Chapter 47
The days passed but Kakashi was still no closer to passing the final hurdle. Each of their sessions ended with Iruka smiling up at him from beneath the water. Iruka brushed off all of his apologies by joking he was simply living up to his namesake. He’d learned very early that with a name like “dolphin” he’d better learn how to hold his breath and swim. On better nights he’d tell Kakashi not to worry, when the time was right he too would be able to live up to the name scarecrow – dressed haphazardly, sporting a goofy grin with something rigid filling his ass.It was something he didn’t say very often. It was hard to maintain his perception of the jounin, and his own composure, with the jounin blushing worse than Hinata when they covered section on bloodlines and marriages. The shy girl was one of the few who knew the full history of Konoha including Senju Mito’s maiden name and the power hidden within the Uzumaki bloodline.Their investigation seemed to stall as well. They spent more time in town but each visit only provided evident to support the things they already knew. It was useful but not the groundbreaking information needed to return home.
“Shinsuke you, keep on ahead, I need to stop for a moment,” Kaede called out as they hopped through the trees.
She and Shinsuke had finished the medical checks in the surrounding villages and were on their way back to Kaibara. She was still pissed that Ryuu had sent her off like some child. Even if he was the child whose future would not be determined her spouse should have shown her more trust. She dropped to the ground when the cabin came into view and sprinted to the door.Kakashi felt the chakra approaching and waited until Kaede had rapped on the door a few seconds before opening it, “Kaede-san, is there something wrong?”“Yes, this child in my stomach doesn’t seem to realize it can sit places other than my bladder. May I please use your restroom?” she desperately blurted.Kakashi opened the door wider and extended his arm in a wide flourish, “Make yourself at home.”After relieving her bladder, Kaede did a quick search of the bathroom cabinets. Towels, toilet paper, soap, razors, shave cream, air freshener, matches, medicine, nothing out of the ordinary could be found. She was lifting the lid of the toilet when she heard Rui asking who was at the door. She lowered the lid without checking beneath it. She flushed, washed her hands then exited. She greeted her Rui and thanked Shishi for his hospitality once more then launched into her profession, “Shishi, do you mind if I give you another check up? How have you been feeling?”This time she waited for permission to send her chakra over his body. He was mostly healed but there was still disturbances in his chakra that she couldn’t attribute to anything other than his lingering injuries. “Have you two resumed penetrative sex?”Shishi squeaked, his eyes widened, his face turned red but he managed to shake his head no.“It’s no hurry Kaede-san. I’m happy as long as we are together, that can wait until Shishi feels up to it,” Rui said reassuringly.“Yes, well, that is understandable and very commendable. I’ll be heading home soon. I was hoping that you two had become romantic so I could do another examination. Sometimes injuries won’t reveal themselves until you’ve resumed your normal activities. Even you even though you feel better you won’t be completed healed,” Her voice softened as she saw the look of panicked anticipation on Shishi’s face. She smiled warmly, “Don’t rush on my account; it probably is better that you do take things slowly. A healed soul will do far more than rushed sex for your physical condition.”There was a groan from overhead and an “I told you so” before they heard the familiar sound of noisy ninjas dispersing.Kaede waited until the other signatures disappeared before confirming her own suspicions. She cupped Iruka’s face in her hands so her thumbs rested on either side of his scar, “Whoever did this to you was in a very emotional state and left a lot of residual chakra. The mark was done deliberately so your face would be permanently marred.” Kaede sent a small pulse of energy into the scar felt a strong familiar pulse in response. She let her hands slide away from Rui’s face and whispered something which froze the Konoha nin on the spot. “I will keep your secret. Let us both pray to all the deities in the sky and the all the demons in the seven hells, that we never cross paths again, Iru-ka, child of Raijin no Ryuuko.”She shakily performed a teleportation jutsu and disappeared. Tetsuryuu, her beloved spouse was playing a dangerous game that could get them all killed.Iruka’s heart was pounding. He had to get out of there. They had to get out of there. She knew. Damn it. She knew.He could see cold dark eyes staring into his, the press of a hand across his face, lips on his forehead, fingers brushing his hair from his face, strong arms pulling him into an embrace, a clear lilting voice in his ear, “So long as you have life on this earth, I will always be with you.”He felt the overwhelming peace, joy, love and contentment that he had not felt since the fox attack. Love. He could feel it coming from the scar in a soft gentle wave. He never imagined that someone could deliberately activate it.Iruka slumped to the floor, pulled his knees to his chest, pressed his hands to his scar desperately trying to hold it all in, to once more grasp that warm familiar feeling and sobbed. Her face blossomed behind his eyes, her scent filled his nostrils and he was once more a small child enveloped in her being. He knew Kakashi was shaking him, desperately trying to reach inside her cocoon and pull him out but he didn’t want to lose that feeling. Love. His mother’s love. He wanted to hold onto it forever even if it killed him.
