When Naruto arrived at training later that day the first thing he did was seek out Sasuke but he wasn’t there.
“Sakura where is Sasuke, have you seen him today?” the blonde asked the pink haired konoichi who was getting in some quick target practice until their sensei arrived.
“I haven’t seen him today,” Sakura said as she flung a shuriken at the target and looked at her teammate out of the corner of her eyes, “Did something happen between you last night, is that why you’re so anxious to see him.”
Naruto paled visibly under Sakura’s gaze and he swallowed nervously. Had Sasuke told her something, was that why she was being so nosey?
Normally she didn’t concern herself in his business but he supposed Sasuke was involved so she, being his number one fan girl would be curious.
“I know he came to talk to you last night about why you’ve been acting so down lately and I know you probably don’t want to talk about it, especially not with me, but I just wanted you to know that I’m here if you ever need to vent,” She turned to him fully and smiled, “It can really help you know and I know that you’re really more of the suffer in silence type, but that’s just what you have to do sometimes, talk about your problems I mean,” Sakura sighed inside.
This really wasn’t sounding like she meant it to, like she had rehearsed in her head a hundred times in preparation for seeing him today. She wanted Naruto to know that she was here for him, that he had someone that he could talk to if he needed to. She knew how much the blonde loved her but she had realised a long time ago that she would only ever see him as a brother.
“Thankyou Sakura, t-that really does mean a lot coming from you,” Naruto raised his eyes from the ground and offered her a toothy grin, “it might sound strange but just knowing that your there for me really does make me feel a little better.”
“Hey guys,” said Kakashi as he appeared out of nowhere, “Where’s Sasuke?” he asked as he pulled out the ever present orange book.
“He’s late,” commented Sakura dryly, “just like you.”
Kakashi’s one visible eye curved to indicate a smile as he ignored the only female member of the team; he was used to her jibes about his lateness. His entire team was aware of the reason as to why he was constantly late, they were aware of his past. Kakashi knew that Sakura’s constant nagging about his lateness was her own little way of showing that she cared and that she didn’t blame him for anything that happened in his past, even if he did.
“Well since Sasuke isn’t here how about we take the day off from training, I’ve been working you guys pretty hard lately and I think you deserve a rest. It will do you all good.”
“No it’s alright I’m here.”
Naruto jumped in surprise at the sound of Sasuke’s voice right behind him. He had been so caught up in wondering where the raven was that he hadn’t sensed him come up behind him through the trees.
“Alright then since we’re all here let’s get started on today’s training,” announced the silver haired jonin as Naruto tried to compose himself. Kakashi didn’t wait for an apology from the late Uchiha, knowing all too well that he wouldn’t receive one, “today we are going on a treasure hunt!”
In unison three pairs of eyes widened in disbelief and Sakura couldn’t help her mouth from falling open in shock. Their sensei could be so childish sometimes, how the hell was a treasure hunt supposed to help them improve as ninjas or even as a team?
When she voiced this concern Kakashi’s eye simply formed a crescent and he began to explain how the exercise was going to work, “I’m sure you all know the importance successful information gathering has on the outcome of missions, after all that was the main focus of the written section of the first chunin exam you all attended. In that exam you learnt that not only do you have to gather information skilfully and stealthily but that you also have to make sure that the information that you gather is correct.”
“However I believe that you can’t learn these things through an exam. So we’re going to try it out in a real world environment. Why? Because it’s been two years since you participated in that exam and though we’ve taken on various missions in that time that involve information gathering in one way or another our skill in this area is not as good as it could be.”
“Real world?” asked Naruto placing his hands behind his head with a puzzled blank look gracing his features, “what the hell does that mean?”
“What it means is that I’ve set up various clues and hints, similar to those that you might come across during a mission, all around Konoha. Some will be right and some will be wrong so what you have to do is use your knowledge of the surrounding area and your own intelligence and instincts to make decisions on which clues are real and which are fake. You will be rewarded if you succeed but punished if you fail. Guys I’ve tried to make this as close to a mission as I can without having to throw shuriken and kunai at you while you look for and consider your clues.”
With the explanations done he handed them each a single slip of paper, “this is the first clue. You guys have until sunrise tomorrow,” he brought his book back up to his face and turned away from them, “On but before i go one more thing. Naruto you might want to zip your jacket up a bit higher, some people might be curious as to how you managed to get that strange bruise on your neck. Anyway I’ll be waiting for you all at the finish. Good luck,” and with a wave over his shoulder he was gone.
“what bruise?” enquired Sakura as she turned to Naruto and tried to get a look at his neck as he zipped his jacket all the way up to his chin. Sakura’s green eyes narrowed, “you should really let me take a look at it Naruto, I am the medical ninja on this team after all.”
