The square frame was made of pure silver with little flowers all around the border. Inside the border was a young beautiful woman smiling gently at the camera. Her blue eyes competing with the very sky that shone in the background. The long silky mane of brown covering her soft cheeks and shoulders. She had on a long blue flowing dress that made her eyes sparkle even more. But what was breath taking about her whole visage was her protruding stomach and aura. A person could practically see her radiating as she had gently rubbed her stomach. But another hand was on her own, the hand attached to a young man right beside her. His narrow and stock face glancing at the camera showing nothing of what he was thinking. His sharp icy green eyes boring into the camera blonde hair covering his face and shadowing his eyes. His attire was nothing spectacular just a dark blue turtle neck with black slacks. It was his eyes though that puzzled Naruto, even though the man’s face was like a slate, the eyes screamed out tenderness for this woman.
Was he the one to push Cloud into thinking about Soldier, or was it the silver haired man, that Cloud seemed so fascinated with. Would Cloud go to Midgar and join even after his own father was killed because of them, Shinra.
Narrowing his blue eyes Naruto watched the flames dance in the hearth. He was going because there might be a chance to learn about himself, to learn of his forgotten past. He did not want to stay here in this quiet peaceful village and become a burden to his friends. Looking up Naruto let his eyes un focus on the picture looking at his distorted self staring back.
Who was he?
The air was crisp for a change bringing with it the wind from the west. It was quiet and peaceful not a monster insight from the neighboring mountains. Naruto was outside by the little wooden porch with Kyo right beside him.
The fox laying down and looking lazily out of one eye through the small village.
People were still out but not many, most of them were having dinner right now. The sun was just setting under the raised mountains, and soon the artificial lights would be shining out through the homes. Bathing the center well and the surrounding dirt paths. And speak of the devil, Naruto watched as small lights went on throughout the street casting it’s glow all around the dusty place. Sighing Naruto shifted before leaning against the wooden white poll.
He was waiting for Cloud to come back from the crystal cave, he had wanted to get the rest of his belongings there before they headed off for Midgar. But it was now growing late and the monsters would be out soon. Grumbling Naruto remembered how Cloud and he had argued about the trip and where to put Cloud’s belongings.
Naruto had opted to just leave them in his room but Cloud had different ideas.
“No I don’t want anyone to go rifling through my possessions.” Cloud had stated adamantly.
“No one goes into your house Cloud, what are you afraid your mom might see something.” Naruto replied in a tight voice.
“There personal and besides it’s the principle of the matter.” Cloud finished, not letting up on his decision.
He had wanted to put his materia in a safe at the old mansion and leave the rest of his things at the cave until now. Naruto had asked why not just put all the belongings in one spot, and Cloud had countered that he never did that and it was ‘safer this way.’
“The materia is rare and I don’t want to take any chances. The local kids have broken into our house before. Besides no one ever goes into the mansion anymore.”
It wasn’t safer it was down right inconvenient and now here he was waiting for Cloud to come back from the cave.
Then on the last day before they would leave for Midgar they would go to the mansion and grab the materia from the safe because Cloud, and this was quoted, “did not trust anyone with his materia.”
Glowering Naruto turned to the left to see the main entrance through Nibelheim. Apparently some guards from Shinra or something were just outside the small thick hedged entrance talking to some of the residence about the monster’s and fiend increase.
“Hey you little shit.” An old voice rang out.
Naruto turned his eyes to land on Mr. Goldenbaum, the residents asshole. “Hey I’m talking to you, you ungrateful little shit.” He old man repeated in his crocked voice. Turning his head Naruto stared at the man, letting his hair fall into his blue eyes.
Oh look the old retch even addressed him in Junnon. How thoughtful of the old coot. Naruto snorted.
“Where’s your other trouble making half.” Mr. Goldenbaum spat on the dirt covered floor right by his feet.
This time the old timer switched to the slang of Nible, but Naruto understood enough of it. Staring at the old man Naruto neither spoke nor seemed to acknowledge him. Finally the old man gave up and hobbled away muttering about unnatural shit heads.
