The early morning sunshine woke Gaara gently, as it always did. Stepping out on his private balcony, his eyes were greeted with a remarkable site. There in the middle of his courtyard was one Haruno Sakura performing a set of Tai Chi exercises. She wore only a red sports bra and a pair of black athletic shorts. Her luscious pink hair was drawn up in a high pony tail. Her lithe body made even the difficult movements look easy as a testament to her strength and flexibility. Her gracious, athletic movements were high art; almost a dance. She was literally breathtaking. He didn’t realize he was staring until she emerged from her meditation and caught his eyes.
Sakura glanced at the Kazekage. How long had he been watching her? “Good morning Gaara”
“Good morning” He replied curtly, a blush spreading across his features. Gaara quickly stepped back into his room. He needed to be more cautious with his attentions. Her beauty and unwitting charm drew him like a moth to the flame. He stepped into a cold shower to prepare for the day.
…
Sakura’s Monday was packed. Her morning exercise and meditation had prepared her mind and body for the rigors ahead, so she was grateful she’d set her alarm early. The day itself had gone rather well. There were some bumps and hitches, but these things were to be expected implementing such major changes. She’d also gotten to know all of her new students better. The 6 chunin and 12 genin had a lot to learn, but at least the journey had begun. By the time she got back to the kazekage’s residence, dinner had been over for some time, so she headed to the kitchen to see if she could find some leftovers or something.
She was surprised to see Jiro in the kitchen, but he greeted her warmly before she could disappear, “Ah, Sakura, you missed supper. What can I do for you?”
Sakura was embarrassed. “Oh, please don’t do something just for me. I only came to find some leftovers or make a cup of ramen or something. I don’t want to be a bother.”
Jiro waved dismissively, “It’s no bother at all, miss. Besides, as it is the Kazekage worked through dinner himself. I’m just making sandwiches and tea for him. Now what would you like?”
Sakura sighed, “Well, if you’re sure it’s not trouble, sandwiches and tea would be good.”
Jiro smiled, “Excellent! And if it makes you feel better, you can carry the tray up to the Kazekage’s room for me.”
Sakura smiled in return, “It would be my pleasure to assist you, sir.”
The plump older man chatted with the pink haired kunoichi as he swiftly prepared the light meal and tea. His friendly demeanor reminded her of a dear uncle; the kind who you could talk with about anything. He handed her the tray and she thanked him for his kindness. Then she set off to Gaara’s room.
Gaara answered the knock at his door expecting to see Jiro, “Jiro, thank –“ he stopped suddenly as he noticed it was Sakura holding the tray.
Sakura was slightly embarrassed and awkward, “Umm. I worked through dinner and… well, anyway, Jiro asked me to bring this up and said I should just sit down with you for a bite.” She bit her lower lip nervously. Why was she nervous? It was just Gaara.
Gaara recomposed himself quickly, “Sakura, of course, please come in.” He took the tray from her and led her onto the balcony. “It’s nice and cool here in the evenings. I like to look at the garden.” It took all the energy he had left to keep up the calm façade. He’d had a very long day, including a grueling meeting with his council. Kami, he’d rather battle the Akatsuki again then meet with his council. They were such a bunch of old, stubborn ninnies. And now, just when he’d started to relax, now here was the enchanting kunoichi bringing tea and sandwiches. Everything about her was so attractive; she was a deadly shinobi in battle, a brilliant medic, a leader, beautiful – even exotic – hair and eyes, and a rock hard sexy body too. And she was nice. So damn nice to him. Except when she called him on his crap, an audacity few living humans possessed. And she was in his private quarters. Alone with him.
Sakura sat down at the small table on the veranda and poured each of them a cup of tea. She did her best to calm herself but something about Gaara got under her skin and was… was… fascinating. He was a good-looking man, but what really piqued her interest was the way he spoke with such authority. She couldn’t entirely say why, but she found that compelling. She took a deep breath and managed to find her voice, “It is a lovely view. I think it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve seen all day.” She mused as she sipped her tea.
Gaara looked directly at Sakura, “I couldn’t agree more.” Then he sighed and turned his attention quickly to his meal.