Naruto simply pretended he didn’t hear her and focused on the clue he had been given, hoping she would take the hint and leave him alone.
“I don’t get it,” mumbled Naruto some seconds later as he stared at his piece of paper as if he could will it to make sense for him. He quickly gave up and shoved his piece of paper in Sakura’s face, “what does this mean.”
“Hey!” shouted Sakura backpedalling and almost falling over, “you’re not meant to show me your clue Naruto. We aren’t working together in this, that’s why he gave us separate clues.”
She smiled at his pout and ruffled his hair, “cheer up Naruto, I’m sure you’re more than capable of figuring this one out on your own,” and then she turned and headed off in the direction that her clue was leading her.
“Come one dobe lets go,” Sasuke demanded as he began to leave in the direction of his own clue.
“But we-we aren’t meant to be working together, Sakura said so,” the blonde cursed himself at how childish he sounded.
“She might have said so but just in case you weren’t paying attention Kakashi didn’t. Let Sakura work on her own if she wants to. Besides,” Sasuke turned and locked eyes with his blonde friend, “I think it will give us a good opportunity to talk about what happened this morning.”
Naruto paled visibly. He had been all for talking to Sasuke when training started but as soon as the Uchiha had arrived he felt his confidence and bravado shrinking until it was at the point where he almost wished that Sasuke would leave him to fend for himself with today’s confusing mission.
“Of course if you don’t want to talk that’s okay as well, “Sasuke mumbled when he saw panic settling in Naruto’s eyes, “Either way I think it’s best if we do this mission together, that way it gets done faster and you won’t be running around outside all night, you’re lucky you don’t have a cold already so I think it’s best if we don’t tempt fate.”
“S-Sasuke, you really care if I get a cold?” The blonde was touched by the Uchiha’s concern for his physical health; even if he was a little annoyed that Sasuke didn’t think he could manage this mission on his own.
The raven smirked, “would I have bothered saying what I just said if I didn’t. Come on we’re wasting time,” and then the Uchiha moved off in his own direction without bothering to consult Naruto’s clue, being fairly certain that all three clues were the same.
Naruto stood still a moment and considered his two options.
Option one: he could go with Sasuke and get this task over and done with quickly but he would eventually have to talk about the morning’s events with him which was something he had finally decided he did not want to do in the slightest.
Option Two: going off on his own and though he would be alone which ensured there would be no awkward conversations with his best friend there was the highly likely possibility of him getting a cold which meant he would have to deal with Grandma Tsunade and another one of her lectures about not taking care of himself.
Sighing the blonde decided that anything was better than dealing with the somewhat over protective busty Hokage and went after the Uchiha who was standing by the tree line waiting for him.
The two set off in silence, taking to the trees and setting a casual pace. Naruto let Sasuke lead because he had no idea where the raven was leading them and decided he didn’t care, choosing to trust in Sasuke’s abilities to lead them in the right direction.
The silence however soon turned from companionable to strained as Sasuke began losing his patience with the unusually quiet fox and Naruto began jumping at Sasuke’s every tense sigh and movement as if he were expecting the Uchiha to pounce and simply beat an conversation out of him.
“Naruto,” Sasuke ground out through his teeth, “I’m not going to force you to talk to me about it but we WILL talk about it,” It wasn’t a request or a question on the Uchiha’s part, it was a command.
“I know,” Naruto whispered and concentrate on where his feet were landing as if he were worried he’d fall from the trees, “Just not right now okay.”
“Alright,” the Uchiha gazed over his shoulder, “I want you to let Sakura look at your neck, from what I saw he bit you pretty hard,” and who knows where else his mouth has been, Sasuke added in his mind.
“No its alright I’ll be fine and I don’t really want Sakura to see, she’d figure out what it is just like Kakashi and then she’d never let up,” Sasuke watched as Naruto bit his lip nervously, he could tell there was some other reason as to why the blonde wasn’t really worried about the bite, “she’s like a damn bloodhound once she figures out something is going on,” he gave a small half-hearted chuckle and looked up from his footing to see Sasuke regarding him with calculating eyes, “What?”
Sasuke continued to stare at him and try as he might Naruto couldn’t read past that expressionless ask he wore so well. Why can’t my mask be like that, it’s too easy to see through these days.
The Uchiha stopped moving abruptly and Naruto ,who was too caught up in his mussing, had to jump onto the branch bellow his friend so he wouldn’t crash into him, “what is it Sasuke, are we where the clue told us to go?”
When the Uchiha jumped down to the same branch Naruto was taken aback by his expression. Sasuke was angry, no not angry, he was furious.
“What else?” Sasuke hissed out as his eyes flashed to red unconsciously as his anger and his chakra flared together, “where else?”
