So my sister pointed out a major problem to me in this story and that’s the fact that Jiraiya is still alive. To be fair I didn’t know he died but I’ll do my best in this chapter to try and fix that problem but since this isn’t exactly following the Naruto storyline and no one else pointed it out to me in the reviews I'm guessing you guys didn’t really mind anyway. Also thanks to the review I got last chapter I now know what canon is as well as fanon which is a word I had never even heard before. *** “God damn it Granny Tsunade, this isn’t fair. Why can’t you get someone else to do this?!” Shouted Naruto as he sat across from the Hokage in her office, glaring at the mission scroll she had just assigned him with as if he could somehow cause it to burst into flames and crease to exist. Tsunade narrowed her eyes at the glaring shinobi, “you’ve been bugging me for a proper mission for almost longer than I can remember Naruto and this is a proper mission. ANBU guard criminals all the time and Neji really needs someone to spell him,” the Hokage knew it was a low blow using the Hyuga prodigy as an excuse to get Naruto to do what he was told but she really wanted him out of her office so she could get all her overdue work done, “he’s been on duty for fifteen hours straight and everyone else is already lined up for other missions so you’re really the only one who can help me give him some time off right now.” “You’ve only been in ANBU for a little over two weeks Naruto and it’s still just a trial,” Tsunade informed him, trying to use logic that was most likely bouncing right back at her off the young man’s thick skull, “I know this is a difficult thing to ask you or but if you do well in this it can only reflect well upon you.” Naruto crossed his arms and pouted while still looking at the mission scroll on the desk as if it were going to grow teeth and bite him and just as Tsunade was bracing herself for the other blondes next explosive protest he surprised her by snatching up the scroll and stalking out of her office, putting his ANBU mask on as he went and making sure his hood was up to hide his ears. Once out of the Hokage building Naruto let his rage fly, cursing everything curseable and yelling at random inanimate objects until he got all of the anger out of his system. It would do no good for him to lose it during his mission and give Tsunade and the new council a reason not to allow him to continue his duties as a member of ANBU. He’d worked hard to get where he was and wasn’t going to jeopardise his new position for anyone, not even for his former best friend. *** Sasuke regarded his opponent quietly, listening to the soft clunk of the bamboo water fountain out in to garden and the melodious chirping from a family of birds that had come to rest in the cherry blossom trees that his mother had planted many years ago when he was a child. It’s nice to see life back in the district again; Sasuke thought with a small internal smile, birds haven’t nested here since the massacre and after when there was no one here but me and the darkness. Maybe it’s a sign that peace is finally returning to this place and that the darkness is beginning to lift. I hope the same can be said for myself. The wooden clink of a shogi piece being moved and placed back down on the board brought the raven out of his contemplative thoughts and he looked down at the game, dark eyes widening a little at what he saw awaiting him on the board. “Checkmate,” there was a smirk in the soft voice of his ANBU guard that the raven couldn’t see due to the mask but never the less Sasuke knew it was there. The raven sighed and began to reset the board so they could finish the last game of their best out of three matches, “I didn’t even see that one coming.” “Perhaps if you had been paying attention then you would have, but at least the last game won’t be useless now. I often find that, that is the case when I play best out of three with Shikamaru. Playing the last game without having reason to can be tedious,” the ANBU guard stretched and couldn’t help the yawn that escaped him or the contented sigh as he stretched his tired muscles and they relaxed, joints popping loudly, “I just hope I can stay awake to finish the last game.” Sasuke nodded his understanding and sat back and crossed his legs once the board was reset and poured his guard some more tea while the other young man considered his first move and no doubt a few of the moves that would come after it. Some might say that a quick game was a good game but Sasuke had never seen the logic in that saying and his ANBU guard was of much the same mindset. Even the smallest of moves could have an impact on one’s strategy so it was important to treat everyone as significant and you couldn’t do that if you were rushing. Besides if one has time to stop and think about their strategy then why not take it? However as his guard finally decided on his first move and his course of action from that point onward and went to move his piece the pair was interrupted by a swirling of leaves in the garden as another ANBU in a slightly modified uniform arrived in to finally relieve the other. No one said anything for a few moments as the new comer continued to stand outside with his arms crossed defiantly, the atmosphere that had been calm only mere moments ago now as taught as a bow string. “You’re playing shogi? I thought we were meant to