Snow gives way to freezing rain, heralding the onset of spring. Gone are the thick coats of fluffy, white snow. Instead, every stationary surface glistens with moisture in the sunlight peeking between ominous, gray clouds.
The weather change isn't a significant improvement. Excessive amounts of water can be just as dangerous as excessive amounts of snow. It also makes outdoor training more difficult for a ninja.
Regardless of the weather, Naruto was never one to pass up the opportunity for training, but that didn't mean she liked going out, especially when it's cold. She always hated being cold. So even she had to grudgingly concede that one of the pluses of being pregnant means she doesn't have to go train in such miserable weather.
Being on medical leave hasn't meant a lazy, carefree life either. Contrary to Tsunade's orders, her life has been anything but restful. Not when most of her friend's idea of spacing out their visits is to wait until the previous visitor leaves before knocking on the door.
Since the meeting, nearly everyone who attended has been coming around constantly. Not a day passes where she isn't answering the door. It’s sweet how they want to check up on her, but it’s annoying the hell out of her, resulting in a very uncharacteristically grumpy Naruto.
Fate pity those who catch her on a really bad day. She's certain Konohamaru, Moegi and Udon now have a very healthy fear of pregnant women. Reflecting back on it, she figures it probably wasn't such a good idea to answer the door with a long, ominous looking kitchen knife in her hand while wearing a bloody apron. She also didn't sleep well the night before, so she was probably looking a little crazed. Not that she feels any sympathy for her minions. She was in the middle of preparing a roast for dinner that night.
Plus, they know better than to try annoying her for their own amusement. Particularly if said pregnant woman happens to be a trained kunoichi armed with a small arsenal of kunai. Either way, a little terror will do them some good.
Over a week later another knock disturbs her in the midst of her morning yoga routine. Iruka had gone to work and Kakashi disappeared somewhere. For once she had the living room all to herself. Growling softly, she decides to ignore them. Maybe they'll catch the hint and go away. She really hates interrupting her routine when she's got a good rhythm going.
Despite her serene countenance, her face twitches in annoyance when her visitor knocks louder.
"Naruto,” a soft male voice drifts through the door, “I know you're in there. Please open up."
Naruto frowns in confusion at hearing Shino's voice before scowling at the door. Didn't he already visit with Kiba and Hinata days ago? Obviously, he isn't going away. Well, tough shit, she's in her zone.
Another knock and another familiar voice she vaguely recognizes speaks.
"Naruto, this is Aburame Shibi and my bugs tell me you're in there. Please open up, I won't take up much of your time."
For a moment, Naruto stares at the closed door in shock. Cursing softly, she climbs off her yoga mat, rolls it up before shoving it out of the way and goes to open the door. She can't help gaping at Aburame Shibi standing on the doorstep with his son Shino.
"Sorry 'bout the delay,” she apologizes when she realizes they’re standing in the rain. Stepping aside she waves them in. “Please come in. Let me take your coats," she offers, holding out her hand.
"Thank you," Shibi replies, shrugging off his coat and handing it to her.
Shino mimics his father and hands her his coat as well.
“Have a seat. I’ll be right back,” she informs them.
Taking their coats she disappears down the hallway to place them on hangers and hang on the shower curtain rod in the bathroom so the water will drip off. Returning, she settles into an armchair near the sofa both men are sitting on.
"My apologies for disturbing you, Naruto, but father felt it was more appropriate to visit," Shino explains.
Shibi picks up the conversation before she can reply.
"As clan leader I should congratulate you in person on your pregnancy and impending nuptials."
"Thanks guys,” Naruto smiles warmly. “But you didn't have to go out of your way. Especially in lousy weather like today."
She finds it extremely unnerving to be in the presence of both Aburame's. Shino is bad enough, but to have two such inscrutable men in the same room is a bit much.
"We did," Shibi answers, matter of factly. "It's appropriate to apologize in person."
"For what?" Naruto frowns slightly in confusion and cocks her head.
"For not doing more to aid you when you were a child," Shibi answers.
Taken aback she isn't sure what to say.
"For years I deluded myself into believing my clan and I honored the Yondaime's final wish by not contributing to the harm you experienced growing up,” Shibi continues, sensing her uncertainty. “Yet, we turned a blind eye to your circumstances. Our silence allowed your harassers to continue unimpeded. Even if we had been honoring the Yondaime's wish, we did not honor our oaths to the Sandaime Hokage. As Konoha shinobi it was our duty to serve him and we failed by not supporting him in his oath to protect you."
Still seated he bows low to her.
While processing his words, Naruto belatedly realizes this is the most she's ever heard out of any Aburame.
"I don't know what to say," she finally manages. "Thank you."
Shibi nods.
"It shouldn't have taken recent events to realize how my clan and I failed. You have shown through your efforts and achievements how well you embody the Will of Fire the Sandaime tried teaching us. Despite all the animosity you have endured, you shine brighter than any shinobi, past or present. It is an honor to call you a comrade. On my personal honor we will to continue supporting and protecting you, as we should've done from the beginning. It sets a poor example for my son to follow when he's due to take over the clan for me. It would mean more work for Shino to make up for my dishonor."
“But…” Naruto starts to protest.
"Do not question it, Naruto,” Shino interrupts. “It's no less the truth. Apologies should be made when offenses occur. It also is a poor demonstration of our Will of Fire."
“Then consider it accepted,” she smiles, graciously accepting their apologies.
Although still annoyed at the interruption to her yoga, she enjoys chatting with the two men for a few more minutes before retrieving their coats when they finally leave.
A couple of days later Naruto is spending the afternoon communing with the motley collection of houseplants, half of them being from her old apartment. Her collection combined with Kakashi and Iruka's plants resulted in the apartment becoming rather green and lush looking. While in the middle of repotting a Ficus tree, the front door vibrates with boisterous knocking.
Growling low, she takes a deep breath, determined to ignore them. Undeterred, the visitor knocks again. She groans when she hears barking punctuating Kiba's annoyed voice booming loudly through the door.
"C'mon, Naruto! Don't try pretending you're not home when it's raining!"
"Kiba! Quit being rude!"
Naruto wonders if that’s his older sister Hana.
"Ow! Hana!"
Yep, definitely Hana.
With a weary sigh, Naruto's head drops in defeat. Wiping her hands clean on a rag she grudgingly heads for the door. Taking a deep, calming breath she opens it to see Tsume, Hana and a sulky Kiba along with all their nin dogs crowding in front of her. She can't resist gaping at the intimidating sight before snapping to her senses and inviting them in out of the rain.
"Sorry, guys! Come on in and let me get your coats. I'll hang them up in the bathroom to dry off a little."
Tsume answers by stepping inside and snatching Naruto into a bone-crushing hug.
Seeing stars and wobbly, Naruto barely manages to stay on her feet when Tsume releases her to let Hana take her turn. Smiling knowingly, she gives the dazed redhead a far less aggressive hug.
"I'll get the coats, Naruto, don’t worry," Kiba offers, blushing slightly in embarrassment. "Sorry about mom, she gets a little too enthusiastic sometimes," he apologizes quietly when he hugs her and gives her a kiss on the cheek.
“Thanks, Kiba,” she smiles, returning the hug. “And no worries,” she winks, stepping back. Gesturing toward the hallway, she adds, “If you head into first bedroom on the right it’s mine. You’ll find extra hangers in the closet.”
Having collected his mom’s and sister’s coats, Kiba nods and disappears from the room.
Tsume makes a beeline for the armchair while Hana takes a spot on the sofa, leaving all the ninken crowding the door outside. One by one each vigorously shakes then wipes their paws on the doormat before crossing the threshold.
