Chapter Five
An eye for an eye…

“Where did you find it?” Iruka’s voice was surprisingly calm as he addressed the Hokage sitting across the room from him and he held the bloody headband in his hands. He was through crying, now he was just angry, he could feel a cold fury filling him, coursing through him and his grip tightened on the headband.

“ It was brought back by the rest of the team,” The Hokage whispered, he could tell Iruka was more angry now that he was upset and he was cautious with his words. “Another member of the team was injured, Kakashi went back for him…the wounded man came back but Kakashi didn’t.”

Iruka bite his lip, Kakashi had gone back when he could have just left and saved himself, but no,
‘I will never let my comrades die.’ The white haired jonin's words echoed in his ears and the young chunin ground his teeth together, trying to keep his rage at bay.” Ok thank you Hokage-sama.” He stood up, a prominent, but not rude gesture to leave and he gave a faint smile to the Hokage sitting in front of him.

The Hokage got the message and he nodded, making his way to the door. “ Iruka, if you need anything…don't hesitate to ask.” He whispered and he left, a slight hesitation in his step. He was worried about leaving Iruka all alone; the fact that the young dolphin wasn’t crying unnerved him and he sighed heavily, he would have people watch out for the young dolphin, just for a few days, just to be sure he would be all right.

Iruka stared at the door for a while, listening as the Hokage left, his footsteps hesitant at first, then becoming steadier before they faded and he slouched against the door. He slid to the floor, vision blurring with tears and he drew his knees up to his chest. He said he wouldn’t cry, he swore he was done, but as he sat there the tears leaked out of his eyes unchecked and he buried his face into his arms, trying to swallow back the hurt but it was burying him and he gave over to it, drowning in his sorrow.

Night had fallen by the time Iruka got the strength to get up and he made himself eat something. He had already made the decision to leave, to…hunt and he smiled to himself as he downed his third cup of coffee. He went to this room and after gently laying the bloody headband on his night table, he silently dressed. He was sure to dress dark and in clothes he could move in. Finally he was satisfied and after redoing his ponytail he tied on Kakashi's headband. (AN: Ewwwww what a way to show true love!) He glanced in the mirror and nodded to himself reassuringly before he jumped out his window.

The night was cool and crisp as it rushed by him. Iruka jumped from roof to roof, careful to land with the ease and silence the shinobi gift bestowed upon him. He hadn’t moved like this in awhile but his body remembered and his movements were becoming fluid. He could jump from roof to roof now without pauses and he finally came to a stop on a familiar roof. He crouched quietly, catching his breath for a moment before looking for an open window, there were none but he made short work of one of the locked ones and he swung through, landing with grace onto the soft carpet floor.

He stood for a moment, looking around in the dark and he closed his eyes as he breathed in deeply. He could still faintly smell the sweet scent of Kakashi and he opened his eyes, blinking away tears before heading for the bedroom. He walked silently down the hall all nerves stretched to the breaking point even though there was not anyone else in the quiet house and he came to a stop in front of Kakashi’s bedroom door, where the carpet ended and wood floor began.

A blast of cold air hit him and he shivered quickly making his way over to where the open window allowed the night air to dance in. ‘ I must have missed a window…’ he thought ‘ Kakashi must have forgotten to close it…or never got the chance to…’ he swallowed back the sorrow that threatened to engulf him and he quickly closed the window. He smiled slightly as he looked around the room; the bed was slightly mussed with half the sheets on the floor and the other half on the bed. There were various clothes on the floor and on the bookshelf by the far wall, was Kakashi's precious collection of Icha Icha Paradise.

He was tempted to take a book down and see exactly what had the Jonin so captivated by it, what made him never want to leave them. He sighed as he noticed a book was missing and he abandoned the bookshelf for the bed. He sat on the edge gingerly before finally allowing himself to fall back amongst the pillows and blankets. He buried is face into the pillows and pulled the sheets over him. Almost immediately the scent of Kakashi filled his nose and mouth, pleasantly suffocating him. He felt safe, as if Kakashi was lying next to him with his strong protective arms wrapped around him and he allowed himself to drift into sleep.

Iruka woke suddenly, lying there quietly and his breath was coming in quickly as he looked around for the cause of his sudden awakening. Everything was quiet and he rolled out of bed reluctantly. He got up and walked to the open window staring you at the coming dawn, ‘ wait…open window?’ he leaned against the window frame and sighed ‘ its kinda cold, must have been what woke me, the window opened.’ He went ahead and left the window open; turning to the closet, ‘ok enough screwing around.’

Iruka dug through the closet, carelessly tossing clothes to the floor and hunting for Kakashi's ANBU weapons and gear. He wasn’t stupid, he knew the Jonin had once been an ANBU assassin, he had seee tae tattoo when they slept together and he also knew all that the former assassin had kept all his gear. He didn’t know where he had kept it but he knew it was here and when he didn’t find them in the closet, he began searching under the bed.

