Chapter 5: The First C-Rank Mission
Two Weeks After Registration.
“I’m so sick of these nothing missions.” Naruto said. “I wanna be challenged, I wanna put my skills to use.” Naruto said looking directly at the Hokage.
“Shut up you idiot.” Sakura yelled raising her fist to hit Naruto over the head but stopped at the look of warning on Naruto’s face.
“Naruto know your place.” Iruka shouted at the defiant blonde.
“It’s alright Iruka.” The Hokage said waving his hand at Iruka to calm down. “What are your opinions on the matter Kakashi?” he said turning his attention to the silver haired Jonin.
“To be perfectly honest I agree 100 percent with Naruto. I wanna see the results of their 2 months of team building training. So a simple C-Rank escort mission would be perfect.” Kakashi said looking at the three Genin behind him.
“Well Kakashi it seems you’re in luck because we have an escort mission right here.” The Hokage said holding up a C-Rank scroll. “The mission is to escort a bridge builder from the village to his home in the Land of Waves. Do you accept the mission?” The Hokage asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Squad Seven accepts this mission.” Kakashi said taking the scroll the Hokage held out for him.
“Good Squad Seven is dismissed. Kakashi stay a little longer.” The Hokage said rising from his seat and walking out onto the balcony behind him.
“Where do you want us to meet for the mission briefing Kakashi sensei?” Sakura asked as the two boys were walking out the door.
“I’ll meet you on the roof in about half an hour.” Kakashi replied before following the Hokage onto the balcony.

The sun had fully risen in the sky and the members of Squad Seven were standing before the Eastern Gate waiting for Kakashi and the bridge builder to arrive. Naruto was leaning against the wall beside the open gates running a whetstone down the blade of one of his katanas.
Ten minutes later Kakashi walked up to the three Genin with a shabby looking man following close behind him.
“Hey guys are you ready? This is Tazuna the bridge builder and our client.” Kakashi said introducing the shabby man.
‘How the hell did this guy afford us?’ Sakura thought as she looked Tazuna up and down.
“Yeah we’re ready Kakashi sensei.” Naruto said standing up and sheathing the katana he had been cleaning and sharpening.
“Well the sooner we start the sooner we finish so let’s go.” Kakashi said leading the way through the gate followed by his squad and the bridge builder. Naruto quickly speed up so that he was walking besides Kakashi.
“Kakashi sensei? Why did you stick up for me when I told the Hokage I wanted a better mission?” Naruto asked the silver haired Jonin.
“I was telling the truth when I said I wanted to see how your teamwork has improved over the last two months but also I can see that you and Sasuke needed a challenge sooner rather than later before you two started tearing into each other.” Kakashi replied truthfully looking down at the blonde boy that was the son of his own sensei.
Behind the silver haired Jonin and the blonde Genin walked a grumbling and complaining Tazuna. Behind him walking side by side were Sasuke and Sakura with the pink haired girl casting sideways glances at the brooding, arrogant and unsocial Uchiha.
Almost fifteen minutes later as they were coming to a crossroad Naruto began to sense the boiling anger of Sasuke. Looking back he could see Sasuke begin walking faster towards him and Kakashi. Grabbing his backpack Naruto began to walk slower falling behind Kakashi as they neared the crossroad. Stopping right in front of Sakura pretending to go through his backpack she walked straight into him while she took another look at Sasuke.
“Hey watch where you’re going.” Sakura exploded before Naruto turned on her placing his hand over her mouth and leaning in close.
“Why don’t you watch where you are going? If you weren’t staring at Sasuke like a love struck puppy you wouldn’t have bumped into me. Remember we’re on a mission keep your mind on it not your struggling love life. Otherwise give up being a Kunoichi you’ll just get yourself or someone else killed.” Naruto growled right in her face before following after the rest of the group over the crossroad.
Following behind the rest of the group Naruto looked over his shoulder to see Sakura standing still looking downcast as she contemplated Naruto’s words.

