Chapter 5 Healing PLEASE VOTE! THANK YOU! Hinata shot up in her bed, breathing deeply. The long, pink, kitty t-shirt, she used as a nightgown, clung to her damp chest and sweaty arms. She tossed the blankets off and placed her feet onto the ground. Sitting there, wiping away tears from her warm face, she tried to sort through what had just happened. The big red letters of her alarm clock cut through the darkness, 12:14. It was the middle of the night. Relief swept over her as realized that she was dreaming. The man from earlier, Sesshomaru, hadn’t died. It was all a nightmare. The startling sound of a classic ringer, from the old white phone in the kitchen, nearly made her jump off the bed. Who would be calling this late? Her stomach tightened, as the foggy memories from her dream lingered. Slowly she stood, moving across the cold tile, towards the chiming, echoing through the open kitchen. It had reached the seventh ring before she cautious placed the receiver to her ear. “Light, is that you?” her fearful voice barely managed to squeaked the words out. “Light? Ah, Dude, no. Ummm, I’m calling for Josh. He there? You’re that girl, right? The one from… Hey, fuck man, can’t you see I’m on the phone…” the slurring voice argued with someone Hinata couldn’t make out over the music. “No, you have the wrong number. Don’t call here again.” She hung up before giving the teenager a chance to rebuttal. Legs left shaky from her second near heart attack in the last five minutes, she sat down on a tall padded bar stool, slouching over the island. She grabbed an apple from the bowl, rolling it back and forth across the black granite counter. Why was she bothered by this so much? For some reason she couldn’t get Sesshomaru out of her head. It had taken several hours to calm down enough to sleep, and as soon as she did, this happened. What was it about him? She only talked to him for a few minutes, and honestly he seemed to be quite the jerk. He hadn’t even thanked her for a ride. A short snicker escaped deep within, and she whacked the apple on the ebony slab. Of course he hadn’t thanked her. She knew the stubborn type well enough to know that he wouldn’t be grateful about that. In fact he was probably more pissed and ashamed more then anything else, having to rely on a girl for help. He was just so damn arrogant and prideful. God, he reminded her a lot of her brother. Maybe, that’s why she helped him? She smirked at the idea of bailing out Neji. He kept her away when he was out causing trouble, and she never had the opportunity to really help. It would have felt great, with as many times as he had saved her, to have just once saved him… The smiled faded as her chest began to fill with a very familiar pain. Maybe she had missed the only chance she ever had. She rose to her feet, grabbed the now bruised apple, and threw it into the trash. Knowing she would soon be sobbing if she didn’t take her mind off of her brother, she went to the fridge and pulled out diet cola. She tapped the top several times with a long natural nail, before cracking it open and taking a sip. The strong bubbles coated her stinging throat as they went down, easing the sharp pain. Good, she sure was tried of crying today. Enough was enough, time to act her age. Slipping on a pair of grey sweat shorts, and white sandals, she grabbed her keys. No way was she getting back to bed now, or at least not without checking on her neighbor. All she was going to do was knock on his door, make sure he was still alive, let him bite her head off for impeding on his privacy, possible dodge the shot he might take at her, then come home satisfied, now being able to sleep. Sounded like a plan. A really bad plan. ************* Hinata turned her truck around in front of Sesshomaru’s house, pointing it back down the long driveway before killing the engine. She left the e-brake off and keys in the ignition, making for a quicker escape, if needed. Quietly as possible, she stepped from the truck and walked up the large stone stairs to the massive door. This is crazy. What the hell am I doing? He’s fine. He wasn’t bleeding that bad. I know he’s fine. And as soon as I prove that fact, I’ll feel lots better. The argument had repeated many times on the drive. Knowing this was stupid, she couldn’t help herself. She needed to see that he was safe. She softly knocked on the door and held her breath, anticipating to make a run for her truck. Nothing. Releasing her saved air and taking in a fresh batch, she rapped her knuckles against it a little louder. Still, nothing. Anxiously she shifted and placed a ear to the door. If there was any sound coming from in the house, she wasn’t going to hear it this way. The