He sat back on his heels when search there had failed, he knew the former assassin had kept his gear now were was it?! He paced the room hissing softly to himself and as he walked over a certain part of the floor he heard the soft echo of his footsteps. Only a trained shinobi would have heard the soft change and he got down on his knees and put his ear to the floor, tapping lightly and excitement coursed through him when he head the faint echo again. He quickly traced the outline of the board and he dug his nails around the edges, trying to wrench it loose. After a few moments of struggling he sat back and pulled out a kunai. He wriggled it between the boards and using it like a lever he managed to lift up one corner.

He sighed in success as the board broke free and there lay Kakashi’s ANBU weapons and his uniform. He smiled and gently lifted the weapons, placing them with care next to him before reaching in for the uniform. He examined the weapons, being sure there were no chips in the blades of the swords and that they were cleaned. He nodded in approval as everything seemed to be in top shape and he laid the various things on the bed. He would wait for nigh to fall again before leaving on his… “mission” and he turned to the shower.

The day went by slowly and languidly. There wasn’t much to eat seeing as everything was expired, but it didn’t really matter because he wasn’t hungry anyways. He slept most of the day, lying back in Kakashi's bed made him feel calm and relaxed, it made him take his mind off the coming events, but when the night fell he was forced to think of what the next step was.

He rolled out of bed again and quietly dressed in Kakashi's uniform. The clothes were slightly big on him but he didn’t mind, it gave him more room to move in and he strapped the weapons to his waist. The swords felt oddly comforting as they lay on his hip and he tightened Kakashi’s headband around his forehead. This would be a night to remember he would be sure of it and he pulled his collar up around his nose and mouth, mimicking his lover’s look. He glanced in the mirror and was slightly startled at his look, before jumping out of the open window.

Iruka’s footfalls were light and quick as he ran through the streets of Konohagakure, pausing occasionally to listen to the soft whisper of the wind. He stopped in front of the Hokage's place and quietly slipped inside. He slid down the halls silently and he found the room he was looking for. There laying on the Hokage desk was the names of the people who were on Kakashi's team. He quickly skimmed through it and found the name he was looking for, the man who Kakashi had gone bfor.for. A cold rage filled him than it dissipated as he head a noise behind him and he turned quickly, his breath catching as he came foace to face with the Hokage.

“ Iruka? What are you doing here?” The Hokage whispered and he looked from the scrolls on his desk to Iruka's determined posture.

“ Nothing Hokage-sama.” Iruka whispered and he took an unconscious step back. He turned to leave and he was surprised when the Hokage did not try to stop him.

“Don’t get your self killed Iruka” The Hokage whispered to Iruka's retreating back and he hoped that the man didn’t end up joining his lover.

Iruka jumped from roof to roof and he finally cam a s a stop in front of a quiet house. He stood in front of it for a minute before quickly fiddling with the lock and silently opening the door. He silently walked through the house, pausing to glance in each door way and holding his breath when he saw the forms of people sleeping in once of the bedrooms. Finally he found the main room and he silently crept in, standing by the bed and reaching a calm hand down to cover the mans mouth. He tensed as the man jumped as fought with him a bit before he relaxed as the young chunin leaned down and whispered in his ear.

“ Quiet, you don't want to wake your friend.” He hissed in the mans ear as the man looked up into his face and his eyes widened.

“ Kakashi?” the man whimpered as Iruka's grip on him loosened and he stared at the man startled.

“ What? No, listen tell me who attacked you.” He hissed his eyes never leaving the young mans, he knew this man knew out of the whole team because he had been the one Kakashi had gone back for. He jerked him roughly “ Tell me who killed Kakashi!!” Iruka was on the verge oreamreaming but he bit back his rage as the man stuttered his answer.

“ I don't know who it was! There head bands had the sign of Kumo No Kuni, the Land of the Clouds, we hadn’t done anything yet, we were told there was fighting, to simply go and observe but when we got close they turned and attacked. Kakashi tried to maintain order over our confused and surprised team but it was chaos and the attacking fleet was larger than ours by about 5 to 1.” The man paused to take a breath “ We were out numbered easily and half of us ended up running leaving Kakashi and a few brave souls to fend off the team. I was wounded and taken so while Kakashi ordered the team to pull back he came back to get me. I was ok but he was hurt…I could tell he was hurt and I begged him to leave me but he wouldn’t hear of it and he drew the attention of the attackers and they followed him as he speed off through the trees and I swear I heard him laugh …I am sorry Iruka I did everything I could to stop him…to find him”

Iruka nodded he knew the young man had done everything he could, which probably wasn’t much seeing as he seemed to be about 15 and fresh out of the chunin exams but he must have been good if he got to go on a mission with Kakashi. He sighed and turned “Don't stay up and worry yourself go back to sleep” He left quickly and when he got outside it hit him that he hadn’t told the man his name but the young boy had know him. He quickly jumped up into the trees, the swords shifting at his waist and he flew through the trees easily. His movements were fluid now and he moved with precision.