Grinning Naruto turned his head back to the entrance. He didn’t feel like indulging the population of Nibelheim today.
The guards were most likely going to stay at the old mansion. How were they going to get the materia now. If he could he would have gone right into the old place and grabbed the box weather Cloud approved or not but he didn’t know the damn combination nor where it was concealed. Another thing however was bothering him, the monsters.
At first Naruto didn’t know what a monster was. The monsters or fiends as some call them, were basically wild animals that had cross bred. They were vicious and if they had gotten into mako, the life energy force of the world, then the animal would become insane and start attacking at random. There were all kinds of different monsters, the local wolfs to the local dragons. They all had something in common they would never venture into the actual village. But that had changed when the Nibel wolfs had started to come into or close to the village. It was easy enough to chase off the monster with Kyo and Cloud by his side. They had even started up a small deliveries business getting rid of the fiends and getting paid for it. But what would happen when they felt for Midgar.
Shaking his thoughts away for another time Naruto stood silently alone with Kyo by his side. A little worried Naruto gazed up at the hill where Cloud was supposed to be but wasn’t. He was taking a longer time then estimated. If Mrs. Strife came back and found Cloud gone she would get worried and stressed, leaving Naruto to comfort her. Don’t get him wrong he liked Mrs. Strife and loved her cooking but he was just not used to hands on, didn’t like to be touched very often. He had blamed that on his past.
Twitching Naruto saw that the guards and some other people accompanying them were indeed going to spend the night here to check out the disturbances. He could tell right away most of them didn’t want to be here in this backwater small village, while the villagers didn’t want the Shinra guards around either. It would be entertaining if they all got into a big fight. Some action right about now would be much appreciated. From what he had learned in the many months of staying here was that the guards were from Shinra on the account of their blue uniform and helmets. It also looked like they were of a low class, in all likelihood rookies maybe one or two veterans. No First Class Solider maybe Third Class, but what caught his attention were the scientists. Why were they here, maybe to test the water see why the beasts came down so far from their habitat. Or maybe they came for another job entirely, checking on the reactor and the equipment.
From what Naruto could see as they starting to walk by the house, there were about three to five scientists. Naruto didn’t know very much about Shinra but at the way the guards were walking surrounding the scientists, and at the way the villagers were muttering and stepping aside. This apparently didn’t happen often. Naruto stayed right where he was not moving an inch when the guards had finally reached him and Kyo passing by their house. They were heading off towards the old mansion. Were they going to stay for awhile? It looked like it with all their equipment being lugged behind the many guards and there guns. Naruto uttered a sigh, he knew it, they were staying at the mansion where Clouds ‘precious’ materia was. Lost in thought, petting his fox on the head he marveled.
What was with the mansion anyway, why not burn it down. It looked quite worn down with it’s old creaking floor boards and it’s chipped dark weathered paint. No one lived in it well the ghosts presumably do but Naruto wasn’t really a fan of the supernatural. He didn’t believe in fate, he believed in making fate do his biding thus there was no fate. Humming he had absently counted at least fifteen guards not including the scientists. A faint glow cut Naruto’s musing to a end when it was the scientists turn to come up and pass the blonde. They seemed to be carrying glowing green boxes? Each scientist had a box in hand except the last man. He had to be a scientist, wearing a white long coat that reached passed his knees just like all the other scientists previously. Unless the man was looking for fashion he was the leader. He wore glasses of a typical man of science, he had thin short brownish black hair that already looked like it was greying a little, and a small hunch in his posture as he walked. His gait was smooth though as he looked around the village with seemingly distaste. All the other scientists both men and women were a little up ahead talking to some of the villagers and ignoring others like they didn’t exist. Walking around like they owned the place and it’s people, treating them like slaves. Naruto glared at the smug bastard’s back, they weren’t welcome here and some of the other villagers, the ones that weren’t scared proved it just like Naruto.
Speaking of bastards where was Cloud, he should be here to. Naruto turned his head a little to look out into the darkening grounds where the hill was. He had also seen Mrs. Strife walking this way too, ‘Shit come on Cloud’...
