I own nothing of Naruto. Leave me alone. OMG how did no one notice the skip from third to fifth chapter?! This is the real forth chapter, the fifth is now really the fifth!Koiuta, Love Song
Fourth Day
She’d been counting the days since she arrived in the Aburame clan home, though not so much for the clan as for the expulsion of the Genin who attacked her, and the punishment of her sensei. Oddly enough her ex-teammates weren’t part of the assault team, either out of fear or that they were both simply too injured. Maybe they knew her well enough to assume that she could escape by herself, or that she would be saved.
In any case, she headed for the Konohagakure entrance early in the morning, wearing her typical clothes that actually hadn’t been torn beyond recognition – some of the women of the clan who weren’t ninja had sewn it up for her exactly how it was. She wasn’t sure if those women had bugs living inside of them or not, but either way it didn’t really matter.
Explaining what she was up to for the guards granted her access to stand upon the gates and wait. As the delinquent Genin were marched out of the village ahead of their group, they all saw Tasha standing up there. She waved at them as they left with no warmth in her eyes, her expression, or her motions. Symbolically, she was waving goodbye to the previous seventeen years of her life.
Her sensei left with the rest of the group, including her injured-but-walking old teammates. She honestly regretted the bad relationship she had with the boys, as she could have easily been friends with them. But then, if she had made nice with them, would she be able to throw away life in the Earth country and live here instead?
Once they were gone and out of sight, she jumped down and whistled as she headed back to her current residence. She ran into several Konoha ninja over the past few days and began remembering their names. They mentioned others in a few talks who Tasha had never met, such as a Hyuuga named Neji who was said to have joined ANBU. Tasha knew about their Byakuugan eyes to an extent, and from her talks with Hinata, got to understand it a bit more.
Leading her to think that the ANBU one who stated that his eyes don’t lie could have been Neji. At the very least, she knew of no other Hyuuga as of yet who is a ninja besides Hinata and Hanabi. Fighters, maybe, but not official ninja.
She ran into Shino at least once each day, which didn’t surprise her at all. It surprised her a little, though, when he showed up after her bath the previous night on the way back to her room. Again, with her hair down, making her think that either that hallway was a busy one, or he just liked catching her with her hair in a damp stream down her back.
Thinking about him, he’d said just that night that he wanted to talk to her for a little while today. She essentially had nothing to do until she was officially a Konoha ninja, so she figured she’d wait around for him to show up. She wasn’t sure what he wanted to talk about, but from what she knew of his personality so far, it wouldn’t be something trivial.
An energetic man she’d met by the name of Naruto warned her to never catch Shino laughing, which she didn’t see as a possibility. If he hadn’t suggested it, she would have thought that Shino didn’t have a sense of humor, but Naruto wouldn’t have warned her if he hadn’t seen something.
She’d spent a little time talking to Kiba, and at Akamaru’s continual request, she gave in and played a song for the pup. Though Akamaru was rather giant as far as dogs go, she still saw him as a kind of puppy from the way he tended to act. That is, except for when Kiba showed up riding on Akamaru’s back.
Akamaru had listened intently to the song she played on her yokobue, as well as Kiba for that matter. The dog eventually rubbed his head on her thigh in appreciation, to which she paused the song to scratch him a little. Luckily, Kiba hadn’t done anything so animalistic, opting instead to remark on how soothingly she played.
She was surprised enough at his comment that she excused herself, leaving before her cheeks had a chance to darken. She’d never played her yokobue for anyone before, making it more than a little embarrassing that someone had commented on it. There was that tune the first day she was here, but she hardly considered that a song or that she was playing for someone.
Now fully bored of just walking around, she headed for the Konoha training grounds once more. Being here, she drew her katana and practiced more. If the Hokage were going to accept her, she might just have to show some superior abilities. But being overly powerful might hurt her cause, as it could make the other Genin here jealous of her. So essentially, she had to be very careful and cautious.
And after an hour of this training, while she was practicing her Wind Trail jutsu, Shino simply appeared. She didn’t notice him coming at all, didn’t feel his presence, and immediately cut off her chakra, ending the attack. She was panting a little from how intensely she’d been training, and it was just about time for a break anyway. She waved a “hello” at him and then moved aside, sitting in the shade of a tree.
Shino stood in front of her for a few moments before taking a seat beside her. She noticed immediately – and with a little satisfaction – that he was sitting a tiny bit closer than propriety allowed. She mentally smirked while putting on a face of business and asking him what it was he wanted to talk about.
He brought up the subject of her transfer to Konoha, and explained that there was actually paperwork for this kind of thing. It needed her signature along with information about her, to be put on record as an official Leaf ninja. Then he explained that once she was a ninja, after her first paid mission, she was to find a place within the village to live permanently. After that, she would be reentered into the Chuunin Exam if she failed this round, and from there, possibly raised to Jounin level.
