every finger in the room is pointing at me
I wanna spit in their faces
then I get afraid of what that could bring
I got a bowling ball in my stomach
I got a desert in my mouth
figures that my COURAGE would choose to sell out now
I’ve been raising up my hands
drive another nail in
just what GOD needs one more victim
every day I crucify myself
nothing I do is good enough for you
and my HEART is sick of being in chains
you’re just an empty cage kid if you kill the bird
please be save me I CRY

Chapter V There Is No Life Without Honesty
Shikamaru sat near the shōgi-board in his usual lax position, Neji sitting properly on his knees on the other side even though they were sitting on a hilltop. He rolled his eyes at the other’s behaviour but old habits die hard, he guessed. They had bumped into each other in the streets of Konoha, Shikamaru having some time off since Temari was in a meeting with the Hokage and Neji had been given a free day to recover from his vigorous three-month training, leading to his acceptance into ANBU Core. A relaxing game of shōgi had sounded tempting to both of them so here they were.
“So, everyone has barely seen you these last months.”
Neji nodded, his eyes remaining focused on the board. “They made me train for thirteen hours every day and I was always so exhausted that I constantly fell asleep with my clothes still on. Much like you do,” he added laughing. Shikamaru snorted and lit a cigarette. As he saw Neji smiling, he thought that if he would let other people besides him and Itachi see this side of him, perhaps life would be a lot easier on him. But he wasn’t really one to talk since he only really opened up to Temari.
“Didn’t see Itachi a lot then?” Neji bowed his head deeper but the blush on his cheeks was unmistakable.
“Itachi was the one who trained me.” Shikamaru let out a rumbling laughter, stretching his hand out to one of the pawns but looked up as he sensed someone approaching. A few seconds later, Itachi dropped down from a nearby tree and landed silently next to them, kneeling down.
“Nara-kun,” he bowed respectfully. Shikamaru frowned as he was so formally addressed.
“Shikamaru.” Itachi smirked slightly.
“Shikamaru-kun then.” He then turned to Neji and gave him a chaste kiss. Shikamaru thought Neji would have shied away from the touch since he was looking but the contrary was true. Neji simply closed his eyes briefly, slightly leaning closer towards Itachi. These months they spent together must have really paid off. It was nice to see them both unwinding a bit, away from all the expectations.
“Interested in a game of shōgi, Itachi-san?” Neji looked angrily at him but Shikamaru held up a hand before he could even open his mouth. “Admit it, Neji, you’re way too tired to play a decent game.” Neji huffed but moved to the side, allowing Itachi to take his place.
“I’ve heard you’re nearly unbeaten,” Itachi said as they placed the pawns back in their starting position.
“Meh, just haven’t found a lot of people that can pose a real challenge.”
Itachi took his time to make his move, knowing Shikamaru’s reputation in the strategic field before sliding a pawn forward. He looked to his side to find Neji stifling a yawn and slightly moved his eyes. Neji came closer and laid his head in his lap, his body stretched out on the grass. Itachi looked across the board and saw Shikamaru looking strangely, confusion clear. Knowing that he was a friend of Neji’s and therefore someone they could trust, he gave him a tiny smile before looking back at the board, his left hand stroking Neji’s head.
Shikamaru shook his head, almost wanting to pinch himself to see if he was dreaming. It was so hard to fathom that Itachi and Neji, both having cold and distant personalities could have made such a change in each other.
“Your move,” Itachi reminded him. Shikamaru focused back on the board, slightly surprised at the unconventional opening of his opponent. He voiced his thoughts and saw Itachi shrugging.
“Because a normal approach won’t work with you.”
“I’m flattered,” Shikamaru snorted. He looked back at him and how he was still petting the back of Neji’s head, the gesture unusually kind before focusing on the board.

“Your father wants to speak with you, Itachi-kun,” his mother said as he slipped out of his sandals. He’d had a great time this afternoon, simply enjoying a game of shōgi with Nara Shikamaru – he lost though – and having Neji close but his mother’s comment was enough to crush any positive feelings he might have had. “He’s waiting for you in the living room.” He nodded and walked to the room, sliding the door open. His father was indeed waiting for him with his usual stern face. Itachi kneeled before him, giving him a small bow.