be guarding him, not playing stupid games and entertaining him,” the new ANBU guard said with a growl in his voice, clearly not enjoying the situation already. “We had to do something to pass the time,” the first ANBU said with an edge to his voice, not liking that the other was judging him, “do you know how long I’ve been here?” The new ANBU’s shoulders slumped and his arms fell to his side as if he had deflated, “I know, Tsunade told me that you’ve been here for about fifteen hours. I'm sorry that I snapped at you, go home and get some rest okay.” The first ANBU shook his head slowly, “go and tell Tsunade that I'm not leaving, you shouldn’t have to be here if you don’t want to Naruto,” the ANBU winced slightly as he slipped up on one of the most basic rules of the ANBU and revealed Naruto’s name. Was he really that tired or was it because as soon as Naruto showed up he had forgotten all about the Uchiha. Sasuke’s head shot up at the mention of the blondes name and he stared at the new ANBU in disbelief. Naruto was a member of ANBU? When had that happened and when had the blonde learnt to hide his chakra signature so well that Sasuke couldn’t tell who he was behind the mask that was a cat rather than a fox like he had thought it would have been. “I’ll be alright Neji, I just have to guard him is all,” Naruto stepped up onto the veranda and held out a gloved hand to Neji to help him to his feet, “besides if your dead on your feet then who will train with me once we finally get some time off?” Neji removed his mask with a chuckle, “not all of us have your stamina Naruto,” turning to Sasuke Neji gave the raven a hard look that said far more than his words, “there’s no getting out of it I suppose, we’ll have to finish our last game some other time.” The raven nodded but otherwise remained silent, running through the simple message Neji had given to him through their eye contact, you hurt Naruto and I will kill you myself. The message was simple really and not too difficult for the Uchiha to interpret, it wasn’t the first time that such a look had been directed at him. Sasuke watched, a little annoyed by the fact that the pair had seemingly forgotten him, as Neji took Naruto’s hand and the blonde pulled him up and into a quick hug. Neji moved to leave then but turned back to ask Naruto one last time if he was okay or not only to have the blonde start making shooing noises at him as he pushed him gently into the garden so he could teleport away without breaking anything. Naruto stood there for a few moments staring at the place where the Hyuga had just been, watching as the leaves that had been stirred up by his departure settled again, all the while trying not to grind his teeth as he felt Sasuke’s gaze burning holes in the back of his head. He didn’t want to be there and he suspected that there was a part of Sasuke that didn’t want him there either but he had to admit that it really could have been a lot worse. All he had to do was guard the stupid arse right? There was no rule that said he had to talk to him or even be visible, he was perfectly capable of keeping an eye on Sasuke from the trees that surrounded the Uchiha compound. “Do you want to come in?” The quiet question startled Naruto and he turned around so fast that he thought he might have just given himself whiplash, “No I don’t want to come in, I want to be finished with guarding you and then get back to doing more important things.” Sasuke pursed his lips at the dobe’s rude tone but nodded. Of course Naruto wasn’t ready to talk to him yet; it was foolish of him to think otherwise. What he needed to do was take a page out of Neji’s book and wait for the blonde to come to him. The only problem with that plan though was the part about waiting which was basically the whole plan. History had certainly shown that that he was not the most patient person in the world, even if he did hide that small flaw in his personality behind some of the larger ones that he had. “Well I guess I’ll let you get to it then,” Sasuke mumbled, “if you need to use the bathroom or anything just head right in, I’ll leave the sliding door open for you.” Naruto watched as the Uchiha gave up on their conversation and retreated into the depths of the now completely repaired Uchiha manor. From what Sakura had told him the place hadn’t been that bad off and looking at it now the blonde couldn’t even tell that the place had been neglected at all. He was glad for that fact he guessed, that Sasuke had a home to come back to even if it had taken some serious man hours to bring it back to its former glory. Maybe it would be able to give the Uchiha the sense of peace and home that his seemingly pathetic attempts at friendship had never been able to. Apparently everyone was now helping Suigetsu, Juugo and Karin fix up their homes, all of which were situated somewhere or another in the Uchiha compound. Naruto couldn’t fathom why Sasuke didn’t let the others stay with him, he knew that Sasuke was a private person but to be all alone in such a big house with so many memories must have been hard for him. Naruto scoffed at his own thoughts, did he really care if Sasuke was alone and having a hard time or was it just out of habit that he was suddenly worried for the Uchiha? Naruto teleported away from the home to nestle himself in a comfortable spot among the trees, preparing himself for hours of observing the one