It took a long time for Shino to notice that the blizzard had completed its pass. Pristine threads of snow-white sunlight offered some solace to the academy teacher. He didn't move though...he sat...deeply calculating how he should move forward from this point. His concentration did not divert until Hachi began to rouse. Slowly, he aided the woman in sitting up. They sat there for a moment while Shino brushed away her tangled hair, checking her head for anymore distress.
"I'm sorry." Hachi murmured.
"You did as you thought best." he admitted, not quite convinced he had to reciprocate an apology. "We must leave, because it is no longer safe to linger here."
Already dressed for travel, Shino silently helped Hachi ready herself for the journey home, since her arms were still bandaged and healing. With some expedience, he nursed her exhaustion and held the canteen steady as she drank. As quickly as she could without getting sick, Hachi ate a protein bar Shino broke into pieces and fed her. Tension riddled the air and neither said a word as Shino hoisted the kunoichi up on his back and the two departed.
For some reason, the recollection his symbionts gave of the interrogation grew a new angle in Shino's mind and it nagged him to not have the question satisfied. "You didn't have sex with our target."
He could feel Hachi's body jerk lightly with some surprise. She quickly settled though, realizing the parasites may have enlightened him. "No, I didn't. We were pressed for time."
"We most certainly were..." Shino agreed, "but...you weren't planning to engage in fornication regardless of our timetable, were you?"
"...No. I wasn't." she grew wary.
He paused before continuing, "Why?"
"Genjutsu's simpler." the kunoichi's voice quieted, as if dodging something.
"No. Actually, it's not simpler." Shino countered as he trudged them both through the snow, "Because genjutsu requires much greater chakra and concentration...and the risk is far greater if the target is able to see past the illusion. Genjutsu arts are not required to be a proficient seductress, yet you still mastered the style. Actual sexual interaction is not your main tool, but you in fact use it as a last resort, do you not?"
Hachi sighed, Shino took it as a sign that he was right. "I'm sure you've heard this before, but you're too damn smart for your own good."
The Aburame smirked inwardly, "You are correct: I have heard it many times. Don't worry though...your trade secrets are safe with me." he promised in his deadpan tone.
He felt a quick huff of hot breath on his shoulder as she chuckled quietly. The colony spoke among themselves of the entertaining interaction and began to egg on their host again. And as before, he indulged them not; pointing out that as tempting as the idea was, the Konoha natives were still pressed for time and even though Earth country was an ally, the yakuza backlash meant they were still behind enemy lines.
"We'll need to stop in the Zekkyō Yama valley and let Miko know her cover's blown." Hachi commented as if intercepting his thoughts.
"Very well." he nodded.
"...Borrachero." Hachi mumbled against her teammate's back, relishing in the feel of his tied hair brushing against her head. "...That's the name of tree. It thrives in tropical conditions...pollinating moths love it...Placidula euryanassa larva eats some species for defense mechanisms."
His train of converse with the kikaichū was lost on him now; it had him a bit taken aback. The man felt the kunoichi nuzzle her cold face against the back of his neck. Anyone listening would find the statement innocuous, if not random; Shino though, knew these facts were laced with growing trust. With all the words he wished to speak, the insect-user could not construct the best way to express them...so he nodded, but said nothing and trekked them southeast over the frosted mountains.
It didn't take long, with Shino's speed through the forest, for the two shinobi to find the mountain-caged valley swallowed in low clouds. As the Aburame man slowed his pace to walk normally, the duo's approach down the winding road was greeted with the shrieking of apes boasting their claim on this turf. Watching dark flashes of primates darting in the white trees and deafening the murky air, Shino found it easy to understand how the mountain valley earned such a foreboding name. This is where Miko was having her 'surgery'; at the clinic of a locally-lauded doctor.
Taking advantage of the shrouded scenery, the kikaichū wielder let his kunoichi teammate dismount and helped her change out of his trench coat for her own clothing; he once again garbed himself in his red-beetle studded coat. Their screening at the village gates was rather kindly, once the guards realized that Hachi and Shino were two of the three Miko had vetted upon her arrival. Shino then took the following and let Hachi stroll them through the main drag she appeared to find familiar. Mist of the low-lying clouds obscured most everything at a distance, but the seductress quickly recognized the familiar face she sought, smoking outside of a home lodging.