The night smelled fresh and as he ran he pursed his lips in fury. He was ready to kill and he would but patience is a virtue and he was willing to wait. He was flying and he found a pace he felt he could go at for miles. Finally he came to a stop to rest and he panted as he crouched on a tree branch. When he went to the Hokage’s not only did he look for names but also to see where the team had gone. The had been heading for The Land of the Clouds, they had indeed been going to just look and so the first place he was headed was there, the Land of the Clouds.

Iruka fell asleep under a tree and the slight rain that was falling awakened him the next morning. He licked the rain that fell around his mouth and he sat back on his heels. He could already tell he was close to the Land of the Clouds and he was slightly surprised, he didn’t think he had covered that much ground last night. He stood stretched and then jumped back up into the trees.

He came to a town at around noon and he left it at two, smoking curling towards the sky and screams following him through the trees. He had gotten what he wanted, all he needed to do was torch a few houses and then threaten there lords well-being and the men sang like canaries. What he heard was that there had been fighting and they had taken prisoners but one of the prisoners was from Kanohagure No Sato. It hadn’t mattered though they took him all the same and he was being held at a village in the north. They didn’t know if the man was still alive but they had taken his headband and sent it back, mimicking the ritual of death.

Iruka was now hd fod for the nearest village to the north and he was filled with new hope. Kakashi might still be alive and he wasn’t about to miss this chance to find out if his lover still lived, he would burn down a whole village if he had to. He arrived at around five, he was tired and his skills were becoming sloppy as he landed on a branch on the outskirts of town and he almost lost his balance. He crouched on the branch and listened, the town seemed very lively as if a party had just gotten back from a raid and they were celebrating. A slow smile spread across his face and he jumped to the ground quietly. He gently removed his headband, quickly redid his hair and then safely tucked Kakashi's headband in his belt before heading for the village. He left his mask in place but he didn’t get many looks and so when he sauntered into the bar there was a pause but nothing more.

After four hours he was welcomed like one of the Kumo No Kuni and he had one guy draped over him, drunk and rambling on about the spohe hhe had reaped earlier that week. He was slightly drunk himself and he knew he was flirting but when he asked to see what the man had got he wasn’t denied. He followed the man down the street each other supporting the other and occasionally stopping so one of them could be sick on the side of the road. Finally he came to a stop in front of a quiet, dark house and he was lead inside. The man tried to lead him to the bedroom but he wouldn’t have it, not till he saw the spoils of the attack and so he was lead to another bedroom, one that was as dark as the house but there on the spare bed lay a still figure.

He felt his breath catch in his throat as the man lead him forward and rolled the man on the bed over. He let out a hiss of rage when he saw it wasn’t Kakashi and he turned quickly, pulling out a kunai and ending the mans life with a quick swipe over his neck. Blood splattered his face and the man sleeping on the bed next to him. He sneered and left quickly, he was pissed now he had to go make more friends and he didn’t want to stay here much longer.

Three days later and Iruka was pissed and he swore every guy in town was tripping head over heels for him, but he didn’t mind, it only made it easier to get inside there house and see there “spoils of war” He had killed a total of four men and the village was starting to suspect something, he knew his stay here wouldn’t last much longer. Then one night, he was out drinking and flirting when a particularly handsome man came his way. He didn’t brag about his war trophy all he wanted was Iruka but the young chunin was doing more than listening when he was talking and he knew the man had also gotten a human memorably.

He allowed himself to be lead to the mans house and just like all the others he was lead to a spare room with a man laying on the bed but this time was different. He breathed in sharply as he saw the shock of silver hair on the pillow and he rushed to his lover’s side.

“Kakashi!” he whispered as he stroked the jonin's sweaty hair and cooed in his ear softly, totally forgetting about the man who had brought him here until…

“ You know this barbarian?!” The man voice rose and Iruka turned around slowly and in a few seconds blood painted his face and stained the carpet. His skills had sharpened since he had first started out and the man had been an easy take down. Now he was worried about his lover that was sweating on the bed and he slid a hand over the mans forehead, he had a fever.

He quickly checked Kakashi's body for wounds and when his hands brushed over the mans side and he heard a soft grunt he stopped, quickly cutting the mans shirt. The wound was deep and it had not been dressed properly so it was probably infected and making the Jonin sick. He looked worriedly at his lovers face and had to swallow at the sight of how pale it was. ‘ I have to get him out of here, now!’ he quickly scoped the older man up in his arms and a sickening feeling washed over him as he felt how light the man was. He ran out of the house and made a bee line straight for the forest.

In the safety of the trees he gently laid Kakashi down and listened. He knew they didn’t have much time and sure enough he could hear the screams of the villagers as the discovered the mans body and the missing prisoner. He quickly ripped off his mask and he leaned Kakashi against a nearby tree. “ Wait here and don't go anywhere ok?” he whispered to the semi-conscious Jonin before climbing to the top of the tree quickly. There to the south about a mile or two lay a river, the best place he could get Kakashi to before he could actually try and dress the jonin's wounds properly. He shimmed down the tree and gathered his wounded lover in his arms and heading for the river.