Kakashi had broken three nails; both his and Iruka’s hands were bleeding. The woman had done something to him. She healed him, then did something to Iruka. Whatever it was centered on his scar. He curled his fingers around Iruka’s, digging the bony ends of his digits into sensitive flesh and pulling until Iruka’s face was fully exposed. He wrested the chuunin’s hands to his sided and pinned him with his knees against the wall then slapped him as hard as he could.
The feeling was already fading when Kakashi forced his hands away. It was completely gone by the time he slapped him. All what was left was a cold empty feeling made worse knowing that he could not evoke the sensation himself.
He pressed his head forward and sobbed against Kakashi’s shoulder.Kakashi’s voice was low and shaky. It trembled with trepidation, “Iruka, who wanted to injure you so badly they buried chakra your scar?”The chuunin smiled and tearfully admitted, “My mother.”Kakashi rocked back, freeing Iruka’s arms and pulling the chuunin on top of him. He’d researched the teacher when he began to show an interest in Naruto. Umino Iruka, son of refugees who immigrated to Konoha during the second war. The scar was present in his first Academy picture. Of all the people he’d imagined disfigured Iruka, he never would have guessed it was the man’s own mother. “I’m sorry that she harmed you.”Iruka didn’t remember receiving the scar. He imagined that it hurt. But his mother was a good ninja. It was possible he hadn’t felt a thing. He remembered the way she would look at him and the love in her voice and the then unknown truth in her words as she ran her fingers over it smoothing it with chakra as his face grew.“It broke my heart to mark you, but as a loving mother I felt it was something I must do. Our world is not kind to children or the beautiful. Every time you look in the mirror, see how much I love you. Every time someone calls you plain or ugly or overlooks you, know that I have saved you. My dearly beloved son, my precious little Iru-ka, know that when the day comes and the village needs a certain type of sacrifice, I loved you enough to ensure they would not pick you. So long as you have life on this earth I will always be with you.”Kakashi felt Iruka shake his head against his shoulder. “You’re wrong. There’s nothing to be sorry for. My parents were clanless refugees. My mother knew the types of mission that only a pretty boy could do would never be given to a Nara or Uchiha. She saved me from that type of use. She gave me this scar out of love and made sure it could never be removed.”
Kakashi relaxed. Iruka was talking again and seemed to be calming down. “Smart woman. It takes guts to defy a village to save your child. You’re lucky she was your mother.”Iruka raised his head to look at Kakashi with tear filled eyes. He heard the slight bitterness in the man’s voice, “Kakashi, what did you parents let them do to you…”Kakashi shook his head, “Nothing like that,” he whispered brokenly. “Sensei’s wife tried to give me a childhood, but by then it was already too late…”
Iruka waited until Kakashi was asleep to write the letter to Konoha. It would serve no purpose to tell Kakashi their cover had been blown. Kaede had called him by name and recognized him as his mother’s son. He now knew for certain that Ryu had to have recognized him from day one. If her intent was to harm them it she would have done so already. He chose his words and the extraction team carefully; if Ryu had allowed him to operate in the open without blowing his cover then he wouldn’t betray her kindness. They would walk out just as openly as they walked in.
