A/N: This chapter has some fluffiness with Iruka/Kakashi… I felt the need for it after the last angst ridden chapters.
Hurrah! I got reviews again. *Smiles* thanks for the reviews. I’m glad you like the story. I just want things to move faster, but I can’t make the story write faster than it shows up in my head. This story, obviously, has some au/ar factors. This chapter contains one. Please don’t tell me that they are younger when put into teams. I got that. :)
Chapter Four – Teams and Teamwork
Shikamaru smiled. They finally finished final exams. Though he would have liked to have done better on the tests themselves, it really was too troublesome. Now that they were over though, he was ready to become a ninja. He would be put on a team; Iruka was working the teams out with the other teachers right now. Neji had been telling him how much nicer it was to be on a team than to be in school. He had to figure that was right, since school was a total waste of time he could be doing anything else.
Iruka walked in and started breaking the class up into teams. Shikamaru glanced at Sasuke once in a while. After having the conversation with Naruto, he was more determined than ever to stand his ground. Sasuke was making an effort to become friends with him again, and that was the most important thing of all. Maybe if after a long period of time his feelings for Neji didn’t increase or his feelings for Sasuke didn’t decrease, he’d think about approaching Sasuke again. He was worried being on the same team may affect their ability to move on the way they should.
Iruka had mentioned teams were divided by strengths, though. That should keep him off of Sasuke’s team. They were both fairly strong and smart. They would surely need to be separated. He could maybe on a team with Chouji and Shino, although Shino was probably too strong to be put on his team. It would create the same problem as being a team with Sasuke. He’d probably get stuck with either Sakura or Ino. Either of those situations seemed almost unbearable.
Iruka cleared his throat. “Team Seven will be Sakura, Sasuke, and Naruto.” Naruto and Sasuke sighed, and feigned indifference or irritation, but Sakura squealed for joy at being on a team with her precious Sasuke. He would have to take notice of her now.
Iruka shook his head. “Team Eight will be Chouji, Shikamaru, and Ino.” Shikamaru sighed. He hit that one on the nose. At least he’d have Chouji and wouldn’t really have to concern himself with Ino on a friendly level. Ino groaned at being stuck with two of the losers. She sighed. At least Kiba and Hinata got stuck with a loser, too.
The teams were waiting for their sensei to show up, and Iruka took off. Shikamaru didn’t have long to wait, though he noticed that Sasuke was sitting, ignoring Sakura, and staring out the window. He let out a small laugh as his sensei showed up. He turned to face the man. He had a cigarette attached precariously to his lips. He was tall and broad and wearing standard jounin attire. His black hair and beard seemed to make him almost snuggly looking. Shikamaru almost smiled. His sensei was good looking, but more importantly, the first laugh he gave proved he would also be friendly.
Ino spoke up noticing the way Shikamaru was looking at their sensei. “I’d watch yourself, sensei. Shikamaru likes to play with guys that aren’t gay.”
Shikamaru sighed and shrugged. “Fucking troublesome woman.”
Asuma smirked. He could see a story just begging to be told, but he didn’t like the attitude the girl on this team had. He turned to her. “First of all, you don’t even know me yet. You can’t say that I’m straight. Secondly, I believe this team is off to a terrible start if you think the best way to become teammates is by tearing each other down. Thirdly, I’m your sensei Asuma. Let’s go have some BBQ and get to know each other better.”
Chouji’s face lit up at the mention of BBQ. Ino laughed. “It figures the fatass would want BBQ.”
Chouji’s face turned beet red and he started growling. Shikamaru grabbed his shoulder and whispered something in his ear. Chouji somehow got a hold of himself. Asuma watched this with curiosity.
Shikamaru, seething from Ino’s earlier comment, though he hardly ever seethed, was pushed over the edge by her insult to Chouji. He glared at her icily, in a move he had picked up from Sasuke. “Don’t ever call Chouji fat. If I’m not around to save you, you will be broken before you hit the floor. Keep your nose out of our business. And just so you know, you’re too big a bitch for Sasuke to like you.”
Shikamaru turned on his heels, grabbing Chouji’s arm and dragging him with, as he headed out the door and toward the restaurant. Asuma shrugged, motioned Ino to follow, and headed out the door as well. He sighed, seeing Shikamaru start to relax as he and Chouji strolled casually toward the food and talked to each other easily. It was obvious the two had been friends for quite some time.
***************
Sasuke sighed as his name was called after Sakura’s. He knew she was going to be spending more time trying to get his attention and less time helping their team. He stared out the window, smiling softly as Shikamaru’s name was called. The time hadn’t done much to fix their friendship yet, but it had definitely taken the sting off the hurt. Almost a month had passed since he saw Shikamaru at the BBQ, and he almost felt like he was ready to try talking to Shikamaru again.
He heard Ino’s voice, shill as hell, saying, “Shikamaru likes to play with guys that aren’t gay.” He ground his teeth together, and felt Naruto’s comforting ‘accidental’ brush of his hand. They had been growing closer, but still had to maintain Sasuke’s outward appearance that he was straight. There was just too much to worry about when he finally came out, and he wasn’t ready yet. He could hear Sakura’s chaffing laughter in the background, and bit his tongue, trying to keep staring out the window without turning to glare at her.
