Even as the entrance came crashing down behind them, they didn't pause or look back but they did slow down, exercising caution.
As light disappeared, Hinata pushed chakra out through her palm as she would’ve done to use her Gentle Fist taijitsu but instead of letting it become a thin line of streamed chakra designed to interrupt chakra flow, she forced it to swirl around her hand forming a deep blue glow of light, illuminating the narrow passage in front of them. The path ran straight with no end in sight and there was just enough space for them to run side by side. Once again, Gaara was impressed; this girl never stopped surprising him. Inappropriately, he wondered what else she could do with that body of hers. That serious face was incredibly sexy in the flickering blue glow and that almost naked body under his jacket... Realising he'd been staring at her out of the corner of his eye, Gaara swallowed hard, forcing himself to focus again at the task at hand, but the heat that rose under his collar didn't fade. Up ahead a fork appeared, the path splitting into two. He didn't sense any enemies ahead along either path. Hinata was thinking similar thoughts, but unlike Gaara her eyes could see the residual chakra lines their enemies left behind, it was what she’d been using as a guide since they’d entered the underground path and down one side there was only darkness. She didn’t have to exchange glances with Gaara to know they’d have to split up. It wasn’t ideal but at least she could prevent Gaara from going down the dangerous path. With a burst of speed she shot ahead of him heading down the chakra infused tunnel. Gaara was surprised at Hinata’s sudden eagerness but didn’t hesitate to go down the other path. *** As soon as she entered her path, Hinata snuffed out the light emanating from her palm. Her Byakugan saw everything she needed so the light had really only been for Gaara. She wondered briefly if he’d be okay in the dark but pushed it aside again as a foolish thought. He was the Kazekage and his abilities second to none. Instead she should be worried about her own situation. Her feet pounded on the glass surface beneath her, keen eyes searching for the presence of the missing nins. Glass? The thought penetrated her sub conscious, overriding her desire to find the enemy. They had been running down a glass path this whole time, she was surrounded by it. What she'd previously mistake for residual chakra lines was actually chakra infused with the glass. The path Gaara had gone down had also been made of glass, but she had sensed no chakra within it. That in itself made no sense. Why strengthen this path with chakra but not the other? It dawned on her suddenly. Of course! Why create a random passage in the middle of nowhere in a foreign country so far out of Sunagakure? Why had they stumbled onto it so conveniently? The answer was simple; it was a trap. They had already known the two of them were at the Oasis. This wasn't an attack on Sunagakure, this was purely for them. She cursed herself for allowing them to split up but she had not to put the Kazekage in danger and purposefully let him head down the wrong path but if this was a trap for them than they must have been aware that she was a Hyuuga and like a fool she'd fallen for their ploy. Now's not the time to be worrying about your mistakes, she thought to herself. This meant they’d had a genjutsu user and a good enough one to fool her eyes. She had to get to Gaara fast. She spun on her heel and stopped dead in her tracks. She'd been so panicked she'd missed the shinobi that had risen from the ground out of his hiding spot, blocking her from going back. She could see the chakra lines flowing through him and down into the glass. He was the one creating the glass passages. Behind her she sensed the emergence of another shinobi from the ground, blocking her movements from both directions. They had been hiding in plain sight the whole, using the chakra flowing through the glass to hide their presence. "So, you saw through it already." the one now in front of her said. "The Hyuuga eyes sure are good." He was tall and lanky with white hair cropped short and an easy smile on his face. He may have been mistaken for handsome if not for the evil glint in his small beady eyes. Hinata maintained her calm. If this trap was designed for both of them than surely they knew that they had the Kazekage, but she couldn't rule out the possibility that they were after herself. This would not be the first time she'd been a target as the heiress of the Hyuuga clan. The other thought she had was that they were trying to set up Gaara. If it were to look like the head of Suna had struck down the heiress of the clan, it wouldn't just mean strained relations between the