Chapter 5
Sasuke made his way back to the compound deep in thought over the conversation he’d shared with Neji. He entered and saw the bright pink hair and pale strip of skin between black of the other team Kakashi members. He really didn’t like Sai but there wasn’t much he could do about it now. He would be lucky if he didn’t get in trouble for leaving the compound without Naruto or Kakashi per his house arrest order. He really hoped not considering he’d gone straight to Hyuuga. Truthfully, despite the time it gave him with the Dobe, the whole baby sitter thing was starting to wear on his nerves. If he didn’t want to be here he wouldn’t be. He moved to the side of Sakura in a flash and smirked internally when she yelped.
“Sasuke don’t DO that.” She growled, stilling and facing Sasuke just outside the gate to the home he shared with Naruto. “We came to check on Naruto and get him. Lady Tsunade is ready for his follow up exam.” Tucking pink hair behind her ear she blushed a little at her long time crush. Logically she knew he would never feel romantically for her but first crushes rarely just disappeared. “I brought him a gift!” She smiled holding up the little toad.
One black brow rose at the sight of the plushie. First Iruka had given the chibi a blond fox plush toy (which had started being made shortly after Naruto’s repeated successes in protection of the village) and now Sakura with a toad that reminded him of Naruto’s summons. “I don’t believe he will be a child too much longer if Lady Tsunade is ready to see him.” Sakura was about to respond when the tiny blond raced out and stilled looking around and upon spotting Sasuke he raced over as fast as his little legs would carry him.
Colliding with Sasuke’s legs he started crying. “Kashi is killin’ Tachi! Hewp Nii-san!! You godda made him sopp pweaase! Pwease save Tachi!!” Sasuke moved on instinct putting Naruto in Sakura’s arms. He was a blur, blade ready and through the door believing the Akatsuki had attacked. He stilled, red eyes turning when the image of his elder brother riding Kakashi was burned into his mind.
The door slammed and his eyes blinked in shock. He couldn’t believe it. Shaking his head to clean it of the images he shuddered and fury poured through him. He could hear the cursing and scuffle as the two men dressed hurriedly. Sakura and Sai had entered the home in case help was needed. Sasuke snarled when his brother and team leader exited the guest room.
“I tried to ignore you. I tried to be… tolerant because the Dobe trusted you but I’ve reached the limit of my patience. GET OUT OF MY HOUSE! Get off my property and stay the fuck away from me and the Dobe or by Kami I will slit your throat!” Sasuke was screaming. The only other human who had ever rattled the Uchiha’s cage stood wide eyed with tears streaming down his face quaking in fear.
“I am the heir and this is ALL my land Otouto. I was on a MISSION, doing my duty for our village, for YOU and Sunshine.” Itachi snapped back tired of his brother’s attitude and behavior. “You’re more spoiled than you were as a child! You’re selfish too. How dare you abandon your friends, your duty to your village? You took an oath as a shinobi.”
“I swear Itachi I will murder you in cold blood and die for the pleasure. YOU are not forgiven. You can’t even earn it. YOU disgust me. Your duty to this village?” Sasuke had yet to sheath his blade and his eyes spun in a menacing way. “What about your duty to me? You protected me? By raping my mind not once but twice? You tortured me. In the name of a mission? Because it was a mission and you protected Naruto when he was too small to defend himself you believe that makes up for what you did? For attacking me, Kakashi… for coming after him? I can’t even begin to imagine what damage you did being the one who was attempting to capture him for those sick bastards. Not when I know what your behavior over the last years has done to me. GET OUT OF MY HOME! If you wish to fight me for the Uchiha lands then do so. You don’t deserve the name. You abandoned your family. You are nothing.”
“You selfish little SHIT. I did what I had to do to maintain my cover. If I had wanted him caught or you killed it would have been done. Do not fool yourself Sasuke, you are not ready to take me on.” Itachi’s own voice did not raise but there was a very dangerous edge to his words. “I am not a traitor. I did what I had to do to keep what was left of my family alive, to protect this village and the rest of what I loved. No less than I would expect you to do in the same situation. Or would you not take the mission should the Hokage tell you it was the only way to protect Naruto?”
Sasuke flinched at the words. He knew there was nothing he wouldn’t do to protect the blond. After his discussion with Neji he also knew that everyone except Uzumaki knew it too. “I can’t…” Shaking his head the slick sound of the sword being sheathed echoed in the silent room. His head snapped up. Silent room, no room with Naruto in it was silent. “Dobe?” He turned in a circle and stilled feeling for the blond’s charka. “Where is he?” Suddenly everyone in the room was in motion checking the house and compound for the small blond child. “DOBE!!!”

“I will murder you in cold blood.”The words echoed over and over through his mind. Sasuke was a bad ninja, he wasn’t nice, he’d fooled Naruto. The screaming and fighting… he was next. He couldn’t save Itachi and there were too many ninja. They would kill him. He didn’t want to die. Tears streamed down his face. He was a coward, he had abandoned the only person who cared for him, who protected him but the other one, the one who had been so nice and held him safe all night had tricked them. The blond managed to evade hands and hollers of his name, fear sending him flying through the village streets trying to find a safe place to hide. When arms grabbed him up he screamed and pushed trying to get away. Struggling and kicking until arms wrapped him up tight.
“STOP! Stop. Shhh, its ok Naruto. Its ok, you’re safe. What happened its ok. It’s Shikamaru. I’m… I’m a Nara.” Silently he pleaded for his father to have been one of the blond’s good ninja. When he stopped struggling only to start sobbing into his neck Shikamaru sighed in relief. He didn’t want to hate his own father. After a moments debate he turned from the direction of his home and toward the Hyuuga compound. After seeing the way Naruto had responded to Gaara he figured it would be a good place to calm the chibi.

Sasuke was frantic looking for Naruto. Who knew what could be done to him in such a fragile state. The little ball of energy trusted too easily with a few kind words and he was still not liked by too many of the older generation. There was no sign of him, no laughter, no screams, nothing that signaled he was anywhere to be found. Sasuke headed for Hokage tower hoping beyond hope that Naruto had run there for safety from the fight. He hadn’t stopped to consider how the argument between himself and Itachi would affect this tiny version of his best friend and as a result he had lost the boy.

Gaara took one look at the trembling chibi and the glazed look of terror on his usually bright blue eyes before his heart lodged in his throat. The desire to murder rose and his gourd shook and sand poured from it as he snatched the toddler from the shocked Nara. As soon as the blond was in his arms his sand enclosed them in its impenetrable safety. He hadn’t done this in so long, he hadn’t needed to but the instinct was too strong, not when he saw that look. One he was too familiar with, one he had seen too many times to count on his own face.
Something in Neji panicked as his lover ensconced himself and Naruto in sanctuary. This could not be good, whatever the Uchiha had done he suddenly wished for another round of training this time he wouldn’t pull any punches. “Nara go get the Hokage. I’ll get Tamari and Kankuro. It’s possible they can help. He won’t bring him out.” Neji was sure of that when he heard the gravely sound of the Kazekage whispering to Naruto.