person that could make his blood boil like no other could and a million other similar unanswerable questions to fill his mind. Even after all these years Sasuke still made him feel like he was a useless little kid, like he was dead last and always one step behind everyone else and now the raven had managed to take away the one thing that would have proven to everyone that he was capable of doing the things he said he was, even if they were sometimes thought to be impossible. He had always declared that he would bring Sasuke back to the village but he hadn’t done that. No, instead the bastard had brought himself back and he hadn’t known a thing about it until the Uchiha was basically reinstated as a villager, albeit a dangerous one, by Tsunade and the new council. It made him feel worse than useless, worse than a failure. Now Sasuke had a home and if the rumours he had been hearing had any truth to them he was now looking to start a family, both things Naruto had always wanted for himself but as he got older realised that he could never really have, especially now with his new mutation. Naruto groaned and rubbed at his eyes. He always felt bad, guilty even when he thought like this. He should be happy with what he had, not pining for the things that he didn’t. He had people who loved him like Tsunade who was more like a grandmother to him than the fifth Hokage that she was. He had Iruka who had stuck with him through the worst years of his childhood and given him someone to lean on when he couldn’t keep the tears at bay. He also had Jiraiya who was his teacher, his friend and most of all his godfather, the man his own father had loved and trusted enough to leave him with should anything happen. Naruto felt his chest tighten at the thought of the old pervert, of the moment when he had almost lost the white haired man for good. His fight with Pein had been one of the worst battles of his life to date but Jiraiya’s encounter with the pierced Akatsuki member had been far worse. Everyone had thought Jiraiya was dead, that Pein had defeated him. They had even buried an empty coffin in an attempt to gain some form of closure but a few weeks later Jiraiya had come through the newly repaired gates of Konoha, barely alive and still dripping wet from dragging himself out of his watery tomb. No one could explain it, not even Tsunade who had sent countless ninja to gather samples from the battle area to try and explain the phenomenon. Was it something in the water that had done it, some specific mixture of minerals in the earth that had been up turned during the battle? Nobody knew and the results of all the tests that had been done showed nothing spectacular in the area. What they did know though was that the man lying in the hospital was most definitely Jiraiya; a thousand different tests had proved it beyond a shadow of a doubt. It was a miracle and everyone was thankful for it though Tsunade had come up with a theory that her friends revival had something to do with his contract with the toads since some amphibians had regenerative abilities though that was still just speculation with nothing much to back it up. Quite a while had passed since that upheaval of all of their lives had occurred and Jiraiya was now perfectly fine even though Tsunade had him confined him to the village and its surrounding areas for the rest of his natural life so she could make sure that nothing else ever happened to him. Smirking to himself Naruto realised that that was the first time Tsunade had ever let her true feelings for her fellow Sannin show and that over the years they had only began to show more. The blonde ANBU suspected that it wouldn’t be long before the two made the big step and actually admitted their feelings to each other. Neither of them were exactly young anymore and the Uzumaki knew the fear of losing Jiraiya again before she could admit her feelings for him still hung like a cloud over the fifth Hokage’s head, hence her reason for keeping the man in the village. Naruto couldn’t blame her though, and he was only partly disappointed by her order. On one hand Jiraiya would be safe and he would never have to go through the pain of losing him again until it was his time but on the other hand it meant that he had lost his travelling companion and the man would no longer be able to lead him on wild adventures under the guise of training. Naruto looked back down at the Uchiha’s home as he heard a sudden noise coming from somewhere in the front of the house, Sasuke must have guests. Naruto scoffed at the thought, so the uptight Uchiha was entertaining guests now, he really must have changed. Pfft, it’s not like I care or anything, Naruto thought to himself as he crossed his arms and looked away from the house to stare out into the surrounding wood, neglecting his duties to watch and guard the Uchiha, who cares if I don’t watch him properly, it’s not like anyone could keep him here before. He’ll just up and leave again when he’s had enough of the village again. Naruto wrinkled his nose and his ears flattened against his head as an outraged shriek came from the Uchiha mansion. From the sounds that his new ears were picking up he could tell that it was the rest of Sasuke's team that had come to visit him. Naruto scowled and covered his ears, he didn’t want them snooping into Sasuke's life. Most of the time though his ears had a mind of their own, picking