The weeks that followed, where busy ones for Sai. He took every mission that came his way, never stayed in the village for very long, and avoided the hospital like the plague. He did not think he could see her, not so soon. Five weeks after their last encounter found Sai in the Hokage's office, begging for another mission.
"No," was the resounding reply. Sai set his jaw, "Why?" "Because, you have had twenty missions in the month. That is ten more then I usually allow one of my Ninja to take each month," She replied easily. Sai glared a little. He had never heard about this limit. "Therefore," The Fifth continued, "You are on vacation for the next two weeks." "And what," Sai asked, keeping his voice calm and light despite the urge to yell," am I expected to do?" "I don't know. I don't care; as long as I don't see you in my office for two weeks and you stay in the village, I'll be happy. Naruto is in town, hang out with him." Sai stiffened. He'd also avoided Naruto. Their last conversation had not gone well. And knowing Naruto, he was probably following Sakura. Resigned to his fate, Sai bowed to the village head, turned on his heal and left. He took a detour home, through the market. If he was expected to stay in his apartment, he would need groceries. It took him an hour to navigate through the chaos of the streets and get home. As if a person who had no heart (figuratively) could say they have a home, he thought as he unlocked the door. Unsurprisingly, there was at least an inch of dust on every surface of his apartment. He sighed looking around. For the first time, he felt it was missing something. He shook his head, everything was as he left it. The air was stale and it made his throat itch. Sighing, he went about making his apartment livable again. His fridge took the longest. He hadn't thought about the consequences of leaving food in his fridge for five weeks. It was like Naruto's apartment. He was elbow deep in sludge when there was a knock on the door. Whoever it was wasn't going. Nasty sludge and all Sai went to answer the door, only to have it nearly hit him in the face, when his visitor kicked it open. "Eh, sorry man," said the intruder. "You were taking so long though." "Naruto," Sai acknowledged, closing the door and wondering back to the kitchen. The silence was deafening as Sai went back to cleaning and Naruto stood by the sink, watching but not watching. Finally, as Sai finished with the fridge and moved to wash his hands, Naruto spoke. "You're avoiding me." "Yes," Sai whispered. "Fair enough. Why?" "I thought," Sai began, but stopped mid-sentence to collect himself. "I thought you would not want to see me after..." Sai trailed off, not wanting to say after I fucked the love of your life. "After Sakura?" Naruto ground out. "No, I didn't, but I didn't expect you to go to the lengths you went to keep avoiding me. It's impressive really. Six assassinations, twelve recon, and two scroll deliveries in five weeks, you gotta be running on fumes. What I don't get is why you'd avoid Sakura too. Unless, she broke it off and you had feelings for her." Sai's silence must have meant a lot to Naruto because the blonde man continued. "Oh my God, you do. You have feelings for her don't you?" "No," Sai said emphatically, “I do not and cannot have feeling for anyone. Sakura made it very clear. What we were doing was strictly sexual." Naruto winced, making Sai wince. "I'm sorry. I know it's difficult to hear this about someone you love." They were quiet for a while after that. Sai found himself unable to stay still, having not sat idly in five weeks, so he continued to clean. He was almost finished dusting when Naruto's voice came from the couch, "Did she tell you who her first was?" Sai shook his head," I didn't ask." "Why not?" Naruto frowned. "Don't you think you had a right to know?" Sai shrugged. "If she'd wanted me to know, she would have told me. So no." "Did you tell her who your first was?" "She didn't ask. And isn't it bad form to talk about previous partners?" "Not always." "Since you're asking, and I know you know, you don't like who it was do you?" Sai had moved on to sweeping and mopping the floor. Naruto grumbled. "I take it that's a yes?" "No, I don't like who it was," Naruto admitted. "You wouldn't either." "There's only one person that I would not want it to be, Naruto," Sai sighed. "And that would be?" Naruto asked sounding confused. "Sasuke," Sai whispered, closing his eyes. Praying that if Naruto was going to say who, he didn't say that. "Wow, huh. I guess that would be worse case