The Bastard was there. He'd forgotten about it completely, that he was supposed to be on the desk that morning, but he couldn’t have planned it better. "Sorry I'm a little late, I was… detained," he said with a grin.
He did in fact have not one, but two bite marks visible above his collar and he was walking funny. He hobbled past the desk toward the back part of the office, exaggerating his limp a little and nearly died laughing at the look on The Bastard's face. He grabbed his clip board, mission books and other necessities and headed back to the desk. "Hello, Izumo," he greeted him pleasantly. This was met with pure shock and little else. Izumo sat on the other end of the desk, his mouth hanging open, his eyes nearly bugging out of his head. Iruka grinned. "Is something wrong? You'll catch a fly that way." Izumo's mouth snapped closed and he turned away to stare straight ahead. Fighting the urge to laugh, Iruka took his seat at the other end, albeit a little uncomfortably. He went through the upcoming missions and looked over the teams available for them. It was with relief that he saw that Kakashi's team had, in fact, already been rotated back. He wouldn't have to do anything. He would have if he'd needed to and he told himself it wasn't for him, but for them. Thankfully, it didn't matter, anyway. He spent his hours on the desk going between wanting to laugh his ass off at Izumo's behavior and trying to think through the situation with Kakashi and Yamato. Izumo kept staring at him and every time he caught him looking, Iruka would reach up and scratch at one of the love bites left by the other two over the weekend. The Bastard would quickly look away then. The really funny times were when he'd get up to go to the bathroom. He'd walk slowly and carefully past him to the hallway on the other side of the desk. As he turned to head down the hall, he knew for a fact those eyes were watching everything. He even made it worse at one point by simply reaching back and rubbing his behind a little when he knew that no one besides Izumo was there. Sundays on the desk were always quiet, so even with the distractions given him by Izumo, he had a lot of time to think. Which, invariably, turned his mind back to Kakashi and Yamato. He just didn't quite understand what was happening with those two. They'd bought his shampoo, had a hairbrush for him at their house. Yamato had built him a hot spring in their back yard, or so he said. They seemed to be constantly finding excuses to keep him or get him there. And try as he might, he couldn't completely dismiss what he'd seen when he'd made love with them. But they were already a couple, already partners. There's a reason it's a called a "couple". You didn't bring a third person into your relationship, it was just asking for trouble. People didn't just fall in love with someone else and still love the person they were already with. Iruka, of course, conveniently ignored the fact that he already loved both of them. Then, of course, there was the fact that he just got out of a bad relationship. At the thought, he glanced sideways to see Izumo staring at him again. This time, he reached down and scratched at the bite Yamato had left on his inner thigh. He could practically hear The Bastard's head whip back to face forward. No, he'd just managed to avoid serious heartbreak. Even if he could get past the fact that they were already together and he was intruding into their relationship, he didn't need to open himself up to that again. At least not so soon. He refused to admit to himself that Izumo had only ever been an attempt to forget about the copy nin and his partner to begin with. He was grateful when his time was up at the desk. He passed Izumo without a second glance, limping again to the back to put everything away. He turned in the few reports that had come in that afternoon and headed out. It wasn't until he was half way to his apartment that he realized he hadn't even glanced at The Bastard on his way out. When he got home, he had just enough time to shower and change before dinner. He's already worn his one good sweater, so he pulled his only dress shirt, dark blue, out of his closet. When he put it on, he realized he wasn't going to be able to cover the bite marks completely, but there was nothing he could do about it. He grabbed his dress pants, then headed back into the bathroom to deal with his hair. As he brushed it out and started to pull it up, he stopped and stared a moment, then he shoved the tie into his pocket instead. When the knock sounded at only five fifteen, he paused by the door to check the chakra outside. Recognizing theirs, he grinned, figuring it was probably Yamato's influence that they were so early. He opened it and fought the drool that formed as he looked them both over. Kakashi wore dress pants and a button-down shirt open at the collar, both in solid black. He had a simple small matching black mask and band of fabric over his sharingan eye. Yamato was wearing a snug forest green sweater and dark pants that showed off his body. Iruka had to literally force the drool back. The brunet grinned at him. "You left it down." "Hm?" Iruka asked, then blinked at them. "Oh, my hair. Yeah. I thought…" he let it trail off. "Thank you," Yamato said quietly. Kakashi held out a bottle of sake toward him. Iruka blinked down at it. "Thank you," he said, taking it from the copy nin. "We figured flowers wouldn't be quite appropriate," Yamato said with a smirk. "Right, I'm not much of a flower person." He laughed and turned to put it onto the kitchen table. "Kakashi gave me the same thing when he picked me up for our first date." Yamato