*~*~*~*
Watching Hinata sit down across from him in the training field, having decided to have the talk on Uzumaki land and in one of the training grounds, Naruto sighed. He didn’t want either of their apartments to end up destroyed if things turned in a bad direction. Hinata stared at him, calmly smiling and making him groan.
“Hinata…” he started, rubbing at his face. “I have no idea how to say this.”
“Say what?” she asked, frowning at him, feeling as if something was going to happen that she wouldn’t like.
“I think we need some time apart,” Naruto said after a moment of thinking. Hinata winced. “We’ve been together for close to four years and have been in each other’s pockets for just as long. In the last two years, no matter how much I hate to say it, there hasn’t been the spark that we had when we were together for that first year and a half. Hell, even the sex has become something to scratch an itch and nothing more,” he sighed. He rubbed at his face. “Hinata, you’ve also been expecting me to be someone that I’m really, really not.”
“What do you mean by that?” Hinata asked, looking offended.
Naruto just gave her a look. “I’m not a straight-laced clan head, Hinata. I’m Uzumaki Naruto, Head of the Uzumaki Clan, head of the Namikaze Clan, and future Hokage. But I haven’t changed that much from who I am in all actuality,” he said, rubbing at his face. “I’m still going to have fun with things. I’m still going to be loud and bouncy. I’m not going to be like your father. Or the elders. Or anyone else in your clan. Fuck, even Neji asked why I was with you before.”
“Why were you with me then?” Hinata asked, fingers curled in her lap as she stared at Naruto as he returned her stare.
“I loved you. I don’t know if I love you like that now. Or at least if I ever loved you deep enough to love you forever,” Naruto admitted, shaking his head. “We haven’t been truly happy with each other and I’m questioning if you’ve seen anything but the guy who smiled and fought even when others would have given up,” he said. “Hinata, when I see you, I see you. I see a wonderful woman from a powerful clan who is changing all of the old traditions that she was raised with, but I also see the flaws you have.”
“And you think I don’t see the flaws in you,” Hinata summarized. Naruto smiled softly. “I…see,” she said slowly, playing with her sleeve pocket. “I think I do need to think about this,” she admitted.
“That’s why I think we should stop dating for right now. If we want to start dating again, sure, let’s. But until then, I don’t think that we should date,” he said. “Here’s my key to your Hyuuga compound house,” he continued, holding out the key to her. Hinata took it, staring at it for a moment before she pulled out her own key ring and took off the keys to his apartment, handing it over.
“I think I’ll be thinking about this for a while,” she mused. Naruto smiled sadly while she stood up and left the training grounds, taking the least frequented path once she had left the Uzumaki clan grounds as she headed home. Hinata’s mind was spinning with all of the things that Naruto had said.
And the ones that he hadn’t said.
“Do I really look at him and not see who he truly is?” she asked her door, using her key to unlock it before pushing it open, frowning. “Did I really miss who he is?”
Stepping inside, she didn’t react to the fact that Neji was there, holding a tall glass of what she knew was spiked iced coffee, a treat that Kiba had gotten his team hooked on when they had started to learn what alcohol was. She took it with a sigh and stared at her cousin. “So, he broke it off?” he asked.
Hinata nodded. “He said that there wasn’t any spark between us. Not anymore. Not for the last couple of years,” she said, sipping at the coffee in her hands as she shut the door behind her. “He says that I don’t…that I don’t actually see him.”
Neji sighed and drew her to the living room where his own cup of spiked ice coffee sat, sitting down and crossing his legs. Hinata sat near him with a frown, pushing his hair back out of his face. “I don’t think you ever truly saw who he was,” he said, frowning slightly to himself. “He’s not this perfect knight in shining armor. He’s not a Prince Charming either no matter that he’s a Prince of Uzushio and Konohagakure,” he continued, sighing. He hated to hurt his cousin but before he couldn’t do anything, not without breaking up their relationship before it was ready to break.
Hinata sighed, slumping in her seat and frowning. “I guess I need to really think about what things don’t I?” she asked. Neji nodded. “What do you think I should do beyond think about everything?” She looked to her cousin with a frown, staring at the thoughtful look on his face.
“I think that you need to work on who you are first. You have based so much of yourself on what others expect that I don’t believe that you’ve learned who you are,” Neji said, draining part of his coffee while Hinata sipped at her own. “You have always been the Hyuuga Heiress. The Older Sister. The shy friend. The Disappointment. Naruto-san’s girlfriend. My Cousin. But who is Hyuuga Hinata? Who are you truly at the core?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.
Hinata whimpered. “I don’t think I know who I am,” she admitted, eyes watering. “I don’t know who I am any more. I have allowed myself to base myself on so many other’s opinions, haven’t I?” she asked. Neji gazed at her. She sniffed. “I think I want to get drunk now. My relationship crashed and burned, and I have just discovered that I haven’t really known myself in a very long time.”
Neji smiled and summoned a mouse summons, writing a note to the Desk Chunins to take Hinata off any rotations for the day and that she would come in on the day off that happened the day after tomorrow. Sending it off, he stood and checked her alcohol cabinet. “I’m going to gather food and drink and we’ll hole up. For now, drink the coffee that you have. I will make some more coffee and check your tea supply while I’m at it. Do…do you want me to swing by Naruto’s place and pick up anything that you have there?” he asked.
Hinata hesitated before nodding her head. “Yes please,” she replied. She put her half-finished cup to the side, rubbing at her face, wincing slightly. “I won’t be able to face him right now. Much less see him face to face.” She stood. “I’ll make the coffee and make you a quick list. I also have some money so you can use that.”
Neji nodded and followed after her, taking the list and money before leaving her to start cleaning her kitchen. She hadn’t been home for longer than a few hours to catch some sleep for quite a while, and she had always found that cleaning helped her clear her mind so that she could think about whatever was bothering her.
Neji had no doubt that when he returned, she would be elbow deep in cleaning and ignoring the rest of the world until food was shoved under her nose. He was looking forward to that, especially since he had to talk with Naruto about what he was planning now that he had finally finished the breaking of their relationship.
