Chapter 5. Halo
It would be a full year before he moved her again. They left in the dead of night not leaving a trace behind, the apartment looked as it had the day she arrived. They traveled towards the rain village with the intent of placing her in one of the surrounding towns. Itachi figured they wouldn't search too close to the home base considering that no jinchuriki would want to chance it.
She kept a low profile, never leaving the house, Itachi would bring her all the supplies she needed. He had taken to checking on her every few weeks. The situation was taking it toll on him, she could see the tension building and she did what she could to help him relieve it. The Akatsuki had now successfully captured six of the tailed beasts, the only ones that remained were the two, eight and nine tails.
She was in bed attempting to get some sleep but she felt restless, Fukushin had returned earlier in the day with a message from Itachi stating he would be there in the morning. He had been keeping Fukushin busy lately, she hardly got to see the bird anymore, sending messages back and forth to an unknown source. He hadn't said who and she trusted him enough not to ask. He would not keep it from her if it was important.
She heard a noise outside, at first she thought he had arrived early, but she crept to the window to take a look regardless, she refused to let her guard down. There were shadows moving about outside, more than one person, so she knew it wasn't him. Quietly arming herself she concentrated her chakra in her feet and silently scaled the wall to get to the ceiling, waiting to see if they would make a move on the house or if they just happened to be passing by.
They were surrounding the house, she grew nervous, there were at least five of them, she couldn't take them all on her own if they were trained, not without the help of Matatabi. She didn't dare count on him though, it would attract too much attention. They burst through the door and windows, they lacked the trademark Akatsuki cloaks but that didn't mean they didn't work for them. She was outnumbered and ill prepared in comparison, but she would hold on as long as she could. She used a substitution jutsu but it didn't work, she tried to escape but they grabbed her and threw her against the wall, smacking her head on the stone windowsill.
He was close enough to hear the scuffle coming from Kira's location, he rushed to her, entering through the broken door, he found her pinned against the wall surrounded by a group of rogue ninja, one had an arm pressed tightly against her windpipe, preventing her from screaming or drawing air.
She couldn't breath, her lungs burned, she felt Matatabi's attempt to rise to the surface, her right eye shifting to yellow, her chakra lashed out singeing the man who was choking her but the pressure remained firm despite his obvious discomfort. Itachi had killed two of the men and was working on a third. They may have been above her level of training but they were no match for his prowess.
She barely registered it when the pressure vanished from her throat, she focused on the altercation taking place before her as she tried to draw breath into her burning lungs. The final man froze, trapped in Itachi's inescapable genjutsu. She was still cowered against the wall when he approached her, fear evident on her face.
He knelt beside her, "Kira breathe," she had been deprived of air for too long, she blacked out. When he established she was okay other than the large lump forming on the back of her head, he quickly packed her bag before heaving her up on to his back and leaving the house. The fight would not have gone unnoticed, they had to leave immediately.
When she came to she found herself laying in a clearing, surrounded by trees, close to a fire. Her eyes darted around quickly trying to determine if there was a threat. Itachi watched her from a few feet away, he wanted to comfort her but didn't want to startle her. She had never seen him in battle before, he had told her what he was capable of, but it wasn't the same as seeing it first hand. Would she turn her back on him now that she had witnessed it. The very thought caused his heart to clench, the fear on her face reminded him so much of Sasuke's on that night long ago.
He didn't even notice when she crawled over to him. "'Tachi?" She slipped into his lap, wrapping her arms around his neck and buried her face in his cloak. Slowly he brought his arms up to cradle her.
He closed his eyes tightly, held her like she was the only thing keeping him together, and she was. She pulled back, looking at him until he met her gaze. Even now her eyes showed no fear of him, only trust. "You see what I am capable of, why don't you fear me?" He had to know.
"Because I trust you, I will always trust you, if you wanted to hurt me you could have done it long ago."
"You shouldn't, I always hurt those who trust me."
She knew he was referring to his brother, "Itachi, listen to me, you did what you had to do, you didn't have a choice."
"Yes I did."
"And what would have happened if you hadn't done it?" She didn't wait for him to answer, "they were beyond saving, it was the only way. You can't carry this burden alone, let me help you."
Itachi dropped his head onto her shoulder, "no one can help me."
She held him, she didn't know what else to do but that. He had always been there for her, and now she wanted to be there for him. Even if he wouldn't talk about it, and she knew he wouldn't, she hoped her presence would be enough. His lips desperately searched out her own, pulling her closer melding her small frame to his.
Many times over the years he had tried to convince himself that she would be better off without him, but he couldn't force himself to leave her for long. In the beginning watching from the shadows, not realizing how she had wormed her way into his heart until it was too late. At first her eagerness to learn had reminded him of Sasuke, then when he had seen had seen his brother again he saw the differences in them. Sasuke had chosen a path of darkness, one he had forced upon the young Uchiha. Her's was a path of light, no matter how bad things got she always managed to look for the good in the situation, she never lost hope. She was the light that kept him together, a light he hoped would never falter.
