They didn't sleep. None of them. They spent the next few hours in Jirocho's living room, pacing, waiting and going insane. "He's not coming back." Tenten said, for the fourth time in an hour.
"We don't--" Kakashi started but she cut him off.
"I do." She stood up from where she'd just sat again next to Lee and marched over to him. She jabbed a finger into his chest. "Would you know if something was wrong with Sakura? With Yamato?"
Kakashi stared at her, then looked away. "Probably." He sighed, heavily. He didn't even notice that she'd homed in on his feelings for Yamato. "Okay. We need a plan. We can't just break in and run down there without thinking it through. And before we can plan anything we need some rest. Sakura?" He said, turning to her.
She stood up. "Give me a few in the kitchen." She said and hurried down the hall.
Tenten was shaking her head and he held up a hand. "Think. Do you want to be any good to Gai? Do you want to be able to help him?"
She deflated at that. She was exhausted. And a soldier pill was only going to do so much.
"We all need our wits about us. The nin isn't going to be the only one down there who can fight. And maybe we're ninja, but that doesn't guarantee we'll win. I'm not asking you to sleep the day away. But Gai is strong, he can hang in there for a few more hours. We'll get some rest, put together a decent plan and go. Okay?"
Tenten sighed and the tears she'd been holding back started to fall. They sat in silence for a few more minutes, then Sakura brought out the tea pot and cups. "It's very mild. I didn't spend much time brewing it." She poured the tea out and handed it around. "Get to bed, let it do what it's supposed to do." She was talking mostly to Lee and Tenten. She knew that her guys would sleep anyway because they understood a little better that it wasn't going to hurt Gai, but only help him.
They drank quickly, then Sakura herded Lee and Tenten to their bedroom while Kakashi put the cups and pot away. Thankfully, sleep claimed them shortly thereafter.
"We know the basic layout of each of the levels. I suspect that the lower floors are the same as the upper floors are, with the spoke layout. There'd be no reason to change that." They were sitting in the dining room. Jirocho and Sho were with them as they went over the plan.
Kakashi pointed to the stairway. "This goes all the way to Sanenjin, but it stops there. Where the stairs are to the lower floors are, I don't know. We've only ever been in this room on that level." He pointed to the room the sisters shared. He glanced at Yamato and their eyes met a moment. They still hadn't quite forgiven themselves for that. He forced his attention back to the briefing. "This room is where I saw Gai go in the first night." He pointed to another along the same hallway as the sisters' room.
"I'm willing to bet the stairs to the lower floors are along one of the other hallways. We could just jump. But we don't know what level he's on and we don't know which room he's in. So we need to take it slowly." He sighed.
"Jump?" Sho asked.
Sakura turned to him. She's insisted she sit next to him so she could fill him in like this. She whispered to him, "we have the ability, with our chakra, to make jumps much further than most people can. We could, for instance, jump from Ichienjin to the floor - some six levels - if necessary. It's not ideal…" she said and shrugged.
"Oh." He turned back to the map.
"Anyway, I think the best place to start would be along the same hallway as the room he started in." He frowned. "I'd give just about anything for Sai or one of the Hyuuga." He scratched the back of his head. "Well, we don't have them. We'll have to make due."
He looked up at Lee and Tenten. "When we find him, we're going to need to get him out of there as soon as possible. You two need to concentrate on that. He'll be in no condition to fight. Tenten, take some clothes for him, he's likely being held naked." She nodded.
He turned to Sakura, but she held her hand up. "I know, I'm the medic. I don't intend to get in the way unless I have to."
"Okay. If Sho's information is correct, then the nin is down there somewhere. Remember, he's earth type. So, expect those kinds of attacks." Kakashi paused and looked over at Sho. "Do you want to go with us?"
Sakura looked alarmed. "But he's not a ninja!"
Kakashi just raised an eyebrow. "And not everyone down there is, either. He could be useful," he paused and said, "there are other innocents down there and we could use the help keeping them out of the way."
She turned to stare at Sho. He smiled at her. "I'll be fine. You're a medic, right?" She nodded. "Then you can patch me up if I get a little hurt. But I'm pretty durable."
She shook her head. "Men," she grumbled, but let it go.
"Any questions?" Kakashi asked.
"How do we get in? The club's closed." Sakura glanced at the clock.
"Yuri." Jirocho said. "I talked to him earlier."