Kakashi woke first the next morning. His limbs were tangled with Iruka’s and the chuunin’s face was next to him. His scar somehow seemed different after learning its true origin. His mother had marked him. She had disfigured her son so the village would not use him. He wished he was naïve enough not to know about those types of missions or believe they were not given to Uchiha children. It was only after the clan was dead and gone that he learned that emotional trauma awakened the Sharingan. In the months prior to his death Obito had been volunteered for several missions in hopes the forcible loss of his innocence would be enough to trigger its awakening. It shamed him to know the real reason Obito was often late for training and their missions. If he had known…
Kakashi inhaled deeply and exhaled slowly; if he had known as a teenager that the Uchiha clan volunteered Obito and other marginal children like him as bargaining chips for pedophiles with information he would not have been any kinder. It like Obito’s penchant for crying would have become ammunition. As he stared at Iruka’s scar he wondered how different his life would have been had his own mother lived. Would he have still been allowed to advance as rapidly as he had? He was still an academy student when she passed. Would she have fought to protect his childhood as fiercely as she had fought to protect his father? He slid forward so he was lying nose to nose with Iruka. He closed his eyes and tried to conjure a mental picture of her. In his heart he knew his answer; his mother had often told him that he had his father’s abilities and her brain. Outwitting an enemy was always preferred but a swift mind paled in comparison to a strong wrist when a kunai was heading his direction. She knew there were several others who could teach him how to use her brain but only his father could teach him how to use his chakra. She saved her husband out of love for him but also out of love for her son.“Ne, Iruka, a mother’s love is strange thing?” Kakashi whispered as he huddled in the warmth next to the chuunin.Kakashi’s eyes popped open and he jerked upwards startling Iruka into full wakefulness.“Wha? Waz happening? Whazz going on?” Iruka questioned looking about the room.Kakashi looked at Iruka debating what he should tell him and how his suspicions would affect their mission. It could be dangerous to suggest such a thing without solid proof but he knew in his current state Iruka’s input could be invaluable. He also knew the danger of sharing a theory while undercover with a companion. It could very easily shift Iruka’s focus from information gathering onto a false lead and draw unwanted attention.Kakashi placed his hand on Iruka’s to calm him, “I thought I heard something. It was probably just one of these ninja mistaking our roof for the highway. I’m sorry. Go back to sleep.”Iruka yawned. He didn’t feel any chakra signatures nearby but that didn’t mean anything. The sun was shining so after his stretch he kissed Kakashi’s cheek and pushed the coves aside. “Since we’re both up we might as well get an early start this morning.”
It was slightly warmer and the sun shone brightly on the frozen lake. Iruka and a very long stick checked the logs where they found the turtle for any additional wildlife before using a crowbar to drag two of the larger pieces of wood from their resting place. He slid several sharpened thin pieces of wire that had once been coat hangers through the logs and placed several more through weak points in the side before declaring it done.
Puzzled, Kakashi asked, “What are you doing?” when Iruka covered the top of them with tar, set it on fire then pushed them out onto the ice.“You’ll see,” Iruka smiled.Kakashi belatedly remembered reading Iruka’s file included proficiency with traps and that he’d most often yelled at Naruto “A prank turns into vandalism the moment you get caught.” The chuunin had set a simple yet effective trap for the fish the thinning ice would not allow him to get. The damp wood wouldn’t catch fire easily but it would get warm and finish the ice. Once the ice melted the slow burning wood would continue to float, warming the water and attracting fish. If the fish didn’t find the warmer water appealing they most certainly would like the assorted bugs, worms, and whatever unfortunate creature Iruka deemed inedible that decided the logs would be a safe place to spend the winter. The trap worked a little too well. Iruka caught several medium sized fish and four large ones then something nudged the log out of the ice. It nudged it several more times before the waterlogged wood fell apart and the tree Iruka anchored the lines to began bending. The fish had gotten caught on the homemade hooks Iruka had hidden in the logs.