Chapter 5: ESA Beginnings
Naruto looked at Sasuke over their breakfast. Eggs and toast. Not fancy but healthy. And Naruto had even put some tomato slices on Sasuke’s toast. When he’d gotten a look at it, he simply commented, “I remember you like it. I don’t get why but you do.” He’d noticed that when Sasuke’s previous life was proven the Uchiha seemed to be happy.
Sasuke happily took a bite and raised a brow to signal Naruto to say whatever was on his mind.
Naruto just smiled. “So do you know what kind of, uh…ESA you want?” He’d forgotten the name for a second but knew much better than to say ‘pet’.
Sasuke thought about it for a second before he took his pad and wrote down,
I’m thinking a dog.
The blond nodded. “That sounds good. After breakfast we’ll go to the store and get supplies. Then we can go to the Inuzuka Humane Society.” He took a bite of eggs. “It’s run by Kiba’s family. You met him in the hospital but I don’t think you remember.”
What did he look like?
Naruto chuckled. “Messy hair, facial tattoos, a bit like a dog himself.” He laughed when he saw the recognition at that statement. “Glad to know you still agree.” His breath halted when he saw that smirk that used to annoy him. Now it proves his Sasuke is still in there. “So sound good?”
Sasuke nodded and finished up his toast and eggs.

First they went to the local pet shop to get the needed items. They had an employee help them as Naruto had to admit he knew nothing about keeping dogs as pets. The only downside to the experience was that the woman who helped them kept trying to flirt with Sasuke. And Naruto could tell it was making the Uchiha really uncomfortable.
“Hey. You okay?” he asked when they got in the car.
Sasuke looked at him and gave a tiny smile and a nod. It definitely wasn’t something he wanted to happen again but he wouldn’t let that ruin this. And the brilliant grin the angel gave him made everything worth it.
Soon they were pulling up to a large building with the sign ‘Inuzuka Humane Society’ in front. They parked, got out, and made their way inside. As luck would have it, Kiba was actually manning the front desk.
“Kiba!” Naruto held Sasuke’s hand, giving it a gentle squeeze.
Kiba grinned and came over. “Hey man!” He saw the raised brow from Sasuke and laughed. “Guess you don’t remember me, huh? Yeah you were pretty out of it I guess.” He did a quick dodge from a punch by Naruto. “Oh relax. So, what’s up?”
Naruto relaxed when he felt Sasuke squeeze his hand. As if telling him he’s fine. “We want to get a service dog for Sasuke. An ESA?”
Understanding flashed in the dog lover’s eyes. So Kiba nodded. “Yeah, we can help you guys. We have a few potentials who have recently passed basic training so we can see if any take to you and you to them.”
Sasuke nodded but it was obvious he wasn’t too thrilled with the word ‘training’.
Once again there was understanding. “This way.” He led them to the kennels and let Sasuke look over the dogs. They were all patiently yet happily waiting for attention. A good sign that they won’t be too easily excited. When the raven was out of hearing range he said, “It’s really bad huh?”
Naruto nodded with a sigh. “Really. It’ll need more training though right?”
“Shikamaru should be able to help you with that part. He’s the best with animals after all.” He looked to Naruto. “I’ll help in every way I can. We all want him back. For both of you.”
Naruto smiled. “Thanks man. We can do it.”
Kiba chuckled. “Believe it?”
Naruto let out a laugh. “Yup!” When he looked back to Sasuke he saw him sitting next to one of the pens. “You found someone?” When he walked over he saw a golden retriever laying down with its eyes on Sasuke. “Perfect!”
Kiba chuckled. “That breed is known for being one of the best for ESA. This is a male. He’s a little over a year old and finished his training with flying stars. That is definitely a perfect choice.” He walked over and undid the lock on the door. “We’ll take you guys to a little greeting room. That way we can make sure. Then we’ll do the adoption process.”
He picked up a rope leash and went in. He then made a fist and held it up, palm forward. Then he pushed it forward slightly. “Sit.”
