Author's note: Took me longer than I intended to, but I'm finally here again with another update for this story.
For this chapter I was debating between two prompts and eventually the more action orientated one won. Not completely fluffy this one, but not a tearjerker either, so you know *coughs*
Warnings: Sasuke's pov; set quite a bit in the future when Keiko is around four; some drama; mentions of domestic abuse; threats of violence; Naruto kicking arse
Dedicated to: everyone wanting to see Naruto kick some arse.
I hope you'll like this new chapter!
Chapter 45
He was finally finished for today. He shut down his laptop and groaned, stretching his arms. He loved his job still after all these years, but the paperwork remained a pain in the arse.
Karin had offered to help him out, but he had overheard her making plans with Suigetsu earlier today to celebrate their anniversary and had sent her home earlier than usual. No sense in having them both bored out of their mind by doing paperwork.
He checked his watch, sighing when he noticed it was seven fifteen already. Good thing he had thought to call Naruto earlier today to warn him he would be home later than usual. Normally today was their date night – something they had started doing every two weeks once they had discovered that taking care of four children plus their own jobs left them with not much time for themselves as a couple – but fortunately for him, Naruto hadn't minded delaying their night with a couple of hours.
The kids were at their uncles' place, spending the night there in order to give their parents some privacy. Sasuke was pretty sure he would be met with knowing smirks when he would arrive in the morning to pick up his children again, but that was a small price to pay to be able to spend some uninterrupted time with his husband.
He really loved his children, but sometimes it was just nice to spend some time with Naruto alone, without one of them bursting into the room because they wanted to play or they wanted to ask something or because one of them was being mean to the other one.
He was putting away the last files in the cabinet when his ears picked up the sound of approaching footsteps and without turning around, he called out, "Karin? I told you to take the evening off, why are you still here?"
"Not Karin, sorry," a deep voice with a hint of slur spoke and Sasuke stiffened, turning around slowly.
A man with lanky, brown hair and bloodshot brown eyes stood in the doorway; his shirt stained in several places. He absolutely reeked of booze and he was holding a steak knife in his right hand; the sharp tip of it aimed at Sasuke's direction.
"Who are you and what do you want?" Sasuke asked flatly, making sure to keep the desk between them.
The man didn't look that steady on his feet, but Sasuke didn't dare to move yet, not when that knife was being waved threateningly at him.
"Of course you don't know me, why would you?" the man said bitterly. "Not like you didn't convince my wife to leave me behind and take the kids with her, the fucking bitch!"
All at once Sasuke knew who he was dealing with and he tensed up. The man in front of him had to be Watanabe Makoto, the ex-husband of one of his patients, Aiko. She was one of the very first patients he had acquired, having found his practice when he had just started out. Two weeks ago during her yearly check-up she had broken down into tears and had confessed that her husband had been abusing her for several years now and that she was afraid he would soon start taking out his frustrations on their two sons.
She'd kept the abuse a secret for years, too ashamed to admit that she was being hurt by the one person who'd promised to cherish her for the rest of their lives, but she had reached her breaking point during her appointment.
Sasuke didn't have much experience with domestic abuse, but he did have some numbers saved of places that could help people in her situation. He'd given her those numbers, swore they would help her if she reached out for their help and had urged her to get herself and her kids to safety. He had spent more than an hour talking with her, making her understand that the situation was in no way her fault and that nobody deserved to be hurt, especially not by the one person they were supposed to trust with their life.
Apparently she had taken his words to heart and had left the miserable bastard after all.
"Perhaps you shouldn't have been such an abusive prick then," Sasuke smiled thinly. "Then she wouldn't have left you."
He stilled when Watanabe took a step forwards, raising the knife in the air. "You shut the fuck up!" he spat enraged, spit flying through the air. "You don't know shit about us, so shut the fuck up!"
"Why are you here, Watanabe?" Sasuke repeated his question, keeping his eyes both on the knife and on Watanabe's face.
The man laughed ugly, his face drawn back with rage. "I want to make you fucking pay for what you did to me! It's all your fault that she left me and you need to pay for that!"
"You really think you can get away with whatever you're planning?" Sasuke asked scornfully. "There's a camera installed; the police will instantly know who you are if you try something here."
"Shut up! You shut up, you fucking arsehole!" Watanabe yelled, waving the knife wildly through the air. "You think you're so smart, huh, with your fancy doctor's degree? Think you've got it all made all because you come from a stinking rich fam-"
He abruptly shut up when Sasuke's phone started ringing on the desk and the Alpha clenched his jaw when he saw that Naruto was calling him.
"Who's that?" Watanabe asked suspiciously, glaring at the vibrating phone.
"My husband," Sasuke answered clipped.
Watanabe gestured with the knife at the phone. "Well, pick it up, will you? Don't want him to think there's something wrong. Just don't think you can warn him or so, because you will regret that," he hissed.
"Tch." Irritated, Sasuke picked up his phone and accepted the call, forcing himself to sound calm when he greeted Naruto, "Hey, I'm nearly done here."
"That's great to hear, because I'm my way," Naruto said cheerfully and added mischievously, "Figured we could start our night early on."
Shit, Naruto was coming over here. If he arrived while Watanabe was still here … Sasuke's blood turned into ice in his veins.
Doing some quick thinking, he said, "No, tell Itachi he'll have to wait for a bit longer while I finish up here."