scenario. Relax, would ya? It wasn't him. But I still don't like it." "Do you not like it because it wasn't you?" Sai asked, looking at his "guest" in the face for the first time since he'd been there. "Who was your first? Or are you mad because you feel left out?" "M-my first? Does it matter?" "Apparently. Would you like to know who my first was? A random girl from the Hidden Cloud. There. Now, who was your first?" Naruto looked away. He was silent for a while, and Sai let the conversation drop, returning to his cleaning. "I always thought my first time would be with Sakura, you know? But when I realized she would never feel that way about me I," Naruto paused. Sai was again watching him. "I gave up on her. I still love her, but not that way anymore. So I wasn't mad at you for sleeping with a girl I was in love with." "Then why were you mad?" Sai found himself asking, not meaning to. "You slept with a girl I consider my sister." "Ah, I've heard that men with sisters can be very protective. I apologize for sleeping with your sister," Sai smiled. "You are pushing your luck, Sai," Naruto quipped, standing. "Well, I gotta go. Kakashi wanted to train today one-on-one. See ya." Suddenly curiosity got the better of Sai and he found himself calling the man back, “Naruto." "Yeah?" "Who was it?" "Oh, my first hasn't happened." "I know that, Dickless. Who was Sakura's?" "Oh, Kankuro." Sai blinked. "The Kazekage's brother?" "Yep." Naruto left. Sai was relieved. At least, he thought, it wasn't the fucking traitor. No wonder she couldn't continue a relationship with him though. He lived so far away it would hardly be possible to carry on a relationship without strain. "Why, again, does it anger you that Kankuro was her first? You trust him don't you?" "Yeah, but I don't get how face paint is sexy? Personally, I think it's kind of gay, but that's just me." Sai shrugged; he didn't really understand it himself but he guessed he didn't really need to understand. It wasn't as if Sakura was marrying him. Naruto left shortly after their conversation, one that Sai was beginning to think they should not have had. He had told Sakura he didn't care who her first had been. He chalked it to the heat. He was sweating profusely by the time he decided to take a shower. Sai hissed as he pealed his shirt off. He hadn't realized that the wound he'd received had begun to bleed and made his shirt stick to the stitches he'd given himself. He looked at the gash. It was red, which he attributed to the blood. Thinking nothing of it, he got in the shower, groaning when the spray hit him. He was only under the water a few minutes before he started to get dizzy. He stumbled as he climbed out of the tub. He realized he was in trouble then. He scrambled to where he'd dropped his gear. Pulling out a scroll and his ink and brush, he quickly wrote a message and drew a pigeon. He tied the note to its leg and told it to find Naruto or Kakashi. He found the strength to pull on pants so he wouldn't be found in nothing but a towel. He drug himself up on his bed and passed out. "Sai!" He heard someone shout. "Oh Kami, are you alright?" "Naruto, he's passed out," came another voice. "Look at that wound. It's seriously infected. We need to get him to the hospital, and fast." He was then picked up and he lost whatever consciousness he had. He woke up hours later in a white walled room that smelled of cleaning products. He sat up and surveyed the room. Naruto was passed out across the room in a chair. Kakashi stood by the window, book in hand as always. "You gave us quiet the scare." "My apologies," Sai muttered. "Why didn't you get that wound checked out when you got home?" Kakashi asked, putting away his book, which anyone who knew the man knew was a serious gesture. Sai shrugged. "I didn't want to." Kakashi sighed. "Sakura says that had we found you any later than we did you would have gone into shock. You did a good job of sewing yourself up, but it was severely infected." At the sound of her name, Sai's head snapped to his captain. "Sakura? She treated me?" "Yeah, per her order she's the one who treats Team Kakashi, unless she's otherwise engaged. Why, does that concern you?" "No, I was just surprised," Sai was surprised; he was surprised that he was able to act so normal in front of Kakashi. If he was being honest with himself, he was more afraid for Kakashi to find out the aspects of his relationship with Sakura than he was for Naruto to. "You seem nervous Sai," The older man told him. "Is it because you don't want me to know why you've been taking so many solo