“This has been going on long enough, Itachi-kun. You’re turning twenty-one in a few months and you still haven’t shown any interest in any of the girls we’ve introduced to you.”
“None of them are interesting, otou-san and their reasons for wanting to marry me aren’t any I can agree with.” Fugaku felt anger rising up in him at his son’s disrespectful behaviour.
“You would better start listening to me, boy! I have been very lenient with you but my patience is wearing thin.”
Itachi made eye-contact, not in the least frightened by his father’s reaction. “I don’t intend to marry a girl that doesn’t know me and only wants me for my status.”
“So you seriously want a girl that loves you? You’re an Uchiha and everything you do should be for the improvement for this clan. I am not the only clan-elder that is fed up with your resistance.”
Black turned to red, three tomoe forming. “I have acted in the clan’s benefit for my entire life already. I have done everything and more than was expected from me. But I will choose myself who my significant other will be.” Itachi stood up, even though he hadn’t been given permission and left his father behind, calmly walking out. He slid the door shut behind him and continued to his room.
“Yes, Sasuke?” His brother hurried until he was next to him.
“Otou-san is really mad at you, aniki. Perhaps you should better listen to him.” It came out hesitant but Itachi knew that it wasn’t meant to be patronizing but said out of genuine worry.
“Don’t let him dictate your life, Sasuke. Make your own choices and become greater than this godforsaken clan.” Sasuke’s eyes widened, shock clearly written on his face. He’d had no idea Itachi viewed their clan with such resentment. He stared after his brother and gnawed on his bottom lip. But didn’t we pledge loyalty to our clan, just like we did to the Leaf? He had disobeyed his own father once by maintaining a friendship with Naruto but friendship was a whole different matter than an arranged marriage, right?
[-]
They hurried as silently as possible through the trees, careful that they weren’t being followed. Itachi looked briefly at Neji, trying to gauge his feelings. It was his second mission as ANBU Core and what they’d had to do was so essentially wrong if you looked at the moral side but someone needed to do these jobs and this time it was them. Neji knew that if he were to close his eyes, he would still see those children’s faces contorting as blood streamed out of their little bodies. Their blood was caked on his hands still and even if he washed it off, he would know it was there. All he was glad about was that Itachi was with him and at least that consoled him a little. Everyone that had heard the bits of information about ANBU Core and about his admission had warned him about the psychological aspect and Neji had tried to brace himself against it but it was still very hard to deal with the fact that he had murdered innocent children. But he was told that everyone needed to be killed and so he and Itachi had eradicated everyone in the clan’s district since they apparently were planning a coup d’état against their village.
“The children would have grown up to hate the village that didn’t prevent their family from getting killed.” Neji was startled at Itachi’s comment but hung his head. “They would have become a liability.”
“I know.” They moved further in silence, both needing some time to think the recent events over. Even for Itachi, who had been a member of ANBU for seven years already, moments like these were essential to stay sane. Neji suddenly bent to the right, a kunai grazing the sky where his throat had been less than a second ago.
A figure landed on a nearby tree branch and laughed loudly, clearly not interested in trying to hide his presence for a surprise-attack. The man had a bizarre blue skin-tone and scars that resembled the gills of a shark. An enormous sword, the blade itself covered in wrappings rested seemingly effortless on the man’s shoulders. But more importantly, his large frame was covered in a black cloak adorned with white clouds lined in red. The trademark of Akatsuki. Neji could still vividly remember the previous time he had fought this Hoshigaki Kisame and how much it had demanded of him physically. With his Byakugan, he could clearly see the absurd amount of chakra the man held in his chakra- circulatory system and even his sword was cramped with it.
Both Itachi and Neji took on their fighting-stance and waited to see what the Akatsuki-member’s intentions were.
“Well, what do we have here? Two ANBU, far, far away from home.” He seemed to assess them for a moment before grinning at Neji, showing sharp teeth. “Ah, I remember you. Your mask doesn’t hide you well.” Neji answered by removing his mask and hanging it at his belt. Kisame leaned his sword against the tree-trunk and took his own stance before rapidly forming hand-signs.