“The sun’s going down might as well call it a day and set up camp.” Kakashi said as he halted the group and looked around for a good camping site which he found about eighty metres back from the road.
“I’ll set the watch roster now, Naruto first, then Sakura, Sasuke and lastly myself.” Kakashi said as the group began setting up camp, most just finding a place to set their stuff down while Sakura was setting up a small cooking fire.
While the rest of the group were finishing preparations for dinner Naruto walked further into the forest looking for another secluded clearing. Quickly finding another clearing only fifty or so metres away from their campsite.
‘Time for some training but what?’ Naruto thought bringing his hands together in the cross seal and produced an equal one hundred clones. “You guys are gonna do full contact sparring while dual wielding those katanas.” Naruto instructed as the clones began to pair off and begin fighting. The sound of steel clashing against steel echoed throughout the clearing as Naruto entered the sewers of his mindscape.
“Kurama I think it’s time for some more training with the Hiraishin (Flying Thunder God Technique).” Naruto said as he walked up to the prison that held the Nine-Tailed Fox.
While in his mindscape and looking at the perfect copy of the Hirashin formula Naruto wrote and copied the formula tracing it on his palm before pouring chakra into it until the formula glowed blue. He stopped pouring chakra into the formula and allowed it to fade away. Once all traces of the formula were gone he began to internally pour chakra into his palm until the formula appeared on his palm as if written in ink.
“Stop Naruto you’re pouring in too much chakra.” Kurama yelled just as the formula began to turn red before the formula exploded in his hand, causing Naruto to scream in pain leaving his hand scarred and slightly burnt. All the clones around the clearing instantly dispelled into a cloud of smoke that obscured the clearing.
At Naruto’s scream the rest of the group raced into the smoke ridden clearing lead by Kakashi. As the smoke began to clear they found Naruto on his knees clutching the wrist of his scarred and burnt hand.
“Naruto are you ok? What happened?” Kakashi said as he looked down at Naruto’s damaged hand.
“Yeah I’m ok Kakashi sensei, just a bit of training gone wrong.” Naruto replied still looking at his hand. At this reply Sasuke just huffed and smirked before he walked back to the camp with a still complaining Tazuna not far behind while Sakura turned away so as not to retch at the smell of burnt flesh.
‘Chakra burns; I wonder what he was practicing? Oh well I better start training them in chakra control next.’ Kakashi thought as he helped Naruto stand up and helped him walk back to camp. Setting Naruto down and resting him up against a tree next to his camping gear Kakashi watched as the burnt skin began to heal before his very eyes. ‘So this is the power of the Nine-Tails.’ Kakashi thought as the last vestiges of burnt skin completely healed leaving no trace that his hand had ever been burnt at all.
Naruto sat and watched his teammates as they moved about the camp doing their own things. Kakashi was across the clearing his head stuck in his usual Make-Out book, Sasuke was up in a tree doing whatever Sasuke did when he was brooding while Tazuna and Sakura were sitting before the fire cooking the group’s dinner. Before long he was lightly snoozing as dusk turned to twilight.
Naruto had been quietly snoozing when he felt a shadow pass over him. Opening one eye he looked up at Sakura as she handed him a bowl of rice topped with pan grilled chicken.
“How’s your hand Naruto? Does it still hurt?” Sakura asked trying to hide her suddenly morbid curiosity.
“It’s fine Sakura, it doesn’t really hurt.” Naruto replied as his mouth salivated at the smell of the food in his hand.
“Oh ok I’ll just leave you to your dinner then.” She replied turning away and walking back to sit beside the fire. Naruto watched her walk away before he tried Sakura’s cooking and was pleasantly surprised at how good the simple meal tasted.
‘Well if she fails at being a Kunoichi she can always fall back on being a cook.’ Naruto thought as he dug in to dinner.

The sun was high in the sky and beat down upon the world below. The group had been walking since morning which was almost six hours ago. Sasuke was leading the group followed by Tazuna and Sakura, while Naruto and Kakashi took up the rear. In front of them in the middle of the road was a large puddle.