"Itachi?" Naruto repeated surprised. "Sasuke, why the hell are you talking about your brother? We don't have any - " His sharp intake of breath had Sasuke clenching his hold around his phone. "Sasuke, is something wrong? Is something there with you?"
"Yes, just put my dinner aside, I'll be home soon," Sasuke replied, keeping his eyes trained on Watanabe, who was staring back at him with calculating eyes.
"Shit!" Naruto cursed and there was the sound of some cars honking their horns in the background. "I'm calling the police, are they armed?"
"Yeah, just shutting down my computer and I need to put some files away still, but that's it," Sasuke confirmed, then after a short bout of hesitation, said, "Love you."
Naruto's voice gained a rough edge when he replied, "I love you too. You're going to be okay, all right?"
"Yeah, okay, see you soon," Sasuke said and hung up when Watanabe stared making impatient noises.
"Took you long enough," he grunted annoyed and pointed the knife at Sasuke's seat. "Now sit down while I decide what I'm going to do with you."
As Sasuke slowly sat down again, his hands clenched into fists on his lap, he lamented for the first time in his life that he never took up Kisame's offer to teach him how to use a gun.
"I know what I want to do with you!" Watanabe grinned a while later.
He'd been muttering to himself the entire time, packing back and forth feverishly, brandishing the knife at Sasuke every time he so much as twitched. Sasuke had considered making a run for it regardless, but Watanabe remained too close to the door to take the chance.
"First we're going to the bank. You're loaded as hell, so it's only fair you're going to recompensate me for the shit you pulled with my wife." He grinned then, his eyes glinting viciously. "After that, well, we'll see. Up you go now. I have to warn you, though, one wrong move and you'll pay for it, understood?"
Sasuke gave a single nod, gritting his teeth together.
"Up you go then, come on, don't want to waste too much time," Watanabe said irritated and forced Sasuke to walk in front of him, the tip of the knife pressed against his back.
"If you think you can get away with this, you're mistaken," Sasuke warned him, but Watanabe just cackled.
"They'll have to find me first, won't they? Now shut up before I cut out your tongue."
The cold winter air was like a shock to his system when he was forced outside without his jacket and he spotted a white sedan parked in front of the building.
"Now be a good doctor and just go to – HEY! WHAT THE FUCK!"
Sasuke whirled around and his mouth dropped open when Watanabe's legs were swept harshly from underneath him, the man landing harshly on his back. The knife clattered on the ground and was kicked away hastily before Watanabe was wrestled onto his stomach, his arms pulled back uncomfortably, making the man scream.
"Oh shut the fuck up!" Naruto snapped, bracing his foot against Watanabe's back. "Before I decide to pull your arms straight out of their sockets, you son of a bitch!"
"Naruto, what the hell are you doing here?" Sasuke asked in a strangled voice, not knowing whether to keep his gaze on the whimpering man on the ground or his husband tugging at Watanabe's arms threateningly every few seconds. "I thought you'd call the police?"
"I did," Naruto confirmed, sparing him a quick glance. "But I figured they might take a while to get here, so I decided to wait here. I was just about to go inside when you two came out."
"He could have hurt you," Sasuke said tersely, stalking closer to the two men.
Blue eyes rolled. "Please, I don't need to hear that from you when you had a knife aimed at your back." He tugged more harshly at Watanabe's arms, making the man whimper piteously. "Besides I had the element of surprise and I wasn't planning on letting him take you somewhere."
"Naruto, this was dangerous! He could have seen you before you could do something," Sasuke insisted, scowling.
"But he didn't. Besides, have you forgotten I trained at a dojo?" Naruto scowled back at him. "I might be forty now, but that doesn't mean I've forgotten how to wipe the floor with somebody! Especially if that somebody thinks he can get away with threatening my husband!"
A police car pulled up then, its blue light flashing, and two people got out, a man and a woman. The woman, dark skinned with fire red hair, whistled lowly as she approached them.
"Man, he targeted the wrong couple, huh?" she smiled wryly.
"Makes our job easier, I suppose," the blue haired man sighed. His glasses glinted in the streetlamp when he bent over Watanabe. "You two mind following us to the precinct? We'll need your testimony about what happened."
"Not like we really have a choice," Naruto muttered, removing his foot and releasing Watanabe's wrists when the woman produced a pair of handcuffs.
She offered him a quick grin. "Sorry to disrupt your evening, but this won't take long, I promise."
"Well, our evening already started with a delay, what's another hour or two?" Sasuke said wryly.
Naruto puffed out his cheeks, but then walked over to him to sling his arms around his waist, pecking his lips. "I suppose I can wait another hour or so. I'm already happy that you're okay."
"Yeah, me too," Sasuke sighed and as they shared another kiss, he ignored the slight trembling in his hands. Instead he just pressed them tighter against Naruto's back, revelling in his husband's warm embrace.
Thank the gods that his mate had no problems being reckless and kicking someone's butt.
Perhaps he should look into getting some lessons from Kisame or his brother, though … One was never too old to learn something new after all.
AN2: I suck at action scenes still, sorry :') Next chapter will be nothing but pure fluff I promise. We'll be going back quite a bit in the past then, with toddler Kei.
Please leave your thoughts behind in a review; should you spot any mistakes, please point them out to me.
I hope to see you all back in the next chapter! Please stay safe and take care of yourselves!
