He stared at her for a full minute, his mouth hanging open. When he remembered himself, his mouth snapped closed. She studied the menu for another minute in the silence, then looked up at him.
His brain was on the fritz. The images that came to mind when he saw the size of the bag from the lingerie shop short circuited everything. He tried to sit up in the chair without being obvious. He had to get into a better sitting position.
Thoughts of lace and satin insisted on swirling around his head and he took a moment to ponder them. Finally, he shook his head and looked at her. He hadn't meant for her to really buy lingerie. He hadn't expected her to show up with a big bag full of it. He'd only thought to maybe make her a little mad and tease her a bit.
The joke was on him. He picked up a menu and considered the options. He wouldn't be getting up for a while.
The server approached the table, a pretty young woman in jeans and a t-shirt with the name of the tea house on it. "May I get you something to drink?"
Kakashi smiled up at her. "Tea, please." The waitress stood motionless, not blinking as she looked at him.
Sakura glanced between Kakashi and the stunned waitress. Kakashi caught the look and tried not to smirk. "And my wife would like the same."
The waitress seemed to straighten and only then did she notice Sakura. "Oh! I'm so sorry. Do you also know what you'd like to eat?"
Sakura blinked at her once before saying, "I'll have the sushi, please. Nori." She set the menu down and glared at Kakashi.
"I'll have the same as my wife." He said with emphasis on the last word, before putting his menu aside.
The waitress got the hint, jotted something on her notepad and, noticing the scowl on Sakura's face, escaped into the teahouse.
He smiled over at Sakura. "Problem...dear?"
She didn't say anything, simply turned in her chair to watch the street traffic. He could have sworn he heard her mutter something about "being illegal." He hid his grin behind his book, then, casually said, "so, did you just shop or did you find something out?"
He was greeted with silence another moment before she sighed. "Did you have to turn that damned million-watt smile on her? And good grief, do you have to take so much pleasure out of the staring?"
Kakashi realized what was going on here. She was jealous. Ridiculous. Insane. This was Sakura, his student! How could she possibly be jealous? He shook himself mentally before smiling at her. "Really, Sakura, I did no such thing."
She snorted in response before turning back to the street. He waited, knowing she'd answer him. She sighed, "Fushinji Import & Export." She turned back to him and he saw her shift from woman to shinobi. "They have an office on Front Street. I don't know if this is the same people, but the timing is too coincidental."
She paused as the waitress brought out their tea and set it out. Sakura, realizing she'd been ridiculous with the waitress smiled warmly at her. "Thank you."
She was taken aback for a second, but recovered nicely. "You're quite welcome. Can I get you anything else?"
Sakura glanced at the condiments on the table. "Do you have any honey?"
The waitress nodded. "Sure, I'll be right back." Despite her recovery, she seemed to move back into the building quickly. They sat in silence until the waitress came back with the honey, then disappeared back into the teahouse.
Sakura turned back to the table and began stirring her tea. "The proprietress of the shop mentioned that they had just started operating here a few weeks ago. Isn't that when they heard the first rumors?"
Kakashi said, "Yes. There are a few different ones that Tsunade got wind of. Some of it is small stuff that we're not going to worry about. But the worst, by far, is the 'export' part of the business that we suspect. "
"Oh?" Sakura took a sip of her tea. "What about it?"
"I don't know yet. But what does Wave, specifically, have to export?" Kakashi sipped his tea, but they were interrupted, once again, by the waitress as she brought out their food.
"Can I get you anything else?" This was directed at Kakashi again. He turned an inquisitive look at Sakura.
"I'm fine, thanks." She said and busied herself with her food.
"We're good, thank you." He said, and turned to his own plate. He spent a minute putting it together, waiting for the waitress to get out of earshot before continuing. "As I was saying, there are no exports here that would be of interest to the mainland. So, why? Why would they set up here? Import, sure, but export?"
Sakura chewed thoughtfully. "Nothing I can come up with is a good option."
"Got it in one." Kakashi pointed at her with a chopstick. "I think we should consider heading over to the open market yet before we go back to the inn."
Sakura didn't want to think about going back yet. They would have to be in the same room most of the evening, pretending to have a wedding night. The tension was liable to drive her insane. "What do they have at the market?"
"Typical things like produce, fish, that sort of thing. But I believe there are other merchants who set up there, too. Either way, it's possible to overhear plenty." He took another bite of his food.
Sakura forced herself to concentrate on her meal, rather than his face. She was surprised, when she looked down, by how much she'd eaten. She sipped some tea, then finished the last of her sushi.
"Well, then, okay." She looked out over the street and so was surprised when she felt him take her hand. She turned back to him quickly.
"We should really act a bit more like we're newly married." He said with a smirk. He leaned on one hand and pretended to look dreamily at her.
Sakura fought the urge to roll her eyes, but decided to play along. She twisted her wrist so she could hold his hand better and leaned on her own fist. She was trying to think of something witty to say when she was interrupted by the feel of his thumb rubbing over her wrist.
It took all of her willpower to keep from closing her eyes. She felt a sizzle of electricity go up her arm and straight to her core. She would not react. She wouldn't, but she wanted to. She kept her calm through sheer force of will. She was saved, oddly enough, by the waitress.
As she approached the table, she took out her order book and set the check onto the table. Then she gathered the dishes and stacked them on the tray. "I'll be back in a few for that."
Sakura started to reach into her bag to pay for her portion of it. He raised an eyebrow. "How many married couples do you know that spilt the bill?"