“I hope you trust your knots,” Kakashi muttered as the creature increased its struggles.Once the struggling stopped. Iruka smacked the line with his walking staff. The fish began jumping and fighting once more but it didn’t last as long this time. Iruka did this a few more times and managed to catch several ptarmigan while waiting for the fish to tire itself out. Or rather Kakashi caught them in one of the underslips formerly belonging to Shibata-san once Iruka herded them his direction. The sun was directly overhead when the two of them decided to retrieve the angry fish. They pulled it in close enough to give the line a little slack then shoved a sturdy freshly cut limb through it. They each grabbed hold of one side then began twisting it to form a makeshift pulley and slowly reeled the fish in.The fish was the size of Naruto once they got it onshore and it had a long pointed snout with several sharp teeth. Iruka stood on the end of it while Kakashi used the metal they’d caught it with to wrap its mouth shut. Once it was secure, Kakashi wiped the sweat from his brow, held out his hands to show the wire and rope has destroyed his gloves bit into his palms. He glared at Iruka, “Rui, my love, if we ever go fishing again and I even think that you are trying to catch something that big I will drown you myself. Do you realize how many times that monster almost pulled us in? We would have frozen to death! Froze! And that’s only if its friends didn’t eat us first!”“I.DID. NOT. SIGN.UP.TO.BE.FROZEN.FISH.FOOD!” Kakashi screamed maniacally. He pointed at his crotch and yelled, “THIS.IS.NOT.A.FISH.STICK!”Iruka did the only thing he could in that situation, he laughed. He bent over clutched his stomach and laughed until tears rolled down his face. He’d forgotten about that little tidbit in Kakashi’s file. He’d been fast tracked through the ranks and skipped the years the academy taught swimming. He guessed by Kakashi’s reaction that the jounin decided water walking was good enough and opted not take Sandaime’s advice that he participate in the voluntary jounin swimming lessons.“It’s not funny you asshole! I could have died! Died! I’d be dead!”This tirade only made Iruka laugh harder – Kakashi – Konoha’s only non-swimming ninja.“Fine! Laugh all you want. Next time you go up on the roof to make a repair I’m stealing the ladder! So nah” Kakashi taunted before sticking out his tongue and pulling down his eyelid.“If he doesn’t appreciate a fine specimen like yourself I certainly will,” A voice said dropping down beside Kakashi.Kakashi jumped swinging his arms automatically. He stared at the newcomer and mustered his courage to ask, “Do you like fishing?”“Absolutely not,” Takamoto replied.Kakashi smiled and looked at Iruka; he could feel several familiar and far friendlier chakra signatures overhead. His tirade had apparently gathered an audience. He stood straighter, pushed his shoulders back and tossed his hair before extending his elbow and replying snootily, “I will allow you to escort me to the village.”Iruka rolled his eyes, “Oh please, he’s a ninja Shishi. Takamoto-san, I understand you’re a ninja and risk your life on a daily basis so please be careful with Shishi. He is bad for the blood pressure and you don’t seem like the type of man to take unnecessary risks with your health.“Ru,”“Yes, Shishi,” Iruka replied sweetly.“Bite me.” Kakashi instructed venomously.“Next time I promise. I’ll spell my name in hickeys on your inner thigh,” Iruka retorted before opening and closing his mouth to half chomp / half kiss at Kakashi.Kakashi linked his arm with Takamoto’s, “Ninja-san, tell me, is it a crime to kill your ex-lovers around here? Not that I want you to, but for future references.”“That sneaky little…” Iruka muttered as he looked down at the cart laden with birds and fish. “Kaede said he was mostly healthy. He could have carried two birds or a small pot of fish.”“Don’t worry Rui-san, I’ll help you,” Shinsuke volunteered dejectedly.“Dammit,” Iruka cursed as he watched Takamoto bandage Kakashi’s hands. “I’m sorry Shinsuke. He doesn’t mean anything by it. I didn’t tell him about the two of you. He doesn’t know.”“Yeah, but Takamoto does,” he sighed as he performed the same jutsu to surround the fish in water as the man at the other lake. “He always does this. I don’t get it? Why does he jerk me around like this?”“I don’t know him well enough to answer your question properly but if I had to guess, it because of the things we spoke about earlier and maybe because he’s afraid.”“Afraid?” Afraid of what? He’s a jounin! It’s not like I can do anything to hurt him,” Shinsuke huffed as he and Iruka began moving through the forest.