Chapter 44
Two more weeks passed and Iruka didn’t see Garou again. In addition to watching the spiders Kakashi had figured out a way to tell when the seemingly chakraless ninjas were above them. He’d decorated the cabin with mistletoe claiming boredom. When someone walked overhead the dangling sprigs would sway. They made a game of seeing how to cross the room without being caught under them which led to birth of another game aptly called “Kiss Attack”.It was easy to forget the little objects overhead when you were busy so when one noticed the other standing or sitting beneath the mistletoe unaware they pounced. Kakashi, who’d always considered himself a serious individual, became rather proficient in the fine art of making fish lips and giving wet sloppy kisses using enough spit to make Bull proud.Slowly but surely they were able to gather more evidence against those they had identified as supporting the rebellion but the remaining benefactor remained elusive. There was only so much they could do in town now that they had established a set routine although they could tell something was brewing. They were being spied upon less and less; a fact which was not troubling except Manzo had also left them alone. They would see him, Shinsuke and Arisa in the village fairly often but there were no lingering hints of their familiar chakra at the cabin or lake but traces of their chakra were spread throughout the forest as if they’d been running at top speeds with it unmasked. During times of war low level teams were used to relay messages between base camps inside secure areas. Each night they would use a game of shouji to map the areas they felt it and the concentrations then compare it to better masked signatures they were able to detect. So far they’d unconvered a flow of information from the lake patrolled by Lord Kirihara’s men, Cobweb Fortress, Lord Washizu and Kaibara. They had reached the same conclusion. The third conspirator was a Kaibara resident. They would have to take another trip to the Giha Chasm to be certain but they were starting to belive Kaibara wasn’t just a convenient central location; it was the true hub.
Kaede couldn’t believe her luck. She was checking in on the Shibata’s one last time when Urui and Shishi walked into the store just as she was completing Daiichiro’s exam. She smiled and released the exuberant two year from her lap. He bolted from the family room and as she hoped made a beeline towards the open door.
“Woah little guy, where are you off too in such hurry?” Iruka asked scooping the sock clad child up before he could make it to the doors leading outside.“O’side! O’side!” The boy exclaimed wriggling in Iruka’s grasp until he realized he was being held by someone new. He stopped struggling and his eyes widened. He had seen the person enough times for him to be familiar instead of frightening but no one he knew had a line on their face. Iruka was able to crane his head back just as the fascinated boy reached for his scar while babbling in childish glee. The chuunin laughed and wriggled his fingers across the toddler’s nose, “Oh no you don’t. This scar is mine; you’ll have to get your own.”Daiichiro laughed and covered his nose with both hands. Iruka took the opportunity to tap the apples of his cheeks before resquiggling the imaginary line across the child’s nose when he moved his chubby little fist to cover them.“Are you causing trouble again?” Tomoko asked playfully as she waddled over and reached for her son.“Let me take him,” Kaede offered. “This healthy young man is getting close to the weight you should not be lifting. As a mother I understand it hurts to hear you can’t pick up your child as much as you want but it is better for the two you are carrying. Go have a seat and I’ll bring him to you.”Iruka took a good look at Kaede. There was a slight difference in her appearance and Iruka realized her face was rounder. He let his gaze dip lower, her stance was wider and the zipper on her vest wasn’t as high.He smiled softly at her, “Are you sure that you should be lifting this healthy young man Kaede-san? Tomoko-san, if you will allow me into the living area, I don’t mind carrying him. He reminds me of my little brother at this age. Maki was a very happy baby but he was always getting into something the moment our backs were turned. One summer we worked at a cherry farm and since he was such a stout little fellow we took turns strapping him to our back as we worked.”“I was returning to the picking station to empty my basket when I heard my mother and several others screaming and pointing behind me. I didn’t know what was wrong so I immediately looked over my shoulder at Maki. His head hung limply to one side and his clothes were bright red. We panicked. My mother took him from me and began tapping his cheeks while calling his name but he didn’t wake up.“My sister was about to run into town and get the doctor when one of the other women brought us a basin of water and a cloth to cool him. As soon as the towel touched him it also turned red. Mama washed his face and was relieved to see that there were no marks on his skin. Once it was clean she placed the towel back in the water and sniffed him. He smelled like cherries, but we all did so she licked his arm. He tasted like cherries too. It reassured us but we were concerned that he was still asleep.“I was starting to think that maybe I had accidently bumped his head against something. He woke up as she was washing him off. He smiled, gurgled and struggled to get out of our grasp so we were hopeful he had just eaten too much. My mother gave him to my sister and the two of us worked behind her to be certain. Do you know that little devil had found a way to use our reaching motion to boost himself upwards and break off the branches so he could take his time enjoying the fruit? And by enjoying it I mean eating and smearing it all over himself,” Iruka laughed.