missions?" Sai's hand twitched and he had the urge to flee. "I know, you know, "Kakashi told him. "W-what are you talking about?" Sai figured his voice cracked from not being used. "I know that you and Sakura had a fight of some kind. And you've been avoiding her." Sai breathed in a sigh of relief. "At least, that's what she said." Sai's heart began racing. "I don't believe her at all. I pretend to. She probably thinks I think she's a virgin." "Oh Kami," Naruto whispered from the chair. "Not the conversation I want to wake up to. I'll just go get the nurse or something." Kakashi watched Naruto leave. "I figured as much. You want to tell me what's really going on between the three of you?" Sai was silent for a long time. "We had a fight. That's all." Kakashi sighed again. "Alright. Don't tell me. I'm pretty sure I've got the gist of it." A knock on the door gave Sai the salvation he was looking for, until the door opened. She was just as beautiful as she was before. She smiled at him and he felt his chest tighten painfully. Sub-consciously, he began rubbing it. "Sai," she asked as her brows knotted, in what he figured was concern, "Why are you rubbing your chest? Is there another injury?" Not trusting his own voice, Sai just shook his head. "Well, let’s have a look at that gash then," Sakura said lifting his covers. He lay back as she did so she could check it. As she did he observed her. Had he not been watching her, he would have seen the realization in Kakashi's eye. "Well, the infection is gone, but I'm going to put you on some antibiotics just in case, you should be able to go back to avoiding me tomorrow." Her tone was light but both men could tell she was hurting. Sai winced, but nodded. She threw his covers back over him and left the room, bumping Naruto's shoulder as she did. "Sakura," Naruto called after her, "I said sorry. Sakura. Sakura!" "Okay," Kakashi said. “Now I really need to know why she's upset with the both of you." Naruto cleared his throat. "Well," he said looking at Sai. "Sakura may have told Sai something in secret and he may have told me. And I may have over reacted to it." Kakashi's visible eye widened then narrowed, "That's not the whole story, but I gather that's all you two are willing to tell me." At their silence he continued. "Secrets are secret for a reason. If someone tells you something in confidence, especially a woman, you should not break that confidence. I have a pretty good idea about what the secret was. And yeah, you over reacted Naruto. Avoiding her was not the right course of action, however, especially if you need her medical expertise." Kakashi drug Naruto away to further berate him over his harsh treatment of Sakura. Sai stared out the window. Kakashi was right, but in the situation Sai knew that he needed, at that moment, to tell Naruto. "You are a piece of work," came a familiar voice from the door. Turning he was a little surprised to find Tsunade in his door way. "Lady Tsunade," Sai acknowledged. "What brings you here?" "You, of course. You're quiet stupid for someone so calculating," She said, sitting in the chair, which she had pulled up to the bed. “You should know better than to ignore your health." "I was fine when I was in your office. It was stitched. I thought I was fine." "No, you were not!" Tsunade raged. "You were dying Sai. How dare you stare me in the face with a serious wound and not say anything? You're actions have caused serious duress in the village. Especially for Sakura." "I don't see why she would be so concerned with me. It's not like I mean anything to her at all," as soon as the words were out of his mouth, he regretted them. She slapped him so hard; he thought his head might have spun around. "Sakura loves you. She considers you one of her closest friends. You have some serious soul searching to do Sai. I don't care what happened to make you so cold to her but it stops now. You've been suspended for an additional two weeks. Maybe that will teach you to avoid medical attention because of a stupid fight." "A month? No missions for a month! What am I supposed to do?" "Pull your head out of your ass and apologize to Sakura first of all! After that, I don't care what the hell you do." She left him to wallow in his annoyance. Sai felt horribly. He had no idea that he'd caused such an incident, but he vowed to do as told and apologize for his actions first thing in the morning. He fell asleep hoping that Sakura would be receptive, though he doubted that he would make it out uninjured. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
