Chapter 5 Sasuke dropped Naruto off at work and said he’d be there later to pick him up. The rest of the morning had been pretty quiet, Naruto didn’t know where to start so he didn’t, but before he’d gotten out of the car he’d told Sasuke that they needed to talk, really talk, and Sasuke had agreed. Monday’s are always hell in a coffee shop. Everyone that comes in looks like they have a weekend hangover and they’ll die if they don’t get their coffee right then. He’s grateful that he doesn’t work the morning rush… ever. Kakashi handles most of it with Sakura sometimes helping out. His shift started slow at 11am with the late morning stragglers, but there was a lot of cleaning to do from the morning rush so he kept his mind off of earlier with menial tasks until the after lunchers arrived. After lunch on Monday’s is almost as bad as mornings because people are still dragging by then even after their tenth cup so Naruto found a quiet corner just before 2 to take his break. He sat in the booth all the way in the back and leaned his head against the cushion. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath trying to get his thoughts in order when he heard the bell on the door ring. Sakura’s voice welcomed the customer so Naruto let himself slip back into his thoughts. A few moments later he felt the air shift and heard someone sit across from him. He opened his eyes, and froze. He didn’t know whether to run or call for help. Neither seemed to be the best option at that point, but Naruto couldn’t see, after what Shikamaru had told him, how he could sit and have a rational conversation with Itachi Uchiha. “The girl that took my order said you were on break. I thought I’d join you for a moment.” Kindness after such strong insults the last time they’d met didn’t sit right with Naruto. He sat up slowly and tried to look more confident than he felt. His eyes drifted around the room and he noticed three other men within sight that seemed too stiff to be casually getting a cup of coffee. The man had brought goons just to talk to him. This couldn’t be good. “I don’t think we have anything to talk about.” Itachi leaned back casually and smirked. “Ahh, but we do Naruto Uzumaki. You see, Sasuke is my little brother and it’s my job to look out for him whether he likes it or not. My brother likes to make a habit of breaking the rules. Father has been very patient for years with Sasuke. He’s allowed him to make his own way in the world, afforded him the independence he seemed to need as a young man to find his own success and power. The problem is, young Naruto, that Sasuke isn’t really free to make all the decisions he’s making and you, I’m afraid are one of those decisions.” Naruto could see why Sasuke didn’t want to talk about his family. If this man were his brother he wouldn’t talk to him either. He really had a way with beating around the bush. “Can you just come out and say it so we can be done here. You seem like the kind of guy that likes to play with people before you stomp them into the ground. I think it would be better for both of us if you could just cut to the chase. I may be young, but I’ve known people like you all my life, and I’m not playing your game so if you have something to say, say it, otherwise… leave.” Naruto’s heart was pounding so hard he was sure it could be heard by every living being in the building, but he was proud of himself anyway. He said what he needed to say without squeaking or sounding like an imbecile. Itachi tapped his fingers on the table a few times like a nervous habit that someone does when they’re thinking, and then smiled. From what Naruto could tell it was a genuine smile and he had to fight the impulse to return it. “You’re a very smart kid, Naruto, I’ll give you that. I think I’m really starting to like you. I can see what Sasuke sees, but it doesn’t matter what I think. Sasuke has family responsibilities that he can’t leave behind. Did you know he’s married?” Naruto gasped and looked down at the table. His hand was pressing against the surface to keep him from falling over as those five words played over and over in his head. Sasuke was married. He’d given himself to a married man. He was a home wrecker. He was so lost in thought that he missed the next few things Itachi said. “…lives in Japan and is…” Naruto’s head snapped up, “Wait, what was that…” Itachi sighed and started again. “Her name is Temari and she is going to school at Tokyo University. She lives in Japan and is from a prominent family that will not be happy if they find out about this. Father was willing to put up with Sasuke’s minor rebellions until he realized there was no escaping his obligations, but his success has made him think that he’s free of those obligations. The job was something my father could over look. I’m afraid you are not. He has never spent so much time pursuing anyone before, and we are all concerned that things could get serious. That would be a problem for you. The kind of problem you won’t recover from. I am here to make you an offer. You moved once and left everything behind. It shouldn’t be hard to do so again. I hear New York is beautiful in the spring…” “I don’t understand…” Was all Naruto could get out before Itachi slid an envelope across the table to him. He reached for it slowly as if it would explode in his face, and opened it to see a crisp cashier’s check with several sets of zeros on it. Two million dollars was a lot of money, but Naruto had never had more than a few hundred at a time so that kind of money was incomprehensible to him. He slowly closed the envelope