‘They really think we’re that stupid? The sun has been beating down for hours.’ Naruto thought as he sniffed the air and sneaked a sideways glance at Kakashi.
“Kakashi sensei. How long until we get to the Land of Waves? Is it one or TWO days more travel?” Naruto asked emphasising the two as looked from Kakashi to the puddle they were walking past. Kakashi nodded as Sasuke grunted and ridiculed the stupidity of Naruto getting a chuckle from Tazuna and Sakura. Naruto rolled his eyes and continued to walk forward until he was the last to pass the puddle.
Suddenly two ninjas wearing rebreather masks appeared from out of the puddle. Both ninjas equipped with a barbed chain weapon attached to their left and right wrists respectively. They quickly blew past Naruto who had already drawn a kunai from his left leg holster. They raced to attack Kakashi wrapping him with the bladed chains before pulling the chains causing the blades to slice Kakashi in two.
“Kakashi sensei.” Sakura screamed as she watched their commander killed.
Dropping to the ground was a split log instead of the lifeless body of Kakashi.
“What the?” one of the ninja said as he heard the solid thud instead of a wet squishing noise. Turning to see what had happened he took Naruto’s kunai through his right eye. With the force of the throw spinning the ninja back around to be caught by his partner. They both quickly turned to face Naruto and charged straight at him. As the two ninja charged at Naruto he took a couple of steps back and drew both katanas drawing the two ninjas in closer and closer. Suddenly between the two ninja was Kakashi his arms around their necks as Naruto rushed forward driving each blade of his two katanas through each of their hearts. Withdrawing the blades from their chests he wiped them clean on the loose shirts of the defeated ninja.
“Well done Naruto.” Kakashi said placing his right hand on Naruto’s shoulder as Naruto sheathed his now clean katanas. As the rest of the group approached Kakashi and Naruto a cool female scent appeared behind the bushes to their right. Drawing the kunai he had retrieved from the eye of one of the Mist ninja he threw it at the spot the scent was coming from.
“You just got lucky don’t show off you idiot.” Sasuke growled as he stared daggers at Naruto. Sakura followed Naruto as he went to retrieve his kunai, the scent all but gone with only a slight trace left. Lying stunned next to the kunai was a pure white snow rabbit.
“Kakashi sensei were these Mist ninja after us or after our client here?” Naruto asked over his shoulder as he retrieved his kunai and picked up the stunned rabbit, which had traces of the mystery female’s scent. ‘Must be for a substitution.’ Naruto thought as he carried the rabbit back to the group unconsciously stroking its soft fur.
“Well mister Tazuna those Mist ninjas were obviously Chunin level assassins and clearly they were after you, so why?” Kakashi asked leaning over the bridge builder trying to intimidate him.
“What I told the village was mostly correct. You see our nation isn’t very wealthy because a gangster named Gato has taken control of our nations harbours. So I’m building a bridge that connects us to the mainland so that we are not under the control of Gato. That’s why we couldn’t pay for a proper escort.” Tazuna explained looking between the four shinobi.
“So you knew you would be attacked by shinobi or is there a specific ninja that is contracted to kill you?” Kakashi asked sternly as the options available to him continued to get smaller and smaller.
“I just assumed he would hire some bounty hunters to hunt me down or bandits to attack me on the way home.” Tazuna replied straight faced.
“He’s lying he knew he was the target of a ninja and he probably know who’s coming after him.” Kurama said laughing at the sneer Naruto directed at the bridge builder in his mindscape.
“He’s lying he knew he was being pursued by ninja.” Naruto said his eyes narrowing as Tazuna glared at him.
“What are we gonna do now Kakashi sensei?” Sakura asked turning away from petting the white rabbit in Naruto’s arms.
“Well the protocol would be to turn back for the village and prepare a proper team for an A-Rank mission.” Kakashi said. “But we don’t have the time to go back we’re less than a day from the Land of Waves and right now that would be the best place to be.” Kakashi continued.