Naruto was momentarily startled when he heard a rough cough from his right. Wrenching his head about, he met with two twin brown eyes with glasses on them. The brown had dredged up memories of when he was lying in the sick slimy water back at the cave. Naruto than realized that it was the scientist whom was showing his disgust for the village only a minute ago.
He didn’t want to talk, he had better things to do. Why couldn’t the guy bother one of the other villagers about their questions concerning the monsters. Naruto just stood there looking at the man with his hand on Kyo, he really didn’t want to be responsible for an attack. The brown haired man was just staring at Naruto and the fox for a minute, like he was showing Naruto that he could take all the time in the world. Rolling his eyes mentally Naruto nodded ever so slightly, telling the man he had his attention.
“You are one of the boys who chase the fiends off, but how.” He stated.
“Why.“ He finished in a silky nasally voice.
Naruto looked at the guy trying to see if he was actually serious, “We run at them swinging swords and rocks, sometimes Kyo helps.” Naruto said simply, hoping the guy would leave. He had better things to do not play twenty questions. He had to find Cloud.
“But why.” The man questioned again.
“Because we need to protect the village.” Naruto answered tight lipped.
“Ah but what about the inhabitants of said village.” The man shot back before he continued, not giving the blonde any time to guess about the last question.
“Have you lived here long.”
Shaking his head Naruto remained straight with tense shoulders. “You must be the one called Naruto then the foreigner.” He mumbled before he did a light step of his feet.
Naruto all the while was looking at this crazed man in wonderment. This old man at least in his fifties maybe even more was moving his feet about like he was following a tune. This crazy old man who knew Naruto’s name, probably from one of the villagers, asking about his orientation.
“What is this small creature,” the man said slightly interested in the fox.
Snapping out of his thoughts Naruto could already see those brown eyes alight with questions and calculations.
Scowling at the man, “He’s just a ordinary fox.” He said casually with a bitter undertone, warning the man to leave.
The man pushed up his glasses with his forefinger then looked back at Naruto smiling sweetly. Naruto wasn’t sure why but he hated that smile.
“Why does the fox have red eyes.” He said, trying to dig deeper for information, Naruto could only assume.
Naruto expressionlessly answered, “He’s an exotic type.” He finished, not looking at the man anymore willing him away from him and the house.
The man looked like he wanted to talk more but the other scenists were calling his name. Hojo, the man’s name apparently was looked at Naruto one last time, like he was putting Naruto’s face and name together before moving on. Talking to some other people along the way towards the mansion.
Naruto watched the weird little man go for several moments before heading out to find Cloud. He was half way towards the hill when he saw spiky blonde hair. Laughing Naruto ran the rest of the way ignoring some shouts about not running, like it was a church or something.
“Man I’m going to strangle you Cloudy, I had to sit and keep an old guy company until you returned.” Naruto remarked loudly, swinging his hand around Clouds shoulder steering him towards home. Cloud snorted trying not to laugh at his friends antics.
On the way home Naruto told him about the guards and scientists, wanting a second opinion from Cloud. “No this has not happened before, but neither has the monsters been this bold before.” Was the soft reply.
“So there were no Soldiers only Shinra grunts.” Cloud mussed.
Naruto looked at Cloud under his blonde fringe, trying to see what was wrong, “Oi what’s with you Spiky,” Naruto said loudly waiting for Cloud’s retort and he wasn’t disappointed either.
“Your one to talk, why don’t you go look in a mirror sometime. You know one of those things that reflect your image.” Cloud said sarcastically walking ahead of the now silently fuming blonde.
Huffing Naruto flipped Cloud off before treading after his odd friend. Absently glancing around Naruto caught sight of Kyo still by the house. Turning his head he met with Clouds back, subconscious letting his eyes drift to the lower back. The only thought that filtered through his brain was, ‘those are some tight jeans,’ he could practically see all the curves in Cloud’s posture. Shaking off the odd thought Naruto caught up to the silent blonde.