The dog immediately sat up and then lifted his head to make it easier to put the leash on.
Sasuke watched with wide eyes and also stood up. That was amazing…
After a quick test meeting they were going ahead with the adoption process. Naruto smiled when Kiba asked for the dog’s new name. “So, what’s his name?” He chuckled when he saw a raised a brow. “I know you can’t say it, but I can. And everyone needs a name. Right?”
Sasuke nodded at that before pausing, his dark eyes going a bit distant. “Name…” Flashes of not knowing his name going through his mind.
Naruto walked over, gently laying a hand on Sasuke’s arm. When Sasuke blinked and looked to him, he took his hand again. “Hey. Come on. What’s his name?” He spoke in a soft voice.
Sasuke gave a grateful smile before he took out his pad and after a second wrote down,
Chidori
Naruto grinned. “Great choice.” He had picked up that praise helps. He looked to Kiba. “His name is Chidori.”
“Whoa. Never heard that name.” He wrote it down before looking up again. “It’s awesome dude!”
Sasuke rolled his eyes as his hand moved over Chidori’s head, gently petting the calm dog. He took the pad back.
And how am I supposed to call him?
Naruto chuckled. “Don’t worry. We have a friend who can help with all that.” He turned to Kiba. “Never had a dog.” Aka he doesn’t know what to do.
With a laugh Kiba gave them a rundown of keeping a dog. Was simple and both Naruto and Sasuke agreed they can easily do it. “There are also a few general commands you should know. Sit, stay, lay down. That sort of stuff. We always teach them both signs and vocal commands. Eventually a dog goes deaf but still needs ways to follow…” his eyes went to Sasuke briefly who was focusing on the dog. “commands.” He felt like he shouldn’t say ‘orders’.
“Okay. Let’s get those. Then we can head out.”
The next few minutes had them learning and practicing the base signs. “Great. You guys will do just fine. Remember to call if you need help.”
Sasuke made both of them feel amazing when he gave a genuine smile. And then he mouthed, [Thank you].

Once they got Chidori set up at the house, Naruto called Shikamaru. Luckily, the somewhat lazy man immediately offered to come over in 30 minutes to see the dog and Sasuke’s reactions to each other.
Naruto smiled. “Thanks man. See ya then.” He hung up and sat next to Sasuke. “Shikamaru will be here in about half an hour and we can get started on this.”
Sasuke was on the couch petting Chidori who was lying next to him. He handed Naruto the pad.
What did you talk to Tsunade about on the phone?
Naruto sighed and rubbed his head. “Figured you’d eventually ask. I didn’t want to tell you until she’s sure but you deserve to know.” He faced the raven fully. “Tsunade found traces of a drug that can cause amnesia in your blood. She believes that it’s working its way out of your system and she will want to keep track of it.”
Sasuke was quiet for a minute before he wrote down.
Do you think the drug is why I can’t talk?
Naruto thought about it. “Well…it would make sense. Especially with what you remembered yesterday.” That other guy saying the drug was to ‘fix his mouth problem’ was a big hint as well. He was glad to see that Sasuke merely nodded and wasn’t upset about the reminder. “I’ll ask Granny about it later, okay?” He got another nod before there was a knock on the door. “It’s probably Shika.” He got up to answer. “Hey Shikamaru. He’s in the living room.”
Naruto led Shikamaru in. “Hello Sasuke. I’m Shikamaru Nara. I didn’t visit at the hospital because it wouldn’t have done any good. And I don’t like hospitals.”
Sasuke nodded and watched the man crouch in front of the couch. He calmly held out his hand for Chidori to sniff.
Naruto sat next to Sasuke. “His name is Chidori.”
“Do you have an idea of what you need from him?” After getting a quick lick to the hand he began petting the dog.
Naruto looked to Sasuke. “You mind if I tell him some stuff?” When Sasuke shook his head, he quickly explained the diagnosis and that Sasuke had a ‘relapse’ while Naruto was at work. He didn’t go into detail but Shikamaru obviously knew what he meant.