up on the slightest of noises which was both a help and a hindrance. He could hear an enemy coming toward him from miles away during missions which aided both him and his team but on the downfall he could hear people talking about him behind his back and his neighbours enjoying their…nightly activities. Keeping his ears covered so he wouldn’t hear every detail of what was going on in the house Naruto looked out into the woods, his sharp eyes following the various antics of the small animals that were scurrying to and fro in search of food and whatnot. So focused was he on the cute little animals that Naruto didn’t even notice Sasuke silently come out onto the back veranda and place a tray of food on the polished wooded floor before retreating back into his home. Only when the animals he had been watching left did the Uzumaki realise that something had changed with the house and looked back to see that no one was there. Naruto sighed as his eyes fell on the food that was the only difference to the garden and the back of the house. It was obvious that Sasuke had put it there for him though, he was the only one that could possibly sneak up on him with his now super hearing and if he put his nose to it he could also smell that the raven had come out into the area. The blonde felt is mouth start to water as he studied the immaculate tray of food. If he left it there it would spoil and that would be a horrible shame but if he gave in and ate the food left for him then that would seem like was giving in to the Uchiha and his attempts to regain some form of their friendship. Looking back into the woods Naruto saw some of the animals he had been watching coming out of their burrows and shelters again since they must have heard Sasuke and he suddenly had an idea as to how he could get the food without having to give up his pride. Jumping down from his tree branch Naruto created a clone to keep an eye on things at the house while he made his way further into the woods in search of a particular animal who he knew would be more than happy to help him with his plans. He didn’t have to search for long because soon a familiar burrow came into view at the base of an old tree. Kneeling down in front of the medium sized burrow Naruto let out a small animalistic coo, his ears rotating as the sound reverberated deep into the tunnel before echoing back to him along with the scuffling sounds made by the burrows occupant coming toward him. Naruto didn’t have to wait long before a small nose poked out of the den, sniffing around cautiously to see who it visitor was. The blonde smiled and held out his hand to the nose, trying not to laugh as the wet appendage pressed into his palm and whiskers tickled along his skin. Ascertaining that the one who had come to visit was safe the burrows occupant bounded out into the sunlight revealing burnt orange fur and a big fluffy tail with a white tip that swayed back and forth happily as Naruto reached out and scratched at large rotating ears. It was a female red fox. “How are you today little friend?” Naruto asked happily before letting out another animalistic coo and pulling the small animal toward him, letting the creature tug at his hood with its sharp teeth until the offending material was gone and the blonde’s large ears were freed. “I'm fine but what about you, you haven’t come to see me in quite a while,” Naruto heard the voice of the fox in his mind, “and look at you child, your so dirty!” The fox then jumped on Naruto, knocking him to the ground so she could have access to the blonde’s ears, grooming them and the rest of the hair on his head until the blonde pushed her away, knowing that his hair would be more dishevelled now than it was before the fox had started. Cooing to the small animal again Naruto began to explain his plan to her, having no fears that his furry friend wouldn’t understand him. He hated to admit that there was another pro to his current state and that was the fact that he seemed to be able to communicate in some way with every fox he ever came across. This fox was special though because she had come to him and ever since then they had shared a connection that he hadn’t been able to replicate with any other animal. He could hear her talking to him in his mind and it seemed that she could also hear him just as well and as clear as he could. He knew it was odd to talk to a fox in his mind and the fact that he could made him even stranger than he already was but Naruto couldn’t help but feel grateful that she had come to him because when she had he had needed her. *** “Alright all my tests have come back normal but regardless of that I want you to go straight home and take it easy,” Tsunade snapped her clipboard shut and affixed Naruto with a glare, “do I make myself clear?” “But I’ve been stuck in this room for over a week; can’t I go out and do a little training? Some fresh air will do me good,” Naruto smiled sheepishly as he tried to reason with the Hokage. He knew that even if she didn’t agree with him that he would just make his way to the training grounds eventually but it would be nice to have her consent for once. “Naruto I don’t know what training is going to do to you. Physically you’re perfectly fine apart from your new additions but if something were to go wrong with your chakra during training or if you were to use too much of it something could go wrong,” Tsunade