Author's note: No, your eyes do not betray you, this is actually a new chapter already! Did I write this in one setting purely to prove to myself I could still update it within one month? Mayhap I did.
Can I promise a quick update like this again for the next one? Erm, the jury is still out on that one *shifty eyes* But hey, new chapter, guys! (Please focus on that, because I'm ridiculously proud of myself right now. This is what happens when you're sleep deprived)
Warnings: Dual pov (Deidara's and Sasuke's); takes place immediately after chapter 41; mentions of past torture; delving a bit deeper into the Uchiha's darker side; short flashback
I hope you'll like it!
Chapter 42
"So we were abducted because your husband fired two guys who couldn't act like normal people who're fired and instead of drinking their woos away, they decided that assaulting us and videotaping it to use as blackmail was an appropriate response," Naruto summarised blankly. "I didn't miss anything, right?"
"Right." Deidara winced, shifting uneasily on the hospital bed.
Both him and Naruto had been brought to the hospital to ensure they hadn't sustained any injuries during the time they'd been unconscious. Their blood had also been drawn to check whether they'd been possibly injected with some kind of drugs. Deidara didn't think that was the case, but Itachi was nothing if not thorough in making sure that his mate was okay, so Deidara had let his blood be drawn with only minimal protest.
Now they were waiting in a private room, waiting for their husbands to retrieve them once they were finished with the paperwork.
Deidara had made use of their time alone to inform Naruto what had happened after they'd both been taken away. To be honest, he'd had half a mind to keep Naruto in the dark, not wanting to have him panic unnecessarily, but Naruto had seen the two bodies – there was no way to spin a believable lie when his friend had seen the blood spattered wall with his own eyes.
That didn't mean he was looking forward to the rest of this conversation, however. While he knew about the Uchiha's other side, Naruto had remained blissfully unaware all this time, purely because neither Deidara nor Itachi had ever let something slip. Sasuke wasn't in the same business as Itachi to start with, so it wasn't as if Naruto could have heard something about it from him.
Deidara would have liked to keep this part of the family from his friend, but clearly that was no longer an option.
"Who killed them?" Naruto asked abruptly. His face was unnervingly blank, not giving anything of his real thoughts away.
For someone who usually showed his emotions freely, without restraint, it was incredibly unsettling to see him looking so blankly now. For the first time since he knew him, Deidara couldn't read him at all and that left him with a growing unease.
"Only one of them is dead, un. The other one's just unconscious," Deidara replied, although given the time which had passed between them leaving the apartment and now, it was likely that the guy had woken up by now.
"Fine, who killed that one guy then?" Naruto asked, smiling thinly. He crossed his arms; his whole form radiating tension as he leant against the edge of his bed. "Don't even try to tell me it was the police – there wasn't a single officer there when we left."
Deidara clenched his jaw. He didn't want to admit it had been him, because that would lead to a whole slew of questions he'd rather not answer – but the time of keeping Naruto in the dark was officially over now, wasn't it? No matter how much he wanted to, he could no longer keep the full truth from his best friend and brother-in-law. If he did, he had no doubt that he would lose Naruto's complete trust after this. Already the younger man was looking at him with suspicion lurking deep in his eyes.
Bracing himself, he took a deep breath and answered, "I did. I shot him with the gun I took from the first guy."
Naruto stared at him. "You shot him dead," he repeated slowly, looking like he was rolling the words around in his mouth, like he was testing out the sound of them. "I didn't know you could shoot."
"I learnt it. Years ago," Deidara said and shrugged stiffly. "Thought it might be useful to know, un."
"Useful," Naruto echoed and shifted his weight from one leg to the other. "All right. Fine. But that doesn't explain why the police hasn't shown up yet. Sure, it's self-defence but given what happened, they should have - "
"Itachi's going to take care of it, un," Deidara cut him off; unease growing in the pit of his stomach as Naruto's face darkened. "Don't worry about the police."
"You make it sound like Itachi's some kind of yakuza who knows how to make people disappear," Naruto said incredulously and he started laughing in disbelief.
When Deidara didn't immediately say something to refute his comment, the younger Omega abruptly stopped laughing and widened his eyes. "Itachi's a part of the yakuza?!" he said strangled and Deidara was quick to close the door before anyone in the corridor could grow too curious.
He was pretty certain Itachi had stationed some men on this floor to keep an eye on them, but better to be safe than sorry.
"He's not part of the yakuza!" he hurriedly denied. "He just has – some connections, that's all. But like I said, you don't need to worry about those guys, Itachi will make sure that - "
"I married into a fucking yakuza family!" Naruto laughed hysterically, slapping his hands over his face. "I can't fucking believe this! I had some suspicions before, but I never thought the Uchiha family is actually part of the yakuza! And I fucking married into it!"
"They're not yakuza!" Deidara snapped heatedly. "Our family just has a code they follow sometimes when things like this happen, un."
But Naruto ignored him. Lowering his hands, he asked flatly, "Is Sasuke part of this?"
Deidara licked his lips, debating how much he would tell him. "No, he isn't," he settled on saying. It was true: unlike Itachi, Sasuke had chosen to stay clear from that part of the family.
"How much does he know?" Naruto pressed, obviously not believing him.
"Just the bare minimum," the older blond admitted begrudgingly. "He knows about the code, but he isn't a part of it."