two villages, it would mean all out war. They clearly knew she was a Hyuuga, it was pretty hard to mistake her eyes, but did they realise the significance of the prey in front of them? The guy behind her snickered. As if to answer her question he said, "Well, they aren't that good. She still led the Kazekage into our trap didn't she?" "Yoh…" the glass nin said in a light tone but with underlying warning that the other shinobi completely disregarded. Yoh just snorted. "She's going to die here anyway, who cares and we got our target heading straight into a trap. With this our mission will be finished before it really even started. How lucky of us to stumble onto our target so easily." Gaara had always been their target, huh? By the way the shinobi, Yoh, spoke they hadn't expected to come upon Gaara so suddenly but he was clearly their target. If they had attacked Sunagakure to get to Gaara more people may have been hurt but in the same token there would have been a better defence to keep him safe. She ground her teeth nervously, not sure which scenario was worse. "And with you, Kinshiro, his sand is useless," Yoh had continued not aware of Hinata's internal monologue. Hinata had heard enough. With the way this shinobi talked so brashly in front of his enemy either he was an overconfident rookie or he underestimated both Gaara's and her skills. They were both in range of her Hakke, taking the stance, she moved. She was not fast enough though, as the guy in front of her sunk back into the glass instantly disappearing out of her range. Unfortunately for Yoh, he wasn't as quick and as she instigated the jutsu, pushing thin lines of chakra out through the tips of her fingers and slicing through the dark haired shionbi behind her. The man quivered then dispersed into a shower of water. Shit! A clone? These guys had to be at least Jounin level to continuously fool her eyes. She would have to work harder on honing her skills. It was hard, resisting the urge to run. She was outnumbered and out ranked, not to mention she needed to get to Gaara, but her mind kept working through her options. If she left now they would surely just strike her down as she ran, and if she could at least reduce the numbers, maim one of them enough to be out of commission, than at least that was one less for Gaara to deal with. She was under no allusions that she would get out of this alive but her true mission had always been to protect the Kazekage and she would do it regardless of the results. She watched the shiny glass around her carefully. There! A slight ripple in the chakra lines as a hidden body moved within the confines of its hiding spot. Summoning chakra through her palm again she placed her hand over the ripple and pushed a thin line of blue straight down into the smooth surface, penetrating it and hitting her opponent. Instantly she jumped back, taking her stance again, as the missing nin was forced to dispel his stealth jutsu. It was the brown haired Yoh that appeared, his scarred face twisted in a scowl of pain. She had punched a hole straight downward, through his shoulder and down through his pelvis bone, cutting off chakra flow to the whole of the shinobi's left side and leaving puncture marks through his flesh. Damn it! She thought. She'd hoped to hit the other shinobi. If she'd gotten the other one his glass jutsu would have been dispelled and she had yet to see Yoh’s abilities whereas he knew of hers. This could end very badly. Even with a whole side paralysed, he was able to stand, placing all his weight on his right side, while blood dripped from his useless limbs. She hadn’t been able to push enough power into her jutsu to slice off the shinobi’s limbs properly. “Bitch,” he spat. “You’ll regret that.” With his good hand he pulled the paper parasol on his back and flicked it open in front of him. No way was he letting this bitch get the better of him. He gave the parasol a twist, spinning it in his hand. A spray of needles came speeding toward Hinata, but she was already moving, forming her chakra shield and deflecting the needles effortlessly. Seriously mad now, Yoh started forming seals with his good hand but this time Hinata didn't give him time to finish his jutsu – just because she didn’t know the extent of his skills didn’t mean she planned to find out. This time her hakke landed on the true body, creating shallow scratches all over it and sealing the chakra flow to his entire body. Yoh coughed up blood then pitched forward, unconscious. Hinata didn't give herself any time to gloat over her win. She instantly started searching for another ripple in the glass only to find the chakra had been withdrawn from the area. The other shinobi must have slipped off when she was fighting Yoh. Fear rose like bile in