Sasuke
Present…
Sasuke had stopped to rest under a large tree about three miles outside of Konoha. Soon he would be passing through the same gates that he passed through only a short three years ago on his trip for personal atonement. This time he will be entering them, not leaving them. He let out a shaky breath as he tried to get a handle on the mix of emotions rising in his chest. He was always so calm and collected in the public eye, but times when he was by himself his self control waivered. Currently he was feeling very unsure of himself. This wasn’t something he had yet gotten use to feeling. Honestly, he wasn’t accustomed to feeling anything, other than the cold hatred that had filled him for the majority of his young life. The fact that he was aware of feeling other emotions flowing through him was only proof of the progress he has made during his time away. It was only a small testimate to his growth, and he wasn’t yet sure if he was prepared to face everything that is awaiting him through those gates.
Sasuke was still unsure if he has yet made enough progress to handle being in the spotlight like Naruto is expecting him to be. Assigning him the role as best man may not be the best decision for the wedding. Just because the village has had a break from seeing the shameful Uchiha around, doesn’t mean they have forgotten about him, or are ready to have him place on a pedestal beside the most respected citizen of the village. Sasuke was not concerned in the least about impressing the village or winning everyone over, that is Naruto's job. Naruto has strived to do just that ever since he could walk. The yellow haired man will forever be the beacon of light and goodness in Konohagakure. Sasuke will be the one who lives in the shadows and works behind the scenes to make sure Naruto remains that beacon. This is what is required of him. No matter what anyone may believe, there is always a need for someone to do the dirty, undesirable jobs that someone as pure as Naruto is not meant to do. So while Naruto continues to be the driving force behind the village, leading and inspiring the following generations to come, Sasuke will work to support Naruto in anyway, no matter what that may require of him.
Sasuke is familiar to the darkness, he has already been touched by the shadows. Where as Naruto has always been a child of the light. Even when everyone else tried to push him to the shadows, it wasn’t in his nature. It still wasn’t. It has been that way since they have been children. Sasuke never understood this main difference between them. He saw it only as a competition between the two. Instead of focusing on his own skills and strengths, and finding out how to best use them alongside Naruto, he only focused on why he couldn’t do the things that blonde idiot could. Being so blinded by his search for self serving vengeance, he could never see that working alongside his golden friend and bringing respect back to the Uchiha name was the vengeance that he was always meant to take. Sasuke knew this now of course, when the past was too late to change. But that would not stop him from following the path Itachi has left for him now. He will work beside Naruto to keep Konoha safe and thriving. While Naruto stands out front in the spotlight, Sasuke will stand back in the shadows. He wanted to ensure that none of these shadows would damper Naruto’s light, and in turn, the village’s light. In time, Konoha will understand the good that Sasuke would do for the sake of the village. Through the help of Naruto, the Uchiha name will once again be among the most respected ones.
Sasuke just wasn’t sure that Naruto involving him in his wedding while things were still settling since the war was the best decision. Naruto doesn’t need to have the Uchiha name hurting his chances of him achieving his dream of being granted the title of Hokage. Knowing how openly the Uzumaki trusted the Uchiha may give the villagers reasons to doubt his judgement. Sasuke couldn’t help but wonder if Sakura knew od Naruto’s intentions of making him best man of their wedding. Sasuke couldn’t help but smirk to himself. He was highly doubtful she was even made aware of his promise to Naruto that he made three years ago. Hopefully the fiery Kunoichi will take it easy on the fool.
Standing up to stretch his legs, Sasuke took a deep breath and took in the familiar air of the woods around him. Grinning, he closed his eyes as brief flashes of playing and training with his older brother came flooding to his mind.
“I hope I am finally making you proud Itachi.” Sasuke said out loud as he watched a raven pass by overhead.
Swiftly, he climbed his way to the top of the tree he was just resting under to scout ahead of him. Looking toward the village he could see the thick forest stretching out below him as far as his eyes could see. It was a nice sight to see that at least this little piece of the world seems to have remained untouched by the destruction of the past war. Sasuke stiffened as he sensed a sudden large burst of unfamiliar chakra speeding towards him. Watching the tops of the trees in front of him ripple from the force of the chakra passing through their branches, Sasuke only has a second to focus his own chakra to secure himself to the branch he was standing on to prepare himself for the wave to wash over him. Activating his sharingan, he tensed up as it hit the tree directly in front of him, but instead of feeling the same impact, the wave seemed to part around him, leaving him completely untouched. Following the blast move past him, he watched it die out about fifty feet behind him.
Using the built up chakra in his feet, he focused on the direction of the mysterious chakra burst and propelled himself towards it. As he closed in on the source, he realized it was about two miles from the far side of the village, closest to his clans old compound. Bristling at this knowledge he instinctively reached for the hilt of his sword at his waist and increased his speed.
It was clear to see where the blast had came from as he closed in, a perfect hundred foot wide circle of nothing but soft dirt came into view. All the trees seemed to have been disintegrated or disappeared completely. There was no debris or any physical evidence that anything had even been growing there. The only thing that came into view was the small form of a dark haired woman. Before making his way over to inspect the body, Sasuke cautiously reached out with his senses to detect any other nearby signs of life. Momentarily shocked by what he found, his eyes focused once again on the motionless form laying in the center of the clearing.
Walking over and crouching down, he gently moved dark indigo hair aside to reveal what had to be the closest thing to the face of angel. The woman’s skin was the color of fine porcelain, which seemed to glow in contrast to the dark indigo of her hair and her long full lashes that rested against her high cheekbones. He could hear her light breathing as it escaped between her full lips as the heavy swells of her chest softly rose up and down. Pushing more of the woman’s long silky hair out away from her neck, a leaf emblem headband was revealed that was tied there. Sasuke tried, without success, to mentally identify who she was. By the looks of her, she was of the age to have been in his class at the academy. Carefully picking up her lithe body with is one arm, he pressed her securing against his chest and started towards the village. Looking down at the sleeping angel, the only thing that he was sure of was that the powerful surge of chakra was of the same signature of the small amount remaining within the woman’s body.
How had she emitted such a large amount of chakra with such precision? Watching as a rabbit ran by in front of them, his mind was reeling. Other than the destruction in that small radius around where he had found her, the remaining wildlife has remained completely onscathed. As Konoha’s walls came into view he recalled the feeling of the chakra wave parting in front of him nearly a mile away from the spot of the initial blast point.
Sasuke knew he had to find out just who this woman was, and how she did what she did.
