Naruto hated being the new guy in town. He was a friendly person and loved meeting new people, but there was always that awkward period when you first get into town where everyone either avoided you or didn’t mind their own business, and it was this transitional phase that Naruto found the hardest to deal with – that and the stares that usually accompanied it.
This time was no exception. He could feel eyes on him from every direction as he and the moving men unloaded his merchandise and equipment into the store he’d purchased from an old friend of the family after his mother had died. She’d been all he had after his dad had died on location in Laos, and to lose her to pneumonia was a hard blow. So he’d sold off their house, purchased the store with a connecting apartment, and moved away from a town full of memories that held happiness and despair.
Naruto hoped he could put the sadness behind him and move on. A new locale, a bigger business, and some new friends might help, but for now, the transitional phase and its wide-eyed stares were making his back twitch.
The moving men set the last piece of merchandise in place, and Naruto carried in the last box of his belongings. Thanking the men, Naruto watched them leave the store, staring at the bell atop the door as it jingled with their exit. He felt it might get on his nerves, but knowing he’d be in the back a lot, it would have to stay so that he knew when someone entered.
Turning his back to the door, Naruto took in the shop. He’d been here weeks before to look the place over, and it was shaping up to look just as he’d imagined. All that was left was to hang the display pictures on the wall and add decorations here and there, and the showroom would be all set to go. His workroom in the back would be another week or so to set up, and he still needed to get the apartment in order upstairs.
Just as he was about to move that way, the bell above the door chimed, and he whirled around to see who’d entered his shop. A woman stood tentatively in the doorway, the wind whipping her fall-colored plaid skirt and the ends of her long scarf. He was struck by the pink hair, but he automatically smiled and greeted the woman kindly.
“Hello. I’m afraid I’m not open for business yet.”
She smiled at him and walked further into the store, letting the door close behind her. “I figured, but I thought I’d introduce myself. Everyone in town was so surprised when Jiraiya closed shop and sold it, and we’ve all been waiting on pins and needles to meet you.”
Naruto lifted a brow in query. “To meet me?”
“Well, not you specifically, but whoever Jiraiya thought was good enough to sell to. A lot of people have been trying to buy this space from him since his wife left, but he never budged. And then, all of a sudden, he’s announcing that he’s leaving and selling the place. We were all a little shocked and curious.”
Naruto chuckled lightly. “That sounds like him. Ma and I have been telling him for years that he needed to chase after Tsunade, so I bet that’s where he’s gone.”
The woman looked a little confused for a second, and then her eyes widened in surprise as her cheeks pinked to match her hair.
“I’m so sorry! I just started talking without introducing myself! I’m Sakura. It’s nice to meet you.” Sakura stuck out her hand, and Naruto took it with a smile after wiping the dust off his hand onto his pants.
“Naruto. It’s nice to meet you, too.” He let her hand go and watched as she looked about her around the showroom.
“You’re a furniture seller, Naruto?”
“Hm, maker, more like. I’m a finish carpenter and cabinetmaker.”
Sakura walked up to a dining set and ran her fingers over the glossy mahogany wood surface, trailing down the side to lightly trace the intricate carving detail.
“It’s so pretty. You made this?”
“Yeah. The items in this showroom are mostly for display, though they are for sell. I mostly do specifically ordered items for my clientele.”
A high-pitched ring tone suddenly sliced the air, and Sakura frantically dug through her purse before producing a cell phone. She put it to her ear and smiled apologetically at Naruto.
“Yeah, I’m on my way. I stopped to look at some gorgeous furniture.” She winked at Naruto and he smiled back. He felt himself relaxing and realized that the awkward transitional phase might not last that long after all. Sakura hung up and walked toward the door.
“It was nice meeting you, Naruto. I’m late for a get together or I’d stay and chat more. Maybe we can hang out and I’ll show you around town some time?”
“That sounds great.” Sakura smiled and waved as she left, prompting Naruto to do the same. He watched out of the front windows as she walked down the sidewalk, stopped every now and then by someone who would gesture up to his store. She smiled and talked a moment with each one, and Naruto could only assume she was assuring them that he wasn’t a psycho-rapist or something.
The entire front wall of his shop was windows, and they provided a beautiful view of the street. Shops lined the opposite side, dotted with trees whose multi-colored leaves were both clinging to branches and strewn about the empty street. A few cars were parked along the curb, but for the most part, people walked up and down this particular street. It was a pretty, comforting sight.