He continued to eavesdrop on the conversation, slightly glad for the way their new sensei spoke to Ino. She really was a bitch. Sasuke tensed as he heard Ino call Chouji fat, which he’d seen only once before, when Naruto did so. There was definitely some pain handed to Naruto that day. When nothing happened he chanced a glimpse over his shoulder only to see his normally composed and lazy ex with his fists clenched and his stance rigid. His eyes were dangerously focused on Ino. He was so shocked by the look that he only registered the end of what Shikamaru had been saying. He laughed internally. Without actually outing Sasuke and exposing their relationship, Shikamaru had dashed Ino’s hopes of being with Sasuke. Though it was likely that Ino would bounce right back almost immediately.
Sasuke turned his attention back out the window as Team 8 left. He, Sakura, and Naruto were the only ones left in the classroom. It was well over half an hour before a slightly flustered man with grey hair poofed into the room. “Yo.”
Sasuke sighed. “Hn.”
Sakura and Naruto both laughed. They couldn’t help it. Naruto especially thought it was the funniest thing he’d heard in a while. “So, why this team?” He’d been dying to know why the three of them were put together.
Kakashi smiled. “I’m Kakashi. If you can pass my first test, I’ll answer your questions.” He motioned for the team to follow him and jumped out the window. Sasuke smirked. This was going to be a welcome distraction. He jumped out behind Kakashi, smiling just a little when he saw they were headed toward the training grounds.
*********************
Iruka sighed. He was sad to see his students graduating, but he was sad every time a class graduated. He looked over the assembled teams one last time. He knew they would eventually work out, though some, especially team 7 and 8, would most likely take some time to adjust to each other.
He stood in the front of the class and began reading off names, not really thinking too hard. He knew if he thought about the words he was saying, his heart would feel sad. Still, watching the reactions as he read off the teams, he couldn’t help but notice the way Shikamaru watched Sasuke. He’d heard rumors, but he knew Shikamaru well enough to know there couldn’t really be much truth behind them. He heard Ino growl when he called out her team.
He poofed out of the room to the teacher’s lounge. The other teachers went home after team assignments were made. He allowed the few tears that always fell as a class graduated to decorate his cheeks. He sniffled and paused as he felt a familiar chakra enter the room. He sighed, half-heartedly. “’Kashi, you’re supposed to be meeting your students.”
Kakashi smiled and wrapped his arms around the teacher’s waist from behind. “I just wanted to make sure you were all right first, ‘Ruka.” He nuzzled Iruka’s neck, dropping soft kisses in the crook.
Iruka smiled and wrapped his arms backwards, around Kakashi’s neck. “I’m fine.” He giggled as Kakashi kissed up and down his neck. “Go to your team.” He slapped half-heartedly at his lover’s hands that were beginning to wander. Iruka turned around in Kakashi’s arms so he was facing the man. He gave Kakashi his best teacher glare, earning a chuckle in response. “Kakashi, seriously! You have a team to meet.”
Kakashi smirked and ran his hands down to Iruka’s ass giving it a quick squeeze. “I want you to tell me about them, first.” He pulled his mask down just a bit and captured Iruka’s lips in a bruising kiss.
As Iruka broke the kiss he laughed. “All right, ‘Kashi,” he sat down on the couch and yanked Kakashi down beside him. “You’ve got Haruno Sakura. She is really smart, but she’s completely lacking in confidence. There’s Uzumaki Naruto. Aside from what everyone knows about him, Naruto is extremely important to me. He isn’t the most talented and his grades were severely lacking, but he has an enormous potential just waiting to be tapped.” Kakashi nodded. He knew the soft spot in Iruka’s heart where Naruto was concerned. “Last is Uchiha Sasuke. He’s extremely talented; probably as much, or more so, than Itachi, if anyone would take the time to look at him. He’s been moody the last few weeks, though I think I may have determined the reason why.”
Kakashi smiled as moved to straddle his chuunin. “What reason is that?” He asked softly as he ground his crotch against Iruka’s.
Iruka gasped, moaned, and sighed at the same time. “I think he got out of a relationship recently, but I’m also pretty sure he’s never said he’s gay.”
Kakashi smirked and leaned in nibbling on Iruka’s earlobe. “And just who do you think this relationship was with?”
Iruka shuddered as Kakashi’s warm breath flowed over his ears and neck. “N-nara Shikamaru oh, mm.” Iruka’s train of thought turned into incoherent sounds as Kakashi ran his hand up Iruka’s shirt while capturing the chuunin’s delectable lips in another heated kiss.
After nearly five minutes, Iruka pushed Kakashi off his body. “No, Kakashi! You have a team to get to.” Iruka was panting, trying to catch his breath after an amazing kiss. He loved that he and Kakashi had finally hooked up. It had taken over two years of subtle hinting on Iruka’s part and then one drunken night where Iruka finally just blurted his feelings out to Kakashi before Kakashi realized what Iruka was offering. Once the offer was made, Kakashi couldn’t refuse. There wasn’t a man or woman who didn’t think of Iruka as one of the best catches in the village. They had been together for almost six months now.