“There are different kinds of hurt Shinsuke. My father was a brave man and had fought in the war but on his deathbed he admitted one of the most terrifying things he’d ever done was to fall in love with my mother and start a family with her. He said the worst thing he’d ever experienced was the death of a loved one and he didn’t want to risk losing her. He apologized for the pain his death would cause us.“It’s ridiculous but in some ways I understand what he was saying. You’re both ninja, maybe he’s afraid to get too close in case you die or he doesn’t want you to be sad if something happens to him and he leaves you behind?” Iruka speculated“But why? There’s plenty of time between now and when the first attacks are scheduled. If all goes to plan three years from now he’ll be high enough in Anbu he won’t have to leave the village and will be our eyes and ears within. I know know I’ll never be anything more than a medic nin but I should have learned enough to be able to work in the hospital full time instead of going on missions. It’s not like we’ll be ready to take on A until Yukie goes down.”“Besides the longer he waits the higher the chance A will order him to go forth and multiply and he’ll decides he likes breasts attached to his holes then I really won’t have chance,” Shinsuke pessimistically speculated.Iruka didn’t reply. He hoped the boy would continue to ramble and give away more of their plans but he didn’t. They walked quietly behind Takamoto and Kakashi who were chatting animatedly. The latter would turn around from time to time and smile coyly.Takamoto and Kakashi parted ways once they reached the town and the Cloud jounin made a show of bending over and kissing Kakashi’s hand before going into Mama-san’s.Iruka yelled, “Hey Shishi tell him where that hand -”Shinsuke clapped his hand over Iruka’s mouth, “Are you crazy? There are children out here who could have heard you!”Iruka laughed, “Shishi did most of the bird catching. A few of them pooped.”“Now that’s low,” the Snow chuunin laughed. “That’s real low and exactly what I needed to hear.”Iruka groaned while looking at the birds, “Oh crap, speaking of that I meant to drop two of these off at the house. It will be hell trying to get them back once someone sees them.”“I’ll take them for you Rui, I’ll be right back,” Shinsuke replied taking the birds Iruka indicated and disappearing into the forest.Kakashi was standing at the street leading to the poor section of town when Iruka caught up to him. He smiled at Iruka, “You know, that ninja is clearly out of his mind. He actually thought there was a chance I would return to his secret lair with him.”He wrapped his arms around Iruka and laid his head on his shoulder, “Does he not realize what a shitty time I had when I was last in the company of ninja and that I am madly in love with the man who took me away from them?”Iruka hugged Kakashi and he could feel him trembling in his arms, “I am sorry about the fish.”“Fuck the fish, we’re selling all this shit, you’re buying me lunch, a bottle of alcohol, taking me home and giving me a bath. I am not waking up until day after tomorrow. My nerves can not handle this,” Kakashi groaned.“Yes my love, your wish is my command,” Iruka agreed. They went to the upper class section first. The four birds sold for five times each as much as the fish. They then went to the poor neighborhoods. They were able to trade fish for freshly harvested winter greens, rice noodles, another pair of gloves for Kakashi, onions, tofu, rice, eggs, and a small bit of smoked pork. They took the gar to Mama-san. None of the poor families had the time to prepare the fish properly. She took one look at it and said, “I was right, you two are monsters. Only another monster would be able to get that thing from the lake. It’s been there since I was a child. What’s the price you’re putting on it?”Iruka thought about for a moment, “The usual price plus ten ivc. I’ll clean it for free in exchange for the teeth, skin, scales and a hot meal for the two of us.”Mama-san sized up the fish once more then considered the price of two meals, “Deal.”Iruka smiled and removed the kunai disguised as a fishing knife from his pocket. He made a circle around the neck then removed a row of scales from the underbelly. He cut long ways down the underside then asked Mama-san for a cup of water. He poured a little of the water into the opening then slowly worked it around the fish. Once a portion of skin was loose he carefully began pulling it off the fish. He repeated the progress and by the time Mama-san realized she’d been swindled he was finished.Kakashi stood in the doorway between the kitchen and food prep room looking out into the customer section of