“Thanks, guys,” she gratefully tells the animals.
As the dogs settle into the open space between the living room and dining room areas her mind briefly screeches to a halt in shock seeing all of the dogs assembled together. She never realized how big each one really was before. It’s an intimidating sight.
Kakashi and Iruka's apartment is fairly large, but having four adults and five full-grown nin dogs together like this is a bit much. Looking at Tsume and Hana, she darkly notes that they don't seem the least bit bothered by crowded conditions having their nin dogs along with them would cause.
After Kiba returns from hanging up the coats he takes the final spot on the end of the sofa while Naruto settles on the other end next to Hana and closest to Tsume.
"How've you been feeling, Naruto?” Hana begins, immediately switching into medic mode. “Are your symptoms still severe? Are you still suffering severe nausea? You're not experiencing any cramping or bleeding, are you?"
"Woah, slow down, Hana!" Naruto laughs while waving her hands in surrender. Hana's serious expression struck her as funny. "I'm fine. Baa-chan's been monitoring me closely. I'm still getting sick, but it's not as bad. So I'm not throwing up as much. And no cramping or bleeding." At Hana's scrutinizing look, she hastily adds, "I swear!"
"My turn," Tsume smirks, gleefully rubbing her hands together. "Congrats on getting married and being pregnant, by the way."
“Nice segue,” Kiba drolly comments, rolling his eyes at his mother.
"It's about time Ibiki settled his ass down and started a family,” Tsume continues, pointedly ignoring her son. “He was always spouting some bullshit about his career not leaving enough room for one. So when are you two getting hitched?” she eagerly asks. “How formal is the ceremony going to be? Or are you waiting until after the baby is born?"
As Naruto's brain attempts to process all the questions fired at her, Kiba comes to her rescue.
"Knock it off, you two!" he scolds his mother and sister. "Neither of you are giving Naruto much of a chance to answer before continuing the third degree. This isn't a tag team match."
"I'm making sure Naruto is okay, Kiba," Hana snaps in annoyance.
"And I want to get all the basics because I never thought in a million years anyone would have the balls to marry Ibiki," Tsume quips causing Naruto to bust out laughing.
Recovering, Naruto grins and answers Tsume.
"We're getting married before the baby is born, but we haven't even started working on all the details yet."
"You know,” Tsume eyes Naruto shrewdly, “it's not like there's a pause button where you can put the little one on hold. They like to come out when you least expect it."
"I know," Naruto nods. "And we're not putting off planning. We’re working on it. If we had our way, we wouldn’t be having a ceremony. Just sign the papers and a small gathering to celebrate." She grimaces in irritation before continuing, "Baa-chan wants a big, formal wedding, though."
"A small celebration fits you two better," Tsume nods in understanding. "Don't get your hopes up for one, though. Now that it's out you're the Yondaime's kid you'll be expected to have the full dog and pony show."
Kuromaru growls in annoyance at Tsume and the Haimaru brothers and Akamaru raise their heads to glare at her.
Noticing, she rolls her eyes.
"You guys are nin dogs, not trick poodles. Get over yourselves."
Naruto, Hana and Kiba watch in amusement as the ninken huff in annoyance before settling back down again.
"I'm sorry my clan and I failed you, Naruto," Tsume states quietly, capturing her attention again.
Naruto turns to gape at the older woman who nods.
"I thought I understood the Sandaime's teachings of the Will of Fire. Hell, I practically beat it into my clansmen's heads. In reality, I completely misunderstood," she sighs resignedly. "As a fellow citizen of Konoha and Leaf nin, I should've been more supportive of you growing up. Regardless of your circumstances, as a comrade and clan leader I should've demonstrated more concern than I did."
"But it wasn't like anyone in your clan harassed or attacked me when I was a kid," Naruto protests, shaking her head.
"No, no Inuzuka did, but we didn't do much to stop it either, did we?" When Naruto doesn't answer, she continues. "I know Aburame Shibi visited you the other day. He told me what he said and the man has a good point. As the largest clans in the village, not saying or doing anything to stop the abuse was the same as giving permission. Whether it was you, or some other child, it was our moral obligation to step in and help. I don't have the right to ask for your forgiveness, but I hope someday you can."
Naruto struggles to swallow the brick in her throat. She's proud of the fact she didn't fall apart on them.
"There's nothing to forgive,” she quietly states, “but I forgive you anyway. Let's move past this."
Tsume smiles in gratitude, scaring Naruto a little because it looked more predatory than motherly. Without warning, the older woman lunges forward, engulfing her in another hug. Kiba and Hana share a smile before spending the next half hour attempting to drag Tsume away from their chat so Naruto can rest.
When they finally leave, Naruto is emotionally exhausted. However, she determinately finishes repotting the Ficus tree before heading off for a nap. She spends the rest of the day sleeping until Iruka wakes her for dinner hours later.
It's three whole days before Naruto has to endure another visit from a clan head. For once she isn't in the middle of an activity or project. However, since she's having an off day she is not interested in any visitors. When she feels, rather than hears, the knock reverberating through the apartment, she decides it's best to answer before half the building is brought down with the next knock.
Rising from where she’s reclining on the sofa, she opens the front door to see Akimichi Choza and his wife, Chika, crowding the doorway. No longer surprised by all these visits from Konoha's clan heads, Naruto promptly ushers them inside.
Chika hugs Naruto and hands her a large paper sack with handles.
"Choji said you were having severe morning sickness. I made you some food that I was able to stomach during my pregnancy with Choji. There's enough for Iruka and Kakashi as well."
"Thank you!" Naruto bows gratefully while still holding the sack. "You didn't have to go through all that trouble."
"I still remember how awful the morning sickness can get,” the older brunette smiles fondly. "I would've had Choji drop the food off sooner, but he's still on a mission."
Naruto nods in understanding before gesturing over at the sofa.
"Please make yourselves comfortable while I take the bag into the kitchen."
The couple nod and move over to the sofa. As she walks into the kitchen, she barely holds back a grimace of discomfort. Normally, she'd be overjoyed at being lucky enough to get a large bag full of home cooked food from Choji's mom. Unfortunately, she's currently going through a phase where even smells cause her stomach to turn.
Gratefully abandoning the aromatic bag on the kitchen counter, she returns to the living room and settles in the armchair since there’s no way she could fit on the sofa with the two of them. They exchange the usual small talk as Choza and his wife ask the usual questions about her health, the baby and the wedding.
Finally, Choza eyes Naruto for a few minutes before speaking.
"I must humbly apologize for not being there for you while you were growing up, Naruto. It is something I should've thought of doing years ago." The large man pauses briefly in thought. "Well, there’s a lot more I should’ve done years ago. I didn't think minding only the affairs of my clan and family equaled acceptance of your childhood treatment in the eyes of the village. I'm ashamed to admit that it wasn't until I spoke with Aburame Shibi that I realized my mistakes."
When Choza pauses, his wife places a comforting hand on his arm and squeezes gently.
"I was out there helping to defend the village when the Kyuubi attacked, so I knew you were our salvation, not the cause of the tragedy of that night. And our clan understands better than anyone what it's like to be singled out for things that are beyond our control. I could've let you know that despite being the demon jailer you weren't alone and I'm sorry I didn't."
Naruto takes a few minutes to absorb Choza's words. She thought it was one of the sweetest things she's ever heard and barely manages to keep from bursting into tears. Sighing mentally, she realizes that's another reason she dislikes being pregnant, the surging hormones.
When she's finally able to speak, she smiles softly at the couple.
"You have no idea how much it means to me that you and the other clan heads feel the need to apologize to me for things you guys have no control over. Thank you."