Kakashi smiled. “I’ll go teach my team if you promise to move in with me this weekend.” It wasn’t really an ultimatum, but Iruka didn’t need to know that.
Iruka smirked. He pressed his body flush to Kakashi, grinding up and down against Kakashi’s strong frame. Iruka put his lips up to Kakashi’s ear, before whispering, “I’d like that ‘Kashi-kun.” He grabbed Kakashi’s neck with his lips and sucked strongly enough to work his boyfriend up, but not so strongly as to leave a hickey. He pushed Kakashi away. “Now! Genin team waiting for you.”
Kakashi sighed as Iruka poofed away, leaving him no choice but to find out what his brats were up to. If Iruka hadn’t asked him especially to watch over Naruto, he would have turned down a genin team. It just seemed like a lot of hassle and he didn’t like kids, even if these were almost adults. He readjusted his mask before disappearing and reappearing in front of his time. “Yo.”
******************
Asuma smiled as he watched his team. Chouji, it seemed, really enjoyed his food; not that he expected anything different from an Akamichi. Shikamaru seemed not to have any drive what-so-ever. He was leaned back in the booth, eyes shut. It almost looked like he was sleeping. After the near blowout earlier, it seemed the ponytailed boy decided to just shut the world out. It was not entirely unexpected from the son of Nara Shikaku. Yamanaka Ino was another story. She seemed hell bent on getting herself kicked off the team. Since they arrived she had been making snappy comments and giving bitchy looks to the other two. He sighed. “All right, now that we’re full, it’s time to talk. We’ll start with Ino. What do you hope to get out of this team and our time together?”
Ino smirked. “I want to be strong enough that Sasuke-kun will pick me for his wife and then we’ll live in a nice house and have kids.” Shikamaru snorted, but said nothing. Ino glared at him. “Look, just because you molested him once doesn’t mean you know anything about Sasuke-kun.”
Asuma sighed. “All right. Ino, I expect you to come up with a reason to be a ninja that doesn’t involve a boy before the day is over.” He turned toward Chouji. “What about you, Akamichi?”
Chouji smiled. “We Akamichi have a strong ninja tradition to uphold. I want to be able to stand next to my father on the battlefield and not be a disappointment. I want to be able to protect my friends and family.”
Asuma nodded. “That’s a good answer.” He turned toward the lazy looking Nara. “Shikamaru, what do you want out of this team?”
Shikamaru sighed before cracking just one eye. “I could lie and tell you just about everything Chouji told you. The only thing I’d mean is the protecting friends and family. I don’t much care for my own well-being, but I want to make sure those I care about are safe. I don’t care for Ino, but now that she’s part of my team, I want to do what I can to ensure she comes back from missions alive.”
Ino snorted at Shikamaru’s statement. “Yeah, you don’t care about me. Unless you think somehow it will get you Sasuke, which it won’t.”
Shikamaru sighed and closed his eyes again, a scowl affixing itself to his face. “Troublesome, bitch.”
Asuma sighed. “We have to clear up this argument or you won’t ever work together well as a team.”
Shikamaru sighed. “There’s a rumor that I raped one of the guys in our class, but it isn’t true. However, he’s an extremely popular boy and I’m not, so of course, I must be the liar. Also, Ino and Sakura both think they have a shot with said boy. That’s the real reason she’s pissed. There’s the smallest chance it might not be one of them he picks.”
Ino snorted. “It’s not a lie. Naruto saw you sucking his cock and then running away with your tail between your legs. You wouldn’t have done that if you weren’t a coward and a rapist.”
Asuma held his hand up. “Chouji and Ino, you’re free for the day. Meet tomorrow at 8 AM near the memorial stone.” Chouji and Ino nodded and stood up, walking out of the restaurant and toward their respective homes. Asuma sighed and rubbed his temple, pulling out a new cigarette. “You want to talk a walk, Shikamaru?”
Shikamaru nodded. At least it wasn’t an immediate dismissal, which he had been half expecting. As Asuma and Shikmaru walked through the woods surrounding the village, Asuma noticed Shikamaru lost in thought. He stopped near a small spring and sighed. “Let’s talk about it.”
Shikamaru nodded. He laid down near the edge and trailed his hand in the water. “What do you want to know?”
Asuma smiled softly. He recognized the signs of heartbreak. It had happened to him enough times. “Maybe why it is Ino seems to think you raped Sasuke?”
Shikamaru sighed. He dropped his head to the ground and spoke softly, but he told his new sensei the entire story about his relationship with Sasuke. “I am glad we are getting closer to being friends again, but I hate that he still hasn’t been able to tell anyone other than Naruto that we were together.”
Asuma nodded. “Just so you know I want you to try to work with Ino. If push comes to shove though, I’d keep you and trade her to another team any day.” Shikamaru smiled. He was going to like this sensei. Asuma shrugged. “You want a smoke?” Shikamaru shook his head. He looked back into the water and let a few tears fall. Asuma smiled softly. Yes, heartbreak was something awful.