When they got into the house Cloud sighed dropping onto the couch, stretching. “Nothing I’m just going to miss this place a little that’s all.” He admitted. Cloud himself was a little shocked at what he had stated out loud. Him missing this little village. But it was true he would miss the village but not the villagers so much.
Naruto sat down beside him not fully aware what he meant by this statement. Looking blankly for a moment he mussed over what Cloud had said, only just realizing what he had meant. “Hey Cloud we don’t leave for another two days relax and enjoy what is left of it. You’ll be back here just wait and see.” Naruto finished getting ready for bed. All the while trying to tell himself the exact same thing. He really would miss this place, it had become a home for him. A real home where he could be proud to say it out loud. In the program at Midgar he would not have that feeling. Sighing softly Naruto stretched into the nice warm bed with Kyo right on top of him.
Cloud stared at the dark ceiling memorizing the spider web cracks, while he tossed and turned listening to the beginnings of a small rain shower. He just could not seem to fall asleep, to say he was getting irritated would be an understatement. He kept thinking over the small conversation they had before bed. The Shinra military was here but they were scheduled to leave tomorrow or the next day. That left Cloud to get into the mansion and get the rest of his possessions. Naruto just did not understand that his treasure was basically his whole childhood and that he would go to extreme lengths to protect it. That was the only reason why Cloud had hidden them away in the mansion and not in the cave anymore, or his room where his mom would most likely spot them. He would just have to wait until the soldiers left and hoped they did before it was time to go to Midgar. Turning his head slightly he caught sight of Naruto next to his bed. The blonde was out cold with his mouth half open. Cloud smiled glad he had met Naruto when he had. He absently watched as his friends chest rose and dropped, the way his hair was covering half of his tanned face. He wondered if Naruto was a real blonde. Cloud stopped his thinking right there. He did not want to know nor care. Frowning he twisted and turned his back to Naruto. He had been having strange thoughts lately about his friend. Wondering if he was tan everywhere or if he tasted sweet with all the chocolate Naruto always consumed. It was disturbing to say the least, thinking about all this now. He was a male for God sakes, and Naruto was his friend, male friend at that. Besides he liked Tifa, which was a female. Shaking his head, Cloud stiffly shifted the blankets. This was going to be one long night.
The next day was just as peaceful for Naruto as any other day. Stifling a yawn he looked around the quiet place. It was still early morning. The sun had just barley risen over an hour ago through the high topped mountains. Some of the villagers were out, walking around the village dirt streets and laughing at some joke disrupting the quiet. The only new thing was that the local kids were bragging about going into the old mansion now that the scientists had left earlier that day. The crazy freaks had left even before dawn, they only had one or two stragglers in the vicinity the mansion grounds guarding it for some reason. Maybe not all the military personal had left yet. Cloud had gotten up even earlier and he was glad for once. He was all alone with Kyo by his side. Mrs. Strife was out and he had the whole house all to himself. Which was good because he seriously needed to sort through his messed up mind. The dream he had was almost too real for his own liking, it wasn’t an nightmare or even a real dream, if that made any sense. No it was more like picture shots in time, be it the past present or future.
A large looming mountain towering over a village surrounded by tress. Nameless faces walking around waving or smiling ghostly disfigured smiles. Then the atmosphere had changed to tall looming metal structures and light flashing at random times all around him. In the background he swore he heard children at play. Then he just had to wake up back here in Nibelmiem with Cloud’s bed already made for the day. Grunting Naruto shoved his cold hands inside his black sweat pants, he really did miss Cloud.
Cloud searched around the village in the early morning, walking around and sidestepping the muddy puddles when needed. Naruto had been asleep when he had gotten up, thank God. He did not want to explain to his friend why he had strong morning wood. He really couldn’t help it, his damn mind had a mind of it’s own last night.
Oh don’t get him wrong he had a very nice dream last night, or it would have been. Like any normal young male he had a secret stash of porn right under his old history book.
Who would ever look there.
