
"Then let him," Sarah tried to snap as she looked away again. "But let me guess, your 'Lord' has something in mind planned for him too? I'm not stupid, you know. He's very manipulative. Heard he captures people so he can implant his consciousness into them, essentially taking over their bodies.”
Kabuto looked at her surprised. "How did you know that?"
"You're not stupid. You know I'm a recon spy. After Orochimaru attacked the Hidden Leaf, messengers were sent to all hidden villages about Orochimaru's movements." She wanted to snort but when she tried, she winced from the sting of her chest wound.
His expression eased. "Hmm... they wasted no time in getting that out. Though it will do them no good." He sounded a bit ominous. "If you must know, Sasuke is my Lord's next vessel. We can't have him dying on us just yet." Kabuto finished what he was doing when there was a loud crash in another room.
Kabuto sighed, adjusting his glasses. Muttering to himself, "Even after two days, it has done nothing to calm his temper." He paused. "Excuse me." Kabuto stood, leaving the room. After he left, she could hear a few more crashes and an angry hiss. Soon after she could hear Kabuto's voice, but couldn't make out what he was saying.
Sarah wanted to cringe but knew it would have been better for her to just lie still and rest. She wished she was fine and could use her skills to find out what was being said. Normally, it wouldn’t take much for her to get up and put her ear to the door to listen. Perhaps then she would actually get some answers. That was probably the only way she'd get a straight answer anyway.
After a few minutes, the noise quieted down. Silent for a while before the door opened. This time it was Orochimaru himself.
Sarah turned her head to the door, nearly expecting it to be Kabuto again. Quite to her surprise it was her abductor, whom she hadn't seen since the day of their conversation in his throne room.
"Orochimaru," she said quietly.
His expression was calm, but bore no smirk, yet he showed no sign of weakness either. Closing the door behind him, he approached the bed. "How are you feeling?" he asked.
Sarah wasn't sure if she wanted to answer. She could see there was something in his eyes that she'd never seen from him. It was a combination of anger, relief, and restrained emotion
"Better now that you've saved me," she replied quietly, being honest. "Thank you. He was going to kill me."
"I know." His hand clenched into a fist, as a hint of anger was heard in his voice. He sat on the bed beside her. His hand went to her cheek like before.
She gasped quietly at feeling his hand so gentle on her cheek. She wasn't sure what to say. Wanting to change the topic, she decided to talk about the day he brought her there. "Why did you kiss me?" she suddenly inquired. "Why force me to have sex when you could have just knocked me out, brought me here, and have sex with an unconscious body."
"I could have done that,” he admitted, “my intention was to pleasure you." He decided to be honest, at least for the moment. "To see how you would react to me." He leaned forward, kissing her more tenderly than he had done in the past.
Sarah gasped again before her breath was taken away when their lips met. Except this time it was unlike any other kiss she ever had before. His lips were smooth and soft. The feeling left her toes curling while her body melted. Her eyes involuntarily closed as she immediately found herself kissing back. She hated herself for falling victim to his charm, but there was something else as well. It was as if she wanted to kiss him as a thank you, even though she already had.
Pulling away, not wanting to go too far while she was healing, his eyes gazed into hers. It pained him to see her like that.
She gazed back at him with surprise, worry, and something unidentifiable in her eyes. "What makes me so special?" she whispered. If she wasn't 'hospitalized', she had a feeling he would have seduced her. Even she herself wanted to feel something other than pain.
Her question was something he couldn’t really explain. He didn’t know himself in that sense. Taking her hand, he placed it against his chest. She could feel his heart beat faster. "Because... This is what you do to me," he whispered.
Her own heart nearly skipped a beat feeling his. His hand held hers with care. With the sudden inability to move it, her hand was frozen by her own free will. Her hand continued to rest against his chest, as his slipped from hers, taking comfort in knowing this cold-blooded killer was still human, who still had feelings.
Carefully, he raised her wounded arm to rest against his cheek. She didn't try to stop him. With one of his hands still against the side of her face while both of hers were resting against his chest and face, she felt her body heat up. His skin felt warm to the touch, unlike his eyes were most of the time, but now the look in his eyes was different. Sarah didn't understand why she was allowing this S-ranked criminal to do this without putting up a fight.
"Sssarah..." his voice cooed. He still couldn't understand this effect she had on him.
Her heart sped up as her name rolled off his tongue. The way he said it, sounded as if her name was created solely for him. Hers was extremely rare. Was it fate for her to be born only to become a possession of Orochimaru’s? But she wasn’t somebody to be controlled or used as property. She was a person. Although, by the sensitive way he spoke to her, she didn’t feel as though she was his property.
The snake nin had never known real love, he didn’t know how to act in such a way. He only ever did what he wanted. Now, as if he wasn’t in control of his own body, it did things automatically. Showing him something he never knew or ever experienced before, and that alone unsettled him. He would rather bring his old sensei back to life just to relive their final battle instead of feeling these strange emotions.
While staring at the woman in front of him, his body was immobile. He found himself not wanting to leave her side. He wanted to stay there and make her happy. Yes, he given her pleasure and he wanted to do it again, but now wasn’t the time to do so. Other things had to be dealt with first, namely her well being.