Hachi politely greeted Miko's boarder with a gift and soon the two women spoke in length about the hazardous turn-out, while Shino remained silent. The smoker took a great huff off her cigarette, but didn't seem at all tense or offended by the news. None of the host family that lingered seemed fazed either; the isolated valley-dwellers seemed little concerned with affairs outside of their world. Miko quickly finished her nicotine break and ushered the shinobi to a restaurant of her choosing.
Shino pondered with his insects over their informant's generous behaviour, given the circumstances. Miko had ordered them a rather expensive oden and sake; the hot pot steamed with the biggest assortment of fish cakes, kinchaku, cabbage rolls, eggs, gyu-suji, and konjak. The older woman made no odd gestures to the staff, though, and ate first without hesitance. The Aburame man tested a bite of daikon, only to hear his insects encourage that their meal was not poisoned. Hachi seemed unconcerned as well, so the dark-haired man relented his suspicions and took turns feeding himself and the kunoichi.
"No worries," Miko assured, refilling her bowl, "I hated that city anyway. Too many yuppies hogging-up the hot springs. You know, I haven't gotten a single bath house trip in my eight years there because they always keep the shit reserved for tourists."
Hachi was keeping up her act, but in a much more relaxed manner. "No shit...they don't have a place for locals?" the blue-eyed woman then took a bite of the kinchaku Shino held up for her.
The academy teacher noticed their informant eyeing him again as she replied, but not negatively so, "One. It's a tiny mom n' pop place. Nice couple, but the line always goes out the door when they're open. I'm getting too old for snitchin'. Think your Kage's in a giving mood?"
Hachi quickly chewed her bite to answer timely. "I don't think relocating you's gonna be an issue, Miko. You've always been solid."
"'Cause you always make good on a deal. Not a lot make a pit stop when they're runnin' to let me know shit hit the fan. I appreciate it, sweetie." Miko smirked.
The dark-eyed woman studiously watched Shino finish his bite before holding Hachi's sake cup to the kunoichi's lips. Hachi sighed without making a face as the warm rice wine coated her throat, "It's the least we can do...just lay low and I'll line something up before the week is out."
Miko then curiously pointed her chopsticks back and forth to the shinobi, "Are you two fucking?" she blurted out a little louder than necessary.
Shino nearly choked on his cabbage roll and kept his disposition calm while the kikaichū chittered with great mirth. "We have not yet pursued supplementing our bonds with coital activities." he tried clearing up the misconception.
"'Not yet?!' What in the fresh hell, you two, really?!" Hachi sat bug-eyed at the cheeky comments around her.
Shino looked over regarding his captain. "Did I say something incorrect?"
Miko then grinned wickedly, "Yeah Hachi, is he fibbin'?"
"NO. HE IS NOT WRONG. WE ARE NOT FUCKING." she firmly shook her head before she realized their waitress was standing by the table, looking rather shocked.
"We're fine, hun." Miko waved away the waitress with a smile. "Why not? You'd never catch me passing up a guy that'll feed me!" she giggled and began probing the Aburame man, "Wait, are you gay? My cousin's single if you're lookin'."
"I am heterosexual. Thank you for the offer, though." Shino disclosed flatly.
Hachi immediately raised her heavily bandaged appendages, "Miko. Arms."
Miko raised her arms mockingly. "Yes, I see. I have those too." she laughed.
Shino threw in his translation, "I believe she is trying to convey the reason why I am feeding her; because she cannot utilize her hands and not because of sexual motivations."
"Thank you!" Hachi exalted before the man motioned another skewer of fish balls toward her mouth. Hachi quirked an eyebrow at his poor timing. "...That is not helping our case right now."
"Doesn't matter!" Miko smirked and went back to drinking, "This is very keeper-like behaviour, you two should try each other out."
"Oh, bite me." Hachi spat back at the informant.
"No, you should let him do that." she cackled.

