Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto or any of the characters but boy do I wish I did! I do not make money from this. |
A/N: Hey everyone! Sorry it’s taken me so long to update.
I’ve been at work, working extra hours too! *sigh* I’m so tired and I haven’t
even finished yet. I’ve got to go to work tomorrow argh!
Anyway, I’m afraid I can’t give a response to everyone who’s
reviewed because, on top of everything else, my computer died and I mean
properly died! I’ve had to ask a mate if I could go round his house to use his
computer. Cheeky I know! Anyway, since I can’t give you guys a shout out for
reviewing I promise to do so when my computer gets fixed.
Anyway, I hope this chapter
makes up for it. Here we go.
Tsunade simply stared at the young chuunin in
front of her. Although she had known what he was about to ask, the fact that he
had actually said it still shocked her. Her records room was off limits to
everyone apart from herself and Shizune and she knew that Shikamaru knew that
too. Even Naruto knew that!
Naruto himself was about to enlighten his friend of that
fact but one gesture from the wise teen halted him before he had even really
begun. Instead, he simply watched as their Hokage and the brightest shinobi in
years stared at each other. Eventually, Tsunade sighed wearily.
“Shikamaru, you know I can’t do that. It’s off limits to
everyone unless I give them my permission but besides that-”
“But then! Baa-chan, you can give us your permission,
can’t you?” the blond interrupted. He watched as a vein twitched in her temple
as she tried to control the urge to shout at him that she hadn’t finished
speaking when Shikamaru calmed the situation by explaining.
“She can’t give us permission, Naruto. She can’t allow
anyone below the rank of Jounin in there.” Naruto’s face fell as he realised
that neither of them applied to this condition. Tsunade chuckled lightly at his
disgruntled face.
“No, I can’t give a Genin or a Chuunin permission but if
you were to find out that I keep the keys in the top drawer of my desk on the
left-hand side , I’m sure you’d make nothing of it.” Her smile widened as she
stood and proceeded to the door. She stopped with her hand upon the handle and
without looking at them, she continued, “Just as I’m sure you won’t take
advantage of my absence while I go get a coffee. Will you boys?” She gave them
a mock stern look before smirking and closing the door behind her.
As soon as she left the room, Naruto gave an aggravated
sigh.
“Amou! How are we supposed to help Sasuke now?!” He
clasped his head in his hands as he stamped his feet in frustration, completely
disregarding Shikamaru who was moving towards the desk. When he heard the
brunette rooting around, his head came up sharply. He watched in disbelief as
the lazy shinobi tossed things around in his hasty search before murmuring a
slight ‘Aha’ as he found the elusive object. Turning to the blond with a wide
grin, he held up a set of keys attached to a pig keyring with a flourish.
“Now lets get down to business.” he declared. Naruto
gaped stupidly before finding his voice and smirking back.
“Shikamaru, you heard what Baa-chan said. No one below Jounin
rank is allowed in that room and I can’t believe that you’re gonna steal the
keys tebayo.” Shikamaru stopped and turned to him with wide eyes before letting
out a heartfelt sigh.
“Naruto. Are you really as dumb as you look?” Said blond
went bright red with suppressed anger at the insult but quietened when Shikamaru
continued. “She can’t let us have the keys as in she can’t knowingly give them
to us without repercussions. The fact that she told us where they were and then
“went to get a coffee”” he said, fingers tracing speech marks in the air,
“means she wants us to take them. Mataku, it’s kinda obvious Naruto. How often
does Tsunade-sama get her own coffee?”
Watching the blond’s face was like watching the sun rise as
comprehension dawned and his sunny smile slid firmly into place. He pumped his
fist into the air as he shouted,
“Way to go Baa-chan!! Yosh, we’re gonna go find something
to save the teme.” With that, he was gone in a yellow flash, leaving the
brunette behind, who promptly sighed yet again. ‘Really,’ he thought, ‘you’d
think the baka would remember that I’ve got the keys.’ And, dragging his feet,
he left the room to follow his energetic friend.