As Sakura blended into the fall-scape, Naruto thought to himself that this might not have been a bad idea after all.
~*~
Naruto had now been in town for three weeks, and October was just beginning. His shop was open, and he had more customers than he’d originally anticipated. Sure, most of them just came in to look, but that was still him getting out of his workroom more often than he’d thought he would to go greet those that walked in.
He was sure Sakura had passed on the information about his trade, because everyone who stopped by said so. But that was fine. Word of mouth was his bread and butter. He’d gotten lucky, though, a week ago, when a representative of Hyuuga had stumbled upon his shop.
The man, Neji, had admired his craftsmanship and returned the next day with his formidable uncle, chairman of the family company, who had agreed that his work was excellent and commissioned Naruto’s skills for a hotel they were building in the next city over. Just a few pieces for the lobby and penthouses, but the details they wanted added up to a hefty paycheck, and Naruto was quite grateful for the opportunity. Sure, he had his parents’ life insurance to help in rough spots, but he was a firm believer in earning a living.
The Hyuuga were supposed to be delivering the first of the wood chosen today, so Naruto was on the sidewalk out front, sweeping the leaves that had accumulated along the walkway, waiting for the truck so he could instruct them to the back for the unloading.
He finished sweeping the leaves away from his shop entrance and looked down the street for any sign of the truck. Not seeing it, he turned the other direction and came up short when he was greeted by the sight of small twin boys, both wearing bulky coats that reached their knees and sharing one long scarf. They were just staring at him, one wide eyed and innocent, the other glaring and insolent. Naruto lifted a golden brow in question.
“Hi there, little men. What are you two doing out alone?”
They didn’t answer, just continued to stare at him. Their cheeks were still chubby with baby fat and pink from the slight nip of the wind. Their hair and eyes were both a deep black, and they had very pale skin.
“What are your names, fellas?”
They looked at each other really quickly from the corners of their eyes before lighting on Naruto again. The innocent one took a deep breath and answered, “We’re not a-s’pposed to talk to strangers.” The other hit him with a tiny balled fist without eyes leaving Naruto. It was strange, to say the least. Naruto felt like he was in a Stephen King novel. They were kinda creeping him out with the staring. But the glary one, he reminded Naruto of someone. Well, they both did, since they were twins, but the glary one especially. It was on the tip of his tongue.
The tiny glare got fiercer, and Naruto almost stepped back in spite of himself. Apparently size didn’t matter when it came to the eye of death. The glary one opened his mouth to say something, his voice even and almost cold.
“Why does he look only at you?”
“What?” Naruto was more than a little confused, but before he could press for more details, the boys grabbed hands and ran off down the street, dodging between people walking along the sidewalk. Naruto watched them go just to make sure they didn’t disappear before his eyes or something. The encounter was weird enough without it being freaky, too.
If only he’d known it would be the first of many, he would have avoided the sidewalk. Every day after that, the boys would return and stare at him, one wide-eyed, one glaring, and refused to talk. Though, the wide-eyed one, Naruto had gotten him to smile several times, and he looked more and more like he wanted to talk back, if it hadn’t been for his brother’s interference.
Despite the creepiness, Naruto was starting to enjoy seeing them every day. They were cute. And he felt that the more he saw them, the easier it would become to draw upon that elusive memory of why they were so familiar. If he didn’t know any better, he’d think they looked just like-
“Naruto!”
Naruto jerked out of his thought in time to watch the kids dash off like they did every day, but he was sure it hadn’t been one of the kids that has screamed his name. Looking around, he saw Sakura and Kiba walking up the sidewalk towards him.
Sakura, as promised, had shown him around town and introduced him to her friends, so he guessed they were now his friends. Kiba was an alright guy, though he could be quite loud sometimes and couldn’t really hold his liquor. Naruto liked him nonetheless.
“Were those the Uchiha orphans that just ran off?”
Naruto felt his stomach drop like a rock at the name off Kiba’s lips. He’d been leaning that way for a week, but to think… They had to be Itachi’s kids, because the other scenario…
Sakura smacked Kiba on the head. “That is a horrible thing to say, idiot. Their mother might be dead, but Sasuke is still very much alive.”
Naruto’s stomach didn’t drop any farther, but his heart might have stopped beating for all he knew. How that name of all names could just fall out of the sky and land on his head, he had no idea.
“Very much alive and very much not here,” Kiba returned.
“You know his schedule is very hectic. Itachi has to send the best he’s got on these business trips.”
“He shouldn’t have to fit them in his schedule, Sakura. They’re his children.”