Chika bursts into tears before rushing off the sofa to smother Naruto in another hug. Naruto barely holds it together until the woman releases her and Choza takes his turn hugging Naruto. When they’re all back under control, they continue chatting.
"I'm grateful that you don't seem to be suffering from too many pregnancy symptoms, Naruto," Chika observes. "Maybe we're visiting at a good time of the day. Kakashi did emphasize after lunch would be perfect for a visit."
Naruto's brain screeches to a halt. She definitely recalls thinking after the Inuzuka's visit how strange it was that the Aburame and Inuzuka happen to visit when Kakashi wasn't around. Iruka has her usual academy and Mission Room duties, but Kakashi has been home more often than not. She’d blown off as coincidence.
Until now.
"Really?" Naruto states, barely keeping her good humor. "Kakashi has always been astute like that. I didn't even think about what time of the day was good for me!"
She shares a laugh with the two Akimichi while seething inside. She feels stupid for not noticing Kakashi conveniently disappeared earlier from the apartment when the Akimichi's show up. She just passed him in the hallway before settling down on the sofa when they knocked.
It isn't much longer until Choza and Chika take their leave, promising to check on her again soon and giving Naruto plenty of time to plan her revenge on her beloved big brother.
Later Kakashi and Iruka are surprised and pleased by the food the Akimichi brought. Naruto enjoys the bounty as well until her nausea rears its nasty, little head again and dinner makes a return trip, only serving to add to her existing irritation at Kakashi.
The next morning Naruto manages to get Iruka alone while her target showers.
“Hey, Iruka?”
“Hmmm?” the brunette hums in acknowledgement while continuing to work on their breakfast.
“Did you know Kakashi’s been disappearing during Shibi’s, Tsume’s and Choza’s visits?”
Iruka pauses in mixing the pancake batter to frown while her brain processes what Naruto said. Looking over at said redhead slicing fruit into a bowl on the counter nearby prompts a confirming nod.
“Yep. He was kind enough to not only tell them all what time of day would be good for me, but he’d magically evaporate out of existence right when they’d show up.” At Iruka’s deepening scowl, she emphasizes, “He was home each time right before they showed up. I thought the timing was coincidental until Chika mentioned Kakashi made it clear when I’d be up for visitors and I just passed his sorry ass in the hallway not five minutes before they knocked.”
Naruto enjoys watching Iruka’s expression grow stormy. It’s always entertaining to watch the older woman get mad as long as it wasn’t at her.
“I’ve got an idea on how to educate my former jounin sensei on why it’s never a good idea to piss off a hormonal pregnant woman. Wanna help?”
The familiar mischievous gleam lighting up her big sister’s eyes is all the answer the redhead needs, prompting her to quickly outline her plan.
Luckily for them, Kakashi is heading out that morning on an escort mission that’s taking him out of the village for about five days. It’s not until a day into the mission he realizes he doesn’t have his beloved Icha Icha with him like usual. Shrugging it off he forgets about it and focuses on the mission.
When he returns home he finally remembers and goes searching for it. It doesn’t take long to realize he can’t find any of his books after discovering their designated bookshelf in the closet is completely barren. When he finally caves, he reluctantly seeks Iruka out to ask her, finding her sitting at the dining room table grading. He wastes several more minutes debating inwardly. He learned the hard way a long time ago; she really hates being disturbed while grading.
"Um, Iruka?"
He inwardly flinches when her hard gaze looks up.
"Yes?"
Swallowing slightly he plunges on.
"Have you seen any of my Icha Icha books? I've looked everywhere."
Dropping her gaze back down to continue grading, Iruka absently asks, "Did you check the balcony?"
"Ah, no, I haven't," Kakashi frowns, puzzled as to why she'd ask that.
Having no idea why he should look out there when he'd never leave them there, he shrugs and follows her suggestion. It was better than risking her wrath by disturbing her further.
Stepping over to the sliding door that opens onto the balcony, Kakashi draws back the vertical blinds. All movement stops as he stares through the glass. Recovering his senses somewhat he opens the door and steps outside.
He stands transfixed in stupefied horror to see every volume of his beloved collection individually frozen in solid blocks of ice about 30 cm wide by 30 cm high and about 10 cm thick stacked like a playing card pyramid while a large puddle slowly expands at the base. The bright covers of each book can be seen through the ice even if the titles can’t. The uppermost blocks glow in the golden hues of the fading afternoon light. If it didn't involve his pride and joy, he would've found the display quite impressive.
Sensing Naruto and Iruka's presence behind him, he reluctantly turns around. He knows he's in deep shit for some unknown reason for them to touch his precious collection. The two women stand inside the open patio door with their arms crossed. Their expressions do not bode well.
No doubt in Kakashi's mind about it. He is nothing but screwed.
An hour later Naruto finishes reading him the riot act, leaving Kakashi's ears ringing as he sits in the armchair while she paces a rut in the floor.
“I just don’t get why’d you leave me to deal with the clan heads all by myself when you know damn well I’m not comfortable around them,” Naruto angrily huffs. “What’s next? Visits from the other jounin sensei? ANBU?”
Halting next to the armchair she places both hands on her hips and glares down at him.
“You helped badger me into revealing my pregnancy and all the shit that’s been going on to everyone when I didn’t want to, so you’re partially to blame for them coming around when I’m not remotely feeling sociable.”
She watches his eye drop to the floor in shame.
“And Naruto isn’t in any condition to be shouldering all this stress alone, Kakashi,” Iruka scolds, prompting him to meet her disapproving gaze from where she sat on the sofa. “Not when her symptoms have been so severe lately.”
Although Iruka didn't say it, he can see the silent question, 'Are you abandoning her again?'
Rising to his feet, he pulls Naruto into a hug.
“I’m sorry, Naruto,” he apologizes. “I swear on my clan honor not to pull that shit again or leave you hanging.”
When she pulls back a little, he can see most of the anger left her eyes.
“You better not or your books will be better known as Ashes Ashes,” she warns. “You’re just lucky I bothered sealing each copy in plastic before freezing them.”
“And it’s probably going to take a month for them to thaw out,” he resignedly sighs. “How did you manage to freeze them all in such a short time?” he asks in curiosity.
“I’m not telling, but if you annoy me anymore today I’ll gladly thaw them out quickly with a fire jutsu,” she offers with a malicious glint in her eyes.
“I’ll pass,” he replies, eliciting smirks from both women.
Not long after the infamous Icha Icha Igloo Incident, as Iruka likes to call it, Naruto gets a really surprising visit from Hyuga Hiashi. He didn't knock on their door until two days later when she’s alone folding laundry. This time Kakashi is legitimately out on a mission and Iruka is working in the academy.
When she answers the door she’s stunned to see him of all people standing on the doorstep.
"Pardon my intrusion, Naruto. Could you spare a few minutes of your time?" Hiashi calmly inquires.
Dreading what the reserved man had to say, Naruto reluctantly steps aside.
"Uh, sure. Come on in. Uh, would you like some tea or something?" she asks, hesitantly, remembering all too vividly Iruka's scolding for not offering any of her previous visitors any refreshment.
"No thank you," Hiashi declines graciously.
She leads the way over to the sofa and sits down while he eases into the armchair.
"Congratulations on your engagement and pregnancy,” he begins once they’re settled. “I understand things are going well with your pregnancy, but plans have not been finalized regarding the wedding yet."
"Yeah, I’ve been doing better," Naruto nods, trying to relax. It isn't like she's the one who went to visit him. "Baa-chan says everything looks good and progressing like it should. And, no, Ibiki and I haven't finalized the details regarding the wedding. We're trying, but he's busy with his duties and there's a lot to decide," she grouses, forgetting whom she's talking to.