Hotels, Shino found, were deemed unnecessary in this village. One paid or worked for boarding with locals willing to host. Running short on the mission's budget, he volunteered his time to a widow on the outskirts of the valley. The elderly woman was remarkably robust though, only requiring a pile of fire wood from the insect-user, and Shino more than willingly obliged. While their hostess showed Hachi into the cabin, the visor-obscured Aburame commissioned his beetles to cut down some good burning trees.
One by one, the destruction insects swarmed and ate through the trunks of four tall trees. Shino stood, ax rested on his shoulder; he oversaw the operation and articulated to his colony how to divide the trunks. Satisfied with the tenths, the academy sensei called back his ward, set his coat aside, and bandaged his palms. The sharp cracks of metal hitting wood echoed through the small farm and neighboring forest with every split Shino dealt to quarter the logs. In his net-sleeved spandex shirt, the extremes of biting, iced-fog and the heat rolling off his back seemed to thrill him in the release of the work.
He could have easily finished the chore in a fraction of the time if he left the labour to the symbionts, and they made him aware of this as they hummed inside, warming his scarcely-covered chest against the chill. He thanked, but declined their eagerness. The 31-year-old needed this...he needed to vent this anger that he had been hiding away. He panted visible, steamy breaths as the sweat dripped from him.
Six wheel barrow fulls later, the insect-user stacked the last of the firewood by the widow's thatch-roof house and loosed the bandages from his calloused hands; he suddenly realized how late it was as the dark gray blanketed most everything. Pulse throbbing in his head, he barely heard Hachi's footsteps across the stone patio. The kunoichi stood before him, a towel draped over bandaged arm.
"Looks like you had fun." she smiled brightly up at him. "How are you feeling?"
The Aburame man paused before accepting the warm towel. "I feel better." he hesitated...not often did anyone ask him of how he 'felt' and it made him consider how he should answer. "How are you feeling?"
The kunoichi teacher laughed, "Useless, but I seem to be helping enough by keeping our hostess company."
He wiped himself dry before the cold set in and nodded an affirmative to her words. Sitting on the patio beside her legs, Shino kicked off his sandals and moved to walk inside with his teammate. Closing the door behind them, the parasite host saw a cast iron pot left at the table. The absence of their boarder did not go unnoticed and Shino made for the sink to wash up.
"Ueda-san turns in early. She wanted me to give you her apologies, but she made some hōtō if your hungry." Hachi updated as she looked out of the frosted window, hearing primal shrieks in the distance.
Carefully, the brunette woman fumbled to open a cabinet and brace the sides of a bowl between her bandage-imprisoned hands. Shino dried his hands and watched her from the corner of his visor. She tediously set the bowl out for him with some chopsticks in the same manner. The Aburame man then felt the urge to move toward the woman. Steps silent, he focused his sight down on her strong shoulders as it seemed to take an eternity to approach her.
"I hope you don't mind, I've already―" she cut herself short when Hachi turned to see the black fabric clinging to her teammate's chin. Shino had stopped barely a quarter-meter from her.
Blinking, Hachi had to recollect what she was trying to say, "I um...I already ate with Ueda-san...so I was...I need to check what supplies we have left." she nodded and accidentally backed into the table.
"Very well." Shino murmured flatly...with a hint of something raw in his voice.
This had elicited a rose upon the female's cheeks. The static in the silence soon had Hachi prying herself away to make for their room upstairs. Watching her dodge his proximity, the Aburame man's head shot back down sharply. Looking at the cast iron pot, Shino heard the colony urge him to eat. He heeded them for the time being; shaking away his wants for logic and sat down to meal prepared.
*
Hachi counted the MREs she had already checked earlier. They had enough to last them until they made it home...and Shino knew it. He had finished eating ten minutes ago, and watched her from the shadow of the door frame.
"How long are you going to hide over there, Shino?" Hachi mumbled.
"How long will you keep counting the same supplies with which we left?" he countered.
Hachi looked at him then, "Fair enough." she sighed.
"...Stand up." Shino instructed.
Hachi quirked an eyebrow at this, but played along. He watched her rise without her arms rather gracefully...if she wasn't trained in geisha skill, she could certainly fool him. Walking over, he stopped at the same distance they were downstairs.
"Lift your arms." his next direction.