“Sounds like this little goblin,” Tomoko replied after instructing Iruka to set the baby in his playpen. She pointed towards a crate of assorted chocolates on the table, “We thought he was sleeping but this enterprising young fellow figured out how to get the crate open and was sampling candy. He opened all of the boxes but only four had bites taken out of each piece. We guess that was enough for him to discern the appearance of the ones he liked the best and only select them.“Now we have to figure out what to do with all this candy we can’t sell. Rui, would you like some? They’re smooshed but we have thrown out all of the boxes he spit the other candies back into,” Tomoko explained.Iruka looked back into the store at Kakashi. He was standing in the doorway with a hopeful look on his face - Hatake Kakashi one of the most feared jounin in all the five nations loved hot chocolate. He had earned his reputation at the expense of his childhood and had only recently discovered the simple joy of sipping the hot beverage while watching the snow fall or sitting by the fireplace. Iruka sighed but his expression as well as voice softened, “I’ll be happy to take a few boxes off of your hands.”“Growing up I always envied the rich children in the big houses. They were always so clean, just like something you’d see in a magazine. They didn’t have to work and had real toys to play with. Their parents never had to decide if they wanted to go to bed hungry so the children would have food in the morning. I never knew there were more lessons when school ended, they had toys but weren’t allowed to play with them. I didn’t know they were so pressed and starched to be perfect little show pieces or that most often than not business superseded family. There was no time for frivolous things like hot chocolate and storytelling.“It hurts to know he grew up with such structure, but I am glad I am the one who can show him these things and bring happiness to him,” Iruka said honestly.Tomoko placed her hand on her belly and uttered in astonishment, “You love him.”“I do, so very much. You are lucky Tomoko-san. I would give anything for Shishi and I to share such solid proof of our love,” Iruka replied while looking at her belly and smiling at Daiichiro as he climbed over the rails of his playpen, “but I am also glad that neither of us are women. I am sure that if we were we would have never gotten the opportunity to know one another.”Tomoko nodded, “I am fortunate, but so are you and Shishi. I grew up with my husband. I love him and I know Daiichi loves me, but there are times when I have doubts. I wonder if we married because it was expected and convenient. You two will never have that worry. You know what you gave up by choosing to be together.“Daiichi has gotten up in the middle of the night, left our warm bed to go outside to fetch snow then made me snow cream, but I wonder if he loves me enough to run away with me. Aren’t I silly?” Tomoko asked as she waved her son over to her.“No you aren’t silly,” Kaede replied. “It is human nature to test the boundaries of love.”“We gain security when we don’t find them,” she added slowly while staring at Iruka’s scar as he began to tilt his head side to side at the toddler. The Cloud ninja’s stomach began to flip as the new angle made everything clear. She placed her hand on her belly and excused herself to go outside for a bit of fresh air even though this sickening feeling had nothing to do with the child growing inside it.She accidently bumped against Iruka as she made her way out of the door. She rushed into the woods and threw up. It was faint, so very faint and it could very well have been her imagination but in that brief moment of contact she felt something familiar. It made all too much sense for her kind, loving and over-protective spouse to be so harsh and send her away if Rui was the child whose future was not to be determined. Ryuuko-sensei always said that if she were to become pregnant she already knew the name she would give her child regardless of gender: Iru-ka. Iru from the verb to be and ka the suffix used to ask a question. She would fight everyone in the village, father, brother, mother, for her child to be allowed to set its own course in life. Her child future’s would not be determined by anyone other than itself.Kaede rinsed her mouth with snow from a different area then slowly lumbered back to the store as if she were several months farther along in her pregnancy. Shishi was outside and he seemed generally concerned as he offered to help her up the steps. She was about to decline but thought better of it. If Rui was the child of Raijin no Ryuuko then Shishi was probably not who he claimed to be as well. Kakashi felt the medic’s chakra creeping towards him as he took her hand and placed the other on the small of her back to guide her up the steps. She was unfamiliar so even if she was able to detect some chakra, which he doubted thanks to Iruka sewing him up with chakra suppressors, she couldn’t identify him. He remained relaxed throughout the discreet probing. It reminded him of all the times he’d met one of his ninken’s pups; there was a strong curiosity as well as the desire to help. Once they were inside Kaede spoke, “I apologize Shishi, but I took advantage of your kindness and used the opportunity to examine you. The pneumonia is gone, your broken bones are still healing but your internal injuries are completely healed.”Her voice dropped even lower, “If he is careful and gentle, there is nothing physically stopping the two of you from making love.”Kakashi blushed. His cheeks, tips of his ears, forehead, fingertips and every bit of visible skin in between was bright red as he imagined Iruka inside of him. He had only been penetrated once and the violation had been so great he never allowed it afterwards. It was the other major reason he and Aoba had finally broken up. They had been together two years and every time they had sex he topped. The one time he tried to bottom Aoba ended up in the hospital. It wasn’t intentional; it was a reflex, Kakashi had given him permission but changed his mind when he felt Aoba’s fingers probing his entrance. It had taken him too long to remove them after Kakashi asked him to stop. They broke up a month later. Aoba could no longer deal with his lack of trust.Kakashi knew he didn’t have to worry about that with Iruka. If he said stop or even if he didn’t the chuunin wouldn’t pressure him. This wasn’t real life or a real relationship, this was a mission.