“Suiton: Bakusui Shōha!” Neji knew what was coming and quickly signalled to Itachi, both teleporting to avoid getting caught in the wave of water that streamed out of Kisame’s mouth. They watched, perched high in a nearby tree as Kisame calmly walked on top of the provisional lake, his sword, Samehada held in his hand.
“Come out, come out wherever you are,” he sang in a gruff voice. Neji focused on their enemy’s circulatory system with his Byakugan, hoping to find his weak spot and saw Itachi forming hand-signs. He had trained with him more than enough to know what he was planning. Five clones appeared around Kisame, who unwrapped his sword, exposing its rough, scaled surface. Before he could swing his sword, Itachi quickly moved his hands.
“Bunshin Daibakuha.” The clones exploded but Neji and Itachi both knew that wouldn’t defeat their opponent. Kisame was still standing in the same spot, not even wavering.
Neji gave a quick signal to Itachi before moving away to the opposite side of Kisame. An attack on two sides was harder to deflect than on one after all.
Itachi understood what was going on. Akatsuki was still a group of missing-nin but they only engaged in a fight if their objective was at stake. The motif behind this encounter was that Madara wanted to know how good Neji was and see if he was worth the trouble of saving. He was slightly surprised that he had given the order so fast but then again, Madara had always made it clear that he wanted Itachi to join his organization and if that meant that two would become a member, then he apparently wasn’t averse to the idea. He did question why he hadn’t sent someone else since Neji had already fought this one but maybe he was the most suitable to test his talent once more. All he would do was help Neji on his way since he needed him to expose his genius so that Kisame could tell Madara he was worth the extra trouble. He stretched out his hand in the direction of Kisame and flicked his index-finger forward. Now it’s up to you, Neji.
“Utakata.” Flocks of ravens hid the already limited light in the forest even more as they descended onto Kisame who lifted his Samehada. Itachi wasn’t disappointed as he saw Neji crouching down on the ground, activating his Hakke Hyaku Nijūhachi Shō. He ran forward, using the current attack on Kisame as a slight cover before hitting the hand holding his Samehada first and then his other, preventing any chakra from reaching them and making sure he could no longer lift the sword. Since his opponent had such vast resources of chakra, he would probably be able to activate his tenketsu again through pure determination, much like Naruto had done once but as he landed hit after hit he had already thought of his next move. As he had suspected, Kisame was affected by his attack but still held an extensive supply of chakra and it would be a matter of minutes before his tenketsu reopened.
Kisame wielded his Samehada and swung it towards Neji, who retaliated by performing his Hakke Kūshō, pushing Kisame away and making him stumble. Assessing the situation and seeing some of Kisame’s attacked tenketsu slowly receiving their owner’s chakra again, he responded quickly. The technique he was about to use would swiftly kill any other enemy but at least it would make the Akatsuki-member weaker, making it possible for Neji to afterwards kill him with a kunai-attack. He rushed forward, his arm already stretched forward and his hand held up.
Kisame only saw a blur as he was hit and hit at such an incredible speed and so many times that it was almost enough to make him dizzy. He luckily was still able to lift his Samehada but the kid was fast enough to duck, his attack which must have demanded a lot of his chakra, not deterring him in the least or so it seemed.
“Hakke Hazangeki,” Neji yelled, angry that Kisame was still able to move quite fluidly. He aimed to hit Kisame straight in his chest but the man’s sword was put in his way and he could just stop his arm from continuing its attack. If he had made direct contact with Samehada, he would have damaged his hand to the point of rendering it completely useless. Although the sword didn’t absorb the full extent of his attack, his Byakugan helped him to see that he had made a weak point in its surface and it was now losing chakra. It was clear that Kisame was highly surprised as he took in the state of his trustworthy sword and Neji once again rushed forward, hoping this would knock him down. The blow took Kisame’s breath away and he fell to the ground, trembling as waves of alien chakra flowed through him. He forced his hands to move and spat out the necessary words with effort.
“Suiton: Suikōdan no Jutsu.” The remaining water of his first attack gathered again and formed itself into the shape of a shark, coming at Neji with a deadly speed. Neji jumped back and landed ten metres further but the shark was still fast-approaching.
