Tsunade looked up from her desk as a whirlwind slammed open both large doors without so much as a "Hey old hag are you decent?!" She was about to launch into a tirade about the gaki's rudeness when he suddenly started babbling. Nothing uncommon for the little twirp, but what was unusual was his haunted gaze. Nothing ever had Uzumaki Naruto glancing about nervously. He usually took things head on so as to take them down as quickly as possible. ::This is unusual and I have a feeling it has something to do with one very recently uh...changed Uchiha...::
The jist of Naruto's tirade was "Can I leave to search for Jiraiya?". He wasn't aware that he was looking over his shoulder with every other word, worried that Sasuke would pop out of the shadows at any time. He wanted to get as far away from Konoha as soon as possible.
“ENOUGH!!” she bellowed after several impatient minutes of waiting for Naruto to calm down. when he froze, cowering in respect of her renowned temper, she calmed herself slightly and said very simply, “No.”
Silence... and then, “WHY THE HELL NOT?!”
“Sasuke is pardoned, the reason he is still within the village. Naruto, he's liasoned to your team for right now. We cannot completely trust him yet and it is best to have those who knew him best to guard him. You are strong and you have Kakashi to back you up should experience be needed... Your mission is simple. Find out what Forbidden Jutsus he's used on himself and figure out how to Release or Dispell them. We need to stop this madness before he really does take the path Orochimaru left open for him. Kakashi was able to find a pulse so there's still a chance to end it...” she almost seemed to be talking to herself now, her eyes unfocused slightly.
“Tsunade-baba, please, I...” Naruto rubbed at his face tiredly. He'd not gotten much sleep last night in the end. “I can't be around him... It's like being haunted...” he whispered with a small shudder. How many dreams had he had in the past three years that he had woken from in a cold sweat, the picture of Sasuke bloody and dead at his feet fresh in his mind. “and it sure as hell doesn't help that he admitted he's already dead...”
Tsunade stilled. Absolutely froze, her lips the only things to move as she whispered almost hoarsely, dreading the answer, “What do you mean he ... admitted he was dead?”
“He said something about being a living dead, an un-dead,” Naruto said slowly, trying to remember Sasuke's exact words. “I'm not sure what he meant but he can move wicked fast now. He crossed a room in less time than it takes to blink...” He shuddered again. “He bled when I stabbed him in the liver, but his blood was real sluggish and the hole healed in seconds... Completely healed...”
“He can't be dead Naruto. Don't be a complete dolt! If he were dead he wouldn't be walking about and talking to us. In fact you'll probably find him waiting for you with your teammate and sensei...” she scoffed at the blond and then ordered him to get out so she could finish her work. But something kept nagging her about Naruto's words, his explanation was reminding her of something from her younger days, when she had traveled even more than she had just before becoming Hokage. She just couldn't put her finger on it.
Ignoring her order to leave Naruto bent over her desk so that she couldn't ignore him. "Then how did he survive a kunai in the liver...?! I had my hand in his gut for a good ten, fifteen minutes and it did nothing!"
She started, having expected him to leave immediately as she lost herself in her thoughts. Blinking she answered warily, unsure as to whether saying this to so rash a young Chuunin was a good idea or not, “He spent several months with Orochimaru. who knows what terrible things he learned...” ::Ten to fifteen minutes! That's impossible... Orochimaru what did you teach this poor mentally unstable boy you bastard?!?!... Or was it Orochimaru's doing at all....?::
“His LIVER, old hag!!” Naruto's nervousness had disappeared in his determination to get Tsunade to believe him. “You're the healer-nin, you know better than I do what that means! No one can be stabbed in the liver and not die without immediate action!”
Tsunade's face started to pale a little bit, but she forced her lips not to quiver. Something in her stomach had gone cold and was getting colder with every word from the boy. “You don't know what you're saying -…” she tried again, though the words fell entirely flat of her usual authoritative tone. ::Why do I feel this kind of dread.... when it has to be simply a Forbidden Jutsu... though really there isn't anything simple about that...::
Naruto's eyes narrowed as he glared at her. If there was one thing he hated more than losing a fight, it was not being believed when he told the truth. “Fine, don't believe me. But that's what he said, and that's what happened.”
To hell with her permission, Naruto was going to leave and he was going to leave now. Storming out of her office he headed straight for his apartment where his backpack was already prepared and waiting for him. Moments later he was flying through the forest to one of the Frog Hermit's usual haunts. He would look for Jiraiya and beg more training out of him. Anything to get away from Konoha... and Sasuke.
Many hours later Kakashi requested an audience with Tsunade.
“Have you seen Naruto?” he asked her, noticing that she looked very worried and a little pale. “He never showed up for the mission we had today. And Sasuke is still proving difficult to find before sunset.”
The old woman looked up and then stood suddenly getting right in Kakashi's face leaning over her desk, seemingly unaware that her ample bosom appeared ready to spill from her worry-rumpled clothing at any moment. “What did you just say?” she snapped, unduly snippy but for that she didn't like the answer to the plaguing question her mind had just suddenly supplied.
“Naruto's gone, his pack is missing from his apartment, and I still can't seem to find Sasuke until after the sun has set.” Kakashi was very worried himself, though he hid it well. It never sat well with him when his students made it hard for him to keep tabs on them.
“That brat probably ignored my orders and ran away to Jiraiya rather than face his troubles....” Tsunade's knees wobbled and she sat down heavily even as she began to give orders. “The sun will set in a very short time... I want Sasuke found and brought to the training field with the three logs immediately.” They were orders with all the power of one very unsettled Hokage behind them.
“Understood. Will you be meeting us there?”
Tsunade's grim expression was anything but reassuring or agreeable though she said, “Oh yes...”
Kakashi nodded, but he still wasn't ready to leave. “Tsunade-sama, do you have any idea why Sasuke and Naruto are acting so strange around each other? It's not like Naruto at all to run away...” Some of his worry crept through his lazy exterior.
“These kinds of things repair themselves in time, Kakashi. Don't worry about their behavior towards each other, over each other, or around each other. Right now... I gave you an order. This can not wait...”
Tsunade looked as though she had collected herself once more. There was color in her cheeks once more and she was slowly standing, her eyes as grim as her demeanor now.
The Jounin nodded again and then was gone. He would enlist Sakura's help in tracking Sasuke down once the sun had set.