Hiashi offers a rare smile, startling her. Naruto gapes at him stupidly as he continues, pointedly ignoring her shocked expression.
"The reason I stopped by today is because there are things I must discuss with you. I must admit learning you are the Yondaime's daughter shamed me a great deal and it is only fitting that I seek you out and personally apologize for my offenses."
Naruto can't help but stare at the man. Never in a million years did she think Hyuga Hiashi was capable of apologizing for anything.
Unperturbed by her silence, the Hyuga continues.
"I always admired Minato-sama long before he assumed the seat of Hokage. He treated every comrade like a friend, regardless of how they treated him. Instead of simply utilizing his brilliance to make a name for himself, he focused on figuring out how to save as many of his comrades as he could. The end result was not only helping to end the Third Shinobi World War, but saving many lives in the process." Hiashi smirks slightly, adding, "Thus still managing to make a name for himself regardless."
Becoming serious again, he pauses in thought before continuing.
"It should not have been difficult to heed his dying wish, regardless of the fact you are his child." He pauses again to bow low from his sitting position. "My apologies for holding status and family connections in higher regard than loyalty and strong ethics. You accomplished more than the pampered prodigy of any clan. You are a fellow citizen of Konoha, a village my clan has long sworn service to. As clan leader, I bear the shame of my clan for tacitly condoning your treatment over the years. This is not simply because you're the Yondaime's child, but because it was our moral obligation as fellow citizens."
Naruto takes a few minutes to process the clan head’s speech. There is no doubt in her mind he's sincere and his humility is genuine.
Finally, she meets his gaze.
"It's taken me awhile to understand, but one thing I've learned is it's never too late to start fresh. We can't change what's happened and there's too much going on now to bother dwelling in the past. I accept your apologies and think it's time to move on."
"Thank you, Naruto," Hiashi smiles and nods. "I will not take up anymore of your time, but before I go, I invite you to stay as my guest at the Hyuga compound if you ever feel the need for a brief respite. The offer will remain open for an indefinite period of time."
Stunned and uncertain how to reply, Naruto nods, "Thank you and I accept."
Rising to his feet, Naruto ushers him out the door. Automatically moving over to the sofa, she flops down on it and stretches out, reeling from his words. She then thinks about all the visits she's had so far from the various clan heads. She appreciates them taking time out of their busy schedules to visit and is grateful they aren't over emphasizing her parentage.
It's surprising they’re even bothering to acknowledge her childhood, much less apologize for ignoring the truth. A small part of her isn’t certain she can trust their sincerity in promising to support her from now on, but it's nice to hear their acknowledgements nonetheless.
Another weeks passes before a knock sounds on the front door of Kakashi and Iruka’s apartment.
“I was wondering when you two would finally show up,” Kakashi comments when he opens the door to find Nara Shikaku with his wife Yoshino standing on the other side.
“I wouldn’t want to steal the other clan leader’s thunder,” Shikaku drolly retorts, causing Yoshino to roll her eyes.
“Come on in,” Kakashi invites them. “I take it you’re here to see Naruto?”
“Yes, if she’s feeling up to it,” Yoshino answers, letting her husband maneuver her to sit with him on the sofa.
“I’m pretty sure she is. I’ll let her know,” he replies, disappearing down the hallway. Stopping at the bathroom door he knocks. “Naruto, Shikaku and Yoshino are here to see you.”
“Okay, I’ll be out in a minute,” her muffled voice replies.
“I’ll let them know. I’m heading to the tower, do you need me to stay?”
“Nah, you better get going before Baa-chan filets your ass. She hates it when you’re late.”
“I know,” he cheerfully states.
Sighing heavily, Naruto finishes her business. It’s annoying he can’t stay, but this time she knows he isn't ditching her since she’d just answered the door when the ANBU arrived minutes before Shikamaru’s parents.
At that point, she’s seriously thinking of asking Inoichi to reserve her a room in the psyche ward. She's been slowly going out of her mind at the sheer number of decisions that go into planning a wedding.
As she washes her hands in the sink, she thinks back to her and Ibiki's visit with Baa-chan a couple weeks prior.
"C'mon, Baa-chan!" Naruto pleaded. "Ibiki and I can take a couple of days off to run up to the capital and elope. We can even just sign the papers here in the office. What's the big deal?"
Ibiki turned his head from the shorter redhead to look at Tsunade. His Hokage sat behind her desk with her arms crossed. She looked frustrated and he knew it wasn't because of the paperwork covering her desk or the fact it wasn't lunchtime.
He certainly understood the frustration since he was feeling it too. Although, his mirrored Naruto's more.
"Hokage-sama," he began, drawing the blonde's annoyed attention to himself. "I agree with Naruto. Signing the marriage certificate or eloping are better options than the stress and aggravation planning a wedding ceremony is causing her."
Ibiki didn't fail to notice the relieved and appreciative look on Naruto's face out of the corner of his eye. He also didn't fail to notice Tsunade's scowl became more pronounced.
"A formal ceremony isn't so you two can show off," Tsunade growls out through gritted teeth. "You're going through a formal ceremony to prove to the world it's not a sham and you're going to have a big ceremony whether you two like it or not!"
Naruto's raging hormones beat out common sense when she snapped, "Then why don't you get engaged, Baa-chan, and have a big, formal circus and tell us about it later?"
Days later, Naruto's ears are still ringing from Tsunade's tirade.
However, she and Ibiki kept lobbying for a simple ceremony. That was until the clan heads started asking when was the big wedding and by the time Hiashi visits her, she knew she was screwed.
Finally emerging from the bathroom, she wanders towards the living room and smiles at the Nara couple.
“’Morning! Do you guys want some tea or something?”
“Good morning, Naruto, and no thank you,” Yoshino declines politely.
“Good morning and nothing for me, thanks,” Shikaku also declines as Naruto settles into the armchair. "I know you're probably not surprised that we stopped by to visit you,” he continues. “We held off on coming sooner to avoid overwhelming you with too many visitors at once."
"You have no idea how much I appreciate that," Naruto replies facetiously, her mouth quirking into a grin.
"Has it been that bad?" Yoshino asks.
"Well," Naruto drawls, scratching behind her ear, "at times, yeah. Not with the clan heads, but in the beginning some of my friends thought spacing out visits meant waiting until the door shut behind the last one."
Yoshino's eyes narrow as she clucks her tongue disapprovingly.
"There's a reason Tsunade-sama said not to overwhelm you. Shikamaru said she explained things quite clearly why it was important to give you some breathing room."
"They all got a little overeager," Naruto shrugs with a smile. "It was big news that blew them away, so they just wanted to hear for themselves and from the source." She pauses to smirk. "Plus, they were all too scared to approach Ibiki and ask him."
Shikaku and Yoshino laugh with her at her joke.
“Congratulations on your pregnancy and engagement, Naruto,” Yoshino sincerely states. “I understand your symptoms have been all over the map, are you doing better?”
“Thanks,” Naruto accepts with an appreciative smile. “There are good days and bad. Honestly, I’m just focusing on functioning until the worst passes, which according to Baa-chan will either be in my later trimesters or when the baby is born.”
The trio shares another laugh. As they calm Shikaku decides to take his turn again.
"Naruto, I'm sure you already know why we're here. It's not just to offer our congratulations. I wanted to apologize for our part in not doing more for you during your childhood."
Cocking her head, she frowns slightly in confusion.
"Out of all the clans, the Nara has the least to apologize for. Shikamaru told me you never discouraged him from playing with me like most of the other parents. He said you told him to do what he thought was best. That always meant a lot to me," she finishes quietly.