"Okay. If there are no more questions…" When no one said anything, he nodded. "Let's move out."
It felt really weird for Sakura to be standing in front of the club in her ninja clothes. She glanced sideways at Tenten. "Yeah, feels weird, doesn't it?" She asked and Sakura nodded.
"Yeah." She sighed. "Okay." She reached out and knocked.
Yuri must have been waiting because he opened the door right away. "Hello." He paused when he looked them over, his eyes widening. "Ninja?"
Sakura smiled. "Can we go in?" She glanced around nervously.
"Of course, I'm sorry." He stepped back and they all filed into the lobby. He looked over them. "I knew something was off about you two." He grinned. "I didn't quite expect this." Then the smile faded. "Is this about the lower levels?"
Sakura nodded. "Yes. Yuri, do you know what goes on down there?"
He shook his head. "I know of the first three, and only in a general sense." He glanced over at Kakashi and Yamato. "So you were investigating?"
They looked at each other, then nodded. "Yes." Kakashi sighed. "One of our team is downstairs on the lower levels. He was supposed to be back this morning and hasn't returned."
Yuri looked over the group. "Ah." He turned to Tenten, "I'm sorry."
She smiled faintly. "We need to go down and get him back. If we're successful, the man who is responsible for Jigoku as a whole will no longer… well, he won't be running any clubs, that's for sure." She wrapped her hand around the strap holding her scroll onto her back and gripped it firmly.
Yuri nodded. "Well, then, I hope you are successful." He paused. "If there's anything else I can do, let me know, okay?"
Sakura nodded and dropped a quick kiss on his cheek. "Thank you." She turned to Kakashi.
"Let's move out."
Sanenjin was deserted. They'd expected as much. The Neko Club wasn't due to open for several hours yet. They slipped quietly down the hallway and found the room he'd been in the night before. There was no trace of him left. "Okay, let's check for stairs."
Four doors later, Tenten called softly, "here!" But before she could take off, Sakura was there, holding on to her.
"Tenten." Tenten turned to her a near frantic look on her face.
"He's close, let me go." There was a note of hysteria creeping into her voice.
But Sakura just shook her head firmly. "Not until you calm down. You'll do him no good if you run through there panicked."
Tenten closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "You're right. I'm sorry."
"Okay." She pulled her aside and let Kakashi go first.
But the lower floor looked just as deserted as Sanenjin did. "Careful. We don't know what might be here." He glanced back to see Sho unsheathing a katana and nodded.
Sakura stared at him. "I didn't know you had that," she hissed.
He just grinned. "You didn't ask." He winked at her, then they turned to the first door.
And were greeted with an empty room. They split up as they moved along the hallway, each taking rooms on either side. It wasn't until the last two rooms on the hallway that they saw anyone. One had a woman suspended from the ceiling, fully bound. She was gagged and the look in her eyes was rather wild. When they opened the door, she started making noise behind her gag.
Sho stepped through and, with the help of Yamato and Kakashi, cut her down. They left Sho with her and moved to the last room in the hallway. This one had a man in it, bound to a bed, gagged like the woman was. His eyes widened when he saw them and cringed away from them.
Sakura approached him carefully. "Shhh. We're friends." She removed his gag. "Are you okay?"
He swallowed several times before speaking. "Just…get me out of… here. Please…"
She and Yamato untied him quickly and after healing his arms and legs to make sure he could walk, she hurried back out to the hallway.
They stepped out onto the main balcony. "Damn. Which way?" She asked Kakashi.
He glanced down at her. "I don't know. Left, I guess."
The first door was locked. Sakura glanced at Kakashi and crushed the doorknob in her hand, then pulled it out of the door itself. She handed the mangled metal to him and he stared at it a second. He passed it to Yamato and leaned back to him. "Remind me not to hold her hand during childbirth."
She glared over her shoulder at him, and pushed hard on the door, splintering it. And stopped dead.
"Stop her." She said, but was too late. Tenten had run into the room. Gai was tied to the bed in one corner, the skin of his chest and arms criss crossed with welts, his mouth gagged. Sakura hurried over to Tenten and managed to catch her in time. "WAIT."
Tenten turned on her. "Wait? WHY? We need to get him out of that! We--"
Sakura shook her. "You can hurt him if you move him too quickly."
That stopped her. "Oh."