She was getting a little tired of talking business with him, even if her expression projected it. Still, this was hardly the time or place to talk about anything else, so when he got up to leave, she only stopped him to ask if they could talk again later tonight.
Maybe he was nervous, a little uncomfortable, or thought she was hinting at something she wasn’t, but he didn’t agree nor disagree. She took that as a positive, since she just knew he would turn her down if he wanted to.
She realized, after he was gone, that they hadn’t decided upon a time. Just as she was mulling that over in her head, a few Genin showed up and asked to use the training grounds. She nodded and bowed out, letting them take over the training logs and instead returning to the Aburame clan home. She had a small amount of money saved up from a job she did two days ago that paid cash by the hour, and decided to go out and spend some of it.
As she browsed this shop and that, she noted a clothing shop and stepped up to it. In the window was a female mannequin wearing the most beautiful kimono she had ever seen, and the woman in her screamed to get it immediately. However, she didn’t have nearly that much money -- it cost almost eight thousand. Dark blue silk was its base, the front of it and left sleeve covered in vines with sakura blossoms on it, those same flowers falling down the left sleeve at the hem. The right sleeve showed pink petals, falling towards the bottom of the sleeve, and all hems were golden. She opted for staring at it for a long time, then going inside to look at whatever else they had.
An hour and a half later and she was being fitted for her sizes by an elderly woman who seemed to be almost enchanted by Tasha’s beauty. In fact, the woman commented that it wasn’t just her face or body, but her voice and even the way she held herself – like a princess from a fairy tale. It made Tasha smile as that was the very first beauty compliment she’d ever gotten that she could remember, and chatted happily to the old woman as she was measured for the kimono she’d just bought.
It was silky looking, dark blue, and shimmered gold along part of the hem, on her left shoulder, and her right lower sleeve. The shimmers started faint but grew thicker, making you wonder if it was gold on blue or blue on gold, fitted with a pure white obi that came with a pendant which latched onto the obi. When Tasha inquired about the price and swore it should be more money than it is, the old woman laughed.
“A princess needs a fine kimono,” she chuckled, her eyes sparkling. “You have a discount – as long as you come back again and purchase that kimono in the window you were staring at for so long.”
“I wanted to ask,” Tasha began, “why that kimono is so much more lovely than the rest of the fabrics in here.”
“Ah, that was the last of that particular design,” the old woman replied. “About two years ago, an enchantingly beautiful young woman and picked it for her very first kimono, for a party she was attending. I made one duplicate of it, and that is what you see in the window.”
Tasha couldn’t help her grin, the kimono and obi folded and in a parcel in her arms. “I will be sure to return as soon as I have enough money to get it, Obaa-chan.”
“My name is Yume,” the old woman corrected, “but I believe that name is better suited to you, princess.”
Tasha blushed a little and bowed out, returning to Aburame’s home once more with a very happy demeanor. She placed the kimono on her bed and grabbed a robe, deciding to bathe early today, and maybe styling her hair a little differently to match the kimono she just bought. She wanted to wear the kimono and style her hair beautifully, if only to make Shino go breathless.
It might just be the imagination of a romancist that she was even thinking of dressing up nice for him and trying to steal his breath, but it was a nice image nonetheless. She would love to make any man gasp in appreciation of her beauty, but Shino would be something of a conquest. After all, he rarely showed any emotion, let alone lust.
But if it was just a conquest. . . why was her heart giddy whenever she thought of it, and why was she going to extremes just to talk with him? What was she going to say when he shows up? When is he going to show up?
A quiet talk suddenly became very complicated, and she was thankful that she was on her way to the bath once more, where she could relax in the waters and try to figure things out. The other women there spoke to her and asked about her day, and her plans for the future. She mentioned that she wasn’t going to be here much longer, and to her surprise, the ladies looked disappointed.
Then they asked about Shino, and Tasha – about to dunk her hair at the moment – lost her balance and splashed as she tried to keep from falling. She failed and went under completely, rising to the surface with a sputter. “Shino?” she repeated.
“Yes,” one of the ladies laughed.
“You know we generally keep our emotions hidden in this clan,” another lady explained, “so we can pick out emotions really easy – on others and ourselves.”
“Shino seems to really like you,” a third joined in.
“And you like him, too, don’t you?” the first woman finished.
Blushing badly, Tasha got up. “Thank you for sharing your home with me,” she said, climbing out, “but I think my personal life is all mine.” She felt rather exposed, not from being nude, but from being read through so easy.
“We were just curious,” one of them said.
“And Shino is such a great man, we want to see him happy,” another added.