Shocked, Yoshino blinks at her while Shikaku shrewdly scrutinizes her before asking, "You certainly never run short of surprises, do you, Naruto?"
"It’d ruin my reputation if I did," she shrugs with a mischievous grin. "Besides, it's all water under the bridge. Most of the clans and their members never gave me a lot of problems. Yeah, there were some shinobi, but they were always the exception. I had more problems with the civilians, but that doesn't make them all evil either. They just didn't understand shinobi concepts and what my dad did as well as a shinobi would."
"That's very magnanimous of you, Naruto," Yoshino nods approvingly.
"Mag-nanny-mouse? What?" Naruto fumbles, attempting to repeat the word the brunette used.
"Mag-nan-ee-muss," Shikaku repeats, grinning more at the tension he feels from Yoshino attempting to curb her famous temper than at Naruto's confusion over the word. "It means you're very forgiving and generous."
"Oh, well, why didn't you just say that?" she asks nonplussed.
Yoshino takes a deep, calming breath and with a forced smile says, "Never mind. So, how's the wedding planning coming along?"
The older woman almost cackles at Naruto's crestfallen look. Almost. She tamps down her sadistic side to watch the redhead sigh wearily while running a frustrated hand through her hair.
Although Naruto is getting sick of getting asked about the ceremony, she knows it’s inevitable Yoshino would ask since binders filled with invitation samples, catering menus and other wedding crap litters the kotatsu in front of them. Before heading to the bathroom she was trying to make heads or tails of the garbage.
"Well," Naruto begins reluctantly. "I can at least say the wedding will take place before I give birth." She weakly smiles, before adding, "Maybe."
Shikaku arches a brow from his reclined position on the sofa with both arms extended out along the back.
Yoshino frowns as she leans forward to pick up a binder to idly browse through the contents.
"It looks like you've got a pretty good start by giving yourself plenty to choose from, Naruto."
Groaning, Naruto drops her face into both hands.
"It's driving me nuts!" her muffled voice moans. Her hands fall away as she looks at Yoshino in exasperation. "There's just so much to decide on! And it doesn't help knowing Anko put herself in charge of the bachelorette party. I hate admitting this, but I'm scared of what she's planning. Anyone else I wouldn't worry. I know Ino won't have strippers at the baby shower!"
Both Yoshino and Shikaku can't resist chuckling.
"Don't worry about it,” Yoshino smiles reassuringly. “I'll make sure Anko doesn't go overboard or goes against your wish of no strippers."
Naruto stares at the brunette in surprise before closing her eyes briefly and exhaling heavily in relief. Anko would never dare cross Yoshino. Shikamaru's mom is one of the few people Anko truly fears.
"Thank you," she states sincerely.
Yoshino's smile widens as an incredibly insane thought crosses Naruto's mind. She might be throwing away what little remains of her sanity, but since it's pretty much gone already, she might as well go out with a bang.
"Yoshino," Naruto begins hesitantly, "Could you please help me plan the wedding?"
The older brunette reels in shock for a few moments. Feeling the need to explain, Naruto plunges on.
"I'm sorry to bug you for help, but I get tired so easily even with doing light yoga to keep my energy up. I can't make any headway. It bugs me that I can't get anything done and Baa-chan is insisting Ibiki and I have a formal ceremony when we want to elope. I already bug Iruka and Kakashi as it is and Ibiki's busy. I really need help." With a wry smile she adds, “Kimonos are easily adjustable, but I don't want to waddle down the aisle ‘cause I took too long to plan.”
Yoshino remains in silent consideration. She knows Naruto rarely got help growing up and Shikamaru told her how stubborn the redhead is about doing things on her own. Yet, she can see the stress taking an emotional toll on her and realizes how hard it must be for her to ask for help.
"I'd be honored to help," she accepts with a warm smile.
Yoshino knows she made the right choice if the huge smile of gratitude lighting up Naruto's face is any indication.
Although she’s always been slightly afraid of Shikamaru's mom, Naruto can admit the woman is far more organized than she can ever hope to be. If her wedding is going to become a circus, she needs a competent ringmaster like Yoshino.
“There’s a few things I need Ibiki and you to do so we can progress in the planning,” Yoshino states before spending the next few minutes outlining what they have to do.
Shikaku is amused that Naruto asked his wife to help plan her wedding. Secretly, he pities Ibiki because the poor man doesn't know what's in store for him with Yoshino to get involved.
"We'll have everything together within the next week," Naruto promises once the older brunette finishes.
“We better head out,” Shikaku suggests to his wife.
At her nod they rise to their feet and move towards the door.
“As word spreads you’ll likely experience more people coming around looking for the inside scoop,” he informs Naruto. “If it becomes too much for you and Ibiki, come and be our guests. We’re located too far out of the village for anyone to bother coming around to harass you,” he smirks.
“I’ll probably take you up on that,” she grins. “Hiashi invited me over too, so moving between the two should keep that garbage to a minimum.”
“If you’re up to it, come over in a couple days and we can start deciding on some things like the invitations,” Yoshino suggests.
“Sure thing,” Naruto agrees and closes the door after they leave.
Leaning against the door, she smiles in relief. Silently she muses the only big thing left to deal with is remodeling her parent’s home into her and Ibiki’s new home. He’s tried helping as much as possible with that and the wedding plans, but work has been busy for him lately. She tries not to let herself be too irritated with him over it because it’s the nature of his job and he’s really good at it. Straightening up she steps back over to the kotatsu and begins cleaning the crap off the table before disappearing into her room for a much desired nap.
As the soggy days continue dragging on, Naruto ventures out less and less as word slowly spreads throughout the village of her pregnancy, engagement and true lineage. Despite her initial reluctance in allowing her friends to share the news with the rest of the world, she grudgingly agreed because it was better than Tsunade making a huge announcement. A lot of villagers tend to have notoriously selective hearing during speeches.
Granted, she’s noticing a significant change in attitude among many especially now they’re aware of whom her parents were, but she’s ambivalent about the tearful apologies over past offenses and behaviors. She's not certain if she should be glad to be acknowledged by the old hard liners or offended they're only being nicer because of her parents. It shouldn't matter whose child she was. All that should've mattered was that she was a child used to save their lives.
Plus, the mea culpas make her errands run three times as long. Not good if her nausea and bladder kick into overdrive.
However, even if they don’t hold the meaning they should, she still appreciates the sentiments.
Coinciding with the awkward apologies, she’s also getting a clear reminder some truths people are incapable of accepting at face value. Some insist on knowing the details beyond what they’ve been told. In particular, she doesn’t like the invasive questions some ask, which has been a big factor in her reducing the frequency of her outings. It’s no one’s business how she and Ibiki got together or how good he is in bed. And those are the tame questions. She’s found some to be pretty crass and offensive, which is saying a lot since she once traveled with Jiraiya.
However, her scarcity doesn't discourage a few from aggressively seeking her out to get their answers.
During a visit with her former landlady, Naruto finds out the poor old lady has been badgered by nosy civilians and shinobi about her whereabouts when they get no answer knocking on her old apartment door. The old lady has kept her mouth shut and a broom handy to beat on anyone who refuses to accept her answer.
Of course, when Naruto isn’t found at her old apartment, they logically check Iruka and Kakashi’s place. A couple shinobi got a memorable, bruising reminder not to try badgering the infamous Copy Ninja. Especially at home. Ever.
Naruto tries silently taking it all in stride, but as usual, members of her personal flock of mother hens notice.
Sitting on the exam table she patiently waits while Tsunade takes her blood pressure. She doesn’t notice the frown marring the blonde’s face until she reinflates the cuff.
“What’s wrong, Tsunade-sama?” Ibiki asks, having noticed the frown.
