A/N: I’m so sorry that I haven’t updated in such a long time. Things in my life just kind of got busy and such. I really am sorry to you all. But, good news! Obviously I have another chapter on this story out to you guys. Please Enjoy! ********************************************************************************************************* “TEME!” He yelled. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chapter Five Sasuke stared in shock at the three massively long tables in the equally vast dining hall. As a prince, he was used to seeing gaping rooms that appeared far too large for their purposes, but this was still alarming. People whizzed passed him as they went to take a seat at the tables. Social class didn’t appear to matter as nobles sat next to servant’s children. Sasuke couldn’t believe his eyes; the entire castle seemed to have been invited. “You know, I wanted a round table originally so that no one was higher in status than anyone else. But, more and more people kept showing up so we had to get these big long tables to fit everyone.” Naruto supplied, leaning against the doorway with his arms crossed and a smirk on his face. Sasuke’s face was priceless. “Come on, you can sit by me.” Naruto said seeing Sasuke’s obvious distress at picking a place to sit. Taking his hand without much thought, Naruto led Sasuke to a seat near the end of the middle table before gently pushing Sasuke down by his shoulders into a chair. “I’ll be right back.” Naruto told him before disappearing through the doors leading into the kitchen. Sasuke wasn’t fast enough to reply and so he was left sitting uncomfortably in this foreign atmosphere. In his kingdom, dinner was a quiet event in the castle. Only Sasuke and his father, mother, and brother were present and there was seldom conversation. However here, it seemed that dinner was more like a celebration. People were chatting constantly and there were smiling faces all around. More accurately, everyone but the ones sitting around Sasuke was having a good time. Hinata sat to his right with Kiba to her right naturally, while Shikamaru was next to Kiba. Across from him was Kakashi and Iruka sat to Kakashi’s left, while Neji sat next to Iruka. By the way Naruto’s close friends were staring at him, Sasuke could tell that he was still not welcome in this place. For some reason, Sasuke was miffed by this. He had been here two weeks already and he had not done one thing that would be considered treacherous or scheming. By now, they should have trusted him enough not to peer at him with those judging gazes. The only one that showed a bit of faith between them was Hinata. Before there was even time to speak, Naruto busted through the kitchen doors with a large serving tray in his hands with a large roasted turkey upon it. “Dinner is served!” He announced happily as he set down the tray on one of the tables. Behind him, servants followed his lead and set down the bountiful feast on the tables where the people sitting immediately dug into the meal. Naruto bustled back and forth between the kitchen and the dining hall carrying and setting down tray after tray until finally everything was served and he sat back down next to Sasuke who was staring at him in disbelief. Princes, in his experience, did not serve food. In his country, only the servants handled food. Sasuke couldn’t believe what he was witnessing. Things were so different here, though by now he should have expected something like this. It seemed that nearly nothing was the same here as it was in his kingdom. It made him feel…homesick… “Come on, eat up.” Naruto nudged him, as he grabbed himself a roll and took a bite. Hesitantly, not used to this kind of environment, Sasuke followed suit and filled his plate. All through out dinner, while the other inhabitants of the castle were chatting away, Kakashi remained silent as he studied the young foreign prince. Finally, he opened his mouth and spoke. “Prince Uchiha, if I may ask who is running your country now? All of your family was killed so there would be no heir to take the throne.” Kakashi asked pointedly with narrowed eyes. He had been wondering for a while now why Sasuke had yet to ask of his country and the way it was fairing since the incident. Other than the supposed ‘murder’ of the royal family, there had been no news from Kumogakure. He was still suspicious of Sasuke. Naruto went to open his mouth to defend Sasuke, only to be cut off as the foreign prince answered. “That’s not correct actually. There was one Uchiha away from the castle when the attack happened. My second cousin Sai was staying on the outskirts of the imperial city training to become an artist. Either he is ruling now or if he refused there are regulations for such occasions.” Sasuke responded without pause for thought. He knew that his country was doing well even after the attack. Long ago there had been plans made if such a tragedy occurred. Although, he didn’t know how well a ruler Sai would turn out to be. He was a daydreamer and