said and Iruka didn't miss the significance. He set the bottle down and closed his eyes, taking a deep breath to gather himself together before turning back. "Well, then…," he said for lack of anything better. He grabbed his keys and jacket and they moved apart enough for him to step between them. He pulled the door closed and they turned to the street. It was a little unnerving to walk between them like this. The last time he had was Friday night on the way to their house after the bar. Before he'd ever slept with them. Of course, there'd been very little sleeping that night. It got even worse as Kakashi put a hand on his back and Yamato took one of his. He glanced down at their clasped hands and then back up at Yamato, who was watching him. He couldn’t decipher the look in his eyes. Instead, he tightened his hand around the older man's and simply enjoyed holding it. The thought crossed his mind that there could be no mistaking that they were out together walking the way they were. But if they were willing to be seen with him like that, he wasn't going to argue or question. They walked in silence for a few blocks, then Iruka remembered the roster. "Oh, I checked the mission roster today." "Oh?" Kakashi asked, glancing down. "Yeah, you've been rotated back. You could still get sent out if something major happens, but for standard missions, you should be home until after the new year." Iruka chuckled. "And I didn't even have to do anything to make it happen." "Oh good," Yamato said, breathing a sigh of relief. "I was getting very tired of being gone." "I remember what that was like." Iruka said. "It's been a while, but I remember it well." They turned a corner and Kakashi stopped. Iruka glanced up with raised eyebrows. "My favorite restaurant," Yamato said. "I thought you might like it." Kakashi opened the door to the small seafood restaurant and held it for the other two. When they stepped into the dim atmosphere, Iruka swallowed. He'd been there only once before after this part of the village had been rebuilt. Raido had spent the better part of the meal so annoyed at the prices that Iruka ended up paying for it just to shut him up. That had been shortly before they'd split. He shifted his thinking, determined to replace the memory with a better one. The greeter took Kakashi's name and led them to a circular booth along the back wall. Iruka noted that they kept him firmly between them at all times. They were left with their menus, the special of the day and a promise that their server would be along in a moment. They looked over the menus in silence for a few minutes. Iruka found a salmon that looked really good and he used the menu to try to hide his discomfort and get a better grip on himself. No matter what may or may not be between them in emotions, the concept of a date with two other people was so foreign, he was completely confused. "You know, we haven't done this before, either," Kakashi said. "Done what?" Iruka asked, then sighed in relief when the server came back. He listened as Yamato ordered the walnut shrimp and Kakashi the salt-broiled saury and made mental notes to find out how to cook them. "A… well, a three-way date." When Iruka looked up, he could just see a blush over the edges of the mask. "Definitely a new one on me. You know, Iruka, before Kakashi, I'd only ever dated a few times." Yamato said and paused when the server brought their drinks. "And, if you'd believe this, it was with women." "Really?" Iruka blinked at him. "Why?" Yamato shrugged one shoulder. "I think I fell in love with him when we were still in ANBU years ago. I didn't realize it, of course. I only knew that I felt something for him. But he was as aloof as he always has been and I had no idea that he might have felt the same way." He took another sip of his drink. "But I thought that he didn't even like men, so I tried to bury my own attraction." He chuckled. "Didn't work very well." "Yeah, I know how that goes," Iruka said, without thinking. He swallowed, but if they caught it, they didn't say anything. "And I had thought the same thing about him." Kakashi said, shaking his head. "We've known each other for more than twelve years." "That's… a lot of lost time," the teacher said, staring at the table. A lot of time for him to come between… "You realize that we've known each other for…" Kakashi paused, "probably ten years, as well?" Iruka looked up sharply at him. "Has it really been that long?" "How long have you been teaching?" He asked and Iruka had to stop and think. "Huh." He shook his head, then blushed. "I didn't like you much back then." Kakashi laughed. "The feeling was mutual." He dropped the smile and when Iruka looked up at him, he said, "Not so anymore." Iruka picked up his sake and took a drink. He wanted so much to believe there was more there. "Well, it's certainly different for me, now, too." He took a deep breath and looked over at Yamato. "I had no idea who you were, at first." Yamato shrugged. "That's no surprise. I did appear pretty suddenly and get put in charge of Naruto. I'd heard about you, though, from him." He motioned to the copy nin. "Oh?" Iruka glanced over at Kakashi. "Yeah, he told me all about you." He grinned. "Mostly good stuff." The teacher blushed. "First time I saw you was…" Yamato paused, " well, I remember seeing you around the village, but the first time I remember seeing you and knowing who you were was not long after I was brought out to help with Naruto. You came by Ichiraku's when we were there." Iruka remembered that. He'd taken one look at the man and had to force himself to concentrate on the others. "I remember. Wasn't that one of the times