She glared at him, but let it go. He was right. "We'll talk about this later."
He chuckled quietly before putting some ryo in the folder with the check. When the waitress came back, he handed it to her and stood. "Shall we go, dear?"
She wanted to growl. This was a bit ridiculous, but she was good and stood up, grabbing her bag. That was when she noticed his bags on the ground next to him. He picked them up, took her bag from her and added it to his pile, then took her hand and began walking.

The market was only a few blocks away. She tried to pull her hand out of his when they were away from the restaurant, but he refused to let go. She wondered for the thousandth time why he insisted on putting on this much of a show. It was driving her crazy. She wanted to enjoy the feeling of holding his hand or kissing him. But it was for show and she knew he didn't feel the same as she did.
So, instead, she wished she could stop feeling the things she did. She didn't want to feel his rough palms against hers. Because it didn't stop with what they'd feel like against her hand. She didn't want to know what it was to kiss him in a pretend way. Because she couldn't keep from thinking about those lips doing other things to her.
She sighed and tried desperately to push the thoughts aside. She was here on a mission and so far, she wasn't behaving like she was on one. She wondered if undercover was really for her, but rejected the thought as soon as she had it.
It wasn't being undercover that was the problem. It was the cover she had with the partner she had. Pretending to be married to Kakashi was harder than she'd thought it would be.
"Is something wrong, Sakura?" Kakashi asked quietly.
"Yes," she answered before she caught herself. "Um, no. No, I'm just a little tired. It's been a busy day."
It was a lie. Kakashi knew it. But he had no idea what caused it and didn't think it was a good time to push. "The market is just another block over. We'll look around a little bit, then head back and you can rest a bit. We'll want to show for dinner, but then we can spend the rest of the night in the room."
Sakura nodded, but didn't look overly happy about it. He let go of the thoughts and turned to the market as they approached. As he'd suggested, there were fruit and vegetable stands. He saw rice and fish and fishing supplies. Further down, he saw the other merchants - those that had come in on the ships. There were leather goods, metal goods, even clothing.
It was to these that they went. The smells of the fresh fish and the ocean filled the air. The temperature here was lower, thanks to the water. Sakura pulled her hand out of his and approached the leather goods merchant. He leaned in and kissed her temple and felt her shudder. He wondered about that, but decided to let it go for now. "I'll be over here," he said and motioned to the metal goods. She nodded and went on to examine a bag of some sort.
When he'd moved over to the other booth, Sakura breathed a small sigh of relief. She looked over the small purse, checking its pockets and the length of its strap. It could hang cross-ways over her and there was enough room for her money pouch, a few kunai, several shuriken in an outer pocket and even space for a small medical kit.
She turned to the merchant. "How much?"
He named a ridiculous price and she shook her head. "I don't think so."
She went to lay it back down and the merchant said, "wait." He seemed to consider it, "8,000 ryo."
Sakura looked at the bag. It was easily worth that, but she knew this was a game as much as a sale. "7,000"
This time he shook his head. "7,500"
Sakura smiled. "Okay." She realized she didn't have her bag from the store or her pouch. "Wait one moment." She said to the merchant. She hurried over to Kakashi, and touched his arm. When he turned his attention from the blade he'd been looking at and saw her, he smiled. She fought the urge to close her eyes and whispered, "I need my money."
He reached into his pocket. "How much, sweetheart?" He said, loud enough for the blade seller to hear.
She was silent a moment. She sent a pointed look at her shopping bag -- the one he was still holding. "Oh, it's not much, could you hand me my shopping bag, dear?" She smiled sweetly up at him.
"It's okay, honey. I'll get it." He said and pulled out his money.
Sakura wanted to sigh, growl, do something. But an idea came to her instead. She grinned. "100,000 ryo, dear." She chuckled quietly to herself as his eye widened.
He stared at her a moment, then surprised her by pulling the bills out and handing it to her. She didn't stomp away, but it was a near thing. She returned to the bag merchant and paid him, putting the rest of the money into the inner-most pocket and closing it. "Thank you very much." She smiled up at him. "You have some wonderful items here."
He smiled back at her, his teeth crooked and smelling every bit of the sea. "Thank you, m'dear. It's not as easy to sell here as it used to. New..." he paused. "Merchants have moved in, making it more difficult."
"I see," Sakura said, "that must make things very difficult." She looked over his table again, and saw a couple of really good ninja pouches, but she didn't dare buy it. She couldn't risk it. "Thank you again. I wish you the best." And with that, she re-joined Kakashi.
"Good luck to you." Kakashi said in farewell, then turned to Sakura. "Shall we, my dear?" He took her hand and they moved along the booths once more. The clothing merchant caught her eye, so she let go and went over to take a look.
She didn't know what had gotten into her. She hated shopping, but here she was, looking at dresses again. She found a little black one and took it down. She placed the hanger over her head and pulled it out so that she could see if it would fit. It was a bit tighter than she would like, but then she remembered the corset and before she could second guess herself, threw it over her arm to buy.
A few minutes later, she rejoined Kakashi once more, this time with another large shopping bag. He raised his eyebrow at her, but she just smiled. "Are you ready to go back, sweetheart?"
He stared at her a minute, not quite sure how to take the endearment. Then he mentally shrugged and offered her his arm. She wrapped her hands around it and they started back toward the inn.
This day was too surreal for words. He had no idea how to take it all. The wake up at the campsite this morning, the "wedding" ceremony, the large bag of lingerie. Kakashi was sure he'd be a candidate for the padded wing at Konoha Hospital when this was all over.