“And he’s doing his best to provide for those children, which means he has to work.”
“They have more money than God. He does not have to work.”
Naruto wasn’t really listening to their argument, though he registered every word. He was still reeling from the bombshell. Sasuke, of all people, lived in this small town, and his children had some sort of interest in Naruto. Though, for the most part, Naruto felt it was a sinister kind of interest. At least from the little hellion.
“What are their names?” Naruto interrupted the two bickering in front of him.
“What?” Sakura looked at him in confusion. “Oh, Touya and Kei. Touya is the older twin. Their mother died shortly after they were born, so Sasuke took them in.”
“Took them in?” Naruto was confused. Weren’t they Sasuke’s kids?
“Sasuke’s the father, but they were never married, so the children stayed with the mother. Then she died, and Sasuke took them in instead of the mother’s family.”
“Knowing Uchiha, he would have taken the kids from her had she lived at some point. They need heirs.”
“Kiba, why do have to be so cynical? Sasuke loves those kids!”
“Yeah, yeah.”
Naruto ignored them once again, this time actually tuning them out as Sakura began a tirade on the certainly of Sasuke’s love for his children, and Itachi’s unyielding protection of his younger brother and nephews.
He looked down the street in the direction the boys always ran and floated back to one of his most painful and favorite memories.
Their goodbye kiss in the park, the rain soaking through their clothes and drowning them as they refused to separate their lips. Sasuke was going to college, and Naruto was going on location with his dad in Central Asia. They wouldn’t tie each other down with promises and maybes. It was a clean break, which was why Naruto was heartbroken, of course.
Every now and then he’d thought of Sasuke and wondered if the man was somewhere thinking of him, but he’d long ago learned to let the past go and the future come on, whatever it may be. But to think he was so close to Sasuke after all this time…
Naruto shook his head in resignation. That ship had probably sailed for good, and he’d rather keep his good memories untainted by rejection.
~*~
Naruto set the jigsaw down and wiped the sweat off his forehead with his arm. The Hyuuga had delivered all the wood, so now Naruto was getting down to business. The hotel was still in the planning stages, so he had a while to actually finish the commissioned pieces, but he wanted something to show Hyuuga next time he was in town to see if he liked the style Naruto had chosen to create.
He looked up on the wall at the clock. 6:47pm. He’d been so into his work that the day had slipped away. Flinging off his gloves and goggles, Naruto jogged to the showroom to lock the front door, ready to retire for the day. But he paused when he got there, spotting two tiny boys sharing a scarf sitting along the curb outside his shop. Quickly throwing open the door, Naruto ran to them.
“Oh, my God, are you kids alright? How long have you been out here? It’s freezing!” It was late October now, and the leaves had already fallen and blown away for the year. The two boys were shivering, their faces paler than usual as the blood veins constricted to reserve heat in their tiny, fragile bodies.
“Oh, God.” Naruto hurriedly grabbed them by their waists, hauling them inside the warm shop and up the stairs into his apartment. He sat them on the couch in his living room and wrapped them in the blanket slung across the back before rushing to the kitchen to get them something hot to drink. He didn’t think coffee was a good idea, but he did have milk and hot chocolate, so he set about making that quickly while he constantly talked to them from the kitchen, assuring them they’d be fine.
Once he had two mugs of hot chocolate ready, Naruto returned to the living room and kneeled down in front of the couch.
“Here you go. Be careful. They’re heavy and hot. Blow on it before taking a sip.” The boys nodded and did as they were told, grateful to be warm. The deathly paleness was receding, replaced by their normal tone, and they gradually stopped shivering.
Naruto sat back on his heels. “How long were you two out there?”
Touya and Kei looked at each other before looking back into their mugs. “You weren’t out there,” Touya mumbled.
“I’m sorry, but there are no more leaves to sweep. You didn’t have to wait for me.”
The boys shook their heads. “We weren’t waiting for you,” Touya mumbled again.
“We didn’t want to go home,” Kei added, his voice quiet and sad.
“Why not?” Naruto asked gently. “Did something bad happen at home?”
They nodded their heads. “Dad’s going away on a business trip.”
“He promised to take us trick or treating, but he lied!” Kei started crying into his drink.
“Hey, now, Kei, don’t cry. He didn’t lie. Something just came up.” Naruto stood and sat down on the couch next to Kei, putting his arm around both boys. “Your dad’s probably really sorry he can’t take you trick or treating, but maybe someone else can go with you.”