perverted without people skills. However, if he actually had refused, succession would fall to the chief of police, Ibiki Morino, if he remembered correctly. That was all assuming his brother hadn’t survived… His eyes fell downcast at that thought. He didn’t want to believe that his brother hadn’t survived that night. Sasuke wanted to hope that Itachi had gotten away from the castle before the fire had consumed it entirely. Sasuke wanted to believe that Itachi too was recovering somehow like he was. Looking down at his plate, he grimaced. Sasuke suddenly didn’t feel hungry anymore. Seeing the reaction, Naruto turned worried eyes upon the other prince. “Are you feeling alright?” He asked, concern lacing his voice. Knowing that there was nothing he could do about it, Sasuke reluctantly nodded. He had to get better. The faster he was free to leave, the faster he would find his brother and kill the treacherous bastard that had murdered his family. “Hn. Fine.” He replied, though he still didn’t touch his meal. Throughout the rest of dinner Sasuke didn’t speak more than a word or two in reply to whatever question or comment Naruto had directed toward him. All around him people were merry and talking up a storm, but he remained silent. His family had been murdered two weeks ago. Up until now, he hadn’t let himself relax and take that fact to heart. He was in a strange land with strange people. His thoughts were turned to surviving here, not to grieving for his family’s demise. But, as he let down his guard here and came to know this place better, that grief was beginning to consume him. He’d never see his family again. His mother’s smiles were lost. His father’s lectures of what it was to be a man had disappeared. His uncles, aunts, and cousins he had been accustomed to see daily were gone. And his brother, his role model, was probably dead as well. He’d never speak to any of them or hear their voices. Like shadows they disappeared at the first ray of light as if they had never been there in the first place. He felt hollow inside, freezing as if ice had pierced his heart and frozen it solid. Sasuke couldn’t help but think that this was what despair must have felt like. There was no hope for the dead. They were gone and could not come back. Sasuke had killed before; while hunting he had killed animals for both sport and food and on the battlefield he had taken the lives of many men. He was a soldier; he was accustomed to death. But this, it was different than seeing the life drain from a deer or watching an enemy fall dead before him. He felt such a gaping loss that if he stood now he was sure he would stumble and fall from the lack of strength he possessed from this crippling blow. His family, the people he saw and conversed with on a daily basis, his life essentially, were dead… And he remained…alone… Sasuke didn’t notice as the dinner died down or as people left to go home or return to their duties. Before long, no one was left, except himself and Naruto, in the large dining hall that was now eerily silent from the lack of people. Suddenly there was a soft touch on his shoulder and from the small contact, his face whipped around to see who was there. How had he forgotten so easily that he was here in this foreign land or better yet, how had he forgotten he had been having dinner not two hours ago? Instead of the bright overconfident smile he was used to seeing on the other’s face, Naruto’s expression was tender and knowing. He needn’t say any words, because Naruto knew what he was feeling. He was too proud though, to let Naruto comfort him as he probably planned to do. He would not feebly cry on the other’s shoulder because of his grief. He was stronger than that. However, Naruto didn’t lend his shoulder for Sasuke to cry on like Sasuke had expected from the other. Instead, Naruto held out a mug of steaming tea and Sasuke received it without another thought. He pulled out the chair next to Sasuke and sat facing him, giving him his full attention. “Tell me about them, your family.” Naruto said, taking a sip from his own mug. Sasuke was quiet for a moment unsure if he should divulge anything about his family. He wasn’t worried about spreading secrets. But, did Naruto deserve to know? He hadn’t known them while they were alive. Did he really deserve to know them now that they were dead? He’d never meet them, see them, or hear them. Whatever Sasuke said would be as Naruto knew them from then on. That was how they would be remembered. Sasuke’s words alone would describe these people, his family, that were dead and could not speak on their own behalf. Looking into his tea, Sasuke let out a sigh. “What do you want to know?” Sasuke asked, looking back up at the ever patient crown prince in front of him. In all his years of life, he had never known anyone like him. Naruto was purely unique like a snowflake against a black pane of glass. A small and caring smile upturned Naruto’s lips and he relaxed back in his seat readying himself for a long tale. “Everything.” He