The room was dark, lit only by the old light
fixtures placed erratically around the circular space. They shed hardly enough
light to see by and that was probably a blessing. Dust swirled around, seeming
to form figures before melting away into nothing. Shikamaru pondered on the
fact that, although his mind and other senses told him that the room was
defiantly empty, his eyes refused to acknowledge it. He turned to Naruto to see
if the blond was having similar problems and chuckled, amused as he watched the
blond rubbing his eyes and blinking owlishly.
“Shikamaru, is it just me or does it look like there’s
people standing just in the corner of your vision?” the blond whispered, still
rubbing his eyes as if he would then see clearly.
The brunette nodded his head slowly before whispering back,
“It’s the dust. It’s playing tricks on our eyes.” They
both became aware that they were whispering, struck by the silence and
stillness of the room before them. They almost felt that, if they were to be
any louder, something within that secret place would change. ‘Given how
forbidden jutsus and powerful knowledge are hidden within his walls, it
probably could change.’ the young genius thought. Cautiously, he took a step
towards the middle of the circular space, dust rising with every step, and
looked around.
In the circular room, bookshelves and filing cabinets lined
the outer wall with another semi-circle of bookshelves within it. As the lazy nin
approached the middle, he counted five rows of them, getting steadily smaller
and tighter the closer he got to the centre. Directly in the centre stood a
worn, oval-shaped, oak table piled high with the most recent mission reports,
manuscripts and other miscellaneous scrolls that had yet to be filed away. Shikamaru
took a deep breath, which he immediately regretted as the dust clogged in his
throat, before making his way back to the door.
Meanwhile, Naruto had not moved from his place. Unsure of
what exactly it was that he was supposed to be looking for, indecision had made
him remain as he was but the oppressive silence of the darkened room had stayed
him. Like Shikamaru, he knew that the ghostly apparitions he kept glimpsing was
just the dusk as it caught the faint light in strange ways. His senses being
more acute than the chuunin’s due to the Kyuubi, he had known even before
entering the room that it was empty, but they also told him more about what was
in there. His nose, while not as sensitive as Kiba or Akamaru’s, was filled
with the musky scent of old scrolls and dusty carpets as his eyes saw figures
of dust. The real difference between Shikamaru and himself was that Naruto
could feel the ancient power in the air, crawling across his skin, making the
hairs on his body stand up. He could hear a low hum coming from the shelves as
if the scrolls held a charge waiting to be released.
IT’S IN HERE, I KNOW IT IS. THE KNOWLEGDE I
NEED TO BE FREE, TO RELEASE THIS DETESTABLE-
“Naruto!”
The blond jumped slightly when he felt Shikamaru shaking him
by the arms. He looked dazedly at his friend who had a panic-ridden look on his
face.
“Shikamaru, I…what happened?” he asked, voice husky. He
coughed to clear his throat as the chuunin released his hold on his arms,
sighing in relief.
“I’m not sure. I was making my way back here when I heard
you start laughing, only it wasn’t you. I ran back and your eyes were red like
when the Kyuubi starts to take over.” He shrugged helplessly as he failed to
say more. He thought back to when he had heard the chilling laughter begin.
He’d been looking around the shelves as he wandered along, wondering why to
begin their search, when a chill had snaked down his spine and the sinister
chuckling had filled the otherwise silent room. At once, he knew that the
laughter belonged to the demon and had raced back to find his friend, standing
rigidly still, eyes burning with maniacal glee as the vile sound poured from
his fanged mouth.
Naruto’s brow creased as he tried to make sense of what Shikamaru
had said. Distantly, he heard again the words that the Kyuubi had spoken and
his eyes opened wide in dread.
“Shikamaru, I think there’s something here that the Kyuubi
wants. Maybe something that will undo the seal,” he gazed around
apprehensively, as if whatever it was would jump out and attack him, “I don’t
know if I should be here. What if I accidentally find it? Or worse, what if Kyuubi
takes over and finds it?” He started to back away towards the door but Shikamaru’s
hand on his arm stopped him.