"Let me." Sakura said and turned back to him. Careful to not touch his limbs, she worked the gag out of his mouth. "What hurts?"
Like the man in the last room, he had to swallow several times before he could speak. "Arms and legs numb. A…a…" He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "Anus abused. Welts on my…back, too. And my…" but it was too much and he closed his mouth. Sakura glanced down and saw the cage over his penis.
"Hold still. I'm going to untie you, first. Okay?" He nodded and Sakura and Kakashi worked to get him out of the cuffs. She glanced over at Kakashi. "Go after the nin. After I heal him, I'll be along." Kakashi nodded and he and Yamato took off.
Tenten stood back, staring at him. He looked awful. She wanted to run over and wrap her arms around him, but she was afraid to. Afraid of his reaction, afraid she'd hurt him. So she stood back next to Lee and watched as Sakura worked on him. They glanced at each other, neither of them ever having seen him in such bad shape before.
Lee had tears streaming down his face. "Tenten…is he…going to be okay?"
"Oh. Lee, he'll be fine." She smiled, putting on a brave face. "Sakura will heal him and he'll be okay." She wrapped her arms around him.
"Tenten." Gai called and she turned to him. He held a hand out and she approached slowly, pulling Lee with her.
"I…don't want to hurt you." She stared at the welts still covering his chest.
"I'll be fine." He took her hand and pulled her closer, wrapping one arm around her. He pulled Lee in and put his other arm around him.
She hesitated only a moment then carefully put hers around him. "God, I was so scared."
None of them noticed Sakura slip out of the room.
Sho approached her as she headed out to the balcony again. "Do you know which way they went?"
He pointed down another hall. "That way," he said, and together they took off. The stairs to the next level were at the end of the hall and they didn't hesitate as they headed down. As they came out onto that level, though, they stopped.
Kakashi and Yamato were standing at the end of the hallway looking down over the balcony. Yamato had released Mokuton and sent a branch over the balcony. Kakashi had one foot on the railing, kunai out.
Sakura and Sho glanced at each other and started down the hallway, but when they got close, she grabbed his arm. "Check the rooms, see if anyone else is stuck here. And be careful. I can't bring people back from the dead."
He glanced down at her. "Okay." He dropped a kiss on her and started checking room.
Sakura turned and took the last few steps to the end of the hall.
He looked like Sasuke. That was her first thought. That was ridiculous because Sasuke was dead, it couldn't be him. But when she looked closer, she realized that it was the pale skin, dark spiked hair and dark eyes that caught her. He was too tall for Sasuke. And he smiled. She shook her head.
What she did see, however, was the seal on his neck. That, even from a level away, was unmistakable.
Yamato had Mokuton wrapped around him, holding him in place, but Sakura rather thought that he just hadn't fought back yet. She pulled a kunai out. "I thought there was something familiar about the new…guest." Toshio said conversationally. "I remember now. He was that obnoxiously loud ninja. Always wore green?" He laughed. "He wasn't wearing much when I saw him. Maybe that's why I didn't recognize him."
Sakura glanced between Kakashi's face and Toshio. Kakashi has his headband up and the Sharingan eye open. His kunai was out and ready as well. "Time to go back to Konoha." Kakashi said.
Toshio laughed. "Right. Who's going to take me? You? Your tree hugger friend? Or perhaps the little woman?" He shook his head. "I'm not going back, thank you. They've never done anything for me. I'd prefer to stay here in my little club." He dropped the smile. "The only thing they ever did was ignore me."
Kakashi shook his head. "I don't believe that. They care about their ninja."
Toshio snorted. "Right. Oh, they brought me back, but then what? Shove me through a few tests, call me 'healed' and sent me back to school? That's care?"
"They didn't find anything. They were trying to do what they thought was best." Kakashi tried again.
"Bull shit. They never once asked me what he did to me. They never bothered to find out why I didn't want to be touched anymore! They didn't give a damn!" He put his hands together then and a spike of stone shot up out of the ground, breaking the Mokuton hold on him.
Kakashi and Yamato jumped over the balcony and Sakura followed them. They landed on the floor in front of Toshio, spreading out. Toshio just stuffed his hands in his pocket and shook his head. "It's no use. I'm not going back, you can't make me."
"What happened, Toshio?" Kakashi asked.