said with absolute certainty. Hesitating for a moment, Sasuke let go his last resistance as he thought back to his family. Naruto wanted to know everything. So, he’d tell him everything he could so that their memory could live on not just in him, but perhaps in Naruto as well. But, how he wished they were still here with him… “My father’s name is Fugaku Uchiha. He was the king of my country since my grandfather passed away when my father was thirty…” Sasuke continued on talking about everything he could think of that concerned his family or his country. He didn’t remember exactly how long he stayed there in the empty dining hall talking, but by the time he had stopped his throat was sore and the sun had risen hours before. Naruto, all the while, remained mostly quiet commenting on the some parts, but mainly he took in all of the information as an eager listener and by the end he learned far more than he could have ever hoped about the mysterious man he had saved two weeks prior. There were no tears shed during the entire affair. During some stories Sasuke and Naruto even laughed. This wasn’t about drudging up sad feelings and displaying them. This was about talking and sharing about those who had passed. And somehow, that worked just as well as crying on someone’s shoulder. There was still grief. For years to come, Sasuke would still feel that grief of losing his family, but this allowed him to start to grieve for them. It was a good start. At the end, Naruto and Sasuke stood and walked to Sasuke’s room together in silence. But, just as Sasuke opened his door to retire, Naruto did something unexpected. He embraced him warmly. All breath left Sasuke’s body as he felt Naruto’s warm arms wrap around him. For the first time since he had arrived in this foreign land, Sasuke felt safe… “Thank you for telling me about them. I am so sorry that they’re gone.” Naruto whispered to him. It was only at that point did Sasuke’s first tear fall. The action was so warm and inviting he almost didn’t want to let it go. However, before he could return the gesture, Naruto had let go and was already walking down the hall. Sasuke watched in silence as Naruto disappeared into the dark shadows that still lingered in the depths of the castle this early in the morning. Cheerful and childish mostly and strong and serious at rare times such as these, Naruto was more of a mystery than Sasuke could ever hope to be. And with that, Sasuke laid back on his bed and stared at the vaulted ceiling. There he lied for hours, unable to sleep, as his tears fell silently. He couldn’t stop them. The floodgate had already been opened. He just had to let them go and that’s what he did until he eventually fell asleep from his exhaustion. Even as he closed his eyes that final time, he found he was still crying for the precious people he had lost…his family… ~*~ Time is a strange fickle thing. On its own accord it will either slow or race by without so much as a tender warning to those it affects. This was the case for Sasuke as he blinked and in a flash it seemed a month had gone by from that night he had cried for his family. He had grown used to the ways and the people that lived here. The air was hot and thick with humidity as summer came into full force. And although Sasuke, still a novice to the new heat that arose in this land, found himself on more than one occasion sitting in the garden that Naruto’s mother had cultivated years ago and breathing in deeply the air that rested on this place. This place wasn’t his home. It was too warm. The cool crispness of the breeze that would have been easily felt against his skin in his kingdom was hidden under the heavy humidity. The thick clouds that usually lessened the sun’s heat were instead white wisps here. The fresh fragrance of rain in the almost constant mist that blanketed his land that he had grown up with only existed here after a rainfall. All other times, the smell of wood and foreign wild flowers floated through the air. The servants played friendly games and chatted happily, while they did their chores around the castle, whereas in his kingdom the chores were done mostly in silence. The castle was decorated with large colorful paintings and tapestries depicting forests, animals, past royal family members, and even battles. His own castle did not have such adornments. No, this place where he was forced to stay until his recovery was nothing like his home. However, that wasn’t such a terrible thing he supposed. Perhaps, in the long run it could have even been for the best. Standing with much difficulty from his bed, Sasuke limped his way out of his room and went in search of Naruto. It was much too stuffy in his room that day to just sit around and do nothing. Naruto was always entertaining. Perhaps, if he found the dobe he’d be able to stave away some boredom. If he was at full strength, he’d be training right now, but alas his wounds were still far from being healed. It’d be a slow process he was told by their head healer