Shikamaru stood before sitting in the chair. “We’ll use hand signals for commands from Sasuke and vocal ones from Naruto.” Once they nod he adds, “I also suggest you two learn sign language.”
Naruto blinked. “You know sign language?”
Shikamaru shrugged. “Was a way to pass time and became useful later on.”
Naruto looked to Sasuke. “What do you think?”
Sasuke’s eyes were determined and he nodded. He wanted to be able speak and if this was the only way, he’d grab hold and never let go.
Shikamaru smiled. “I’ll teach Sasuke. And then Sasuke can teach Naruto.”
“What? You don’t want to teach me?” Naruto had a teasing look.
Shikamaru looked at him. “No. Besides, you’ll be at work.” He then raised a brow, hinting that this is another way to keep Sasuke calm and from having a relapse.
Naruto quickly caught on. “Got a point there.” He looked to Sasuke. “Sound good?”
Sasuke was a bit stunned that he would actually be teaching the angel something. He was slightly worried that this might be a test. But after a moment of thought he decided that if it is, then he’ll definitely pass it.
When he gave a determined nod Naruto smiled wide. “Great!”
Shikamaru nodded as well. “Good.” He looked at his watch. “We can start now.”
Naruto grunted. “Tch. You just want to avoid office duty.” He was obviously joking.
Shikamaru just smiled though and shrugged, not denying it. “That too.” And then Sasuke surprised them by chuckling. He seemed a bit surprised himself. Shikamaru seemed to consider something. “You can make sounds, correct?”
Sasuke nodded and Naruto said, “It’s a bit odd but he can do it. Why?”
“Because we can also train Chidori to react to sounds in case Sasuke can’t sign or give hand signals.”
“Whoa! Yeah, that should be good.” Naruto smirked. “Since I don’t have to work right now does that mean you’ll be teaching me too?”
Shikamaru gave a long-suffering sigh. “Unfortunately, yes. I’ll teach both of you the alphabet in sign language as well as a few general signs that will help him. This way you two can start with each other right away.” He took the pad that Sasuke offered him.
I’m ready to start.
Shika nodded. “Very well. Let’s start with the alphabet and simple words.” And then he immediately showed them the signs. Helping them understand and get the placements correct. They both caught on rather fast which was definitely a big help.
“Pretty cool that you can communicate through simple hand movements. What do you think Sasuke?” Naruto turned to the raven with a big grin. He was amazed at how much you can truly say with your hands.
Sasuke reached for the pad before he paused. He turned to Naruto and signed, “Yes. You d-o not s-u-c-k.”
“Hey! Now that’s just rude!” He was smiling though, loving how this already seemed to be bringing him back.
Sasuke did a slight smirk. “Sign it.”
After a second of thought, during which he noticed Shikamaru watching with his own smirk, he signed “That is rude.” His blue eyes moved to Shika.
The man nodded. “Good.”
Naruto looked to Sasuke. “See? I’m good.” Then he actually stuck out his tongue.
Shikamaru looked to Sasuke. “‘Do’ is this,” showed him. “‘Suck’ is this,” showed him.
“Hey!” Naruto’s voice held a bit of a whine. “Now he’s gonna say it a bunch!” It really was nice to say that Sasuke was going to ‘say’ something. Felt like normal.
Shikamaru merely shrugged. “Figured he should know.”
“My,” Sasuke paused as he rethought how to phrase it with what he knew. “P-r-o-v-e-s you do not suck.”
Naruto laughed. “Guess that’s right.” He turned to Shikamaru. “What’s ‘proves’?”
Shikamaru showed them before saying, “Considering how fast he picks up on it we can do three lessons a week.” He made a face. “Temari won’t let me dodge work any longer than that.” He shrugged. “Troublesome. We’ll use our lesson time wisely. Half will be for signing the other half will be for dog training.”
Naruto’s voice was completely sincere and obviously grateful. “Thank you, Shikamaru. This really means a lot to us.”
