When Hinata woke up the next morning, she became aware of three things simultaneously. One, she was no longer on the wooden floor. At some point during the night, Neji must have moved over to make room for her on the mat. Two, she was almost crushed up against Neji’s body, with his arm around her, holding her there. And three, she didn’t want to move.
She lay there, savoring the feeling for a few minutes. She wondered when she started wanting this – wanting to be near Neji like this. As the cobwebs started to clear from her mind, however, she realized now was not the time for her to try to think through that. She heard quiet noises as the others began to stir.
As she lay there, trying to figure out how to get Neji to let go of her, she became aware of something else. Apparently, Neji didn’t seem to mind where she was laying, either. She wasn’t exactly world-wise, but she knew enough about male anatomy to recognize that. She blushed.
“If you continue to blush like that, it’s going to be even more obvious.” Neji whispered wickedly in her ear. “And good grief, don’t move.” His voice sounded strained. Hinata didn’t know what to make of it.
She tried to lie as still as she could, but she was having a lot of trouble breathing. It didn’t help that Neji’s hand was very close to her breast. She tried desperately to calm her breathing and finally, Neji moved his arm.
Her breathing evened out and she had an odd moment of loss. She was going to have to analyze her feelings when this was all over. This obviously wasn’t what she was used to feeling for Neji. So, what was it? She mentally shook herself and rolled away from Neji to stand up.
He gave her a mildly disgruntled look before sitting up. “You shouldn’t move, Neji.” She said, quietly.
“I’m fine. Well, relatively speaking. I’ll be okay to travel.” Neji closed his eyes and leaned his head back against the wall.
“Good.” Genma stood up from his place by the door. “It looks like whoever attacked you yesterday has decided not to come back. We’ll head back to the village this morning and get further orders from Tsunade-sama. Ino, would you check Neji over?”
“Hai.” Ino stretched her back and moved over to examine Neji.
Hinata looked around and noticed Lee and Tenten sitting up, both with embarrassed looks on their faces. She wondered about that, but was distracted by the drawing Sai had made of the bird-like creature that was still resting on the table. After a few minutes, however, nothing new came to her, so she set it back down.
She went over to the little sink and turned the water on to wash her face. Too many thoughts tried to tumble around in her head, so she tried her best to block out everything except what would be needed to get them back home.
A few minutes later, they headed out of the village and made their way south toward home. “Neji…” Hinata began quietly. She didn’t want the rest of the group privy to their conversation.
“Yes, Hinata-sama?” They were walking in deference to Neji who was better, but not in good enough condition travel the normal ninja way.
“How...?” She swallowed and blushed again, which managed to only make her mad. Neji was the only person who could still make her blush and stutter so badly, damn him. “How did I end up on the mat this morning?”
He looked up at her in surprise. “I pulled you over, Hinata. Yes, I had injuries, but I still didn’t feel right taking the mat to myself. Not when there was plenty of room for you, too.”
Hinata could have argued the word “plenty.” That was more than a bit of an over-exaggeration, in her opinion. But she let it drop. She decided she needed to concentrate better on their surroundings. Just because they weren’t attacked in the night, doesn’t mean they were safe.
Sure enough, another mile or two down the road, they were showered with kunai. “Damn!” was all Genma said before they surrounded Neji and drew their weapons.
Hinata crouched in front of Neji, but he tried to push her aside. “Dammit, you’re in no condition to fight. Let me protect you for once.” Neji paused in surprise.
Hinata turned to face the woman in front of her. “Tenten!” She called.
Tenten looked over her shoulder, “that’s her.”
Hinata looked her over, then concentrated her chakra. “Byakugan!” She dropped into the first stance of Gentle Fist and moved forward.
Neji watched in amazement as Hinata fought. He knew she was good. But Hinata wasted no movement, as she went from one stance to the next.
“Two palms!” Hinata spun and made contact with the first of the chakra points. The woman tried to dodge, but Hinata was relentless. “Four palms! Eight palms!” Her hands were flying and Neji almost felt sorry for the woman who was so outmatched. “Sixteen palms! Thirty-two palms…SIXTY-FOUR PALMS!!!” And the woman slumped to the ground.
Within a minute, it was over. Hinata turned to help the others, but they, too, had already finished off their opponents. Three bodies lay in the path, the fourth apparently decided it wanted to live and had taken off.
Genma dropped to his knee, and pulled out a scroll. Quickly forming the seal, he stored the bodies away and they were off again.
They made it to Konoha shortly after lunch. Hinata took Neji over to the hospital building, despite his arguments that he was fine. “Then you won’t have to stay long, will you?” She smiled when he knew he’d lost.
She waited for him, while they checked him over. He emerged from the examining room a short time later. “See?” He said, smugly. “I’m fine.”
“Well, it didn’t take that long, did it? Let’s go home. Tsunade-sama wants to see us all in her office in an hour.”
Most of the temporary buildings that had been constructed after the attack from Pein were on the western edge of the crater. As they walked from the hospital to the Hyuuga compound, Hinata smiled. Despite it all, the children played, the parents scolded and there was still laughter.
She paused a moment at the top of a hill above the temporary village. “Hinata?” Neji touched her shoulder.
“They can’t kill it. They can try – no matter who it is. They can level our buildings; cause a crater in the land. They can even take our loved ones from us, but we’ll come back from it.” She smiled.
“The Will of Fire.” Hinata could hear the smile in Neji’s voice. “No one understands it, but us. We are a family – the entire village. We love, we protect…that’s who we are.” He glanced over his shoulder at the Stone Mountain. “That is what they knew. The First when he founded the village. The Second carried it on, but it was the Third that, even with everything he went through, instilled it so thoroughly in us. He was the one who really began to teach us what it means to be family. The Fourth gave his life to protect us. And now, Tsunade-sama knows what it is to rebuild, when we’re torn down. ”
“It’ll be interesting to see how Naruto handles it. “ She giggled at the sour look that passed over Neji’s face briefly. “You think he won’t be Hokage?”
“No, it’s not that... Never mind. We need to get back to the Hokage’s office soon for new orders.”