and set it on the table in front of him. This money would probably support him for the rest of his life if he was careful with it. He could have a house and a nice car and all the normal things he’d always wanted when he was young. None of those things matter as much as having people care about him did though, and he’d not just be leaving behind Sasuke. He’d be leaving behind Shikamaru and Kiba and all the other friends he’d made here. He’d have to start all over again. He couldn’t do that. “I don’t want your money.” He pushed the envelope across the table. Itachi made no move to take it back. He looked as though he wanted to say something, but Naruto beat him too it. “I won’t see Sasuke anymore. He’s married, and even if he’s not happy in that marriage he still made the commitment and I won’t be with someone that would break that kind of vow. I’m sorry you wasted your time here.” Itachi stared at him for a long time in silence. It was uncomfortable to be scrutinized so soundly by those intense black eyes. It was a relief when he nodded and put the envelope back into a pocket on the inside of his coat. He stood up and Naruto did the same. They looked each other in the eye for a long moment, and then Itachi turned to leave. Naruto just couldn’t leave it like this though. “Just so you know Itachi Uchiha, your money wouldn’t have done any good if he wasn’t married. I would have told your father to his face to go fuck himself. No one deserves to be told what to do with their life, and no one deserves that kind of power over someone else. You can tell your father, from me that he’s an asshole for treating someone he’s supposed to love like they’re a possession.” Itachi turned and smirked in a very Sasuke like fashion that Naruto used to like. “I’ll make sure your message is relayed… I’ve wanted to say it myself for years, but I’m afraid there might be consequences to me telling him what you’ve said. Are you sure you’re willing to accept them?” Naruto just nodded and went back to work. He heard the door bell ring as the room emptied. The silence was broken suddenly by a sniffle and a whimper behind the counter. He looked down to see Sakura on the floor crying quietly and shaking like a leaf. “Sakura, what’s wrong?” Naruto asked as he dropped to his knees beside her. She looked up at him with tear filled sage eyes. Her lips trembled as she whispered to him. “Oh Naruto. They’ll kill you for saying those things. That man is dangerous and you just insulted his father.” She threw her arms around his neck and sobbed harder. “I don’t want them to hurt you…” Naruto didn’t have a reply so he just sat with her and held her as she wept. It was done, and now all there was left to do was wait. ooOOoo Naruto didn’t meet Sasuke’s eyes for the full three hours he waited in the coffee shop. Naruto’s shift was ending soon, and he was dreading the confrontation that was inevitable, but it had to be done. He would not be in a relationship with a man that was married to some young unsuspecting girl half way across the world. He cleaned quickly as the last of his customers left, and locked the door behind them. He set about his usual closing chores with practiced ease and finished quickly. Sasuke was brooding by the time he made it to the corner booth. He sat down across from the dark haired man, and thought for a moment that it was just this morning that he’d actually thought about the possibility of falling for him. That was all over now; all that was left was to tell him. “Your brother was here this afternoon.” That got his attention, and the sulk instantly turned to barely contained rage. “What did he say?” Sasuke practically snarled. Naruto couldn’t contain the flinch at his tone and noticed that Sasuke instantly relaxed a little and reached out for him. Naruto leaned away though and put his hands in his lap to keep them out of reach. “He said you’re married. He tried to pay me off to not see you anymore. I told him he didn’t have too. I won’t be with someone that would do something like that.” Naruto took a deep breath and finally looked Sasuke in the eyes. “I think you should go.” “NO!” Sasuke instantly pulled himself back together and let his tone become more reasonable. “I’m not married Naruto. My father arranged a marriage for me when I was only three with the newborn daughter of one of his associates. I never consented to the marriage, and I never signed anything, but in the old families that doesn’t matter. When I turned eighteen my father signed the papers and it was done. She was only fifteen for fuck sake, and I can’t get a divorce because it’s a lifetime contract, a business contract. I’ve never even met her, and I’m sure she feels the same about the whole thing as I do. I will not stand by and lose the only person I’ve ever felt this way about because of some piece of paper signed by men who live in a different world. I will not follow their rules and I will not let them control me.” Naruto didn’t know what to say. Sasuke’s admission though vague warmed him and broke his heart at the same time. Was he lying to get what he wanted or was he telling the truth? It seemed like the kind of thing his father would do if what Itachi had said was anything to go by, but this was just too much for him to deal with. “I still can’t see you anymore. I’ll probably be dead by the end of the week if not sooner. I told Itachi to tell your father some very rude things, and I’m sure he won’t like it. I think it would just be better in the long run if you just let me end it here…” “Please Naruto.” Sasuke’s eyes were pleading. The rest of