wood was too thick. This time she pounded a fist, and placed one foot down the first stair, ready to take off in an instant. Seconds turned in minutes as she stood, posed for an escape, but nothing happened. Hinata’s stomach turned, filling her with a gut wrenching fear. Why wasn’t he answering? She went to the door, placed one hand the handle and the other in the middle, waiting for something, anything to tell her what she should do. She was only answered with a few chirps from far off crickets. “Okay.” Finding some courage, she pressed down on the large button of the handle. The sound of the click carried over the entire yard as she pushed the door in. It opened smoothly and closed quietly, as she slipped into the extremely dark house. She could see nothing except a dim glow coming from up ahead, barely making the outlines of furniture visible. “Hello? Sesshomaru, are you there?” Receiving no answer, she continued deeper, coming to a hallway opening where the light seemed to originate. “Hello? It’s me, Hinata.” Her words bounced through the hallway. She ran hand over the walls, using them as a guide, trying to keep from knocking into something as she followed the glow. Stopping when she came to a barely cracked door, she pushed it open and froze. With the help of the light spilling in from the partly open bathroom she could see him. Not ten feet in front of her, Sesshomaru. He lay motionless on navy blue colored sheets. Dressed in a pair of yellow shorts, his hair pulled over his shoulders, and his skin seemed paler than before He looked like a porcelain doll. She step closer and reached out a hand, letting her fingers barely grazed the fair skin of his shoulder. Not even getting a chance to blink, she found her forearm tightly gripping in a large hand. It took less then a second for Sesshomaru to yank her down and pin her to the bed. He quickly maneuvered her arms over her head, pinning them with his hands. His legs pressed against hers, stopping the ability to kick. “Please…” she begged, looking in to the half open eyes of the man binding her. ************************ Gaara slammed his Eclipse into park in front of the Sunny Days Medical Clinic. Jumping from his car, he ran to the door, and banged. Within seconds, a ghostly pale Kiba opened it, letting Gaara into the large waiting room. A small receptionist counter sat behind rows of high school style chairs. Behind the counter was five doors spanning the wall. One label “Bathroom,” another “Office,” and three marked, “Examination Room,” numbered one, two and three. “Where is he?” Gaara’s demanding voice made the brunet avoid eye contact as he pointed to Examination Room 3. Gaara pushed by Kiba and headed to the room. A firm hand grabbed his shoulder, stopping him in his tracks. Spinning around he slapped the hand away and glared. Sasuke met Gaara straight on. “Sorry, no one can go in. Tsunade is still working on him.” “Fuck!” The red head gritted his teeth and picked up the closest chair, chucking it across the room and knocking a lamp off on the coffee table, shattering it. “What have you heard?” Trying hard to contain his angry, he forced himself to sit, feeling useless. “We managed to get him here quickly, and we caught Tsunade still on her first bottle.” Relief flowed over Gaara, at least this time the doctor wasn’t shit faced. Sasuke continued, “Her little nurse, Naruto’s friend, came out a little while ago. Said the bullet passed right through his shoulder, so he should be alright. We got lucky” Gaara took a sigh of relief and turned to the normally vocal Kiba, who was now dead silent. “What happened?” “Umm,” the boy couldn’t even start before tears flooded his eyes, “Man, I don’t know. One minute that guy was dead weight, and the next…” He words squeaked to a stop, as he motioned to the room. Pointing and shaking a finger as he tried to finish his sentence, “and the next… this. I’m so sorry.” Kiba dropped his hand, shook his head, and turned, hurrying out the front door. Gaara let him go, leaving himself alone with Sasuke, they newest member of their family, of only six months. This was the first big job Gaara sent him on. He had hoped that if Sasuke went with Naruto, it would keep the newbie safe. And it wasn’t like the kid didn’t have anything to contribute. He was a really good shot, better then anyone Gaara had ever met. Besides, maybe Naruto could get the withdrawn kid open up a little. He did have that affect on people. Gaara never imagined, that three of his Bakutos, couldn’t handle one lone Yakuza, even with the element of surprise on their side. Could it be that they weren’t ready for this yet? The examination room opened up. Gaara stood to meet the small