They shook their heads again. “Everyone’s going to Aunty Ino’s party. Dad doesn’t like parties, so he said he take us trick or treating.”
Putting aside the question of why he hadn’t been invited to Ino’s party – he was a friend of Sakura’s, after all – Naruto only took a moment to think about it before making the boys look up at him.
“How about I take you trick or treating? I’m not going to Aunty Ino’s party.”
Their eyes were wide with surprise and hope. “You’d take us?”
“Of course. We just need to make sure it’s okay with your dad.” Which Naruto was so not looking forward to at the same time that he couldn’t wait to see Sasuke at least one more time.
The hope kind of left their eyes at that, their minds probably awash with scenarios of Sasuke saying no. But Naruto, no matter their past, was sure Sasuke wouldn’t say no to something his kids wanted very badly.
“Come on. Finish your hot chocolate and I’ll take you home. We’ll ask your dad when we get there.” The boys nodded wordlessly and continued to drink. Naruto ran down to the shop and locked the door, flipped the open sign to closed, and turned out all the lights. He ran back up the stairs and to the living room, but the boys were no longer on the couch. The blanket had been folded neatly and laid across the cushions.
“Touya! Kei! Where’d you go?” Naruto nervously walked to the kitchen and found them on their tiptoes trying to place their cups in the sink. Letting out a small, relieved breath, Naruto bounded over and took the cups from their fingers, setting them down in the sink and patting the boys on their heads. “Good boys. Thanks for helping. You two ready to go?”
“Yes.”
“Yep!”
Naruto smiled and led them to the back door. He put on his jacket and grabbed his keys, stooping down to readjust the boys’ scarf before opening the door and ushering them down the back steps. The stairs led to an alley where his warehouse dock was located, along with his garage, and Naruto buckled the boys into the backseat of his hybrid.
“Alright, boys, where do you live?”
“Phillips Street, the big house on the left,” Kei supplied, and Naruto was grateful Sakura had included Phillips Street on the tour of the city. It was an out of the way place that he was sure he would have never found on his own.
“So what do you boys want to be for Halloween?”
“I want to be a ninja!” Kei cried enthusiastically.
“I want to be a doctor.” Touya didn’t sound as enthusiastic, and Naruto wasn’t quite sure if he was answering the question or proclaiming a profession.
“Well, that’s cool,” he said anyway. Who was he to judge? The things his mother had used to dress him up as would have sent any lesser man to therapy, he was sure. “Do you two have a bedtime or something that I need to be aware of, to get you back home that night? Well, I guess I could ask your dad when we get there.”
Kei continued to describe his costume as Naruto drove, but Touya was looking at him strangely. It wasn’t the intense glare of dislike from the previous days, but one that seemed to question Naruto’s game, which was odd since Naruto didn’t know of any game that he was playing.
It was only a ten minute drive from his shop to the Uchiha household, and Naruto thought it was too short a drive. He still didn’t know how he’d react to seeing Sasuke again. The boys unbuckled themselves and then hopped out of the car, racing up to the front door and banging nosily on the wood and glass door since they couldn’t reach the doorbell. Naruto followed hesitantly, his hands buried in his pockets. The door swung open to reveal a stocky maid, her eyes red from tears.
“Oh, my God! Touya! Kei! Where on earth have you been? Your father has been worried sick about you! You should have been home hours ago!” She fell down on her knees and hugged them to her. “Mr. Uchiha! Mr. Uchiha, the boys are home!”
“Touya! Kei!” a low voice yelled from inside the house. It was deeper, older, but Naruto immediately knew that it was Sasuke’s voice, and he suddenly had a hard time drawing breath. He stepped closer to the door, watching the grand staircase as a tall, lean shape descended. Touya and Kei stepped away from the maid and ran up the stairs to meet their father, who knelt awkwardly, one knee on a step, the other leg stretched down, to hold them.
“Where have you been? Do you know how worried I was when I got home and you weren’t here? You scared me half to death!” Sasuke repeated these words again and again as he touched them to make sure they were warm and uninjured. When he was finally convinced, Naruto watched as Sasuke pushed them back and stood, hands on his hips looking down at them.
“Now where were you?”
“We were with Naruto,” Kei answered hesitantly, not really knowing if he was in trouble or not.
Naruto saw Sasuke’s body tense at his name, and he was sure Sasuke remembered him just as well as Naruto remembered him. His hands fell to his sides, and Naruto’s heart began to pound as Sasuke slowly turned toward the door.