“So were still going ahead with the mission then?” Naruto asked taking a scroll from his bag and unrolled it on the ground. Placing the rabbit on top of the scroll he quickly made some signs and sealed the rabbit away to a hidden location back in Konoha. Re-rolling the scroll Naruto picked it up and put it back in his bag.
“That’s right and we’re probably going to have to deal with a few more Mist shinobi.” Kakashi said allowing Tazuna to get up and follow behind Sasuke and Sakura while he took the rear with Naruto.
“You hid a lot of your abilities while in the Academy Naruto.” Kakashi stated as they followed behind the other three.
“You’re surprised?” Naruto said sarcastically. “You do know who I am right? What I am? Did you know what my life was like?” Naruto fired off becoming angrier and angrier before storming off to walk just ahead of Kakashi.

The group had arrived at the river that would lead them to the boat that would take them across to the Land of Waves. As they neared the riverbank a mist began to swell atop the water’s surface.
“Everybody get back, back away from the water.” Kakashi yelled as the mist began to spread out over the riverbank. Soon the mist had surrounded the group. The mist appeared to be everywhere the eye could see.
“Protect the bridge builder, formation two.” Kakashi ordered as he stood between the three Genin and the river. The three Genin moved into position with Sakura on the left, Sasuke on the right and Naruto in front his two crescent daggers in his hands.
“Kurama I can’t smell or sense anything.” Naruto said to his resident fox spirit.
“It’s a Jutsu, a special Jutsu from the Village Hidden in the Mist. It’s called the Hidden Mist Jutsu; it hides the caster from most forms of detection like sight, smell and chakra sense.” Kurama explained having seen this technique during his imprisonment in Kushina throughout the Third Great Ninja War.
Sniff; sniff ‘What’s that?’ Naruto thought spinning around to find a masked, bare chested man with a giant Greatsword in his hand in the middle of the three Genin. ‘He could have killed us instantly. This Jutsu is dangerous.’ Naruto thought bring his blades up in a defensive posture. Instantly Kakashi was behind the masked man holding a kunai at his throat.
“Surrender or die.” Kakashi said pressing the blade of his kunai harder against the masked man’s throat.
“I think not.” The masked man said turning and slashing his sword through the body of Kakashi who burst into a puff of smoke.
“A shadow clone how clev...” His words were cut off as Kakashi’s kunai slit the masked man’s throat. Falling to ground was nothing more than a puddle of water.
“A water clone huh Zabuza Momochi, Demon of the Hidden Mist?” Kakashi said as he felt the blade of the giant Greatsword on his shoulder.
“How very perceptive of you to notice Kakashi of the Sharingan Eye.” Zabuza said as he swung the blade through Kakashi’s neck. Dropping to the ground where Kakashi’s lifeless body should have been was a puddle of water.
“What the? A water clone.” Zabuza exclaimed turning around to face Kakashi as he thrust his kunai through the heart of Zabuza who burst into another puddle of water.
Naruto burst forward towards Kakashi and the shadow that loomed behind him. Naruto jumped high over Kakashi who at the same time whipped around to face Zabuza. Kakashi dodged under the backhand swing of Zabuza’s sword which Naruto landed on slashing out at Zabuza’s face. Zabuza dodged Naruto’s dagger by flicking his head back. Naruto jumped and back flipped off of Zabuza’s sword over an attacking Kakashi.
As Naruto had attacked Zabuza, Kakashi had pulled up his Leaf headband from over his left eye. Charging ahead Kakashi drew a kunai from the holster on his right leg and engaged with Zabuza.
Landing behind Kakashi as he fought with Zabuza, Naruto sheathed his two crescent daggers into their leather holsters on his lower back. Quickly analysing the fight before him Naruto drew his two Katanas and jumped into the fight with Zabuza as Kakashi took a step back and allowed Naruto room to manoeuvre with his two katanas.