“Naruto, calm down. You’re probably right about there
being something in here that could do that but you’re not going to find it ‘cos
we’re not looking for forbidden jutsus or anything like that. We’re looking for
the old laws or records of minutes of past court cases.” the lazy teen watched
as the blond took a calming breath, “and as for the Kyuubi taking over,” the
blond stiffened again, “you’ll have to keep him under tight control because I
need your help. This place is too big and we don’t have enough time for only
one person to look. Keep him under control, Naruto. Remember, you have to save Sasuke.”
Those words had an almost magical effect; the blue eyes hardened in
determination, the fear they had held washed away as fire filled them, making
the chuunin smile.
“You’re right, Shika. We’ve got to save Sasuke! I won’t
let that stupid fox stop me.” He clenched his fists as he vowed it to himself,
ignoring the fox growling in anger. “So, where do we start?” he asked with a
feral grin. His friend smiled devilishly back before pointing across the
dimly-lit room.
“I think the section we need is over there. Naruto, use
your Kage Bunshin. It’ll go even quicker with more of us but don’t make so many
that your control over the Kyuubi weakens, ne?” As he began to walk away, he
heard the blond give the familiar cry, “Tajuu Kage Bunshin No Jutsu!” as more Naruto’s
popped into being with barely-hushed battle cries.
Sasuke stared out of the window, lost in his
thoughts. He hadn’t seen Naruto since the morning before and he was desperate
to see him again. It seemed to him that the image of the blond within his mind
was already dimming, fading away until all he was left with his fears. They
plagued him, pushing him into a corner until all he wanted to do was scream and
cry. None of this showed on his face; outwardly he was just as indifferent as
always but his heart cried out. It cried out for his blond angel to once again
save him from the darkness, to pull him back from the abyss and fill his world
with warmth and light.
The ticking of the clock was unnaturally loud to his ears
and, turning his head, he glanced at it as it counted down the hours, minutes,
seconds that he had to live. Time had always seemed to be constant; it was
always there whether you didn’t have enough or if you had so much that it
dragged. The sadistic law of the world meant that, now he had so little time
left, time itself sped up until he was racing along, all the while trying to
pull back and look behind.
Heaving a barely audible sigh, he turned away from the
incessant ticking to gaze once more out of his window. He watched as people
scurried around the busy streets, not a care in the world as they lived their
lives. ‘How much time are they wasting?’ the young Uchiha found himself
thinking, ‘When the time comes for them to die will they regret those wasted
seconds as I do?’ So many wasted seconds. Precious seconds that he threw away
training with Orochimaru. Carelessly abused as he tracked down his brother. All
those unaccountable seconds that he could have spent with Naruto if he hadn’t
been so utterly stupid.
Sasuke snorted in a very unUchiha-like way. ‘Hindsight is
such a bitch.’ Shaking his head in sarcastic amusement, his gaze fell to his
hands which were shaking slightly but no one but he could tell. He brought them
up to cover his eyes as thoughts of one person ran through his mind.
“Naruto…”
“Kuso!! I can’t find anything, anything at all!
Has anyone found anything?” A chorus of ‘Iie’s sounded from the other ten Naruto’s
and a heartfelt sigh from Shiakmaru. The chuunin scratched his head as he read
the paper before him.
“Well you found these old court minutes and we’ve found
out some useful info from them but they aren’t enough. They’ll help as far as
dragging out the trial but that’s about it.” He lowered the age faded notes as
he rubbed his temples, willing away the headache brought on by reading so much
in the dim lighting.
Naruto was becoming frantic. He didn’t know how long they
had spent in that musky room but he knew that they didn’t have much time left.
Unless they found something soon, Sasuke would die and the blond couldn’t
contemplate a life without him. Without Sasuke, Naruto felt that he would be
better off dead.
“No! Sasuke can’t die, he can’t!” he muttered to himself,
unaware of the Kyuubi’s chakra spiking until Shikamaru’s angry voice roused
him.