“Kaiten!” Barely in time, he started spinning around and felt drops of water all around his body and knew the shark-form was disappearing, his Byakugan confirming this. He stopped his jutsu and rushed to Kisame but was pleased as he saw the man with his eyes closed and having some difficulty forcing oxygen in his throat. He didn’t like to admit it but he was shaking on his own legs, the ground looking very tempting. Never had he been pushed this far but it was a great challenge. He felt thankful that Itachi only helped him in the beginning and let him handle the rest of the fight. He stared at where Itachi sat but he dropped down from the trees and walked over to him.
Itachi saw the exhilarated but tired look on Neji’s face. As much as being a shinobi revolved around team-work, nothing felt as good as defeating an opponent by yourself and Neji knew that if things had taken a turn for the worst, Itachi would have more forcibly intervened.
Kisame groaned but was back on his feet fast. Neji’s pleased smile faltered and Itachi moved closer to the Akatsuki-member, seemingly preparing for attack.
“And?” he whispered silently enough for only Kisame to hear.
Kisame grinned, picking up his sword and laying it on his shoulder. “It’s going to be fun having such a feisty little thing among us.” With that he disappeared into a tree and left them behind, Neji now stomping his foot in frustration.
“All those attacks and he just gets up and walks away as if it’s nothing!”
Itachi turned around. “Few would be able to even knock him to the ground. Find out his weak points and train so if you meet him again, you are better prepared.” It was a strange mix of praise and critique and Neji hung his head sulking. “I’ll help you train.”
“Thanks…” Itachi untied Neji’s mask from his belt and placed it back on his face before grabbing his hand and continuing their trek to Konoha.
“Should we add it in our report that Akatsuki is operating so close to the borders of Konoha?”
Itachi squeezed his hand. “We’ll talk about it at home.”
They were relieved when they saw Konoha, both craving rest. In the mission room of Hokage Tower they reported back in but didn’t submit a mission-report. ANBU Core always gave it straight to their elite’s leader. With no one in the hallways, they took off their masks and stuffed them in their small rucksacks.
“Are you okay?”
Neji shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t know. First that mission and then that run-in with that Kisame.”
Itachi gave him a kiss on his forehead which was only covered with a strip of black cloth. “Go home and freshen up a little and then come to the river.”
Neji closed his eyes as he revelled in the small touch. “Okay.” They walked to the exit just as Shikamaru was entering. He quickly noticed the state they were in, both with blood splatters over their uniform and mouths squeezed into thin lines. He knew they couldn’t go home together and wouldn’t have a chance to calm down or talk about their apparently hard mission with each other and decided to do them a favour.
“Take my house-key. I have a shift at the mission-room so just sleep in my apartment.” Neji smiled tensely and took the key from Shikamaru.
“Thanks.”
Shikamaru smirked. “Meh, just don’t make a mess.” He waved goodbye to them and Neji and Itachi nodded before going to the exit.
“I’m going home to grab some clean clothes for us.” Neji nodded and told him the address before they jumped onto a nearby roof and went separate ways.
[-]
Itachi reached the apartment and found the door unlocked. He walked in and closed the door behind him, locking it. There was the sound of water running and he quickly searched for the bathroom. The door was left open and he could see a blurred image of Neji from behind the shower screen, his uniform left discarded on the floor. He placed the extra sets of clothes on the small closet and stripped from his own dirty uniform before joining Neji in the shower. Neji’s head was hidden behind his hair but Itachi knew he was struggling with what he had done during the mission. He wrapped his arms around him and held him close, supporting his chin on the top of Neji’s head.
“Does it get any easier?” Itachi thought about it carefully, reviewing his own five years as an ANBU Core. He was sure that it would have been a lot more bearable if he’d had a confidant but even without one, he still hadn’t gone crazy. He had the occasional nightmare, yes but he didn’t remember the faces of everyone he’d killed, he didn’t think about how it had felt to slice a child’s throat. ANBU Core was nothing more than a group of mercenaries and the key to holding on was to delete the moral facet. There was no point in continuing to hold on to the belief that it was wrong, that it was inhuman.