Tsunade. Every few weeks they’d heal him some more and then allow his body to adjust and heal by itself before another round of healing began. Sasuke understood, but he didn’t want to accept the news. He wanted to be out in the world tracking down that murderous retch. But his plans had to wait it seemed. He’d get nowhere with his body the way it was now. Finding his way to Naruto’s study, Sasuke didn’t even pause as he opened the door and let himself in. He was a prince; there was no need to knock. From behind a large pile of papers on the desk, Sasuke spotted a stock of blonde hair poking out. At the sound of the door opening, Naruto peeked up from his paperwork and smiled brightly when he saw it was Sasuke at the door. It had taken awhile, but it appeared that perhaps Sasuke was starting to settle into his new environment here. Naruto was glad for this. “Oh, Sasuke. Did you need something?” Naruto asked as he stood up from his chair and stretched his arms over his head. Sasuke shook his head and casually took a seat by the window. This wasn’t the first time he had come into the study when Naruto was working. He never said much, but rather just enjoyed the company of the loud blonde. It was better than sitting alone in the library. A small almost secret smile appeared on Naruto’s face as he watched Sasuke get comfortable in his seat. It was nice to see that Sasuke could relax sometimes and didn’t permanently have that scowl on his face. They didn’t speak to one another during this time. Sasuke calmly read his book or stayed reserved in his own thoughts, while Naruto on the other hand had a wide range of emotion from boiling anger to bubbling happiness depending on what he was working on for his country. This silent exchange lasted for hours until the sun was setting and the large stack of paperwork on Naruto’s desk had dwindled down to nothing. Stretching his arms over his head, Naruto flopped back against his chair in exhaustion. He stood and took a seat in the chair across from Sasuke. Sneaking a glance over at Sasuke, Naruto watched as he flipped a page in his book completely relaxed. Bandages still covered most of his body, his posture was slouched due to his back injury, and his leg was still busted to the point where Sasuke limped every time he walked. Naruto wondered just how Sasuke had looked before this. He was a soldier he had found out; did that mean that his posture was like that of one of his knights? Had he walked perfectly before his leg had twisted and nearly broken? He hoped that none of Sasuke’s injuries were permanent. It wouldn’t be fair after all that had happened. “Say, Sasuke, what do you do for fun?” Naruto asked suddenly. He couldn’t pin down what kind of child Sasuke must have been. The adventurous type that always got in trouble? The quiet child that liked his privacy? The momma’s boy? With him just sitting there reading a book with absolutely no expression, it was hard to tell. Peeking up from his book, Sasuke raised an eyebrow in question. “What do you mean?” Naruto adjusted himself in his chair, flinging his legs over the arm rest to get more comfortable. “What do you mean, what do I mean? It’s a simple question Sasuke. What do you do for fun? You did have fun in your country, didn’t you?” Naruto commented, poking fun at him. Sasuke’s scowl returned, not amused at the attempted joke. He flipped another page in his book. “Of course I did.” He said flatly, his eyes scanning over the words on the page. Naruto waited for a few moments to see if he was going to elaborate. When it was clear he wasn’t, Naruto sighed and shook his head. Getting up from his chair suddenly, he grabbed the book from Sasuke’s hand, flipped the corner down to mark the page and tossed it onto his chair. “Come on.” Naruto said, reaching out a hand to the disgruntled man. Sasuke looked at him questioningly. “What?” He asked rather annoyed that his book was gone. He had been enjoying it. “Come on! We’re going to have some fun,” Naruto explained “Right now.” Sasuke didn’t look convinced at all. Rolling his blue eyes at him, Naruto pulled Sasuke from his seat and began to back his way out of the room with a huge smile on his face and a twinkle in his eyes. “You know how to play hide and seek right?” Naruto asked as he neared the door. Sasuke crossed his arms over his chest and scuffed. “Of course I do, idiot.” Naruto’s smile only grew. His hand touched the door knob behind him and he stopped for but a moment. “Then count to ten and come find me!” He said suddenly before he flew out of the room like a bat out of hell. Sasuke could hear his fast footfalls down the hall as he stood there completely dumbfounded. “What?” The foreign prince found himself asking no one before he sighed and looking mournfully at his tossed aside book. “One…Two…Three…” He began grudgingly. There was no helping it when it came to Naruto. *************************************************************************************************** That’s all for this chapter. Please Review!