“Naruto! Control yourself! If you don’t, the Kyuubi will
overpower you. If you want to save Uchiha, then control your emotions, stop
panicking and search with everything you have!” The chuunin’s words awoke the
fighting spirit within the blond and, after ten identical grins were flashed, they
began searching with renewed vigour. ‘Which is just as well,’ the lazy nin
thought, ‘because he’s on his own. Time’s run out.’
“Naruto,” he called to get the young kitsune’s attention,
“I have to go. The trial’s about to begin.” The look of panic almost returned
to the blue eyes that were fighting off the blood-red that threatened. However,
a glint of determination surfaced from their depths and hardened the usually
open gaze to that of a warrior.
“Aa,” when he spoke his words were clipped, self-controlled,
“you go. Find a way to stall as long as you can. I’ll keep looking.” The blond
turned his back on his friend as he continued to sift through the forgotten
records, “I will find something in time. I have to!”
The young genius nodded, though Naruto did not see, and
wished him luck before making his way out.
‘You’d better find something, Naruto. For your own sake as
well as Sasuke’s.’
“We’ll begin now. We, the council, act as the
prosecutors against Uchiha Sasuke, missing nin of Konoha. Defendant for the
accused is Nara Shikamaru. First, we will hear the evidence against him.”
‘Here we go.’ thought Shikamaru.
“Fuck! Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, FUCK!!” Naruto
opened drawer after drawer, feverishly pulling out aged documents only to shove
them back in when they weren’t what he needed. The other ten Naruto’s were in
similar states of agitation. The real Naruto took a calming breath after
venting his frustration by kicking a cabinet a few times. He closed his eyes
and tried to centre himself.
HM HM HM. YOU’RE NOT GOING TO FIND ANYTHING YOU KNOW,
AND IN THE END, TH UCHIHA WILL DIE. THEY’LL KILL HIM AND YOU’LL BE LEFT ALONE
ONCE AGAIN. HA HA! HE’LL LEAVE YOU BEHIND YET AGAIN!
‘Shut up Kyuubi!!”
OH! I SEE I TOUCHED A NERVE. WELL, IT’S TRUE ISN’T IT?
HE ALWAYS LEAVES YOU BEHIND! NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU LOVE HIM, NO MATTER HOW
MUCH YOU DO FOR HIM, HE’LL NEVER FEEL THE SAME WAY!
“I said shut up! It doesn’t matter if he doesn’t feel
that way about me! Just having him alive, and my friend, is enough!”
AH BUT IS IT REALLY? I’VE SEEN YOUR THOUGHTS, YOUR
DREAMS. YOU CAN’T HIDE ANYTHING FROM ME. I SEE IT ALL AND I KNOW WHAT YOU WANT
AND IT IS DEFIANTLY NOT UCHIHA AS JUST A FRIEND.
“I didn’t say I don’t want more. I may want it but I
don’t need it. I’ll stay by his side forever even if it’s only as his friend.”
AND WHAT IF HE WAS TO GET MARRIED? AFTER EVERYTHING
YOU’VE DONE FOR HIM AND AFTER SAVING HIS LIFE, IMAGINE IF HE WENT AND MARRIED
SAKURA?
Hurt and anger blossomed within his heart and, for a moment,
his eyes flashed red in his indecision. The Naruto-bunshins looked up in
trepidation, uneasy with the temporary spike of sinister chakra that had enamanated
from the original but the blond controlled himself quickly.
‘Shut it fuzzball! You’re just trying to confuse and
upset me so that you can take over and I won’t let it happen!’
HMM SO MAYBE THAT WAS MY INTENTION. BUT EVEN IF IT
FAILED, TIME HAS PASSED WHILE YOU WERE BUSY ARGUING WITH ME. I WONDER IF
UCHIHA’S DEAD YET?
All of the Naruto’s gasped, pain pulling at their hearts
as this thought sounded in all of their heads. Panic and turmoil flashed
through each one before they started to disappear, each popping away into
nothing as an evil chakra started to swell.
“That is of no consequence. The deeds that he
has done while away from Konoha make no difference to the fact that he left. In
doing so, he became a missing nin. That he later killed Orochimaru doesn’t
change that he left to join him in the first place.” The elder’s sour voice
carried across the courtroom to where the others of the Rookie Nine and Neji’s
team sat. Each listened with heavy hearts to what was being said.