Kakashi convinced you to buy lunch?" Yamato glared at the copy nin. "Yes. Tricked me into it, claiming he respected my abilities." "I did!" Kakashi insisted. "Of course, I didn't have to tell you. That served my purposes." He blushed when the glare didn't go away. Iruka put out a hand to Yamato. "He really does respect you." Yamato glanced at him. "Oh?" Iruka nodded. "We were both at the ramen stand at one point not long after that and he talked about you to me when I asked." "Huh. I didn't know that." He looked over at Kakashi, who'd suddenly taken an avid interest in the lantern hanging over their booth. Then Yamato turned back to him. "You asked about me?" Iruka blushed. "Yeah, I…" he paused, kicking himself. Way to give away just how long he'd been attracted to the man. "I was curious who would be working with Naruto and Sakura." Yamato gave him a look that told him clearly he didn't buy it, but when he opened his mouth to speak, they heard an unmistakable loud voice. "Kakashi-sensei? Yamato-taichou? Iruka-sensei?" "That kid has the worst timing," Yamato muttered. Naruto, holding Sakura's hand, came around the end of the booth at that moment. Iruka smiled at them. "Hello, Naruto, Sakura-chan." "Hello, Iruka-sensei. How are you?" She asked, then Iruka noticed that her eyes went straight to his neck. He blushed profusely. "Um, fine, thanks. You?" He asked. "Oh, um, I'm good, thank you." She glanced from him to the other two, then back to his neck. He saw the exact second when she put it together. Her eyes widened just slightly, then she smiled. "Well, Naruto, we don't want to interrupt their dinner." "But they're not eating yet. So, what are you three doing here together?" Naruto asked. Iruka was hoping the booth would swallow him up. But no, life couldn't be that easy. Kakashi glanced at him, then at Yamato who nodded slightly. Oh God, they're not… "We're here on a date, Naruto. Are you?" Kakashi asked, mildly. Unfortunately, the question didn't distract him the way he hoped it would. "Yeah. Um, who's date?" He asked, passing a confused look around the table. Iruka was fairly certain his entire face was red. "And why is your hair down, Iruka-sensei?" He was going to kill the kid. After he killed the other two men at the table because they both reached over at the same time and took his hands. Unfortunately, only the one next to Kakashi was under the table. Naruto turned to stare at Yamato. Iruka took a deep breath and hoped he forced the blush back. He glanced at each of the other men, then said, "it's down because my dates, Kakashi and Yamato, likeit down." Naruto blinked at both of them. "They're… okay. That's… a new one on me." He stood there awkwardly a moment, scratching the back of his head. "I can't say I've heard of that before." He shook his head and grinned. "Well, then, um, have a good rest of your date!" He waved at them and they headed out. Iruka watched them leave, more than a little shocked. He'd expected…not that. He was just glad that he didn't need to say more. He was still a little too unsure of what the hell was going on with them to try to explain it to someone else. He took a deep breath. "He took it better than I expected him to. Sakura, too." "I think that after everything Naruto's seen over the years, not a lot would surprise him anymore. He may not know what to do with it all, but I doubt it would surprise him." Kakashi said, still looking at the teacher. "You know Sakura saw my marks." Iruka said, downing the rest of his sake in one long drink. He winced as the alcohol burned a path down his throat. "Yeah. She's a bit more, um, subtle than Naruto is, though." Yamato said. Iruka stared into his empty bottle for a moment, then glanced at each of the others. "Are you going to get crap from them for it?" As soon as he set his bottle down, Kakashi took his hand again, making him even crazier. Kakashi shrugged. "Even if they do give us crap, we won't take it. What we choose to do in our personal lives is our business." "It's our choice who we love and spend time with," Yamato added and Iruka looked up at him over that. Before he could say anything, however, their food was served. The other two were forced to let go of his hands so they could eat and Iruka was grateful to be able to concentrate on the food for a few minutes. He let his thoughts wander as he ate his salmon. He couldn't have mistaken what Yamato had said. Could they love him? Both of them? He still had a hard time accepting it, but he could, at least, admit to himself that he did love both of them. And if he loved two people, wasn't it possible that they did, too? He let the thoughts go, allowing them to work their way back to his subconscious to work on for a while. He wasn't going to find the answer right then, anyway. "Does it bother you, Iruka?" Kakashi asked into the silence. "I'm sorry?" Iruka said, pulling his attention back to the table. "Us. Being out with us," Kakashi clarified. Iruka blinked. "Hell no, why should it? I…" he paused and shook his head. "Why?" "You were awfully embarrassed before." "Oh. I told you then, I just don't want you guys to have to take crap about me." Because that can kill a relationship really damn quick, even if they didn't have a real one. Iruka sighed. "Anyway, no, it doesn't," he blushed. "I'm… well," he shrugged, unsure how to put it. He settled on, "I like it." "Good." Yamato said with a nod. They fell into silence again, focusing on their food. "Oh! I forgot to tell you. The Bastard was on the desk today." Iruka said and started laughing. "Oh? Do tell." Kakashi said, motioning for another drink. Iruka went into great detail over the rest of their