explained. “Also you’re not used to your tail yet and it’s going to upset you balance and equilibrium and will only get worse when you try to preform difficult manoeuvres. There’s too much of a risk that you could hurt yourself right now, give it time and get used to it and then you can do all the training you want,” with her wisdom imparted and Naruto’s face a little pale at the thought of all the ways he could hurt himself the elder blonde turned on her heel and left the room, giving Naruto one last stern look before closing the door behind her. Throwing the sheet off his body Naruto stood so he could finally change out of the stupid hospital gown he was wearing and into some normal, comfortable clothes. Give it time? Get used to it? What did Tsunade think he had been doing for the past week, sitting in bed resting? Besides it was just a tail, Kyuubi had nine of them and look at what he had done to the village all those years ago. Tucking the offending appendage away and putting on the big hat that had been left with his normal clothes Naruto took time to check his appearance in the small mirror on the wall. He looked just like he normally did, except for the hat which just made him look stupid and not only covered his ears but the entire top of his head, falling into his eyes whenever he moved to quickly. It was also military green, like a jonin vest and clashed badly with his beloved orange attire. Saying goodbye to the hospital room happily Naruto made his way to the front desk to check himself out. He was glad he had asked Sakura to help him pick out some new clothes when she had come to visit him in the hospital. The hat was really ugly and having his tail tucked into his pants was just plain uncomfortable. He would have to remember to go and see her after he did a little sneaky training to organise a time to go, dare he say it…shopping. Leaving the hospital the blonde immediately took to the rooftops but was careful to measure his distances so he wouldn’t fall or become victim to himself and his tail like Tsunade had warned. As he moved across the rooftops and toward the training fields he began to forget about his tail and his ears, his caution being overtaken by his excitement to once again be out and about, training and doing what he was good at. Bad idea. Just as he was leaving the outskirts of the village and heading into the trees his weight shifted dramatically as he came down on a tree branch and he toppled forward, losing his balance and falling a few meters to the hard ground below. So shocked was Naruto at the fact that he had lost his balance so dramatically that he didn’t have time to correct himself and take the fall properly. All he could do was cover his head in an attempt to protect himself as he watched the ground rise up to meet him. It never came though and soon Naruto found himself opening his eyes, not aware the he had closed them to see that he was dangling a meter or so away from the ground, his ugly hat slowly floating down to the ground. He could also feel a strange and unwelcome breeze on his backside. Blinking in confusion Naruto cranked his neck to try and see what had saved him from crashing to the ground and gasped in surprise. There, warped around the tree branch was a bushy blond tail, his tail. The damn thing had ripped through his pants and saved him, without him even asking it to. All he had been thinking was that he didn’t want to hit the ground, that he desperately wanted to avoid that fate. Had his thoughts caused his tail to act when he hadn’t even thought of it? It must just be like breathing, Naruto thought as he hung there suspended, you never think about it but your always doing it, it’s always there keeping you alive. Now all I have to do is figure out how to get down. And just like that, almost immediately after he had thought the word down, Naruto felt his tail loosen its hold on the branch and he was suddenly falling again. He didn’t have so far to fall this time but the impact still managed to knock the wind out of him if a huff. Lying face down in the grass Naruto grumbled and gasped, trying to get the dirt out of his mouth and air into his lungs. At least that solved the problem of me getting down, Naruto thought as he cautiously rolled onto his back, studying himself to make sure nothing was broken, it won’t do to have me back in the hospital, Tsunade will kill me and then bring me back just so she can kill me again. Finally feeling like his chest wasn’t on fire Naruto sat up and rubbed his sore muscles that had taken the brunt of the fall. Standing the blonde looked around on the ground for his hat and another pained groan left him but it wasn’t for him, it was for his poor hat. Sure the thing was ugly but it didn’t deserve to be crushed under his falling weight. Picking up the dead garment Naruto dusted it off and desperately tried to bring some form of life back to it but no matter what he tried the hat remained a pile of crinkled material in his hands that somehow managed to look even worse than it did before. Sighing the blonde tucked the hat into one of his pockets before attempting to turn his head far enough to see just how much damage had been done to his pants and as he did his eyes caught sight of something that made his blood run cold. There, standing a little way off at the edge of the tree line was a little girl and from the look on her small pale face the blonde