him was composed and looked ready for anything, but his eyes were deep black pools of pain and sorrow. Naruto thought he must have been dealing with this kind of thing for years, and felt pity for him for the first time. It had to be awful having someone else always trying to ruin your life. “Please Naruto…” he said again, and this time when he reached out Naruto held his hand. “I don’t know what you said, but whatever it was I’m sure he deserved it. I can protect you from him. I’ve dealt with this kind of thing before and I can handle myself. I would never allow you to be hurt because of me. My father just doesn’t know how to let go, and I think it’s time he learned.” Naruto wanted to believe that this was happening. He wanted to believe that the man in front of him was capable of standing up to the most dangerous of men and coming out intact, but he’d been around the mob before. Just because it was called a different name didn’t mean that they did things any differently, and Naruto knew what happened when the son of one of these underground gods was rumored to be gay. It might not be a physical punishment Sasuke receives, but whatever it was it would hurt him or they would find something that would. Sasuke seemed like a worldly kind of man, but Naruto could tell right then that he had no idea what those men were capable of. One way or another, this would end badly and he didn’t want to end up a badly written made for TV movie. “I need to think about this. I’m going home, just give me a few days. If things change you can call me.” Naruto pulled his hand away from Sasuke and started to stand up, but before he could go anywhere, Sasuke was on him. The kiss was demanding and possessive. It was all the things Naruto wanted and now realized he couldn’t have. He needed to go home. He pushed Sasuke away, and walked to the front door. He unlocked it and held it open for Sasuke without looking at him. “This isn’t over Naruto.” He put his hand up to hold the door open, and Naruto took the opportunity to take off the pendant he’d not taken off since he’d received it. “No Naruto. I bought it for you. I want to see it on you.” Naruto nodded once and let his hands fall back to his side. He wanted to keep it. It would remind him to not want things he couldn’t have. Sasuke left then without saying anything else. Naruto locked back up and headed home. He needed to talk to Shikamaru. ooOOoo “You said what?” “I told Itachi to tell his father to go fuck himself…” Now that he thought about it a little more he realized it was probably a bad idea to provoke such a dangerous man, but there wasn’t anything to do about it now. “That was a pretty stupid thing to do Naruto, but there’s nothing for it now. I don’t think he’ll do anything to you as long as you stay away from Sasuke though. He won’t want to push his son away any more than he already has. He’s been trying to force Sasuke back to him for years and killing you would make that impossible. I don’t see why he would want to though. He has Itachi after all, and he’s the perfect son, daddy’s little psychopath. He’s married to a little demure Japanese girl too, and he’s already given his dad a grandson. I think he’s just trying to prove a point with Sasuke. He doesn’t like being disobeyed.” Shikamaru sighed loudly and leaned back in his chair crossing his arms behind his head. “What I can’t believe is that you turned down a 2 mil pay off check to come back to this hole in the wall.” Naruto glared at Shikamaru, but all he got was a laugh for his effort. He was loosing his edge. “I didn’t want their blood money.” Shikamaru laughed again “you’re starting to sound so cliché Naruto. Lighten up. I’ve lived my whole life with these people. They’re bad, but they’re nothing like they are in the movies. Even Sasuke’s game is beyond ridiculous. They stay quiet and live behind the scenes, that’s how they survive. No gun fight at the OK Corral here, sorry to disappoint.” Naruto had to laugh then. He’d been thinking in bad movie cliché’s all night, and to have Shikamaru guess so accurately was a little embarrassing. “I’m gonna go to bed. If ninja’s slip in my window tonight and slice me up you can have my last paycheck. It’s in the back of my sock drawer in the only pair of black socks I have.” “I already found it baka. How do you think I’ve been paying for my fancy wardrobe?” “What, those ripped up jeans and ratty old sweatshirts. No wonder I didn’t notice anything missing. You couldn’t have spent more than a few pennies on those old rags.” “It’s all you had. That’ll teach me to steal from someone that works in a coffee shop.” Naruto smiled as he turned the corner into his bedroom. The usual banter was a relief after the seriousness of the day, and he was grateful for having such a good friend. ooOOoo Sasuke came in for an hour every day. His looks were filled with heat and lust most of the time and made Naruto squirm as he tried to stay focused on his job. They didn’t speak and Naruto barely looked at him. A month came and went. It was as if time was standing still for him, but moving on for everyone else around him. When Itachi showed up it was the same time as he had before with several large men in tow, Naruto thought the worst. It was a Friday, and Naruto had been looking forward to a day off, but that was the last thing on his mind now. Itachi motioned for Naruto to join him, and Naruto noticed a new man standing in front of the door this time that he probably missed the last. It was obvious there wouldn’t be any customers until Itachi left so he went ahead and sat down with his own cup