Their eyes met, and Sasuke’s widened in disbelief. Naruto smiled just a bit, an awkward smile, kind of hesitant, and lifted a hand out of his pocket to wave in Sasuke’s direction. When Sasuke made no move to wave back or even come off the stairs, Naruto cleared his throat and stepped inside the house, moving forward so the maid could close the door.
“They’ve, uh, been to see me every day for the past few weeks, just for a bit. But today I wasn’t outside and when I went to close the shop, I found them on the curb. They were freezing so I brought them into my apartment for something hot and brought them right home. I’m sorry for the trouble.”
Sasuke seemed to get himself under control and stared down at Naruto impassively. “No, I apologize for the trouble they seem to have caused you. Boys,” he turned to the twins, “Get in the bath now so you don’t catch a cold. Dinner will be ready in an hour.” The twins chorused a ‘yes’ and were led up the stairs by the maid. Sasuke returned his attention to Naruto and walked the rest of the way down the stairs.
“Thank you for looking after them.”
“It wasn’t a problem. They’re fun to be with.” Naruto paused for a moment, an awkward silence between them. “You raised them really well.”
Sasuke snorted. “Apparently not if they’re running away like this.”
Naruto laughed a bit. “Eh, they were just upset. They told me you’re going on a business trip and can’t take them trick or treating.”
Sasuke rolled his eyes and turned to the side, walking into what Naruto assumed was a sitting room. He could only think to follow, since standing in the doorway seemed a bit stupid.
“I apologized to them,” Sasuke said as he poured a drink from a crystal decanter.
“They’re young. Sometimes apologies aren’t what they’re looking for. But I told them I’d take them, if it’s okay with you.”
Sasuke paused in bringing the glass to his lips. “You want to take my kids trick or treating?”
Naruto shrugged. “It’s better than them not going and being mad at you, right?”
“Hn.” Sasuke smirked and took a drink. “Well, if you don’t mind, I and the boys appreciate your offer.”
“No problem. It’s no trouble at all for an old-” Naruto was going to say lover, but he didn’t know what would happen to the civil conversation they were having now if he did, so he amended quickly, “-friend.”
Sasuke’s eyes quickly dropped to the glass in his hand, and Naruto turned to look at the art along the walls. He hadn’t said it, but it was there, and now they were both embarrassed.
“It’s good to see you again, Naruto. I missed… our friendship.”
Naruto grinned without humor toward the wall. “Yeah, I missed that, too.”
The silence was broken by the sound of screams and running feet upstairs. Sasuke sat his glass down and moved toward the room entrance where Naruto was standing.
“Would you like to join us for dinner?”
Naruto thought about it a moment, but he wasn’t too comfortable with the idea. He smiled at Sasuke and declined, turning toward the door to take his leave. He told Sasuke to let the maid know he’d be back Sunday to take the boys trick or treating and quickly walked to his car, trying hard not to look up at the door to see if Sasuke was still there.
~*~
Naruto checked his rearview mirror, catching the boys sleeping in the backseat. They had been out trick or treating for several hours and were now exhausted. Naruto smiled when he saw the stethoscope around Kei’s neck and the ninja mask over Touya’s face. The boys had become interested in the other’s costume, so Naruto had had the pleasure of hauling around a doctor ninja and a ninja doctor all night, rather than just a ninja and a doctor.
Naruto pulled into the Uchiha driveway and turned off the car, getting out as quietly as he could so as not to wake the boys. As he was opening the back door, the front door of the house opened, and Sasuke walked down the steps to the car. Naruto was surprised to see him but said nothing so as not to wake Kei since he was in his arms and resting his head on Naruto’s shoulder.
Sasuke smirked at him and opened the other door, carefully extracting Touya from the seatbelt and letting him lay against his own shoulder as he quietly closed the door. Sasuke motioned up to the house, and Naruto followed after closing both the doors on his side of the car.
Sasuke was already halfway up the grand staircase by the time Naruto entered the front door, and he carefully but quickly followed. He was up the stairs in time to see what room Sasuke disappeared into and entered a few seconds behind. Sasuke was setting Touya down on the bed and began to undress him, and Naruto moved to do the same.
“What are you doing home?” Naruto whispered as he laid Kei down on the bed.
“Trip ended early. I thought I could get home in time to catch you three, but there was traffic in the city from early trick or treaters.”