“If you approach it in the right manner, then yes.” Neji turned in the embrace so he could face Itachi.
“And what is the right manner?” Itachi kissed him and then let out a sigh.
“To stop thinking from the heart and listen to the voice of reason. There is always a motif behind the mission and they are never unnecessary. Our targets always pose a threat, either to Konoha or another village and therefore need to be eradicated.”
Neji grabbed a sponge and wiped the blood off of Itachi, needing him, to forget about the past night. Although his body was exhausted, he knew that he wouldn’t be able to sleep tonight and he was so relieved that Shikamaru had offered them his house-key.
Itachi placed his right-hand around Neji’s cock and started stroking it, Neji quickly responding to the touches. Neji wrapped his own hand around Itachi’s half-hard erection. Itachi had made sure during their training-sessions for ANBU Core that Neji wouldn’t shy away when he touched him, that he would admit to the pleasurable sensations. The only reason why he’d had sex in the past was because it made things momentarily better, it made things disappear into the background of your conscious. The perfect substitute for therapy. With Neji, this was only the minor motif. But now he needed to help him forget. He kissed him, their tongues soon meeting and both pairs of eyes slid closed. Itachi brought their heads even closer, their hips thrusting with the jerks their erections received. He pushed Neji against the tiled wall and broke their lip-lock, sinking down to his knees. He gave Neji’s now rock-hard cock a few more jerks before enveloping it in his mouth.
Neji let out a chocked sob and spread his legs more, making the position more comfortable for both of them. The feeling of a hot mouth around his erection was so mind-blowing that he feared he might come any moment. All the previous times Itachi had given him a blowjob, he had to restrain himself from coming in a mere few seconds.
Itachi firmly grabbed Neji’s hips, preventing him from moving as he continued to swirl his tongue around the head before taking the cock in to the hilt. A desperate cry echoed through the bathroom and Neji’s hands settled on his head. Itachi looked up and saw Neji leaning against the wall, his slender chest heaving and mouth trembling. His hair formed quirky patterns and it reminded Itachi so much of the first night they had spoken. Neji was a god, bound to the earth. He moved his mouth faster, not wanting to deny him completion and slid his hand to Neji’s ass, kneading it. He spotted a bottle of liquid soap and reached for it, pouring a royal amount over two of his fingers before placing one against Neji’s anus and sliding it in. It was clear that Neji was surprised but he didn’t protest and let Itachi continue but cried out as jolts of near-painful pleasure hit him, making his knees weaken. Itachi smirked around the cock in his mouth and continued to assault Neji’s prostate. The grip on his hair tightened and Neji’s breaths became shorter and shorter.
“Oh god,” Neji cried out as he felt those telltale signs, indicating that his orgasm was close. He looked downwards and he vaguely noticed how the blood on his hands had disappeared, how he couldn’t even remember how it had looked like before his orgasm crashed through him.
Itachi swallowed the sperm hitting the back of his throat as he continued to rub over Neji’s prostate. He finally let his finger slip out and the next moment Neji nearly crashed down on the bathroom-floor, straight into his lap and he moaned as his cock made contact with Neji’s ass. A desperate mouth attached to his and he let Neji do as he pleased but was satisfyingly surprised as arms wrapped around his neck and Neji rubbed his ass against his erection. His breathing grew heavier and he buried his head in Neji’s neck, wrapping his arms tightly around a narrow waist. His mouth attached to a pale neck and he bit lightly as his hips moved frantically, his cum splattered on Neji’s ass. They kept sitting like that for a while, letting their heartbeat grow slower.
Neji reached for a shampoo-bottle and poured some in his hand, washing Itachi’s hair. Itachi let him but his eyes never strayed from Neji’s face. It would drive Neji away if he told him that while it didn’t become easier, it also became addictive to kill, to see blood spilling over your hands and knowing you’re the instigator. Even if he had passed every mental exam, even if he was still able to feel a variety of emotions, he knew it wasn’t normal that he craved to kill. But it went without doubt that the longer Neji was a member of ANBU Core, the more he would feel a similar hunger and would need to satisfy it. This was what separated an ANBU Core from the other shinobi after all. But it didn’t separate them from the rest of mankind.