"Oh, like I'm supposed to believe you care? It's a little late for that, but I appreciate the concern." He chuckled. "But just for the sake of argument, maybe you do care. Fine. You want to know? He was a sick bastard. I wasn't the only small boy he collected. I wasn't the only one he controlled. He liked them." His smile was more than a little unhinged. "He used them. Used me. And when he'd used us up, he threw us away. You think your precious Sasuke was what he wanted? No, he wanted the Sharingan. He didn't give a damn about Sasuke himself."
Kakashi and Sakura glanced at each other. "I was there you know. When they brought Sasuke to him. I'd been hanging on, figured it was better than anywhere else." He shook his head. "I, at least, still had his attention then. But when Sasuke showed up, he ignored me, too." He chuckled. "Until Sasuke refused to give in to him. Apparently, he wasn't interested in being bed partners. Boy that pissed the old snake off." He sighed. "I left shortly after that. And now I have all this. People don't ignore me here." He grinned again. "They can't."
"If you won't go back, there's only one other option." Kakashi said, calmly.
"Yeah yeah. Death. I know what it is to be a rogue-nin. I've been managing just fine for a number of years." Toshio took his hands out of his pockets and Yamato sent another branch after him, but Toshio dodged it. "Please. Don't insult me."
Sakura was frustrated. She wanted to send a chakra-infused fist into the ground, but there was too much risk of hurting people. She had no idea how many were still in the rooms. She had to wait and hope that Kakashi and Yamato could come up with something instead.
Kakashi was tired of it already. He'd had enough of this damned club, enough of all of it. He felt bad for Toshio. Konoha didn't fail many, but occasionally, one of their own fell through the cracks. Obviously, this was one of those cases.
He glanced at each of his teammates, then lifted the kunai and ran in toward Toshio. He aimed a kick at his chest, but he was fast and dodged out of the way, landing behind Kakashi. He spun around to see Sakura aiming a fist at the nin instead. He dodged again and put his hands together, sending a column of rock up in her way and knocking her back. She rolled and landed a few feet away.
Yamato sent another wood tendril at him, this time sending him into the wall. He broke through it, jumping off of the wall, to land next to Kakashi again. He put his hands together, but Kakashi spun, and kicked out. He only knocked him aside, though and Kakashi nearly growled.
A kunai flew from Sakura's direction, but Toshio had covered his hand with the stone technique and parried it. She came at him again, her fist aimed for his back, but he slid under the punch, so she only caught his shoulder. He twisted and sent his rock fist into her. She hit the wall hard and stayed there, stunned.
Kakashi glanced at Yamato and the wood user turned and sent his Great Forest Technique out. The wood spread from his arm, splitting and branching out. Toshio shifted once more, but Yamato turned with him and caught him in the branches. Kakashi stepped forward then, and sent his Lightening Cutter down the length of the wood and into Toshio.
Yamato retracted the wood and the nin slumped to the ground. After checking for a pulse and finding none, they turned back to Sakura. She still sat against the wall. "Sakura." Kakashi said, kneeling next to her. He started looking over her, feeling for breaks.
She caught his hand and shook her head hard, looking up at him. "I'm fine. Or, I will be."
Kakashi closed his eyes and both men started breathing again. "I thought I told you to stay back."
She glared at him. "I saw an opening and took it. If it weren't for that damned stone hand of his, I'd have been fine."
Yamato pulled her against him and wrapped his arms around her. "Next time listen to him." He said quietly, his arms tightening. He let go when she winced.
"Sorry." She said, feeling her ribs. "I think I've got a few bruised ones." She closed her eyes and focused her chakra, moving her hand over the spot. "Yeah. Just bruised. I'll be fine." She looked over at the Toshio. "What about him?"
"Dead." Kakashi said.
"Oh." She frowned and looked over at him. "He looked like Sasuke."
"I know. Are you okay?" Kakashi asked.
"Yeah. More that I would expect." She shook her head. "Did you know that about Orochimaru?"
Kakashi shook his head and glanced at Yamato. "I was too young, I don't remember if he did anything to me. I don't think so, though. He was too focused on his DNA experiments then. I was little more than a test tube to him." He shrugged. "That's fine with me. If that's the kind of attention I would have gotten, I'm better off."
She stood up and turned to them. "I guess we need to go through the rooms, see what we can do."
"Yeah. This isn't going to be fun. How's your chakra?" Kakashi asked.
Sakura sighed. "I'll do what I can."