“Yeah, ‘cause it’s a bit uncomfortable repeatedly getting my blood flow constricted with that thing,” Naruto grouses.
Taking the stethoscope off her ears and leaving it dangling around her neck, Tsunade glares at the redhead while none too gently ripping the cuff off her arm.
“Your blood pressure is running high,” the blonde accuses. “Yoshino is planning the wedding and Yamato is spearheading the house renovations, so what shit are you doing that you aren’t supposed to?”
“Well since I can’t even manage a desk job or some light training, there ain’t nothing left to occupy my time, is there?” Naruto sarcastically growls back. “I’m constantly stuck at home where gossipy morons can find me.”
“What do you mean ‘where gossipy morons can find you’?” Ibiki pointedly asks, eyeing his fiancée shrewdly.
Caught off guard since she hadn’t mentioned what’s been going on to anyone, Naruto nervously fumbles for an answer.
“Well, um…”
Not letting her favorite redhead off the hook, Tsunade astutely asks, “Could this have to do with the sudden rise in assault reports? Because there have been a few cases treated at the hospital where the shinobi involved refused to name their assailant, but rumor has it Kakashi was responsible. Even your old landlady has filed counter complaints of harassment against those bitching about her beating them with a broom.”
Naruto squirms uncomfortably under their intense gazes until she caves.
“Word is getting around about me and Ibiki and everything,” she explains with a weary sigh. “I don’t go outside often anymore because of that, but when I do I’ll get people apologizing for past shit. That’s not so bad, but it’s the ones asking personal questions about our relationship, like they can’t believe it’s true, who’ve become royal pain in the asses. Kinda like what Sakura used to do without the vandalism because you’ve already seen what Kakashi will do if they get anywhere close to crossing that line.”
“Are they coming around when you stay at my place and I’m not home?” Ibiki asks, his angry eyes belying his calm demeanor.
“Nope,” Naruto shakes her head.
“I don’t think anyone is stupid enough to go near your threshold,” Tsunade drolly quips, causing Naruto to grin. “How often is this happening?” she asks, becoming serious.
Naruto looks away, trying to avoid their gazes.
“Naruto?” Ibiki prods.
“Several times a day depending on how long I’m alone,” she reluctantly answers.
With a groan Tsunade slaps a hand to her face.
“You know, you’re not making it easier on anyone by keeping quiet about shit like this, gaki,” she sighs, dropping her hand away. “It’s probably a lot worse than you’re making it sound and that’s what’s causing your blood pressure to rise.” She cuts Naruto off when she starts to protest. “I know it’s hard to change your thinking, gaki, but the stress is risking the baby.”
A scared expression crosses Naruto’s face. Ibiki reaches out and gently takes her hand, giving it a squeeze and prompting her to look at him.
“I think we should get our comrades involved,” he suggests. “We should also ask Hiashi for some assistance.”
“But I don’t…” she begins to protest, but is cut off by a gloved finger gently pressing against her lips.
“They wouldn’t have offered their help if they didn’t mean it. Besides,” he smirks while dropping his hand away. “I’m sure Hiashi can spare a few clansman to act as roving pest repellents since I can’t be around enough to do it myself.”
He and Tsunade watch Naruto consider his words.
“This is the best way to get the message out you deserve more respect and consideration than what’s being currently shown,” he continues. A dark expression shadows his face as he coldly adds, “It’s better than me giving each perpetrator a personal tour of T&I.”
At Naruto’s frown, Tsunade adds, “With my permission.”
Naruto looks between her fiancé and Tsunade. Closing her eyes briefly she sighs in defeat.
“Fine. You guys are gonna do it anyway, whether I like it or not.” Pinning them with a glare she adds, “No one better go overboard.”
“I doubt anyone will,” Tsunade replies. Her gaze becomes pointed as she emphasizes, “You need to relax more. You told me Hiashi and Shikaku invited you to stay with them. I suggest you take them up on that until the harassment completely stops.”
“Yeah, I will,” Naruto wearily agrees.
“I’ll see you next week, gaki. Okay, Ibiki, take her home,” Tsunade orders.
“Yes, Tsunade-sama,” Ibiki nods.
Gently taking Naruto’s elbow, he helps her off the table and escorts her out of the hospital through the busy village streets. He definitely notices the pointing and stares and catches snippets of not so hushed whisperings speculating about their relationship. When not promptly silencing the whispers with a freezing glare he’s subtly watching Naruto and noting the tension in her body.
“How about you pack a bag and stay with me for a few days until we can arrange a visit with either the Hyuga or the Nara?”
“Yeah, I guess so,” she sullenly mumbles.
“What’s the problem? Don’t want to stay with them?” he asks, surprised by her attitude.
“It’s not that,” she huffs in irritation. “It feels like I’m going into hiding. I don’t like running away.”
Ibiki contemplates her words as they turn a corner onto the lane that leads to Kakashi and Iruka’s apartment.
“You can also look at it as a vacation to visit with your friends. Something you didn’t have the luxury to do before because of your work schedule.” Meeting her surprised gaze, he adds, “Life is only going to get more complicated. Hinata and Shikamaru are their clans heirs and once they take over, there won’t be time to visit with them, especially once you become Hokage. Now would be a good time to take advantage of this opportunity and enjoy some free time with them.”
He lets Naruto think about it as they enter the apartment. Shrugging off their coats, they hang them then head into her room. Ibiki perches on the edge of the bed while she starts gathering her stuff together on top. She finally breaks the silence minutes later.
“It would be nice to spend some time with Hinata and Hanabi,” she muses while she works. “The Hyuga compound is nice and self-contained, like a little village within the village.”
“True,” Ibiki agrees. “You’ll be able to move freely within their walls without being bothered. Plus, there’s a few Hyuga who are practicing medics.”
“Yeah. I stayed with them a couple of times after my breakdown at Hinata’s insistence. It definitely helped a lot,” she quietly admits.
Shaking off the memory she packs her clothes into the bag she pulled out of the closet. When she finishes she disappears from the room, returning minutes later with her personal care items.
Closing up the bag she steps over to the nightstand and grabs a pen and the pad of paper sitting on top. Sitting on the bed she starts writing on it.
“What are you doing?” Ibiki arches a brow.
“Writing a note to Iruka and letting her know where I’m going or she’ll go nuts on my ass later for not telling her.”
Ibiki chuckles, watching her rip the top sheet off the pad before returning it and the pen on the nightstand. Climbing to her feet she heads out the room. Picking up her bag he shoulders it and follows her out into the front rooms just as she places the note on the dining room table.
Looking over her shoulder she smiles as she notices he has her bag.
“That’s it. I’m ready.”
Ibiki nods and steps over with her to retrieve their coats. He helps her shrug hers on then slips his on and shoulders her bag again before leaving the apartment.
“Tsunade-sama mentioned Yamato earlier,” he begins as they start up the street. “I’ve been meaning to ask you if work has even begun on the house.”
“I have no idea,” she replies offhandedly. Without looking at him, she feels his eyes and knows he’s arched a questioning brow at her, prompting her to roll her eyes. “Yamato, Iruka and Kakashi commandeered the renovations and shut me out.”
“Something’s likely to come up they’re going to have to ask our opinion on,” Ibiki observes while frowning in confusion.
“According to Iruka, they’re fucking mind readers who know all the changes and improvements we want and claim they can handle it,” she snipes.
“Well, we were very specific in our discussions after we saw the house,” he points out reasonably.
“It’s my responsibility to be more involved,” she huffs irritably. “I’m relying heavily on Yoshino to take care of the wedding planning, so I’ve got the time to observe at least. But they’re insisting I stay out of it, saying they’ve got plenty of help from our friends they managed to sucker in to help.”