[-]
Itachi absently stroked Neji’s hair as he looked at the ceiling. They were lying on a couch in the small living-room, Neji on top of him and both very much awake. Neither were able to go to sleep so they had made themselves tea and sat down in the living-room.
“Why didn’t that one from Akatsuki kill us?” Neji asked. Itachi’s hand stilled for a moment.
“What do you know about that organization?”
Neji sat up straighter and was thoroughly confused. “The members are all S-Class missing-nin and their objective is to catch all the Jinchūriki and extract them from their host for their potent amounts of chakra.”
Itachi kept looking at the ceiling. What he was about to say could have devastating effects on his relationship with Neji but he needed to give him this information, needed to begin and change his perspective on Akatsuki. How else would he be able to convince him to join the organization in a year and a half?
“Seven years ago, when I had just become ANBU I was approached by a man who introduced himself as Uchiha Madara. He was a co-founder of Konoha. I don’t know the specifics but he is immortal. He told me that my cousin was planning to annihilate our clan and that I should stop him. I confronted Shishui who admitted it and asked me to join him in his intentions. I drowned him that same night and made it look like a suicide. Madara was there as I did it and then told me that I had just obtained the Mangekyō Sharingan. The only way to obtain it is by killing your best friend,” Itachi said it, almost not believing it himself. “He apparently did all this to further my potential. Then he revealed that he was the leader of Akatsuki and wanted me to join.”
Neji’s eyes had grown wide as he heard all this information. “He didn’t kill us because he wants you to join,” he concluded.
“Hai.” Itachi had been careful to not reveal the slightest hint of his future plans concerning Akatsuki, never mentioning how he intended to have both of them join. It would be easier to just tell the whole truth but Neji was still too condemning, thinking too much in favour of Konoha. “If I put it in the mission-report, the Hokage would keep me watched and I wouldn’t be allowed to any high-ranked missions. I would become a potential danger.”
“But… why you?” It wasn’t meant insulting but while Itachi was a widely acknowledged genius, he wasn’t the only one in the world.
“I’ve been in ANBU for seven years, I’ve become used to killing the seemingly innocent and I haven’t ended up in the psychiatric ward yet. And I’m good. Akatsuki needs members like me. And Madara wants to deepen our familial bond, he said.”
“Why did you believe him when he claimed that your cousin was planning to kill your clan?”
“I got proof.” Since Itachi didn’t give any more details, Neji didn’t press further since it obviously was a still very tender subject for him.
“And why didn’t he kill me then?” Itachi straightened his neck so their eyes met.
“That, I don’t know.” Because this whole run-in was about you, not me.
Neji lay back down and drew patterns on Itachi’s chest with his finger. “And are you planning to ever join?”
“Not without you.” Neji let out a laugh, thinking it was meant jokingly but had he seen Itachi’s face, he would have seen the stern determination in his eyes.
[-]
Shikamaru landed on his kitchen’s windowsill and stepped in his apartment. He knew Itachi and Neji were still here but he just wanted to grab a fresh set of clothes before going to his parents’ house to sleep. He walked to the bedroom as silently as possible but stopped as he passed the living-room. Itachi and Neji were lying on the couch, Itachi’s body curled around Neji’s and both fast asleep. It was clear how far Neji’s trust went in Itachi since he had his forehead uncovered, exposing the curse-seal.
It was a bittersweet sight since he knew their relationship was doomed. Neji didn’t have a choice but to obey his clan and even if he didn’t have a curse-seal, both the Hyūgas and Uchihas would never approve of a relationship between the two boys that held the most potential in their respective clans, lest they shouldn’t produce any offspring to pass on their talents. But then again, Itachi probably realized this before starting a relationship with Neji and if even ten percent of the rumours about him were true, then he would have a plan already set in motion. As he looked at them, so deceivingly naïve as they lay there, he firmly decided once more that if he could help them, he would. He wasn’t a strategic genius only in the battlefield after all.

Neji had a blush creeping up his cheeks as he gnawed on his lip, leaning against Itachi’s chest. “What’s going on, Nej?”
“I… I want more.” Itachi smiled softly as he saw Neji’s embarrassment but was elated at hearing this.