They enjoyed a leisurely conversation about the day’s events – the hospital, the classes, the meetings, some minor mission reports – as they ate and sipped tea. The conversation wandered to their interactions with Naruto and his great love of ramen. Eventually the tea pot was empty, and Sakura looked at her watch. “Oh my, it’s gotten really late. Gaara, I’m sorry I didn’t mean to keep you up.” She stood and pushed in her chair.
As Sakura turned towards the door, Gaara took hold of her wrist to pull her attention back to him. “No apology is necessary, Sakura. I’ve enjoyed your company.”
Sakura stood looking into the kazekage’s turquoise eyes with her own deep green orbs for a moment longer and smiled up at him, “Thank you. I appreciate your hospitality, Gaara… but morning is on the way and I’m sure we should both get some sleep.”
“Of course.” He replied stepping around the table. He still held her wrist lightly in his hand. Her skin was so soft and warm; her hair nearly iridescent in the moonlight. He sighed and released her, motioning towards the door. “Goodnight then. Sleep well, Sakura.”
“Goodnight to you too, Gaara.” And she was out the door. Gaara closed his eyes to imprint her memory in his mind – her smiling face, the pink hair shining in the soft desert moonlight, the scent of something slightly floral remaining on his fingers where he’d touched her, the kindness of her words. This woman was trouble. He knew it, but he couldn’t help himself.
Sakura nearly ran back to her room. He touched her. Gaara had held her by the wrist, even if it was just a moment. The feel of his strong, masculine hand on her and that authoritative voice of his. Her heart was beating fast and her blood pressure was slightly elevated and… She was aroused! Oh Kami, what was this? She was NOT supposed to be aroused by the Kazekage. She took a cold shower and went to bed.
…
Sakura walked to the training grounds with Temari. Sparring would be good; she couldn’t wait to throw a few kicks and punches. Kankuro and Gaara were there ahead of them.
“Temari, why is Sakura here?” Kankuro asked quizzically. Gaara was thankful he didn’t have to ask himself.
“She needs to train too, nitwit.” She smacked the puppeteer on the head for emphasis. “Did you think she’d be here for six months and not train? Or are you just scared she’ll beat the crap out of you?”
Kankuro stammered, “Well, no, of course not… and hey, I just don’t want Sakura to get hurt. We play pretty rough, you know.”
Sakura piped up, “I spar with Naruto and Kakashi back home. I think I can handle you just fine Kankuro.”
Gaara knew he’d have to weigh in, “Temari is correct, so today Sakura and Temari can spar and Kankuro and I will spar. Thursday the winners spar each other, and the losers spar each other.” He knew this sounded only fair and he presumed than would mean Temari was her partner today and Kankuro on Thursday. That way he could avoid close contact with the attractive kunoichi. “And remember it’s Tai Jutsu only this week.” They all nodded in ascent. “Very well then, let’s begin.”
Sakura turned to Temari. In an instant the two kunoichi were a blur of kicks, punches, and blocks. Their tai jutsu was nearly a dance. It was filled with back flips, twists, jumps and dives. They went on full blast for several minutes. Gaara had defeated Kankuro and the two stood and watched the kunoichi pair. Temari and Sakura were clearly closely matched. Sakura was doing much better than either of the men expected, but neither would say anything. They’d been sparring over fifteen minutes when Sakura finally landed a decisive punch to Temari’s face, dislocating her jaw and sending the blonde shinobi onto the ground. Sakura was on top of her in a split-second, using the advantage of her opponent’s pain to pin her down. Temari yielded and the two women stood, panting and covered in dust and sweat. They shook hands, Temari holding her jaw.
“Temari” Sakura spoke between heavy breaths, “Sorry about that, I’ll fix it.” She motioned her friend and sparring partner over. In a quick maneuver, she reset her jaw and applied healing chakra to alleviate the pain and swelling. “You might want some ice later.”
Temari nodded, then looked to her brothers, “How’d you two do?” she asked politely.
Kankuro just harrumphed. “Gaara won. Big surprise there.” He added dripping sarcasm. “So sis, Thursday you and me and Gaara gets to take a crack at Tsunade’s apprentice, eh?” They all nodded. “Well, lets get some target practice in since we still have a few minutes.”
As they threw kunai at the targets, a dread of Thursday came over the former jinchuriki. She hasn’t even been here a week and I’m already having such difficulty, he thought to himself as he buried another set of kunai into his target. How many cold showers can one man take?