Ibiki chuckles again.
“It sounds like they want it to be a surprise and you’re annoyed at being excluded out of boredom.”
He grins at her glare. Reaching around her shoulder he pulls her close.
“I know how to keep you occupied,” he quietly leers.
His grin turns seductive and a wicked glint lights up his eye as he leans in close and whispers into her ear. Pulling back he watches in amusement as her face flushes and her blue eyes deepen in desire.
Without another word, they tacitly pick up their pace a little to arrive at his place faster.
Within a few days Naruto incorporates overnight stays with the Hyuga into her routine, which prove to be nice little getaways from nosy villagers with the clan acting as an effective buffer against their nonsense. A couple of the more consistently aggressive villagers try complaining to an unsympathetic Hiashi about the injuries some of his clansmen gave them, prompting him to coolly point out that maybe they should not attempt to sneak into his clan compound like common thieves.
Unfortunately, Hyuga tradition prevents Ibiki from staying with Naruto when she's there. He makes it a point to stop by after work and join them for dinner. Then they spend the rest of the evening walking the inner courtyards or sitting by one of the many fountains or koi ponds talking quietly.
Since admitting what Sasuke did to her and the miscarriage, Naruto has been dealing with a new crop of nightmares. Iruka and Kakashi comfort her when she's home, but Ibiki proves more effective when she's with him by easing her awake. He encourages her to talk about it before comforting her back to sleep. However, because they consider Ibiki sleeping with her improper, Naruto finds it harder to cope with the nightmares at the Hyuga compound.
It doesn’t help when Hanabi and Hinata are busy she’s going out of her mind with boredom. Sometimes she’ll entertain herself by annoying Neji, but that’s only if he’s home and not on a mission. She desperately itches for a mission or a good training session. Unfortunately, her constant fatigue keeps her sidelined.
She still regularly attends her therapy appointments with Inoichi, but once a week isn’t enough to keep her occupied and the sessions are often emotionally draining and exhausting.
Inoichi is certainly concerned by all the stress she's under. Despite Naruto being open and cooperative during their sessions, her situation is far more complicated than anticipating the birth of her first child and planning a wedding.
During their latest session, he allows Naruto to take the lead as usual. She can't resist worrying about the village reaction to her marriage and impending pregnancy. Despite the initial shocked, but positive reactions, she fears aggressive backlashes later. She believes the idea of her having a baby isn't going to ever be accepted by those who are firmly convinced she's the demon.
Then there's Sakura's reaction. They may no longer interact, but that doesn't mean she has let go of her anger. She was always good at holding grudges and notorious for lashing out physically.
And naturally Sasuke dominates her worries the most. She's certain he'll return and has no idea how to deal with the situation.
Inoichi sighs softly while letting the silence stretch out after Naruto finishes laying bare her concerns.
"Naruto, you know there are things you can never plan for. Not when there are so many outside factors beyond your control. You're an effective kunoichi because you adapt quickly to those unknowns."
Naruto groans softly as she slouches further into the sofa they're sitting on.
"But that was everyone's mistake," she argues wearily, looking up at the ceiling. "No one wanted to think Sasuke would take off. They refused to grasp that their precious Uchiha could turn traitor."
Pausing she closes her eyes and takes a deep breath. Opening her eyes, her gaze falls to the surface of the coffee table in front of her. In a softer voice she continues.
"I sure as hell didn't think he'd do the things he did to me. I should've figured he'd try anything to hurt me, even if I couldn't begin imagining what he'd do."
Inoichi nods and reluctantly admits, "You have a point and should be concerned about Sasuke. However, you can't let that be your only concern and you can't let your concerns be your sole focus. You need to let yourself relax and live, Naruto."
“I’m trying,” she reluctantly agrees. “It’s hard, but I don’t want to be caught flat footed.”
“It’s affecting your health and putting the baby at risk,” he points out. “Tsunade-sama told me about the fainting spells you’ve been experiencing.” He nods when her surprised gaze snaps to him. “Granted, it’s a typical symptom of pregnancy, but your high blood pressure readings she’s been recording are a cause for concern and shows how much all of this is weighing on you.”
With a soft groan she closes her eyes briefly and drops her head heavily against the back of the sofa.
“Yeah, you’re right ‘cause I can’t blame that on family history.” Opening her eyes to gaze at the ceiling she runs a frustrated hand through her hair. “Baa-chan had Shizune nee-chan check my parent’s medical records and high blood pressure doesn’t run in the family on either side.”
She pauses again to collect her thoughts.
“I know I’ve got a hell of a lot more support and protection now than I used to. I trust a lot more people than I used to. But there’s no guarantees. All it’s gonna take is the right moment for everything to go straight to hell.”
“You’re absolutely right,” Inoichi agrees. “But your strength has always been in your unpredictability and determination to fight through whatever obstacles you face regardless of the odds.”
Naruto’s eyes widen as she gasps up at the ceiling in realization. Nodding again despite her not looking at him, he continues.
“You’ve survived things few could and never listened to anyone telling you that you couldn’t do something. Instead of focusing on ‘what if’s’ you can’t control, you should enjoy the present and deal with things as they come. The support you just acknowledged you have will help you through it.”
“Yeah,” she agrees with a fond smile. “I’ve been staying more with Ibiki since no one even dares fart in the direction of his apartment. And if not with him, I’ve been staying over at the Hyuga and Nara. I do feel more relaxed when I stay at any of those places.”
“I heard Shibi and Choza ended up inviting you to stay with their clans too.”
“You heard right, but Ibiki pointed out their places are within the village and too open. I thought about it and just didn’t feel comfortable even trying,” she reluctantly admits. Smirking, she adds, “Tsume outright told me she’s not inviting me to stay with her clan. She said she knows Kiba and I would get into some sort of pissing match and it’d get out of hand. She said she and Hana have way too much shit to do than to keep an eye on our sorry asses.”
Inoichi busts up laughing.
“Ah, the subtle poetry of Inuzuka Tsume,” he chuckles, calming somewhat. “Well, I hope you’re not offended I haven’t invited you over to stay with my family,” he smiles. “Aside from the fact I’m counseling you and I don’t want you to feel like we’re in a session 24/7, I know you won’t get the rest you need. Not with Ino chomping at the bit to go shopping.”
“I know,” she groans again, raising her hands to briefly cover her face.
"In a way, she’s got a point,” he reasons, causing her to look over with an arched brow. “Since you'll be showing soon, won't you need things like maternity clothes at least?"
"Yeah, I do, but I don't have the energy to go shopping," she sighs wearily. "It wouldn't be so bad if I get it over and done with quickly. I just can't. There are still people who won’t leave me alone to do what I have to. I could henge, but I'll tire fast and won't be able to hold it the entire time." A happy grin spreads across her face. "Fortunately I've already got all the baby furniture I need and practically new since my parents never got to use them. As for clothes, some of my mom's civilian clothes are actually maternity clothes so I can use those."
“That’s good,” he concedes. “However, don’t fall into using your fatigue as a crutch to avoid interacting with your fellow villagers.” At her confused frown he explains further. “Your fatigue won’t last forever and you shouldn’t allow your discomfort with other’s reaction be an excuse to completely avoid them. It’s a matter of them getting used to the idea you’re becoming a wife and mother and you getting used to living among them. Once the baby is born there will be no avoiding anything outside the comfortable sphere of friends and comrades you currently reside in.”
Naruto stares at the blond in confused shock, wondering if she’s been really been withdrawing further away from people instead of striving toward changing their minds about her. The idea continues to haunt her long after her session ends.
That’s only when more pressing issues aren’t occupying her time like planning the wedding and trying not to stress out where it risks the baby.