of coffee in the same place he had before. “My father wasn’t to happy to hear what you had to say Naruto. He’s a patient man, but he’s rapidly loosing it when it comes to you.” Naruto narrowed his eyes. “I can’t control what Sasuke does or where he goes. If he comes here for coffee and maybe makes me a little miserable in the process I can’t help that.” Itachi looked at him hard. His eyes were like dark crystal that seemed to suck the very light out of the room. They were so different from Sasuke’s it was shocking. “No one can control my little brother Naruto. I think his rebellion should be proof enough of that, but what about him coming here could possible make you miserable?” Naruto tried to glare at him, but it was no use. “I miss him…” He whispered, hoping his slip hadn’t been heard. Itachi’s smile revealed that he had heard, but it wasn’t the reaction he’d been expecting. “Do you love my little brother Naruto?” “NO…” Naruto coughed and cleared his throat. “I mean, no. I barely know him at all. All of this is more than I can handle is all, and I wish he’d just let it go so we can move on.” “But you know that’s not going to happen don’t you. I’m starting to wonder if you’re really that good or if this is just some petty game he’s playing. I think you’re good. I think you fucked my brother so good you’re all he can think about.” Naruto blushed so hard he thought his nose might start bleeding at any moment. It had only been the one time, and it had been incredible for him, but Sasuke hadn’t said anything about it and Naruto hadn’t thought to ask. Itachi laughed quietly at his blush and relaxed a little in his seat. He took a drink of the coffee he’d gotten before he sat down and looked over Naruto again. “I can see the appeal. I don’t swing that way, but you are an attractive young man. My brother has always had impeccable taste.” “Why are you here? Did you just come to embarrass me or did you actually have a reason.” “I have a reason, but I wanted to make sure I was reading the situation correctly. I really am starting to like you kid, and you make my brother happy. He hasn’t smiled for years, and then one day I see him and he’s smiling. Just day’s before Christmas so I start to check out where he’s spending his time and what he’s doing and what do I see? Sasuke leaving a gift for a blond boy that works in a coffee shop. Later I take a closer look and see that he’s given that boy a luck charm that is worth more than all the things this boy owns put together and I start to think my brother has a crush. I like seeing my little brother happy you know, but this is a direct affront to my father’s control over his youngest son, and he has to reassert his power over him. No more smiles, and I have a serious problem with that. I’ve spoken to my father as I said before, and I told him what I think of all this as well. I am happy to say that you will be surviving for the foreseeable future. I’ve assigned shadows to ensure it.” Naruto looked shocked. This was all too much to take in all at once. “Wha…” “I need you to understand me Naruto. I need you to see what my brother means to me. There have been issues in the past that were out of my control and I lost him because of it. I will do anything… anything to make him happy, even if it’s going against our father to do so. My father and I don’t see eye to eye on this and I’m taking your life into my hands. I will make sure that no harm, accidental or otherwise, comes to you. You may see my brother as much as you like, and by all means, give him your heart if that is what you desire. I feel a kinship with you that I’ve never felt with anyone else before. We both care for Sasuke and his unhappiness makes us unhappy. I can see it in the way you look at him every evening when he comes in, and I won’t stand around and do nothing when I’m capable of changing things. I’m assuming that my brother has informed you of his marital situation and how it doesn’t truly count as a marriage?” Naruto clinched his fists for a moment at how brazen Itachi was about what he’d said before. He didn’t like being lied too, and twisting the truth to suit your own needs was the same thing as a lie as far as he was concerned. He knew it wouldn’t do any good to say anything about it though so Naruto just nodded and let Itachi continue. He didn’t have enough self control to reply with words. “Just so long as we understand each other. The shadow that follows you will not interfere with your life unless it is necessary. I will speak to you again if any other details come to light that I think you should know about. Until then, I think we should end things here. Tell my brother I said hello and to enjoy his reprieve.” Itachi left then. Unfortunately he didn’t feel any better now than he had before. The shop was empty save one man in the corner wearing a pair of sunglasses and a coat that was way too heavy for the weather. When Naruto looked in his direction he pulled his glasses down and winked before pushing them back up again. It was strange to have someone watching him work mainly because no one had other than Sasuke since he’d started here. When he made his way over to the table the man introduced himself only as Shino before going back to the book in his hands. Naruto couldn’t tell if he was actually reading it or not and didn’t really care either way. After a long time of standing around, confused about the turn his life had just taken, Naruto had to force himself to get back to work. It would be a long afternoon before Sasuke showed up, and Naruto had to figure out what to say before he did.