His dream had been another faceless pretty woman, touching and stroking him. The skin was soft and silky just like the lush hair spreading all over the silk covered bed, it was heaven. But then things started to change. The skin tone was off, instead of white, it was tan. The hair, still soft had become short, and the curves had changed. The chest once fluffed up was now hard along with the stomach. Hands grabbed at his shoulders dragging him down towards the body with blue eyes locking into his own sweaty face. Just as the bodies had moved and glided up Cloud had woken with a start.
Needless to say he was a little freaked so he was left to walk around. The more he thought about it the clearer it had become. Dreams were in their own league of mind they were just there, not making any sense and occasionally not abiding by the laws of nature.
He did not want to try and wake up Naruto, last time he nearly got his head knocked off and he still had scars where Kyo had bite him. But he was pretty sure he wouldn’t have woken Naruto up anyway just to discus his erotic dream. Sighing Cloud ran a hand through his spiked hair, maybe he shouldn’t have eaten those chips before bed. They were probably the damn cause of his dreams, that and reading porn before going to bed. Turning the corner he spotted the group of local kids all surrounding one of the main mansion entrance. Puzzled he walked up casually, not wanting to start a fight so early in the morning.
“...Went in there, don’t know for how long.” One of them were saying, Cloud noted that he had black hair.
“He should have come out.” Another said sounding scared.
Cloud frowned not liking this one bit, what were they talking about. But even as he thought this he already had an inking suspicion.
“I don’t know lets get out of here.” Their leader Cloud supposed said, turning around only to be met with Cloud.
“What do you want shortly shit.” He said instantly smiling.
Cloud narrowed his eyes, “Can you come up with anything better then that.” He said not really interested in the answer.
“Hey lets go man I don’t want to get caught.” The black haired one said again.
“Quiet it’s not our fault he went into the mansion. He was stupid enough to take the dare, not my fault.” The leader said right back at the dark haired man.
Cloud was now extremely annoyed and curious, who was stupid enough to have gone into the mansion. Cloud stopped dead his breath hitching for a moment. His most valued possessions were in there, what if this guy had found... Cloud didn’t even bother hearing what else the local kids were saying and raced home.
What if this kid had found them, or what if the stupid kid had gone in there without any weapons. He could be dead right now for all Cloud knew. But one thing he did know for a fact was that he needed to grab his possession before he left for Midgar, before anyone else grabbed it. He would need his sword, there were monsters all about that mansion, even if the little group of guards had cleared most of them out the mansion always had more. He briefly considered taking Tifa with him but he didn’t have time, he needed to find the idiot fast. Bursting through the house Cloud charged up the stairs and into his and Naruto’s room. Naruto sat up puzzled as he watched Cloud run up the stairs muttering something under his breath. Naruto frowned, Cloud was acting like a madman.
“Cloud what the fuck, it’s too early for your weird shit.” Naruto shouted eying the ceiling for a response.
Kyo just laid on the couch bearing his narrowed little head between the cushions possibly thinking that it was also to early for this.
“Get up now Naruto, we need to go into the mansion.” Cloud yelled back down the stairs while grabbing his sword.
Instantly awake Naruto quickly got up, grabbing his knife weapons. He did not know what was going on but Cloud sounded urgent. Looking up when he heard Cloud’s footsteps thundering down the stairs. He saw the young man practically charge back through the front door slamming the wood on the side of the house. Growling Naruto quickly put on his boots before he too raced out the door. Mrs. Strife wasn’t there, she had gone to the market to make a big feast for her boys before they left tomorrow for Midgar.
What was Cloud thinking, they were supposed to go into the mansion tomorrow to grab his precious possessions. Naruto thought moodily. Heaving Naruto and Kyo
ran down the dirt path kicking up dust as they went. Trying to find Cloud, before he really did anything stupid.
Running a little faster Naruto raced towards the old mansion already seeing Cloud up ahead. Cloud was probably panicking over nothing, like he tended to do quite often. That and brooding, Cloud was very good at that with his silence and quiet disposition.
When he finally reached the mansion Naruto slowed down to a dead walk, just looking at the towering building before him. The thing was so huge it was blocking out the sun, casting a dark shadow over the land, like a death cloud. He could honestly say that he had never seen anything like this. Even from a distance he had thought the place looked bad but up close.