Sasuke nodded with a small smile. “It d-o-e-s.”
Shikamaru gave a small chuckle. “Good. This is ‘does’.” He showed it.
Naruto suddenly straightened as he remembered something. “Oh! So we were wondering how Sasuke will call Chidori.”
As usual, Shikamaru had an answer immediately for that. “We’ll assign a sound and a hand-sign to him. No use spelling out his name each time.”
Naruto frowned. “Well how do people usually say names then?”
“When with people you don’t know you tend to have to spell it. Otherwise you usually start with the first letter, move your hand to the right as you switch signs to the last letter. Doesn’t work with every name obviously but it’s a time saver.” He shrugged. “Many use personal signs as well. Like nicknames.” He considered Sasuke. “What noise do you think you can make no matter what?”
Sasuke thought about it. He hadn’t really experimented with what noises he can make. So he shrugged. “Not s-u-r-e.”
Shika signed ‘sure’ and watched Sasuke repeat it. “Try humming and snapping your fingers at the same time.”
Sasuke raised a brow but did it. They all watched Chidori raise his head and look at him.
Shikamaru nodded with a small smile. “Guess we found it. You can decide his sign-name.” He looked to Naruto. “I suggest getting some books on sign language. It’ll help make the process easier and faster.” And give Sasuke something else to do. Perhaps learning and studying like he used to do will give him peace.
Shikamaru taught them the basics of Sign Language, (well what they needed at least), and also helped Sasuke figure out a few things that Chidori will need to know. Those commands would be worked on the next time he came over as he had gotten a text from Temari telling him she needed him back, so they had to wrap up the lesson.
Once Shikamaru left they had lunch, Sasuke giving Chidori his food first. He wasn’t really aware that he was smiling. But Naruto could see it. This was possibly the best first step to recovery.
The rest of the day Sasuke focused on training Chidori. During dinner he signed a few things with Naruto to practice that as well. The blond had responded each time.
Sasuke paused in taking a bite. He noticed a strange look on Naruto’s face. “What?”
Naruto blinked before he chuckled with a soft smile. “You’ve always been so focused on work and learning. It’s nice to see your determination hasn’t changed.”
Sasuke actually blushed, eyes wide. He then quickly became focused on his food.
After dinner they watched a movie as Naruto pointed out they should wind down before sleeping.
-o-
Naruto looked into the room that had become Sasuke’s. The raven was asleep in his bed with Chidori lying next to him, head on his stomach. The dog opened his eyes and looked at Naruto before closing them again without moving. The blond smiled and quietly closed the door. He went to his room and opened his laptop.
With quick fingers he wrote out an email. It stated what he learned in the session, the therapy dog, and the question about a drug causing the inability to speak. He sent it to Tsunade. He decided he’d wait to hear her opinions before looking up possible drugs. She had actual knowledge and all he had was Google. So he shut down his laptop, set it to the side, and laid back. This new way of living and speaking will take a while to adjust to but he’d do anything and everything for Sasuke.
There was so much he wanted to show Sasuke, for him to remember things and people. But he had to do it slowly that much was clear. He couldn’t overwhelm Sasuke or he’d risk going back to the beginning. But they were making amazing progress. “I believe in you Sasuke. Forever.” He closed his eyes and fell into a deep sleep.
Note: Hey everyone. Hope you like this little turn. I’ve always loved sign language (ASL mainly) and I even took a few classes on it. I might start learning it again, if only to help with this story. As for the ESA training and such, my mom actually had a dog that she trained to be a therapy dog for others. Mainly the elderly. He helped me too. He lived to the ripe age of 14. Such a good boy his entire life. I myself have an ESA cat. He helps with my anxiety, ptsd, depression, and my epilepsy. I’ll be describing some of the silent commands I give him as ones that Sasuke can use. Such as the way Kiba made Chidori sit. I will also be using his reactions to some of my episodes as references for Chidori and Sasuke. Animals are amazing.