could tell that she was terrified and since they were the only two in the area his best guess was that she was terrified of him and the way he looked. Turing to face the girl fully he watched as she took a nervous step back and moved her arms up to hug herself. The gesture reminded the Uzumaki of the way Hinata used to act, using her arms like a shield against the rest of the world. Naruto knelt down, guessing that the child would feel better if they were at least on the same level. He also moved as slowly as he could, not wanting to startle her, “it’s alright; I'm not going to hurt you. I'm a shinobi, see?” Naruto pointed to his shinobi headband that was strung lazily around his neck. He’d tried to wear it on his forehead like normal when he had first gotten his new ears but he had found that it was just too uncomfortable. The fabric pressed against his ears and made them itch, not to mention it became impossibly hard to hear. The girl stepped back, looking shocked that Naruto had talked to her before tears welled up in her eyes and she let free a blood curdling scream, “MUMMY!!” Naruto’s eyes widened when the girl screamed for her mother and seconds later a middle aged woman broke through the tree line and scooped up her daughter, “you horrible beast, what did you do to my child. Get away!” “N..Nothing. I swear,” Naruto felt like he was frozen under the elder woman’s gaze, she was looking at him like he was some sort of horrible creature than had appeared from hell to gobble up her baby. He knew how he looked with his ears and tail free but it still hurt that people looked at him the same way they did when he was a child, if not worse. “Beast, I said go,” bending down the woman picked up a rock by her feet before throwing it at the blonde which he would have easily dodged had he not been so shocked. As it were the rock hit him right in the middle of the forehead with enough force to immediately give him a headache. Backing away from the pair Naruto made his way into the woods until he was far enough away that he could turn and run for it without giving the mother and child a perfect view of his tail. That would have just scared them more. Panting hard the Uzumaki found himself in an empty training area before he knew it, leaning against a tree and trying to catch his breath while he choked back tears that he shouldn’t have been shedding. “Why did this have to happen to me?” the blonde questioned the empty space around him, “everything was going so well before this. Why did I have to try and change, I just wanted to be more normal. I wanted to make everyone in the village safer.” There were no answers to his questions though and that only served to shift the blonde’s unhappiness into frustration and anger that only grew with the continued silence of the area. He’d only done this to himself to help everyone, so they could feel safer. Didn’t he deserve an answer to his questions for that? Letting out a distressed howl Naruto punched the tree he was leaning against mindlessly, releasing his built up emotions until his hands were raw and bloody, the tree now sporting a massive dent and barely standing any longer, all its leaves having fallen to the ground. The blonde sat, leaning against the destroyed tree and wiping his tears away with his bloody hands, smearing the red liquid across his cheeks. No matter how hard he wiped his tears though there was no stopping the tears which proved to frustrate him even more. So frustrated was he that he didn’t notice he fox that had been startled out of its burrow on the other side of the tree and made its way around the trunk to see what was destroying its home. He didn’t notice at least until the fox came right up to him and cooed. “You’re bleeding, are you okay?” Naruto blinked in surprise as he heard a soft female voice coming from the fox that had appeared beside him almost magically, “Kit? Where is your mother?” “K…kit?” Naruto sniffled in confusion. Kyuubi sometimes called him kit, it was a baby fox but the demon had never used it in a caring way, he had always used it as a degrading nickname, as something to belittle him. Did this fox think that he was a lost kit and but more important than that was how could he here her talking to him. Was she some kind of demon as well, “I…I don’t have a mother. How can I here you, and I'm not a kit.” “You are young, you have the ears and tail of a fox so you must be a kit,” the fox dipped its head and pressed its nose against the blondes bloody hands before licking at the broken skin gently and cleaning away the blood. Naruto winced and pulled his hand away from the fox, he didn’t know what kind of infection she might have or could give him through her saliva but she gripped onto his jacket sleeve with her pointed teeth and pulled his hand back down, “You have no mother to clean this for you, let me. What is your name, did your mother name you before you got lost?” Naruto blinked as the fox began cleaning the wounds on his hand again and this time he let her, knowing that if she had sickness that it wouldn’t kill him, he still had Kyuubi’s incredible immunity and anything he picked up would be destroyed, “my name is Naruto. Do you have a name?” “My name is Silver; my mother had a strange sense of humour. You know I had a kit like you once, he did silly things all the time,” the fox said quietly as she gently pulled splinters from Naruto’s hand with