her throat and she headed back the way she came, leaving Yoh to bleed out on the glass. She was not about to let them complete their mission. *** Gaara paid no mind to the dark - after all, he'd known true darkness within himself when he'd been the host to the one tailed Shukaku. He just walked cautiously down the path and was rewarded when a dim light began to flicker in the distance. When he got closer he could see it was a candle lighting a small enclosed room. Expertly, Gaara cast an eye over the whole room before entering. The room lacked doorways, except for the one he’d just entered by and there were no windows either. Aside from the glass table in the centre of the room with its flickering candle and maps of Sunagakure strewn across it, the room was entirely bare. “Ninpou, Jourou Senbon.” Gaara spun to find the door he’d walked through was gone and a white haired shinobi stood in front of him, casting a jutsu . A crystaline umbrella appeared above Gaara’s head in the limited space and started spinning on its own, a rain of glass needles falling toward him, but as usual Gaara’s impenetrable defence came to his aid. Sand spilled out from his gourd and swirled around him to form a hollow ball. The needles imbedded uselessly into the sand. “Ooh, how beautiful,” Kinshiro grinned. “However…” He created some seals than called out carelessly. “Ninpou, Glass Solidify.” Instantly the sand around him changed to glass, still maintaining its shape so Gaara now stood in the middle of a glass bauble. Shit! Gaara thought, shocked at the loss of his weapon; this guy was the natural enemy of sand. “Shatter.” Before Gaara could get out, the bauble shattered into a million little shards of glass creating a beautiful shower of glitter. The force of the explosion sliced at Gaara body, creating minute tears in his clothes. If it wasn’t for the sand shield that covered his body he would have been bleeding all over. Kinshiro clapped vigourously. “What a beautiful show. Simply divine.” Gaara ignored him, feeling the pressure mount with this opponent. He had to make more sand if he was going to defend himself. Melting his gourd into sand he cast it at the glass nin. Before Kinshiro could turn it into glass, Gaara dispersed it around the rain shinobi. “Sandstorm. “ As it swirled around his enemy, Kinshiro’s voice drifted through the haze. “Oh, well this is cute, but how’s it gonna help you?” Using the sandstorm as a distraction Gaara knelt down to place his hands on the glass floor. Gathering his chakra he pushed it down past the glass into the sand underneath. “Desert Coffin,” he said. He could feel it move around at his will surrounding the glass room. “Desert Graveyard,” he mumbled, tightening a fist. He felt the sand tense in strangling pressure and expected to see the glass shatter around him. He was sorely disappointed though when nothing happened. The glass didn’t even bend or twist and not a scratch was left on the reflective surface. “Ahahaha!!” the shinobi in front of him threw his head back and laughed as the sandstorm died away. When he recovered he tapped the floor with his foot. “Do you like my chakra infused glass? It was designed for you after all. Even while you stand there, it’s leeching your chakra right out of your feet.” Dispelling the sand that clung to his body he hastily sent it under his feet, lifting himself several inches off the floor. Gaara still had a fair amount of chakra reserved but without being able to make more sand he was in serious trouble. He would have to take a gamble with the sand he had left and hoped it worked. “Still have some fight in you huh? But now you’re out of sa–” Kinshiro cut his sentence short, feeling the surge of power behind him. Turning, he found a wave of sand was about to crash down on him. Gaara had used the guys distracted taunting to gather the sand on the ground from his sandstorm attack to rise behind him. “Nice!” the Rain nin cried, not sounding a bit distressed. In fact he sounded positively jovial for a guy who was about to be crushed. With a few flicks of his wrist he tried to turn the wave into glass, but Gaara motioned with his hands, moving the wave out of the guys reach. He understood now. The glass nin could only change the sand with his hands, so all Gaara had to do was keep the sand behind him. “That won’t work either,” Kinshiro said. Even with Gaara moving his sand at top speed, Kinshiro was faster. Forming the necessary seals he caught the sand in his jutsu and instantly turned it to glass mid-air. “Now that you really are out of sand, I think I’ll leave the rest to Itoshiki...” In a panic, Gaara turned, sensing the presence of the second person. There, emerging from the glass wall came a shinobi, spinning a specifically patterned paper