Chapter 4
When Naruto returned to consciousness, he blinked a few times until his vision refocused. What he saw in front of him pretty much said he wasn't on the surface anymore. It caused him to question if this could be the place he continued to see in his dreams. A shudder ran down his spine when he recalled the voice he thought he'd heard during the last time he experienced it. The other question on his mind was how he didn't drown. He felt as if this was his home. It felt strange to the blonde. He glanced down, noticing there didn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary. What he hadn't noticed is his skin had hardened. He gained some traits from his mother even though it'll take him a while to realize it. It's why he hasn't drowned. He's able to breathe underwater. He noticed he didn't form a tail or anything. He frowned, hoping his clothes wouldn't become soaked. There didn't seem to be anything to protect his clothing from the damp sea water. Sighing, he chucked them off. He decided to do some handiwork after glancing around before he did this to make sure no one spotted him. He'd be so embarrassed if anyone caught him in this state. He didn't really know why he was able to breathe underwater. He thought he should at feeling something trying to wriggle to the surface of his mind. Eliciting a frustrated huff, he decided to wait until later to figure it out. He needed to discern his current situation first. He began searching around, finding different colored seaweed. Without thinking, he grabbed some gold and black to weave a cloak for himself as well as a makeshift cloth to cover his crotch. When he finished he felt better. He walked around, surprised to see he was so far below the surface. He still felt something around his ankles. Accidentally tripping to fall flat on his face, he grunted at the abrupt spark of pain coursing through him. The ground was covered in mostly sand although there were some shells around. He noticed there were some naturally grown structures created from sea volcano eruptions. The water didn't feel cold to him. Confusion swept over him once he gained a firm sense of his surroundings. Once he did, the hairs on the back of his neck stood on end. The feeling of being watched made his skin crawl.
"Huh, I didn't expect this to happen," muttered Naruto to himself, unnerved by the silence, glancing at every direction he decided to begin walking in a random one in the hopes of finding someone to help him.
He didn't know how long he'd been traveling for. Feeling as if this place was familiar to him, he walked until he approached at the front gates to what looked like a kingdom of merfolk. Wide eyed, he stared in shock. He had no idea the story his mother had told him wasn't just a work of fiction. The blonde wondered if he gained some traits from her. Shrugging, he guessed that's why he hasn't died from drowning yet. Hearing someone swimming towards him, he flinched away. Naruto frowned, seeing the woman from his dreams there. Confused, he waited for her to speak. He recalled this blonde woman had told him there to ask for her.
"You're Kushina's son, right?" asked Ino, giving him a soft smile to ease his apprehension towards her.
Nodding, he replied, "Yeah, that woul be me. I'm Naruto. Are you Ino?"
"Yep," confirmed the mermaid. "Hmm, the king and queen won't be pleased to know there's a human here. Let's get you away from the kingdom first. Maybe the sea witch has something we can use."
"O-Oh, are you sure?" asked Naruto, feeling a little uncertain about it even though Ino did seem trusting enough to him.
"Of course," she scoffed. "Your mother and I were friends when she still lived here. I helpd her and Minato escape. Just keep that between you and me, ok?"
"Alright," agreed Naruto as he followed Ino. "Is it far to her lair?"
"Her 'lair' as you put it isn't too far out from the kingdom," giggling lightly, she shook her head at how the human phrased things. "It's one of the caverns. Now, come on, I don't want us to be spotted."
Without another word, Naruto went silent as they drifted further and further away from the front gates of the merfolk kingdom. He hoped trusting Ino hadn't been a mistake. She seemed geninue towards him. He thought if she and his mother had been friends when she still remained here he could at least put a little faith into her. He doubted she would try to steer him the wrong way. When they arrived after several moments or so of traveling, Ino darted in. She beckoned for Naruto follow. The lighting in the cavern gave an ominous aura. It's hidden beneath a coral reath.
"My, my, what has wandered into my dwelling at this time?" asked a feminine voice who belonged to the sea witch known as Anko.
"It's me, Ino Yamanaka. I came with Kushina's son," answered the bleach blonde haired woman, showing no deceit towards the other female.
"Huh, so she made it out alive then," mused Anko, turning her gaze towards Naruto, causing him to feel a little unnerved by her penetrating gaze. "How is she and your father?"
"They…died," replied Naruto quietly, struggling to push the words out of his throat.
"Tch, that's unfortunate," sighed Anko, seeing Ino flinch at the unpleasant news. "Susanowo would've received their souls."
"Huh?" asked Naruto, confused about what she's talking about.
"He's the sea god, but he holds other roles as well. He can be known as the god of storms. He's also known for being a bit of a trickster," explained Anko. "When one of our folk dies their mate rejoins them in death. Your mother was born and raised in the sea. Your father wasn't, but neither could go on to the next life without the other."
"I didn't know that," admitted Naruto. "Thanks for telling me this. I feel better knowing they've moved on. Are they the reason why I've felt a pull towards this place?"
Anko's lips drew into a frown, deciding to console her crystal, "Yes and no. Your mother did want you to come here, but there's another reason."
"What could that be?" murmured Ino, her curiosity as well as Naruto's perked as they wanted to know what Anko could share with them.
"The one that will become your mate," was all Anko could say in response. "Now, I know Ino came here for a different purpose. Tell me what you want or need. I'll see if I have something for it, but it'll come at a price."
"I need something to make Naruto less human," Ino tried to explain, shooting the blonde male an apologetic look if she had offened him at all.
Anko pursed her lips, pondering the request until she spoke, "Alright, I do have a spell that will increase his merfolk side. This will in a sense turn him into a real merman. I do need to ask, what's your name?"
"Naruto Namikaze Uzumaki," he introduced himself to her.
"Ah, well Naruto are you willing to embrace that side of yourself?" inquired Anko, raising a dark brow, her black hair tied in a loose ponytail, wearing a weaved cloth to cover her bosom while below the waist she has the body of a sea serpent with blakish purple scales. "You may not be abel to return to what you used to be once it's complete."
"Ino, are you sure they won't accept me as a human?" Naruto asked the blonde as he already knew his decision.
"Yes, I'm positive," she responded somberly to him. "After your father escaped with your mother the king and queen forbade anyone falling for a human."
"That's sad," muttered Naruto.
"Indeed," agreed Anko. "I see the determination in your eyes. It seems you know what you'll choose."
"What do you want in return?' asked Naruto, knowing from his mother's story they had to give up something personal or valuable to them.
Anko smiled slightly, "Ino, you have a picture of Kushina and Minato, right?"
"Yeah, what about it?" asked Ino, confused for a moment although then it dawned on her why the witch wanted it. "Oh, I see. I carry it with me."
Anko held out a hand, accepting the picture from her, placing it with the journal she kept on a shelf, "Lie down on this slab. The process will take a while. When it's done you'll be a little disoriented at first, but you'll get used to it once you know how to swim with a tail."
Walking over, he lied down on his back upon the slab she had pointed to, "Will it hurt?"
"Minato was the first one I used this on. The rest found out eventualy he wasn't one of them, but I've been able to strengthen it to ensure that doesn't happen again," reassured Anko, preparing things in order to begin her spell. "Close your eyes. You'll be out for a while. When you wake..…..your life won't be the same anymore."