“I see you’re excited about the prospect. You look like a virgin the morning of her wedding” Kaede teased.“I…ah…he…we…I…” Kakashi stammered after having his daydream interrupted.Kaede lifted his hand and discretely checked for the tell tale callouses all ninja possessed while patting it, “It is okay, I understand. I feel the same anticipation after I’ve been separated from my wife and husband. We have been married for a little over a decade but there are times I feel like a nervous newlywed when I am with them.”Kakashi looked at Iruka again; it was all too easy to imagine a decade eating his cooking, being yelled at, sleeping in his arms, waking up to him, and the two of them sharing a house with Naruto. Kakashi snatched his hand away as soon as he realized where his thoughts were drifting. This was a mission, this wasn’t real life. He wasn’t allowed those things in real life and the prospect of wanting them terrified him.He ran outside muttering, “I…we…air. Need air.”Kaede grabbed Iruka’s arm when he tried to run by her to catch Kakashi, “He is healthy but frightened. Give him a moment to collect himself. I just told him that so long as you are gentle and careful the two of you can make love. I am certain that after what he has undergone the prospect of having someone inside him scares him and to a certain extent he feels tainted and unworthy of you.”Iruka’s eyes widened and he glanced outside at Kakashi just as Manzô was coming through the door. He could tell by the way the man smirked he had heard what Kaede had said. If they didn’t have penetrative sex it could very well ruin the mission as he would loudly declare it was because the Copy Nin may be able to pretend to be gay but he’d never allow another man in his ass.Kaede took Iruka’s distracted state as an opportunity to further search his chakra. She felt a slight oddity and looked up in time to see something small and black scurrying behind his ear. This time she was sure; there were no longer any doubts in her mind the man before her was the true legacy of Raijin no Ryuuko. The little black thing she saw was a spider. When she and Darui married into Tetsuryuu’s family they signed contracts with each other’s summons. She could use the spiders but did not like too. After a dozen years it still gave her the creeps to feel them crawling over her skin and know they were always nearby watching. Her children did not share her apprehension and often wriggled about while giggling. They thought the little buggers tickled. But this person claiming to be Urui remained still as a statue as the creature scuttled over his skin. Just as Ryuu and every other adult Killer born into the clan, he did not flinch or show any other signs of reacting as it took shelter in his hair. She also saw the same coldness in his eyes when he glanced at Manzô and the kindness return once more as he looked at his lover. “Thank you for telling me Kaede-san. Do not worry about Shishi. It is I who is unworthy of him. I would destroy the very heavens themselves if they tried to harm him,” Iruka said with a smile before going outside to join Kakashi.Kaede took a deep breath, “Man-chan, take me to my dragon. I wish to feel my spouse beside me.”Manzô grumbled at the disrespectful way his younger distant cousin referred to him but he knew far better than to say anything. Kaede was weak in comparison to the he-woman she married and their lucky ass husband but she was far, far stronger than him. It would be safe to say she was one of the more powerful women born to the Nadare clan even if she had been born in Kumogakure and claimed Lightning Country instead of Snow as her homeland.
Once they were at the fortress Kaede walked up to her wife and punched her. Tetsuryuu’s eyes narrowed as she licked the blood from her lip, “My I ask what that was for?”
“You broke our wedding vow; that was simply my way of keeping mine,” Kaede explained as she stared down at the shorter woman. The anger left Tetsuryuu’s face and to the surprise of all around them she began to laugh. The vow they took in front of the Raikage on their wedding day was the same vow they took in front of their sensei when they became a genin team – “I will watch your ass and kick it myself if you don’t trust me enough to help you when you are about to do something stupid.”Ryuu stood on her tiptoes and kissed the tip of Kaede’s nose, “I am the luckiest woman in all the five nations.”“Yes, you are,” Kaede replied through clenched teeth. “I will give you severe menstrual cramps the next time you forget it.”Vettech91: Thank you so much for your kind words. Your comments about pacing made my day. I prefer the slower fics too but I believe that we may be in the minority. I’ve been working on this since 2010. Sadly none of it is planned or written in chronological order. It’s all “please plot bunny cooperate”, “Muse? Muse? Have you seen my muse?” You picked a great time to start reading (thank you).
My muse has wrangled the random plot bunnies cohesively and I’ve figured out the best way to get this story told. (Yay!)
MisatosPenPen: Happy, happy, joy, joy!! Indeed!! I’ve finally connected the elusive dots to get this story moving and figured out how I want to end this.