parasol in front of him. No needles came out of this one though; instead, as soon as Gaara had laid eyes on the flimsy spinning wheel, his head exploded in light, the genjutsu taking hold. When the light cleared the room began to literally melt around him. Looking down at his own hands he could see they were melting too. So real was the image, his mind registered the pain of it and he screamed in agony. *** Hinata arrived at a dead end - only it wasn’t a dead end. Her Byakugan could see the trappings of the genjutsu used to make it look like nothing was there. Without even breaking her stride she formed the seal for dispel. “Kai!” she said and the open doorway appeared in front of her. She could see Gaara standing stock still atop a bed of sand, caught up in a genjustu. It was not easy to confuse the Kazekage’s eyes, even a good genjutsu wouldn’t have easily broken the Godaime, which meant these guys were at ANBU level. Both assailants in the room were focused on their target. They didn’t even look back, assuming their team mate had gotten rid of Hinata. She didn’t give them time to realise their mistake. She came through the doorway at top speed, smashing a closed fist into the glass nin. She’d used so much chakra already so this was her compromise. It was lucky her Gentle Fist taijutsu had to utilise the speed and, to a degree, strength of normal taijutsu. She would never be as good as Rock Lee but her hit was still pretty affective. The poor glass nin had turned his head just in time to see the fist before it connected with his face. He went flying. As soon as his feet left the floor the whole room lost its chakra flow. He flew past the Kazekage and his team mate smashing into the glass wall and went straight through it. Itoshiki looked on helplessly. He wanted to aid his team mate but if he moved the genjutsu on the Kazekage would be dispelled. Hinata stopped by Gaara’s side, leaning up against the youth. She was surprised to see the room wasn’t square but in a lot of parts the glass was warped and strained, like something had been pushing on it from the other side. Meanwhile Kinshiro had extracted himself from the wall, unscathed, throwing away shards of glass that had shattered around him. “Kyaa!” he said jovially. “I haven’t been that surprised in a long time. So Yoh lost? I should have known. He was the weakest of us three, but don’t worry honey, I won’t repeat his mistakes.” Hinata registered what he said. There was only three of them, which meant if she could just disable these two… The man began to create seals, some Hinata recognised and others she did not and she hastily pulled up her shield, expanding it wide enough to cover both herself and Gaara. She winched involuntarily as pain coursed through her body, slowing her movements. Crystalline needles from the ground rose up, summoned by the glass user’s power and began their assault. He grinned manically, seeing the exhaustion on the young girls face before it disappeared behind the wall of blue. He knew it wouldn’t be long now before she wouldn’t be able to maintain that shield, whereas he still had about half his reserves left. Now that he was once again standing on his precious glass, he was able to directly leech the rest of chakra right from under her feet. Hinata could feel the chakra seeping away from her. She tried to maintain the shield but her chakra reserve was pretty much on empty and she’d never expanded her shield to protect more than one person before. Holes were beginning to appear in her defence, letting through a needle that sliced past her left cheek, than another that ripped past her on the right, leaving a hole in her shirt and another cut along the side of her ribcage. As the needles slowed, one more lodged itself in her left leg, just above the knee. Then the needles were gone and she relaxed her arm movements, falling to her right knee from exhaustion. Panting heavily, her eyes were cast to the ground and she braced herself against Gaara’s leg for support. “It’s over, little girl,” Kinshiro gloated. “Those needles are coated with a potent poison that will kill you in a matter of hours – well usually about one to two but in your condition, you’ll be lucky to survive twenty minutes. As for the Kazekage… Itoshiki has him bound tight. Amegakure will reinstate us if we bring them his body.” Hinata couldn’t move, which was lucky for the glass nin since she would have literally clawed the guys eyes out if she could. Instead, she used the opportunity to push the last ounce of chakra she had into Gaara’s leg, disrupting the flow of chakra enough to remove the genjutsu placed on him, before the poison started to clog her system and she keeled over, darkness taking her. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