"Care to tell me why?" she quizzed while obliging.
Gently, Shino's hands came to brush up the edge of the woman's spare jōnin shirt before she jerked back.
He advanced where she retreated and kept his composure, "If you'd prefer to go a third day without bathing, that is your prerogative. I do not wish to wait any longer."
"Oh..."
Shino threw out the proposition again. "Do you wish to bathe tonight?"
Hachi's eyes darted from his visor to the washroom door. "Well...yes...that would be nice, but you d―"
"I don't mind. Lift your arms, please." he liltlessly interrupted.
Gulping, the kunoichi lifted her arms again, but this time Shino went behind her, lifted her shirt over her head. Then off came her tube top bra. Eyes half-lidded, Hachi lowered her arms and listened behind her to the Aburame man peel off his own shirt. With great care, Shino disrobed the kunoichi of her pants, and to none of his surprise, there was no underwear to shed; missions were hard enough without the worry of such things. Hachi quietly stepped out of her garments before Shino's deft fingers untied her hair and hitai-ate.
He guided the kunoichi then by her shoulder to the small washroom. The blue-eyed woman stood detached and Shino noticed; he wondered for a moment if she was back to business...preparing for something to happen. The theory hurt to dwell on, so he discarded it and went to fill the wash basin with hot water and soap. Moving to stand in front of the kunoichi, Hachi's dulled eyes seemed to liven with some surprise at the fact that he was still wearing pants.
Watching her gaze soften slightly, Shino read and understood. He motioned for her to rest her arms on top of her head and the insect-user squatted to the basin, soaking the cloth. Hachi stared at the visor hiding Shino's eyes, then glancing at the marks adorning his muscular chest from past battles, only closing her gaze when he reached up to wash her face...her neck...upper arms...collarbones. Hachi's breathing kept steady and the dark-haired chūnin lingered only briefly at her petite, B-cup breasts, admiring them...admiring her in general. Scrubbing lightly across the details of her muscles, her scars, her bare...inguen...and legs?
As if she sensed his puzzlement, Hachi explained. "I wax. Less fuss."
"Hn. Prudent." he commented.
Soaking the cloth again, Shino wasted little time pressing her inner thigh to part. The kunoichi moved as instructed; her Aburame compatriot took silent amusement to see the sheen of moisture already present between the woman's legs. He inhaled and caught a hint of the arousal, and it did not take long for the colony to recognize that scent with him. Amidst their vibrant candor, their shinobi host took to the same ministrations as before, but with great detail. Making the woman under his care jump when he scrubbed her clit carefully.
He watched the down of her skin on her torso raise at the sensation of his cooling exhale. Shino began to notice a slight fidgeting from the otherwise practiced female to whom he'd charged himself. With great interest, he was noticing that the small of her back to be a particularly sensitive area for the blue-eyed seductress. As he finished up, Shino scooted the basin back behind the stool behind them.
"Sit." he ordered in a rather deep, hushed tone.
She did so, observing as the insect master dried her upper arms enough so they wouldn't drip on her bandages. She leaned over then, letting the man quickly wash her lengthy hair. What washing had only took twenty minutes may as well have felt an hour or more for the two. Shino dressed her and lightly brushed her hair before taking his turn to bathe. He was sure the kunoichi sensei saw the tightening in his pants...the colony seemed to hope that was the case. Shino could probably call himself daft if he didn't admit his hope that she enjoyed the exchange, regardless of how much logic he tried to use to sober it down.
As he scrubbed quickly and washed his own hair, the chorus of territorial screams rang out again as if right beside the house. The frequency actually had a glass vase ringing with the reverberations, to which he saw on his exit of the washroom. As if trained for years, Hachi politely closed her eyes, unable to roll away from the shinobi when he turned off the bedroom light. Taking the cue, Shino took relief to remove his heavy head gear, and descended to the empty futon parallel his team captain's. Howls and shrieks permeated the walls and minds of the two foreigners.
"Shino..." Hachi spoke a little louder than one normally would to compete the wildlife nearby.
"Yes?" his volume compensated in kind.
She paused, "...Back at the restaurant...you said 'not yet.'"
"I did."