figured, pink haired, girl as she stormed over to him. “You have a lot of explaining to do.” The small girl shot him a death looked that would scare any man twice her size. “What the hell did you get him into?” Unsure of how to answer the question, Gaara ignored it, opting for asking one of his own instead, “Sakura. Is he alright?” Hostile glare still fixed on him, she huffed a few times before answering, “He’s alive, but you can’t see him yet.” Another deep sigh came from Gaara. Naruto was alive. The moment of rejoicing was short lived as Sakura turned to Sasuke asking in honey coated words, “Hey, mind giving me a minute with Gaara?” “Yeah, sure.” He turned and walked towards the door. “Thank you so much,” she purred after him. Her voice was always uncharacteristically sweet whenever she spoke to Sasuke. As soon as the door closed, she motioned to a set of chairs leaning against the wall. They took a seat and waited in an awkward silence. Gaara didn’t know much about this girl, other then she was Naruto’s school friend, and she had a violent temper. She once broke two of the windows of Naruto’s car when he shaved his hair in a Mohawk. Claiming if she ever again saw him trying to make himself look stupider then he normally did, she would break his legs instead of a window. Sakura was a terror when she was upset, but what made it worse, was the fact she was normally right. She had a sharp mind, and didn’t lack in common sense. She was also loyal and very protective of her friends, almost motherly in the way she treated Naruto. It was the main reason that Gaara and her hadn’t clicked well. He knew she resented him for “stealing” Naruto away from her. It probably didn’t help that he never even attempted to get to know her. “Okay,” she started, breaking the silence. “Listen, I don’t know what Naruto sees in you, but I can’t sit by and watch you kill him. I get it, you guys spent some time together at that orphanage, but that was like 12 years ago, and it doesn’t give you the right to mess up his life now. He was going to make it. He was going to get out of this damned city. Did you know he had a college scholarship to play football? But no, you got to come from the depths of hell and take him. Now he’s in a neighborhood clinic with a gunshot. A Gunshot! You think we’re even set up for emergencies? No, we’re not? First you get him shoot, and then risk his life by bringing him here.” She stopped, taking a second to catch her breath. Gaara didn’t attempt to argue her accusation, as he waited for her to restart. “Sorry, but I can’t take this anymore. Gaara, I am asking, no, begging, if you ever cared about Naruto, please let him go. Tell him to go back home, to his parents and his peaceful life.” Her wide eyes pleaded with him as she waited for an answer. Moments passed as he contemplated her words. She hadn’t known the whole situation. It was obvious that Naruto had kept things from her, probably to avoid a beating. Whatever his reason were to lie to her, Gaara knew that they weren’t good enough. Saruka cared about him, and she was right, Naruto belonged at home. “Tell him to go home? I’ve told him to go home almost everyday for two and half years. And everyday he tells me that he will leave the next. Once I even took him for a ride and kicked him to the curb in front of his parents house like a dog, but he still came back. He can do better, I know that, but I can’t get him to leave.” “Really?” Sakura stared in amazement. “Why? Why does he stay?” “I don’t know.” The red head stood, grab his chair and walked to the third examination room. Setting it in front the wall directly next to the door, and sat, resting his head against the wall. The very least he could do was stay by his side, the way Naruto had always done for him. *********************** “Please….. I’m sorry,” the small voice under him pleaded. “Hinata?” Half asleep and dazed, Sesshomaru tried to make sense of what was going on. The little girl squirmed as she vainly attempted to free herself. The feeling of her supple breasts rubbing against his chest separated only by a t-shirt, caused him to quickly become alert. Feeling a tug, he released her hands, using his forearms to prop himself up, still on top of her, noses almost touching as his hair veiled around her head. Hands free, she clamed down and the wiggling ceased. Her eyes stared deeply into his, giving him the strange feeling he was being looked into, not looked at. As if she could see something no one else could. It was eerie. Attempting to the shake the feeling, he questioned her, “What are you doing in my house?” Her baby blue eyes continued their gaze, as she spoke, “You’re hot.” Unable to suppress the smirk, he cocked