her teeth, “he never thought of the consequences of his actions, he got hurt all the time.” Naruto frowned as the fox talked, “Once?” The fox stopped cleaning his hand and laid her head on his lap, “Yes once, he challenged another male when he was too young and to small. He was wounded, wounded to badly for me to clean, for me to heal.” “I'm sorry,” Naruto whispered as the fox moved his other hand with her paw and began to clean that one as well, “it seems like you loved your kit very much.” The fox was silent as she cleaned the rest of Naruto’s hand and took the splinters from it. Once she was done she stood on Naruto’s lap and raised herself up to begin licking at his dirty ears, “I loved him with all my heart, he was my first and only kit. But I guess I have a new silly kit to take care of now.” *** Sasuke, Suigetsu and Juugo watched cautiously as Karin began to get more and more agitated. The trio had long since moved to the other side of the room, fearing her outburst was emanate and not wanting to be anywhere near her when it happened. Suigetsu fidgeted uncomfortably in his seat. The room was as silent as a tomb, he couldn’t even move his chopsticks to eat his lunch for fear that the noise would set off the monster sitting across from him. He knew he shouldn’t poke the bear, especially not when the bear was so close to snapping but he was just so hungry and his lunch looked so good that he just couldn’t help himself at the moment, “Hey Karin are you-” Suigetsu was cut off as Karin stood abruptly and knocked over her chair with a loud crash, “I don’t care, he can sit out there all day and starve. I did not slave over that food to have it go to waste and spoil in the sun!” Suigetsu shrunk back as Karin turned her furious gaze on him and he immediately regretted setting her off for his own gain, or at least he did until she spoke again, “Suigetsu you get seconds today!” The three men sat in silence as Karin stormed out of the dining room, heading toward the back of the house with more purpose than necessary. Juugo looked to the other two curiously as Karin left, “Slaved over? Didn’t she buy these boxed lunches at the store this morning?” “Who cares?” Suigetsu sung as he leapt from his seat and over the dining table to get to the exit, “I get seconds!” Sasuke and Juugo watched him go before both shrugged and returned to their meal, not really caring for the other twos antics. Just as the pair were about to finally taste their lunch they heard Karin scream from the back garden. Sasuke sighed as he put down his chopsticks, giving up on his food for now. There would be no silence in the house for him to sit down in peacefully and enjoy his food until Karin was satisfied that whatever she was screaming about was dealt with. Leaving the room Sasuke felt Juugo following close behind him, also wanting to see what was so important that Karin had to scream at the top of her lungs for it. Heading out to the back garden Sasuke stopped in his tracks when he saw Karin on her knees crying about how all her hard work had been wasted and Suigetsu struggling to stay standing as he clutched his middle and laughed furiously. “What happened,” Sasuke asked quietly, worried that perhaps Suigetsu had done something to make their fragile companionship even worse. He did not want to be here when Karin went off at the shark boy for his latest practical joke or insult. Karin just continued to wail but Suigetsu managed to recover enough to point to the wall of the garden before bursting out laughing again, highly amused by Karin’s misfortune. Looking over to where Suigetsu had pointed Sasuke raised an eyebrow as he saw what Karin was crying about. Sitting on top of the wall as proud as proud can be was a small red fox and clutched in its jaw saw the bento box that the red haired woman had left out for Naruto. With a flick of its bushy tail the little fox jumped off the wall and ran off with its stolen prize and just as Karin was about to chase after it in an attempt to rescue the stolen goods a shout from somewhere in the surrounding wood stopped her. “Wow a boxed lunch! Great job Silver. You could be a ninja just like me!!” Everything was silent for a moment save for the sound of Naruto’s maniacal laughter coming from somewhere in the forest as he devoured his lunch. Suigetsu, Juugo and Sasuke all looked to Karin, waiting for her explosion but she just stood there with her mouth hanging open. “I’ve never seen her be silent before,” Suigetsu whispered to Juugo who only nodded in amazement. Sasuke just smirked as he turned to make his way back into the house to his own lunch, “we’ll played Naruto, very well played.” *** A/N: Jiraiya is alive because he is an amphibian! I know it sounds ridiculous but it was the only thing that I could come up with to explain it. Also its not entirely false, many amphibians to actually have regenerative abilities such as newts, salamanders and axolotls who can heal severed limbs and begin their basic stages of regeneration with 24 hours and the limb they grow back is a perfect replica to the one that they lost. Also certain parts of the human body can actually regenerate when they get injured like your liver. Anyway reviews and feedback are always welcome even if they are bad and if you have any questions don’t be afraid to throw them at me. Also the end sucks, I couldn’t think of another way to round this chapter off.