"Do you intend to try one day?" she posed the loaded question.
He replied most dully, "I find it a possibility, if your consent is granted."
A long pause stretched on and Shino suddenly found himself with an itch that needed scratching. "Would it be something you'd find interest in one day?" his shadow-hidden eyes glanced over to the kunoichi respectfully refusing to look at him.
"It's a strong possibility." Hachi smirked with the frank reply.
Shino nodded and closed his eyes. The two lay unspoken while the terrifying cries outside echoed on. Only when the primates settled down did sleep seem possible.
*
By the time they reached their home turf, Hachi had recovered enough to travel without aid and easily kept pace with her Aburame teammate. Kotetsu's squad had met the duo a distance from the main gate. Clearly, the guards had no idea when to expect their return, if at all. Disclosing the mission results to Naruto was a rather brief affair: Eiji already delivered the proof they needed, and news of Tekkō's corpse washing-up on the river delta reached Konoha's ears before the the two teachers'. The Hokage really only seemed interested in how the operation was 'botched,' according to Eiji's report.
Hearing it from Hachi and Shino's reasoning, Naruto redacted the negative report and concluded the mission a success; writing-off the delay due to 'immediate defensive response' and 'acute care services.' The two shinobi had a silent understanding that the surrogacy need not be mentioned during their debriefing and Hachi negotiated the escort for Miko to Sunagakure. Dismissed, the senseis plodded through the halls of the Hokage tower. It didn't take long for their third teammate to meet them in their silent course. As the blonde man eyed-over the mildly disheveled pair, his face didn't exactly read of a happy disposition.
"Welcome back...couldn't take the time to let me know you were alive?" he huffed.
Shino already found Eiji's trustworthiness of dubious standing. His patience with the chūnin was wearing thin at this point, and the colony with him bristled in response.
"Reporting to Hokage-sama comes first. No exceptions." Hachi blocked with no emotional expression, but then lightened into a tired smile. "I'm glad to see your home safe."
She was too exhausted to play into Eiji's bickering; it was painted all over her face, soon after expressing her relief, and she began to move along.
"Eh, I'm not done talkin' to you! What's with the bandages, Ha-chan?" The brown-eyed man jerked her by her wrapped forearm, causing her to visibly clench in pain.
As soon as Eiji's hand touched the gauze, Shino had a death grip on the man's wrist.
"Remove your hand." the insect-user warned in a rather dangerous tone.
The exchange had a pair of jōnin halting their stride, ready to pull rank on the situation. Hachi lurched her hand out of her teammate's grasp and the Aburame immediately released, but not breaking his hidden stare-down with Eiji. The blonde scanned the faces in the hallway and shot another glare Shino's way before leaving in a huff. In his wake, Shino noticed the rather carefully distanced flight of an insect following the Petenshi man. The kikaichū master's attention was divided though, when one of the jōnin turned his sight back to the woman in the middle of the mess.
"You alright, Tame-san?" he questioned, recognizing his female junior.
Hachi shrugged off the pain and nodded the affirmative.
The jōnin returned the nod, "Tell your man to keep it outside the tower. We don't have time for that bullshit." the man warned as he continued on with his companion.
"Sir." the kunoichi acknowledged respectfully.
With their leave, Hachi loosened her stance into a slight slouch and sighed. "Thanks...Shino." she glanced her tired eyes up at his eyewear before proceeding to the hospital.
The air grew pregnant with pause as he followed the woman. "Your promise blinds you to his demerit."
"Yeah, probably...funny how caring about someone can do that to you." Hachi replied halfheartedly with her tired focus forward and walked on ahead.
"Your reasons are bound to obligation though, because you care about keeping him safe. You do not care so much for his poor character. You must realize that letting it slide is not keeping him safe, because it only enables him." he elaborated flatly.
"Yes...Shino, I am aware of that..." Hachi frowned. As used to her fellow teacher's detail-fixation as she had become, the kunoichi had to muster some patience and not upset him with her sometimes tactless wording.
Slowly they rounded their way into the infirmary. "...but spending so much of your life with a person that just won't see any wrong in what they do, there comes a time when letting it slide has nothing to do with being protective..." she watched as Shino filled out both of their intake forms and continued, "...you just give up on trying."
