Author's note: Hi, everyone! If you are still reading this story thank you for sticking with me. I know it has been a very long time since I have updated this story, but I kind of fell out of writing for awhile when I hit a writer's block and had no idea what to do next. Now I think I finally broke through the block and I will be finishing this story. I will also be doing others! I have two more chapters of this story finished and I am already working on a third. Please enjoy. ^_^

Passing Notes 5
----------------------
It had rained all morning and it appeared it would start raining again later in the evening. Though for now the rain had ebbed and some brave merchants had put out their displays in the village market despite the dark clouds and distant ominous rumbles. The few shoppers avoided mud puddles as much as possible as they perused the items that were for sale.
Iruka carefully picked through the carrots in the bin. He knew from experience that they could not have any type of mark on them. If they did Naruto would not eat them. It was one of the many excuses the boy used to avoid any type of vegetables. If it had been his choice Iruka would not have ventured out of his apartment on such a dreary day, but he had promised Naruto that he would make him homemade Raman after his latest mission. Earlier then expected, the blond boy had gotten back the previous day and he was already hounding about the ramen. Iruka had happily smiled and congratulated Naruto before setting out to fulfill his cherished promise.
Iruka finally selected two perfect carrots and then a couple of handfuls of dried mushrooms. He moved on to the next vender where he started picking through a pile of fresh cabbages. When he settled on a nice leafy green head, he picked it up and a small neatly folded piece of white paper slid out from inside one of the outside leafs. Iruka easily grabbed the note as it tumbled towards the ground. He quickly paid the vender for his choice of cabbage and then started walking towards his home. Feeling that he was being watched, he glanced around himself and saw nothing out of the ordinary once again. He wished whoever was sending the notes would just reveal himself or herself, but he also loved the mystery about the whole ordeal and trying to guess who the person is. A smile touched his lips as he opened the small note.
I've learned not to get to attached. The smile slowly faded away from Iruka's face as he read the single line on the paper. He didn't even realize he came to a stop as he stared down at the paper in his right hand. This note was very sad, but still a very valuable clue. His secret admirer was a shinobi that has been in the ranks for a long time and has lost a lot of people in their life. One that does not form emotional attachments easily because the person doesn't want to be heartbroken again. A person that probably leads a very lonely and quiet life.Iruka could understand this sentiment so very well. He has had his share of emotional pain, but he couldn't live like that. He couldn't wall himself away from everyone and everything just to keep from getting hurt. He would slowly die from the inside out if all he had in his life was a job and a very quiet home. He would rather have memories of good times, smiles, happiness, just everything! Of life! No he couldn't live like that, in fact no one should have to live like that. If he ever figured out who his secret admirer was, he would show the person how to live again. That it is okay to have emotional attachments, even with the shadow of loss always looming in the background. It is better to have something to remember then to have nothing at all.
But hidden within the few words was another clue as well. This shinobi was fighting an internal battle with their-self and it was probably of epic proportions as well. Because despite all the pervious emotional pain, the many self made walls, and the distance always kept from other people the secret admirer was still becoming attached to him. Iruka didn't understand how or why this attachment was happening because he certainly didn't do anything to draw much attention to himself. He probably never would understand either, even if ever found out who his secret admirer was. It was a fact of life that shinobi tended to be very secretive, even with the people in their lives. That still didn't stop his heart from wanting to reach out to the lonely shinobi behind all the notes, no matter who the person was.
After all that analyzing, Iruka was still left with many, many possibilities of who his secret admirer was. Though the clue had helped narrow it down a bit more. The person was at least his age or older because anyone much younger wouldn't have experienced the amount of loss in their life as the note suggested. Certainly not the amount needed to detach one's self from everyone and everything in life. Unless of course your last name was Uchiha or Uzamaki, neither of which Iruka would ever entertain the idea of the identity of his secret admirer. It just was not happening!!
Iruka was knocked from his thoughts quite literally as he was ran into full force. He fought the very strong urge of palming a kunai and killing his 'attacker'. Somehow managing to stop the very ingrained instinct, Iruka slipped the now crumpled paper into a vest pocket as he turned around and smiled into happy, bright blue eyes.
"Iruka-sensei!! Iruka-sensei!! Are we going to go have the ramen you promised me now!!" The blond was bouncing in place, a huge grin stretching across his face, so very excited.
Iruka could not say no to him. A small laugh escaped his lips as he separated the bags in his left hand and held some out to the blond. "Yes, we are, Naruto. Help me carry the bags and follow me. Along the way to my apartment you can tell me all about your mission."
Naruto grabbed the couple of bags and fell into step at his former teacher's side, excitedly chatting away about his latest mission along with the happenings between himself, his teammates, and Kakashi-sensei. It was hard for Iruka to keep up with the boy's conversation, but he tried even though his mind kept wondering back to the small piece of paper he received. Later he would slip into his bedroom while Naruto watched the Raman cook and place the note on his dresser with the other notes. He would spare them a smile and a promise to himself to think about the mystery again later on when he was alone. He will figure out who his secret admirer is and then confront the person! Because now he wants to put a face and a name with the person behind the notes, a person who Iruka is also becoming very attached to.