Naruto was a storm of movement as he swirled to the right and back to the left as his speed kept Zabuza on the defensive. The more and more Naruto’s movements began to become erratic the harder it was for the expert swordsman Zabuza to read and defend against. The angrier and more annoyed Zabuza got at Naruto’s movements the easier he got for Kakashi to read and predict.
Tired of Naruto dodging and parrying his blows Zabuza decided to change tactics. Disengaging from Naruto, Zabuza retreated out on to the river where none of the Genin could follow. He quickly went through a multiple series of hand signs. “Water Style: Water Dragon.” From the river’s surface a serpentine dragon emerged to attack Naruto who was standing on the river’s edge.
Sheathing his right katana and holding the left katana horizontally in front of his face. Naruto drew his hand along the blade as he channelled Kurama’s chakra into the katana. As the water dragon began to descend in an attack Naruto drew the charged katana down to his right hip and released all the contained power in a back hand slash. A crescent burst of dark reddish energy erupted from the katana blade and cut through the air to the water dragon decapitating it and causing the water dragon to explode into a burst of rain.
Kakashi quickly followed Zabuza out on to the water’s surface, all the while weaving the same hand signs that Zabuza used to create the water dragon. The water dragon he created smashed down upon the distracted Zabuza sending him deep under the water’s surface.
“Get into defensive positions all of you.” Kakashi shouted not daring to takes his eyes off of the river’s surface.
Sniff, sniff, sniff. ‘That scent it smells familiar. Where have I smelt it before?’ Naruto thought beginning to look around for the owner of the mysterious scent. He was so distracted he almost missed Zabuza’s sneak attack. Naruto quickly blocked and parried Zabuza’s sword redirecting the blade down into the ground next to his left foot. Naruto punched out with the hilt of his katana breaking Zabuza’s nose with a sickening crunch.
Staggering back towards the river’s edge Zabuza dodged to the left as three kunais were thrown from Kakashi who was already completing another Jutsu as Zabuza turned to face the silver haired Jonin. Hidden from view Naruto created multiple clones that soon disappeared into the surrounding area.
“Lightning Style: Lightning Shiver.” Kakashi yelled slamming his palm onto the river’s surface. From the Jonin’s palm electricity arched along the river’s surface racing straight for Zabuza on the river bank.
‘That won’t touch me.’ Zabuza arrogantly thought before he had to quickly jump to avoid being electrocuted.
With Zabuza focused on the threat from Kakashi, Naruto had time to think and search for the mysterious scent. ‘Female? Ah huh the rabbit, it’s the same scent that was on the rabbit. So where is she?’ Naruto thought scanning the trees around them.
“Took you long enough Naruto thought I’d have to give you a hint.” Kurama laughed.
“Shut up you. You’ve had more practice, what a thousand years’ worth?” Naruto retorted pouting a little that he’d been found wanting again.
Naruto quickly found where the scent was coming from. Up in a tree to their left about twenty metres back was a girl in a blue kimono and a white mask.
Watching the more and more one sided Jutsu fight between Kakashi and Zabuza, Naruto was ready when the mysterious girl decided to intervene.
“Kakashi lookout.” Naruto yelled throwing the three shuriken in his hand to intercept the senbon the girl had thrown at the two combatants. With a clang the shuriken and senbon collided falling to the soft grass below.
The two Jonin drew apart at the clash of metal. During the break in the fight Naruto’s hidden clones attacked Zabuza. Their relentless assault had Zabuza reeling. The Naruto clones attacked over and over driving Zabuza further and further into the river.
As the fight went on Zabuza received cuts to his face, wrists, chest, legs and arms. Blood began to flow from these many cuts.
One clone snap kicked Zabuza in the chest while another two kicked out at his knees. Zabuza was plunged under the water’s surface and was quickly swept away in the current, weak from all the blood loss. The original watched as the mysterious girl up and left heading downstream.
“That was fun I sooo wanna do it again come on Zabuza.” Naruto sadistically crowed as he looked downstream just hoping beyond hope that Zabuza would be back for another round.