“Uchiha-san…” Lee quietly intoned.
“There’s not much left that Shikamaru can do,” Neji
pointed out, “he’s listed everything Uchiha has done that has helped Konoha but
they refuse to listen. Even the evidence he presented of past prosecutions of
missing nin’s hasn’t helped.” He frowned as his milky white eyes settled on the
Hyuuga representative on the council and said eyes narrowed as they took in the
barely disguised glee that shone from the man’s face. Neji knew that the
detestable man was enjoying the trial that would, at this rate, inevitably end
in an execution. Never had his distaste for the elders of the Hyuuga main
branch been higher.
Sakura watched, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, as Shikamaru
argued Sasuke’s case. Her eyes tilted in direction until they were focused on
her childhood crush.
She had spent a lot of time with Sasuke in the last few
days; trying to get him to eat as he stared out of the window or at the clock
upon the wall. He had barely opened his mouth the entire time and when he had,
it wasn’t to eat the food she was offering, it was only to talk about Naruto.
Where was he? When could he see him? Had she seen him? Had she talked to him?
It had made her realise the depth of Sasuke’s feelings for Naruto went beyond what
she had previously thought. The blond was the only one on the Uchiha’s mind as
he contemplated his final moments upon this earth and she now knew that she
would never be able to compete with Naruto where Sasuke’s feelings were
concerned. The dark-haired boy obviously loved the young kitsune the way that
she had always hoped he would love her but, far from feeling angry or betrayed,
she felt that it was meant to be. Both boys had suffered through so much in
their lives and she loved them both, so wanted them to be happy. If by some
miracle Sauke’s life was spared, then it was her wish that her two precious boys
to find love and joy within each other.
“Nara, stop repeating yourself. The incidences in the
past hold no relevance now. The Uchiha’s case is what we are concerned with…”
From the gallery, the young Konoha nin looked on with
unease. They all knew how much Sasuke meant to Naruto and regardless of their
own thoughts and feelings about the Uchiha, they all hoped and prayed for a
positive outcome, if only to spare their precious friend from the pain of
losing his most precious person.
The gavel was hit as the court was called to order; the decision
had been made. They drew in a collective breath and held it as one as the
sentence was passed.
“Uchiha Sasuke, missing nin of Konoha, your case has been
reviewed by this council and we have reached our decision. The punishment for
the crimes you have committed and abandoning the village of your birth will now
be announced. Stand for your sentence.”
Sasuke felt Shikamaru’s hand upon his elbow, silently urging
him to stand. He was grateful for the supporting hand that stayed even after he
was on his feet; his legs felt weak, unable to support his weight as he stood,
visibly trembling, before the men and women who held his life in the palms of
their hands. His vision and hearing were fuzzy, he felt oddly disconnected from
his highly-trained body as if he had already left it. His eyes shone with
unshed tears as he clung to whatever hope he still had though it was receding
from him like a flood, leaving him within the glare of judgement about to be
passed, with nothing to protect his heart from the cold certainty that was
enveloping him. Within his mind, he saw again the white fog in which he had met
Itachi, he saw his brother’s loving smile and his promise that the young Uchiha
still had so much to live for. He felt his strength returning, once again
filling him with the famous Uchiha pride and arrogance, as he lightly brushed
away Shikamaru’s comforting hand and faced the council. Standing tall and
proud, he glared at them in defiance; the last Uchiha showing no weakness,
refusing to give them what they wanted and living up to the name that was about
to become extinct. He stood, unflinching, as his fate was announced,
“Uchiha Sasuke, you are hereby sentenced to death. Your
execution will take place at sunset. That is the final decision of the supreme
council of Konoha and none can change it. That is all.”
The courtroom erupted into angry yells and protests. None
noticed as the young, dark-haired boy lowered his head and, sadness and sorrow
laced within his voice, confessed that which he had told no one and regretted
never uttering before that moment.
“Naruto…I love you.”