Naruto took a cautious step back and held up his hands in front of him, “Sasuke what’s wrong, what are you talking about?” The blonde swallowed audibly as the Uchiha’s scowl darkened, clearly that hadn’t been the right thing to say.
Before Naruto could react Sasuke’s hand shot out and grabbed the zipper of his jacket and yanked it halfway down before it got caught in the fabric.
“What the hell Sasuke?” Naruto yelled and tried to move away from the Uchiha who still had hold of the front of his jacket, “Damn it you jerk let –“ Naruto’s shout was cut off as Sasuke quickly wrestled him to the ground, pinning the blondes legs with his own.
Naruto struggled to get away but the infuriated raven haired shinobi only growled before drawing his sword and impaling it into the wood next to the squirming blondes head in one lightening swift practiced movement, “Stay still.”
Large blue eyes widened impossibly futher at his frinds serious tone and he stilled instantly. He may be thick sometimes but he knew how dangerous Sasuke could be , he knew just how fragile his temper could be at times and he had to tread carefully. One slight move in the wrong direction could make the situation so much worse.
“Are you going to tell me or am I going to have to find out for myself,” Sasuke could barely force the words around the rage that was bubbling in his chest and he fought the urge to scream at his friend to tell him the truth.
“J-just calm down Sasuke please, I don’t know what your-“
“Damn it dobe,” It almost came out as a sob and Sasuke hated it, he didn’t want to see but it was the only thing he could do to confirm his suspicions, to confirm his fears, “ don’t move,” he warned again for good measure.
Shaking Sasuke moved his hand off Naruto’s chest and sat up a little, straddling the blonde’s waste so he still couldn’t move freely. He kept a tight grip on the hilt of his sword, positive that it was the only thing keeping his anger in check.
He fiddled with his friend’s jacket zipper, struggling to get it free from the material it was snagged in with only one hand. He kept his eyes trained on Naruto’s face, not willing to look down at what he was possibly revealing and knew when Naruto realised what was happening.
Blue eyes closed in order to stop the tears from falling, he didn’t want Sasuke to see him, his tears or his body. The blonde choked back a sob and opened his eyes and watched himself break in the pristine reflection of Sasuke’s weapon. When the Uchiha stilled above him he realised that his jacket had been completely unzipped and his mess shirt pushed up. The fox bit his lip hard to keep from weeping.
Little did he know was that Sasuke was facing the same predicament as his sorrow quickly over took and drowned his anger. Standing proud and stark against the tanned flesh of Naruto’s upper body where the marks and proof of Kiba’s “love”.
Bruises of various shapes littered his skin in many colours as they went through their various stages of healing. Scratches like claw marks crisscrossed against the tight muscles of the blondes stomach and Sasuke could make out bruises that could only have been hands against the blondes hips.
The bruising and scratches continued and dipped below the blonde’s pants and Sasuke could only guess as to how far down they went. His best friend looked more like someone’s punching bag than someone’s lover. How could Naruto let Kiba do this to him, he had to know that his was not love and that it was border lining on something far more dangerous than that.
A sickening thought flashed through Sasuke’s mind and he shifted to the concealing fabric surrounding one of the blonde’s wrists and steeled himself before rolling it up.
Yes just as he had suspected they were there, rings of abused flesh from being bound and like the bruises some were old and others were disturbingly new.
“This is why,” Sasuke had to pause and swallow the bile that was forcing its way up is throat, “ dobe this is why you haven’t some to the bathhouse with me after training when i ask,” Sasuke closed his eyes and touched one of the bruises gently, cursing Kiba with every name he knew and in every language he could think of. It looks like he’s just come back from a terrible mission, Sasuke wailed in his mind.
Sasuke opened his eyes and focused on Naruto’s face, he didn’t want to look at his friends battered body anymore, he couldn’t. Keeping his eyes locked on the tears trailing silently down his friend blank face the Uchiha zipped up the blonde’s jacket again before pulling his sword out of the wood and sheathing it.
“Take me home,” Naruto’s whispered plea seemed to shatter the silence around them, “Please Sasuke, I wanna go home.”
Sasuke nodded and helped his mentally broken friend sit up> he seemed so close to the edge of breaking completely, Sasuke was frightened, something he rarely felt, “I’m going to take you home with me ok dobe, I’m not going to let you be alone right now.”
Naruto didn’t argue and he didn’t protest when Sasuke placed him on his back. All he did was wrap his arms and legs around the raven tightly as if he were a lifeline and hide his face in the cloth of Sasuke’s shirt.
Sasuke reached up and ran a hand gently through Naruto’s locks as he felt him sobbing silently before taking off through the trees in the direction of his home completely unaware that they were being watched by a curious masked jonin.