Both Sasuke and Sakura were looking at him weirdly as if he had suddenly grown another head. Not only had Naruto jumped into seamless combat between two very experienced Jonin but had been a help in keeping Kakashi fresh rather than a hindrance for Kakashi to watch over and keep safe.
“Is the bridge builder safe?” Kakashi asked as he walked to where the three Genin stood guard over the bridge builder.
“Yes Kakashi sensei the bridge builder is safe and unharmed.” Sakura saluted while she answered.
“Well done Squad Seven. I knew you were up for the challenge.” Kakashi said standing before the Genin as he pulled his headband down to cover his left eye.
“Kakashi sensei I think Zabuza has a partner or maybe even a squad of his own.” Naruto said sheathing his katana.
“Yeah right Naruto. Stop trying to be something you’re not.” Sasuke huffed arrogantly crossing his arms and sneering at Naruto’s back.
Naruto wheeled around to face Sasuke. “Go on Sasuke what am I?” Naruto asked trying to intimidate the brash Uchiha.
“You’re a weak talentless pretender, a weak common nobody born to even weaker commoner nobodies. Abandoned, unwanted and unneeded. You are a fucking weakling, worth nothing including the air you breathe.” Sasuke shouted in Naruto’s face spittle flying from his almost frothing mouth.
Naruto burst into action so fast that before anybody knew it Naruto had Sasuke pinned to the ground the blade of a crescent dagger pressing deeply into his throat blood already trickling down his neck to stain his blue shirt.
“That’s a lot coming from a so-called elite Uchiha who hasn’t even unlocked his full Sharingan yet. Listen closely you piece of shit Sasuke because I won’t repeat myself.” Naruto snarled pushing the blade of the dagger harder into Sasuke’s neck.

Naruto trailed the rest of his squad by almost one hundred metres as they entered Tazuna’s home village. Tazuna lead the group through the village to his house on the shore of the ocean. The group followed Tazuna inside except for Naruto who bypassed the house altogether and continued to the end of the wharf. Sitting down with his backpack beside him Naruto withdrew a map and the three Uzumaki folders. “Uh that one Mito Uzumaki.” Naruto said placing the other two folders back into his backpack. Opening the dossier past the death certificate, marriage certificate, basic ninja profile sheet and the birth certificate to the full Ninja Profile. Sifting through the first three pages Naruto came to the page he wanted, a map of the continent during the Second Great Ninja War.
‘There it is so where is the Land of Eddies compared to today.’ Naruto thought as he held the older map over the map of the present, shifting the front map down so that he could see the northern coasts of the continent on both maps.
‘It’s like the Land of Eddies just what was swallowed by the sea?’ Naruto thought angrily as he searched both maps from left to right before something small caught his eye.
‘It can’t be can it? This archipelago that makes up the Land of Waves can’t be the only remains of the Land of Eddies?’ Naruto thought looking and relooking between the two maps. ‘These few small islands can’t be the only land masses left? There must be something going on something I’m missing.’ He continued to think as he returned to looking at Mito’s files. He was almost all the way through the files when he came to a fascinating bunch of sheets.
“Uh huh, that’s it the Uzumaki clan had special and potent chakras that gave them extended life spans and made them master users of seals and barriers all except me huh Kurama?” Naruto said to the fox spirit.
“It’s why the Uzumaki’s were used as my prison over the last five centuries. Your Uzumaki bloodline traits have probably been diluted by your father’s blood.” Kurama explained as Naruto continued to read Mito’s files until he came across a technique that all Uzumaki’s had used ‘The Chakra Chains.’
“You’re not planning on learning that repugnant technique?” Kurama asked.
“Of course I’m gonna learn it. It will make my plans flow more smoothly. Besides I won’t be using it on you more likely to use it on Sasuke and the rest of the Hidden Leaf Village.” Naruto joked while stashing Mito’s file back into his backpack.
“Well this phase of my plan will need more time and work, uh this fucking sucks.” Naruto huffed as he stared out at the ocean before him. ‘Somewhere out there is my clan’s home and I will reclaim it.’ Naruto promised.