The ninja outfit was hard to get off without waking Kei, and by the time he finally managed a little leeway, Sasuke had already tucked Touya in and was gently shoving Naruto out of the way. Naruto shrugged helplessly Sasuke’s way, and the man smirked as he waved him off. Naruto took that to mean that he’d meet him downstairs, so he ambled out into the hallway.
He was drawn away from the stairs, however, by light shining into the hallway from another bedroom. Peeking in, Naruto realized it was the master bedroom, and therefore must be Sasuke’s. He’d always been a curious kid, so when his thoughts urged him to take a quick look around, he didn’t stop to think twice about it.
Quietly slipping into the room, Naruto stood a little disappointed that it was extremely clean and hardly furnished. It definitely spoke to Sasuke’s aesthetic, but it lacked imagination. The curtains were a dull gray that matched the carpet, and the sheets on the large, four poster bed were cotton rather than silk, which Naruto had always thought suited Sasuke best.
The other furniture in the room consisted of a desk and computer chair, a dresser, and a small nightstand on each side of the bed. The one on the right had a lamp, alarm clock, book, and small picture frame on the surface. Naruto made his way over to the nightstand, curious about the photo. He wondered if it was a picture of Sasuke and the kids or of their mother and couldn’t help wanting to take a peek. But when he picked it up, he was shocked to his very core.
It was a picture of him and Sasuke, taken back in high school by a friend of theirs. Naruto was leaning against a tree with Sasuke in his arms. Neither was looking at the camera; Sasuke was looking down at the ground with a soft smirk on his face – his version of a smile back then – and Naruto was leaning his head down to whisper something in Sasuke’s ear. They hadn’t known someone was around; in fact, Sasuke had been embarrassed and angry when he’d found out. And yet, for him to have this picture, framed and by his bed after all these years even…
Touya’s words from their first encounter floated in his mind. Why does he look only at you?
“Is this what he meant?” Naruto asked himself quietly.
“I’d ask if anyone ever taught you it’s impolite to snoop, but knowing you as I do, I know you probably ignored them if they did.”
Naruto whirled around at Sasuke’s voice, the photo still in his hand. Sasuke saw it and turned his head away for a second before turning back to pierce Naruto with his stare.
“Can I ask what you are doing in my room?”
Naruto flinched and hurried to replace the framed photo and step away from the bed, wiping his suddenly sweaty palms on his jeans. “I’m sorry. I saw the light on, and I was curious. Ma always said I was too curious for my own good, and I guess she was right, but I took a look inside and realized it was your bedroom, and, I don’t know, I guess I just…” Naruto realized he was babbling and stopped to think about what he was actually trying to say. “I just… wanted to be in here.”
Sasuke raised one eyebrow and stared at Naruto incredulously. “You… wanted to be in my room?”
Naruto let out a short laugh and ran his hands through his hair. “God, that makes me sound like a stalker. I haven’t seen you in almost ten years, and I pull this kinda shit. I’m sorry. I’m sorry, Sasuke.” Naruto looked up to gauge Sasuke’s reaction.
“You haven’t answered the question, Naruto.”
The silence seemed loud as they stared at one another. Naruto shifted through his myriad feelings this encounter was producing, trying to find one that would form the words best for this situation. Both his mind and heart settled on an intense longing that he thought he’d gotten over years ago, and his eyes stared helplessly at Sasuke as he smiled a sad smile.
“Yeah,” he said lowly, almost a sigh. “Yeah, I wanted to be here,” he continued with more strength. “I’ve… I’ve always wanted to be here, in your room, with you. I never wanted to let you go back then. I was stupid to let you talk me into it, and here we are, just trying to, I don’t know, forget that we were ever together, and it hurts! It hurts to just… just… know you’re ten minutes from me, and I can’t do anything about it! Sasuke, I can’t… can’t…”
Naruto couldn’t find the words, but it didn’t matter because Sasuke was across the room and kissing him breathless, hands clenched in the front of Naruto’s shirt and dragging him deeper into the kiss. Sasuke broke the kiss and rested his head on Naruto’s shoulder as they both tried to catch their breaths.
“Sasuke?”
“Shh. You can. It can be like we never stopped. Just… stay here, in my room, with me.”
Naruto swallowed, unsure what was going on, but elated that Sasuke wanted him to stay.
“The boys?”
“They’ll understand.”
Naruto thought about the photo behind him and Touya’s cryptic question again. Why does he look only at you?
“Just tonight?”
“Always, you idiot.”
Well, Naruto could live with that. They had a few things to work out, of course, some re-getting to know you type things, but he could definitely live with that.