the restaurant. Kaibara was a town without ninja but this design was similar to ones in ninja villages. The seating areas were separated by lattices which allowed privacy as well as the opportunity to look about and see who else had come in. A fireproof stone divider genin chin level high gave way to a thick glass with open decorative curtains. The glass stopped four inches from the ceiling so the scents could waft throughout the building. Several of the most potent poisons had to be cooked along with the food if they were to be effective. Once they were cooked they could not be tasted and it would be difficult for an Inuzuka to distinguish its scent among spices but while they were cooking the aromas were so distinctive that someone as clueless as Naruto fresh out of the academy would have noticed. The cooking portion was then divided into what most called a butchery by another wall of thick glass. The butchery was where all meat and animals were prepared. Ninja were a paranoid lot. The better restaurants kept small animals out back where their patrons could inspect creature’s health before making a dining specification. A poisoned animal equaled a poisoned meal and any chemical that would survive the cooking process manifested in its living host.Kakashi glanced out into the customer section, careful not to linger on any particular diner too long, as he listened to Mama-san teasing Iruka about renegotiating their one-sided deal. He waved at Shinsuke when he walked in after completing Iruka’s errand and didn’t think much of the teen’s half-hearted return greeting. He glanced back at the table where Arisa was sitting with another kunoichi her age when the young waitress serving them squealed at what she thought was a teen magazine.Kakashi chucked, recognizing the small bingo book for what it was - one of the minor countries had added Sasuke to their up and coming pre-emptive strike edition. His own little masked face had adorned the cover at age eleven. Itachi was the cover child at age nine.He was pulled from his musings when he heard an excited voice yell, “Hojo-sensei!”Kakashi turned to see the man, from the other lake walking into the restaurant alone.“All these years I was under the impression that ninja were quiet. I clearly have missed something,” the man replied ruffling his student’s hair.Shinsuke lowered his head bashfully but his apology was quickly cut off when the ruffle turned into a light tap. Hojo said with a light pout, “I’ve missed you as well Shinsuke. Besides we’re among friends. I was expecting a different greeting,”The teen’s eyes lit up and he threw his arms around the man, “Father!”“It’s good to see you too my son,” the man replied warmly. It was only due to his years of training that Kakashi caught the smirk he sent to the one eared man and Mama-san. The one eared man scowled and tightened his grip on his sake tokkuri; Mama-san growled and narrowed her eye dangerously in response.Hojo smiled and walked over to the one eared man’s table then spoke, “Brother, how have you been?”The man’s lips turned up and he replied “Just fine Aniki. And yourself?”The cordially cold conversation continued in what most in Konoha called Hyuuga Hostile then took a dip towards Tsunade-Danzo frost when Hojo stated, “I hear you’ve been helping Manzo look out for my son? Ryuu tells me his taijutsu is improving.”Sake slushed out of the tokkuri as he set it down on the table and replied, “Of course, it’s always a joy to help my nephew.”Hojo rubbed Shinsuke’s belly and ruffled his hair once more, “It’s obvious Mama-san has been feeding him well. It’s only been two months and I can tell that you’ve grown.”The dried herbs Mama-san had been holding turned to dust as she growled once more, “That mother-fucking child stealing bastard.”Kakashi dared not look at Iruka. He continued to study the three males in the dining room. Both adult men were blond and shared similar features but there were subtle differences in their skin tone, hair color, bone structure, and body types so he was willing to wager the older two were half-siblings. Hojo’s face was round and his jaw line was not as defined as Shinsuke’s or One-Ears. Kakashi had learned the hard way that skin tone alone meant nothing when defining parentage among people whose skin contained higher amounts of melanin but judging by Shinsuke’s and Hojo’s bone structure the teen was unaware of his true lineage. The angry One-eared man was far more likely to have sired him.Iruka glanced up at Mama-san’s outburst then quickly lowered his head. In this bright light of the working area her eyes were the same stormy shade of blue as Shinsuke’s instead of the steel gray they appeared to be in the dimmer customer area.