The roof even looked like it was going to cave in at some areas around the house. The windows were all bordered up or extremely dirty and around the house itself there was dead grass and skeleton like trees. The door to the mansion was half open, creaking on it’s hinges. Naruto breathed out looking at the other blonde to his right wearily. Kyo was up ahead sniffing the ground, looking like he was ready to go into the old mansion. Shaking his head Naruto was about to say something when Cloud raised his hand up before slowly walking up the rest of the way, his sword at the ready.
‘This is insane,’ Naruto commented in his head before moving on. But he figured he was already insane for following.
Cloud looked over his shoulder a little to see if Naruto had actually complied and when he saw the blonde move up he turned slowly towards the old house breathing deeply. When they both stepped into the house they could see a mass of spider webs. Some even looked like they had been disturbed. The floor was filled with dust and dry dead leaves along with foot prints on the old wooden floors.
The power was on surprisingly but it kept flickering on and off every so often. It was just them in this huge mansion it seemed. Naruto walked a little up ahead, listening to his own feet thud and squeak, along with the fox. Checking out some pictures randomly or looking at a certain furniture that had caught his eye. There would be shadowed movement from time to time indicating weak fiends not wanting to attack. Cloud on the other hand had his sword out, chasing away any weak monsters that did if ever venture to close, while looking into rooms and seeing if they were locked or inhabited. They had yet to encounter any strong monsters through there searching. But they hadn’t seen anybody else either.
“Oi lets check up stairs.” Naruto whispered loudly, curious about this place now that he was actually in the mansion. There was a lot of things that had caught his eye. The only thing Naruto didn’t like though were the mirrors. There was at least two in each room along with faded rug designs and no foot prints.
Cloud nodded his head briefly after hearing Naruto’s suggestion, wanting to find his father’s materia as soon as possible. He had a bad feeling about this place and he didn’t like it one bit. Sighing Cloud had to snicker on that last thought, he was beginning to sound like his mother, the horror. But enough of that, they were supposed to be leaving tomorrow for Midgar not trespassing in some Shinra mansion. The guards and the scientists had already left supposedly, with the helicopter that had came through the mountains earlier. So it was just him Naruto and the fox, oh and the bet taking idiot.
They continued up the stairs trying to not make a sound throughout the mansion. Dust was everywhere they turned in big plums and when they had finally reached the top floor they had to continually stop from sneezing out loud.
Looking at each other Naruto ventured, “Lets split...” But he stopped as he finally focused behind Cloud’s shoulder.
There in the shadows was one if not the ugliest monster Naruto had ever seen. It’s body was disfigured and shaped wrong as if a child had tried to put the pieces together again after they had broken it. The eyes glowed an eerie black reflecting Naruto’s face right back at him. But the weirdest part was that it was floating. Eyes wide listening to his heart beat rapidly and Kyo’s throaty growl Naruto shouted out a warning just as Cloud had done.
Both leaping, stepping aside each other as they passed weapons in hand ready. The next thing Naruto heard was a clashing of swords on all sides it seemed as he had slashed at this inhuman creature.
The monster yelled and withered as it tried to defend itself. But Naruto gave it no chance of retaliating back with magic nor strikes. Swinging his short sword around he cut deeply into the thing, spilling it’s dark blue essence on the cold dirty ground. Hearing Kyo leap from his haunches and attacking the already injured fiend Naruto chanced a glance over his shoulder to see his friend also battling a monster. Cloud was slicing and hacking away at a yellow blob of some kind. Turning Naruto saw Kyo finish the threat before the fox retreated back to it’s master. Looking on Naruto straightened just as Cloud did, hearing each others harsh breathing.
Chuckling Naruto shook as his frame trembled. Cloud echoed the laugh, wiping sweat from his brow. And too think they were only weak monsters.
This was a fun chapter for me to write and I’m pretty proud of it but this was originally not the whole thing. It was much
longer. Anyway the characters are coming out smoother and I’m trying to keep it within the games with twists and turns.
But anyway thanks for reading.