Shino said nothing further as he laid down the pen and analyzed Hachi's perspective of the situation. He just did catch a twinge of hurt rise in her features. Although quickly examined and discharged, he didn't take his leave until the medics cleared Hachi for outpatient care. He saw again, to his surprise, that an insect took a perch outside of the examination room. It was a female kikaichū, not his own...and he was soon deducing that Eiji's stalking insect was one as well. Upon his approach, Shino saw the female duck into a crack in the tiled floor below, escaping his reach.
The dark-haired sensei felt a surge of worry rip through himself. Hachi was seen on the clan's turf, she performed a jutsu forbidden to non-Aburame. The presence of a female tracker in her and Eiji's vicinity translated to nothing encouraging when he summed things up, but how anyone knew had him stressing to find connections. He walked with no haste, but much purpose, to find his father before action was taken against the kunoichi.

Shibi busied himself with feeding an assortment of specimens in the entomology wing of the main house. One of his beetles flew in, landing on his earlobe, and informed him that Shino was searching the massive shinden-zukuri for him. Shibi ordered the kikaichū to go fetch his son and waited quietly for their arrival. Several minutes later, the insect returned and quiet footsteps stopped just outside of the door.
"Outosan." Shino announced his presence flatly.
"You've been looking for me." he acknowledged the man behind him and motioned his son to enter. "Come, sit."
Shino took his place at the study desk and searched himself for any way to build a defense for his kunoichi friend.
'...My friend.' he repeated mentally. His first time affixing Hachi with this endearment weighed heavily on him as he knew the repercussions would be likely be harsh for her.
"You're troubled." Shibi observed.
Reluctance crept into Shino's person; he was displeased in how easily his father read him. "...Yes. One of our ninjutsu...has been compromised."
"The Tamechia girl..." The Aburame elder finished.
Shino's hand balled into a fist...they already knew.
Shibi took his son's silence as confirmation and continued feeding the insects. "Did she summon the jutsu?"
"Yes: the reason is because, according to the kikaichū, I had died temporarily from depleted chakra. When I was revived, she fed my insects to by me time."
"And you seem to have recuperated well. Did she survive?"
"...Yes."
"Given this account, it is a great relief to see you've returned alive. Tatsuma had already made the main house aware of her intentions. However, no permission was granted him to teach her. It seems his time in Root still holds great influence over his judgment." the graying Aburame informed his only child.
Shino's head slowly rose. "Tatsuma..." he parroted.
That's right...he saw the former Root-nin see Hachi out of the compound. How did he forget something so key? She may not have realized she'd stolen anything...but if Tatsuma abetted her possession of the scroll. Why did he do it, though? Shino's stress sent his mind racing, but he couldn't let it divert his reason for coming.
"Tou-san...I wish to plead for her amnesty." Shino announced flatly.
Shibi refilled the nectar feeder for the moths. "I doubt that will be necessary." he assured, and turned to face his son.
"Respectfully, I believe it is, that is because her intention was to protect. Nothing malicious has befallen the scroll." Shino fought to show no urgency in his testimony.
A strong hand rested on the academy teacher's shoulder "Shino, had the action not been necessary or if Tamechia-san had let you die, this outcome might be very different; but she sealed the contract and became your surrogate. Even if she knowingly disobeyed the main house, by saving your life and your colony, she's pledged a blood-oath that will greatly fall in her favor. Your worry is not necessary." Shibi's voice sounded detached, but the comfort was there. Shino could sense it.
"Then why have females been dispatched to follow her and her teammate?" Shino questioned.
Shibi removed his contact with the man before him. "I do not know. I've not been consulted of any order for their surveillance."
Shino had a thought cross his mind. "...Where is Tatsuma?"
"He hasn't been seen for four days. Some speculate he may be tied-up in his cold case, but...given these developments, he will likely have to be found and dealt with." Shibi confessed. "I will vouch for your surrogate. In the meantime, you must give yourself some space. Clear your mind and rest, segare."
Shino gave a single nod and rose to leave. "Thank you, Tou-san." bowing respectfully.