“Surely, if I were as young as you, Tasha-san, I’d go for him!” one laughed.
A chorus of laughter followed in which Tasha continued to blush, and wondered seriously if the women were onto something. After a long moment, she felt herself start to smile, and wondered if it was how mysterious he was to her that made her like him so much.
She dried off a little, put on her robe, and waved goodbye at the women as she left for her room again. On the way back, she almost wandered down the wrong hallway, so lost in her thoughts. And then she got a shock as she turned down the corridor to her room and saw Shino leaning on the wall just beside her door.
As soon as they noticed each other, he stood up away from the wall and said, “So that’s where you were.”
She was on the verge of blushing. “You were waiting for me here?” she asked, surprised.
“Yes. I wouldn’t have if I’d known you were in the bath,” he assured her.
Was it just her imagination, or did he look a little red as well? “Well,” she started, “I should probably get dressed, shouldn’t I?” She waked up to her door and tried hard not to blush as she walked in and shut the door behind her. Once inside she sighed and leaned on the door.
That was. . . very odd.
Trying to act nonchalant while you know that you’re dressed in the same thing every man has a fantasy woman wearing wasn’t easy. Not only that, but the thought of now taking off the robe with him on the other side of her door was bothering her. Now that she was behind her door, her blush surfaced, and she knew all at once that she didn’t have the time to style her hair and put on her new kimono.
So she brushed her hair back, tied it, braided it, tied it off, and considered that part done. Now for the hard part: dressing. It took her a long moment to make her hands untie the robe, and longer to drop it off her shoulders. Then she tried to dress without hurrying, calming her heart with long breaths, until she was dressed in her usual after-battle haori and hakama.
It took her a minute to steady her hand, and then she opened her door again. She found Shino on the opposite wall, and he stood up straight about the same time she shut the door behind her. They both stood there for a while, making Tasha wonder when she became a preteen again.
Then at last, she said, “Where to?”
Shino glanced down the corridor that led outside. Good idea, she thought, and nodded confirmation. They both headed that way, and stayed perfectly silent, side by side, until they reached a treeless hill. Tasha stopped there and turned around, looking over the nighttime village. It looked very peaceful from way up here, with lights glittering and faint laughter reaching all the way up here.
“Do you like the village?” Shino asked, close to her.
She smiled. “It’s far better than where I was born and had to grow up,” she replied, turning to face him and finding that he was mere inches from her. She was faintly certain she saw him draw back his hand quickly, too, though she wasn’t sure what he was reaching for.
“Did you really want to talk?” he asked, surprising her a little.
Did he see right through her, too? “Yes, but the talking. . . is just the cake,” she explained, hoping he caught her referral to the phrase “icing on the cake.”
Whether or not he understood, he stepped back and turned partially, overlooking the landscaping around them. He eventually chose a spot and started towards it with a glance at her. She followed him, quietly, until he took a seat on a log that looked out of place in such an open hilltop. She sat next to him, deliberately brushing her leg against his as she went.
They were both highly aware of the motion, and on that note, they began a conversation. As usual, Shino kept his secrets tightly packed away, but he still had an opinion about everything. The talk ranged from Tasha’s possible next home to interesting things about Shino’s clan, to fashion to friends, and finally to Tasha’s love life.
She was surprised when he simply asked, “Do you have a boyfriend already?”
For some reason, she wanted to lie to him and say “yes,” but she shoved that out of her mind. “No, I don’t,” she told him. “What about you?”
He shook his head.
They fell into an awkward silence there, until Tasha laughed out loud. “I can’t believe this,” she said, dropping her head into her hands. “For the longest time, all I wanted was to be seen as beautiful and have a lover who appreciated it. And now that I have a whole new life, I can’t just go out and pick someone.” Smiling at him, she added, “It’s pretty crazy, isn’t it?”
He didn’t reply, making her wonder if she’d something horribly wrong just now. But then, with such a hidden face, it was hard to tell anything about him at all. His eyes weren’t visible in the least, making it impossible to know exactly what he was looking at.
And then she noticed where his hand was – holding the end of her hair, and lightly stroking it. It made her wonder if he had a thing for long hair, and she sat up straight, about willing to voice the question. But her chance to ask him about it vanished fairly quickly. . .
He told her, very suddenly, “Insanity is a point of view,” and then both his hands were on her, one on her cheek and the other on her neck. He leaned in closer to her and she smiled faintly, knowing she was blushing but happy just the same.
The kiss was a very simple touch of their lips, made all the better by his hands’ warmth on her skin. Not wanting to draw back made her lean on him, her arms lifting around his neck, and in return his hands slid down her middle and around to her back.
All in all, she chocked this up as a huge success in the story of her life.