dinner, describing the facial expressions, how Izumo couldn't seem to look away. The mood lightened considerably and they laughed with him. "So, by the time I was almost home, I realized I hadn't even given him a second thought on the way out the door." He shook his head. Yamato grinned at that. "He was too excited about his date with us." Kakashi nodded. "Of course, wouldn't you be?" "Duh?" Yamato said sitting back and spreading his arms. "I mean, look at me? I'm the catch of the village." The other two managed to hold their straight faces for about thirty seconds. Kakashi and Iruka couldn't stop laughing for a good two full minutes once they'd gotten started. When Iruka looked up at the wounded look on Yamato's face, he managed to smother his laughter. "Aw, come on, you know we don't really think that." He leaned over, intending to drop a quick kiss on the older man. Instead, he caught him and pulled him in for a real one. Iruka's eyes closed and they forget all about the restaurant. It wasn't until they heard Kakashi mention cold food that they pulled back. The younger man blushed again. "I wasn't really hurt. I knew better," Yamato said with a twinkle in his eye. Iruka raised an eyebrow. "Ass," he said without heat and turned back to his salmon, which had, indeed, started to get cold. They finished their dinner shortly after that and after Kakashi took care of the bill, they all stood. Outside the restaurant, Kakashi's arm went around Iruka's shoulders and Yamato took his hand again. He closed his eyes briefly to enjoy it, then they turned and started walking. When they got to his house, he unlocked the door and stepped aside. They followed him in and looked around. Neat and tidy, it looked like a teacher's apartment. The desk in one corner was stacked with papers and scrolls, pens and pencils. His bag was on the floor next to it and there was a bookshelf full of various books on different jutsus, teaching and the like. A separate shelf on the wall held a small collection of Icha Icha novels. The only messy thing in the whole place was the bed. The twisted sheets told the story of the sleepless nights he'd had before he'd started seeing the other two. And sleeping in their bed. Well, when they slept. He turned around to them. "Um, do you want at drink? I still have time before I really need to get to my papers." Yamato raised his eyebrows. "I thought you were going to bring them over and grade them at the house?" Iruka shook his head. "I can grade them just fine here." "Yes, but then we don't get to be around you, here. Unless you'd like us to stay?" Kakashi sent a pointed look at Iruka's tiny bed. Well, tiny for three people, anyway. He blushed. Kakashi stepped closer and pulled the younger man against him. "Is it so hard to believe we want you with us?" Iruka stared at him a moment, then swallowed. "Yes." Kakashi shook his head and bent it to the teacher. He captured his lips and moved his over them. He made love to other man's mouth, giving him everything he could. They broke apart and Kakashi realized that he was as affected by the kiss as he hoped Iruka was. They stared at each other a moment, mismatched eyes meeting brown. "Come back with us. Stay." Why am I arguing this so much? He'd just been asked, point blank, to go and be with them. Maybe he needed just to go with things for a while. If it went bad eventually, then it did. But he was being given a chance to spend time, to love and make love with these two people. And maybe it was time to stop fighting it quite so much. It may have only been a couple of days since they'd started being together, but he was more aware than most how many people don't come back from their missions. And how precious the time you did have together was. He glanced at Yamato who stood a short way away. He forced himself to look objectively at the man's body language and he realized that the other was nervous. He wanted it, too. He smiled. "Okay. I, um, need a few things. Why don't I get them together and follow you there?" "We can wait," Yamato offered. "We don't mind. In fact, we'd prefer to." Kakashi stepped back. "Can we help?" Iruka paused, then shook his head. "It won't take long. Just, um, have a seat, then. There's an open bottle of sake in the kitchen if you want a drink." He gathered everything as quickly as he could, and only years of being neat kept him from stuffing his uniform willy nilly into the bag. He paused when he started to grab his hairbrush, remembering he didn't need it and shook his head. He came back out to the bedroom to see that they'd made his bed and were sitting together, waiting. He was glad to see they'd helped themselves to the sake. He swallowed and turned his attention to his desk, once more nervous. It was ridiculous, he'd spent the evening with these two for the last two nights. But then again, he hadn't gone over there intending to spend the night, either. It was a small distinction, but an important one to him. He finally had everything together and he turned back to them. "I guess that's it." He said and felt a little ridiculous. He and Raido had started to spend a lot of time at each other's apartments, but it had taken weeks for that to start and it had never been quite so direct. He'd left things there, Raido had left a few at Iruka's apartment, but it was very few things and it hadn't had the same tone of…want to it. Instead it had been much more about convenience. Yet another thing he just didn't know how to handle. They took his bags, he locked up and they turned toward the other two's house. And Iruka wondered just what he was getting himself into. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