Staying with the Hyuga or the Nara clan truly helps, but she finds she prefers being a guest of the Nara more. They’re far more lax by comparison by allowing Ibiki to stay with her in the same room.
It also proves convenient for Yoshino to work with Naruto in planning the wedding as well as giving the older woman an excuse to closely monitor the redhead’s health. At times Naruto gets annoyed with Yoshino's bossy nature, but simultaneously likes being fussed over for a change.
She also likes being able to move freely at the Nara homestead, walking the outer grounds without an escort like with the Hyuga. She enjoys these walks since it's good exercise and mother hen approved as well as giving her the serene space to mull things over in her head. The worst she’ll encounter are groups of grazing deer instead of nosy neighbors that are only interested in the treats she makes sure to carry in her pockets.
Some of her time is spent helping Yoshino with the lighter chores, insisting she's pregnant not crippled and pointing out that if she doesn't have something to do she'll go out of her mind.
Naruto also likes spending time with Shikamaru when he isn't on missions. He was a huge help after her breakdown, quietly offering his steady support and was one of the ones who were there for her the most. He didn't mind if she stayed silent while he watched the clouds with Choji or played a solitary game of shogi. If she felt like talking, he'd listen and offer his observations. He never pushed her to talk or dismissed her feelings and was the steady, quiet presence she needed.
So whenever he’s home, as he’s been the past few days, Naruto follows him around while he completes his chores, sneakily helping whenever Yoshino isn’t looking.
Although the day is cloudy with the promise of rain later, it's still bright and sunny. Perched on the wooden fence of the corral being used for the pregnant does due to give birth over the next couple of months, Naruto tugs her coat closed, zipping it up against the cool wind chilling her. Looking up she watches Shikamaru approach, carrying two buckets of sliced fruits and grain. Halting a meter away, he adds them to the small collection of buckets sitting near the feeding trough fitted to fence to her immediate left.
"How does it feel, becoming a mom and a wife, Naruto?" he seems to randomly ask, lifting a bucket to dump it into the trough.
Sliding off the fence, Naruto grabs a rake leaning against the fence mixing the fruits as Shikamaru finishes dumping the other buckets into the trough.
"I don't know," she shrugs while working. "Scared for the most part."
Shikaku walks up carrying two hay bales in each hand and stacks them on the ground nearby.
"Don't let Yoshino catch you helping, Naruto," he warns. At her nod he continues, "Getting married and starting a family is a huge step."
"Yeah, but I feel like I tripped into it," she complains, removing the rake.
"Didn't you want to get married and start a family?" Shikamaru asks while moving to help his father cut the wires off the bales.
"No," she answers. At their stunned expressions when they pause to look at her, she sighs. "You know being a Jinchuriki means I've got a permanent target on my back. Being married and having kids means more targets."
"That's a worry every shinobi has, Naruto," Shikaku points out.
Handing Shikamaru a pitchfork, both men begin pitching the hay into the feeders lining the length of the fence.
"Ibiki knows about the risks all too well," he continues. "He's seen plenty of examples of enemies taking revenge on a shinobi's family during his career. It's among his duties to investigate such incidents and it's probably also why he hasn't gotten married and started a family yet. Ibiki's probably just as terrified of the situation as you are."
"Terrified?" Shikamaru scoffs while pitching hay. "The man eats terror for breakfast."
"No he doesn't," Naruto quips. "He prefers it for dessert after he's had his fill of chuunin candidates." Shikamaru rolls his eyes while his father grins. Becoming serious again, she adds, "It's a lot easier for others to hide their families. I'm too high profile and there's no remedy for that." Running a hand through her hair, she pauses to sigh heavily. "That's why I didn't plan on getting married or having kids. Not that guys were banging down my door, anyway."
"You certainly got both in a package deal," Shikamaru mutters. By this point the does are gathering to the food.
Naruto can't resist laughing with the two men.
"True," she chuckles.
"How did you and Ibiki end up together? No one imagined you two ever hooking up." Pausing in pitching the last of the hay to glare, Shikamaru adds, "Don't even think about saying you don't kiss and tell. I'm not asking for the details and you know it."
Knowing neither man would gossip, Naruto acquiesces with a soft sigh.
"It was just as much a surprise to us as to everyone else," she admits, causing both men pause again in their work to arch identical brows.
Rolling her eyes she reaches out and gently strokes the neck of one of the does. The animal pauses to nuzzle Naruto's hand before resuming eating.
"Ibiki walked me home from Baa-chan's New Years party to save Kakashi and Iruka from doing it. I invited him in for tea. I was buzzed from the drinking contest and planned on making some to take the edge off. ‘Cause it was New Years, I didn't want to chance some drunk thinking he could come around and try something."
Shikaku scowls as he grabs a couple of empty buckets.
"You're still being attacked by drunks?"
The question causes Shikamaru to pause from collecting the baling wire and remaining buckets. He frowns since this is the first he's hearing about the attacks. Privately he notes he'll have ask Naruto about it later.
Oblivious to Shikamaru’s reaction, Naruto shakes her head, carrying her rake as she follows them to the tool shed.
"Not for years, but better safe than sorry, y’know? Anyways, one thing led to another and we ended up together. We talked about it the next morning and decided to continue seeing each other. We both knew neither of us could commit fully to a serious relationship, but things happened so easily between us and we were attracted to each other, so we figured what the hell? Never in a million years did we think things were going to turn out the way they did."
"Obviously, since things moved so fast," Shikaku comments, opening the shed door for them.
"That's an understatement,” she rolls her eyes. “I don't recognize my life anymore." She hands the rake to Shikaku so he can hang it on a wall hook while Shikamaru rinses the buckets outside with a hose. "I was comfortable with the way things were, living the way I wanted to with my own apartment. Now I can't go back to that. And I didn't even plan it!" she grumbles. "I mean, it's not like Ibiki and I had been seeing each other long enough for marriage to be the next step. Hell, we hadn't been dating long enough to call each other boyfriend or girlfriend!"
Naruto crosses her arms and pouts as she follows Shikaku back outside. Shikamaru takes advantage of them being out of the way to put the buckets away.
"It feels like I've been kidnapped and forced into someone else's life and I haven't had the chance to breathe yet," she finishes, leaning against a nearby fencepost with Shikaku.
"Good point," Shikamaru agrees, emerging from the shed and securing the doors. "Things have been progressing at a break neck pace, but it actually fits your life, Naruto. You didn't have a typical upbringing and always did things your way."
Stepping over to the fence, he mimics their position against the fence on the opposite side of Naruto.
"No one would've faulted you if you decided to terminate this pregnancy," he continues. "You didn't even consider it. You intend to make it work, with or without Ibiki or anyone else helping you. You may not have planned it, but it's clear you're sure as hell not going to pass up the chance to have a family. Neither is Ibiki. It's obvious by how much he's been taking care of and helping you. And since you both clearly care for each other, then getting married and having a baby really isn't that terrifying a prospect, is it?"
Surprised, Naruto blinks a few times before breaking out in a huge smile. Leave it to Shikamaru to put things in perspective.
"Yeah, it isn't. I would've liked to have had more time to absorb everything, but there's nothing I can do about it," she admits seriously. "Yeah, we could wait on getting married and get to know each other better while taking care of the baby, but it's not such a bad thing to just get it over with now. And it's a good precaution to take with so many enemies after me."
Shikaku nods.
"It's good you're taking it in stride, but everyone is going to do everything they can to protect you and the baby. If not, if you believe Yoshino is scary now, everyone will truly understand the definition of the term 'hell hath no fury' once she's finished."
As Naruto laughs with them, she thinks truer words have probably never been said.