an eyebrow. “What?” Hinata’s ivory skin flushed red, as he shot her a look of pure amusement. “N-no, I didn’t mean it like that. I meant to say you’re chest is hot.” His smirk widen, along with her eyes. Was she always so good at putting her foot in her mouth? Watching the ever darkening girl was entertaining as she shook her head side to side. Like she ways trying to fling off the crimson color covering her cheeks. After settling down once again, and returning to a fairer color, she cupped a freezing hand to his forehead. An icy thumb trace his crescent moon shaped tattoo before she pulled the hand down his cheek, carefully maneuvering around cuts and bruises. Allowing her to touch him for the moment, curious of what she was going to do next, he began to feel light headed. “I really meant to say, you’re warm. You have a fever.” Dizziness set in. He pulled away and rolled off, coming to rest on the bed next to her. “You keep medicine your bathroom?” She got up, tugged down the pink shirt, covered in many tiny little kittens, before walking towards the light. “Some,” he said before sliding to the edge on his bed. Placing his feet firmly on the floor, he ran his hands over his head, and through his long hair. The room felt cold, and the place were she laid her hand, burned with an icy sensation. She had to be right. A fever would explain why the whole world was freezing. He watched through the door as she riffled through his medicine cabinet, pleased she was careful not to misplace any of the well organized bottles. Putting everything back exactly where she had found it before removing the one she wanted. Leaving the door wide open, flooding the bedroom with light, she returned holding two oval pills. He quickly recognized them as Tylenol. “Here,” She handed him the pills. “Um, I can get you some water. Where’s the kitchen?” “No need,” he replied. Reaching down to the front of his night stand, he pulled open a door revealing a mini fridge packed with water bottles and a lone bottle of rum. He pulled two out and offered one to Hinata. “Oh, thanks.” She smiled, accepting the token. Sesshomaru cracked the seal on his cap and swigged down a mouthful of water and pills. Placing the bottle on the stand, he stood, legs wobbly as he made his way to his dresser. Sliding open a drawer, he pulled out a white undershirt. He began to slide his hands in it when she started to protest from behind him, “You should leave shirt off.” Despite the fact he was extremely sore, and sick, he couldn’t help have some fun at this little girl’s expense. Once again he shot her the same quirky grin complete with a cocked eyebrow. He couldn’t help that her air headedness put him in a playful mode. “Come on, stop looking at me like that. I just meant the less clothes you have on the easier you cool down,” she pouted and slammed a foot on the floor. “Want I should lose my shorts? That would help even more.” Shocked at just how playful he felt, he decided it must be the fever cooking his brain. “Ah, um….” Hinata managed no fully formed words, just a few strange sounds. He slipped the shirt on anyways and returned to his seat on the bed, with a stunned girl standing next to him. Enough playtime, time to get down to business. “You never answered my question,” his voice returned to his normal monotone pitch. “Sorry, not sure what I should say to something like that. I think it would be best if you left your boxers on, I guess.” I guess? He pushed through the urge to tease her about her choice of words, and continued with his originally line of questioning. “Not that. Why are you here?” “Ha-ha,” she sarcastically laughed, taking her time staring at her feet before answering him. By the time she looked back up the red in her cheeks along with her smile were gone. “I had a nightmare and I was worried.” Her voice was quiet, and sad. “Worried? About what?” He was genuinely confused of what kind of a nightmare would lead her to his house in the middle of the night. “Don’t mess with me,” her tone was heated and sounded pissed. “You. I was worried about you. Now that I see you’re fine, I’ll go.” Stunned at her words, he rolled them around his head. Trying to find a hidden motive behind her actions, but he didn’t hear anything but truth from her. If she was lying, she was very good at it. “Wait.” He stood and caught the girl’s shoulder, twirling her around to face him. She stiffened to his touch, staring towards the door, avoiding his face. “Why?” He placed a finger under her chin, bringing her eyes up to met his. “Why, me?” “I’m sorry.” Hinata pulled away and stood back. “I really am.” She spun back around and hurried to the door, leaving him alone with his peaceful solitude.