Naruto snorted and turned his head away; a complicated look passing over his face.
"Look, Naruto-kun, it's not like Sasuke-kun kept this from you on purpose," Deidara hastened to reassure him. "He's not interested in this part of the family at all, so he didn't want to - "
"Maybe, but it's this part of the family that landed me into shit today," Naruto said hollowly. "To hear that Sasuke kept this from me …"
"He didn't mean to, I'm sure," Deidara said helplessly, but Naruto merely pursed his lips and remained silent.
Leaving Deidara to fear that today's events had led to irreparable damage.
Throughout the entire drive home, Sasuke kept sneaking glances at Naruto, whose head remained firmly turned away as he gazed out of the window. He remained utterly unresponsive, which was a far cry from how boisterous he usually was and coupled with what had happened today, it only made Sasuke even more anxious to go home and finally be alone with Naruto.
Well, not entirely alone. Their four children were currently home, being looked after by their grandmother. Itachi had just popped over for a brief visit when he'd got the alert that Deidara and Naruto had been abducted.
"What is it?" Sasuke inquired curiously when he noticed how his brother's face increasingly grew darker as he checked something on his phone.
Dark eyes flicked up at him and Itachi made a miniscule movement with his head, indicating they should leave the kitchen. Growing increasingly concerned with his brother's odd behaviour, he left his four children to decorate the two cakes – well, Keiko mainly looked on, giggling and babbling randomly – and followed the other man into the corridor.
"What's going on, nii-san?"
"I had some of my team developing a whole series of apps," Itachi started, seemingly at random. "One of those apps acts as some sort of tracker even if the phone has been completely shut off."
"Okay, that sounds – interesting," Sasuke said confused. What did that have to do with whatever message Itachi had received just now? Or was it a text to warn him that his team had messed up with one of the apps?
He failed to see why that would be something Itachi thought he should know about.
"I had Deidara installing that particular app just in case," Itachi said and fuck no, Sasuke started to have a feeling where this was going and he didn't like it at all. Not one bit. "We agreed that he would only use it in case of an emergency." He turned his phone, showing a message stating in bold capital letters 'DANGER. IN NEED OF HELP'.
Sasuke swallowed. "Did he get into an accident?" he asked worriedly, already slipping his phone out of his pocket to check with Naruto.
When he opened the message thread with Naruto, however, he saw that his mate was typing something; three dots appearing in a bubble. The three dots kept floating there, but a message didn't come through. He frowned. It wasn't like Naruto to take this long to type a simple message.
"No." Itachi's voice pulled his attention away from his phone. "I think someone took him – and Naruto-kun most likely too."
No words – no matter the language – could describe the pure terror which had filled him after hearing Itachi uttering those dreadful words. He thought he'd known panic the day Naruto had given birth to Kiseki and Kenta and had to have surgery to stem the bleeding. That day paled in comparison to today's fear upon learning someone had taken Naruto from him.
He'd insisted on joining Itachi when the older Alpha had gone to his office to make a plan there with his team. He normally stayed clear from this side of their family, having been content to do so for years bar that one accident when he'd been a teenager, but this time he hadn't wanted to stay behind. Not when Naruto's life had been on the line.
It had taken them around an hour to pinpoint the location exactly and during that one hour Sasuke had come close to biting off several heads. He couldn't do much but wait for Itachi's team to do their part and for the first time in his life he'd actually regretted the fact that he'd turned his back to this side of their family. If he hadn't, then perhaps he could have done something as well, instead of merely waiting around and hoping they would find both men on time.
Hidan had just kicked in the door when a gunshot had rung through the room and for one long heart stopping moment Sasuke had feared they had been too late. On the edge of insanity, he'd almost started crying in relief when he'd rushed into the room to find both Deidara and Naruto still alive.
Aside from the chloroform, neither man had been otherwise drugged or injured and that knowledge was the only part tethering Sasuke to his sanity.
Naruto's silence and Deidara's meaningful look, however, told him that an uncomfortable conversation awaited him when they would arrive home. That didn't matter to him. He was just damn happy to be able to still have conversations with his husband, whether they would be uncomfortable or not.
"They already had their dinner and they're changing into their pyjamas now," Mother informed them when they walked into their house. She held a sleeping Keiko in her arms, but handed her over to Naruto as soon as the man held out his hands.
Naruto instantly enveloped their youngest daughter in his arms, pressing soft kisses on her forehead and murmuring things too low for anyone to hear while he made his way into the living room.
Sasuke and his mother watched him go and she turned towards him with a concerned look. "How is he?"
"Deidara killed one of the two and knocked the other one unconscious," Sasuke said and pursed his lips. "I think he told him about – the other side of us."
Mother looked weary at once; faint wrinkles marring her forehead. It was easy to forgot how old she was most of the time with how young she still looked, but moments like these showed she wasn't that young anymore.
"I suppose it was naïve of us to assume we could keep this side from him forever," she murmured and sighed, resting her hands on her hips. "How did he take it?"
"He hasn't said a word to me yet, but judging from Deidara's face – not that well." He pressed his lips together, wondering just how much his brother-in-law had told his mate.
A hand on his elbow had him looking back at mother, who smiled softly at him. "No matter what, you love each other," she said. "He might be upset now, but you'll be fine."
"I don't know," he said almost inaudibly, unwilling to admit that he feared this might be the breaking point between them.
They had survived the loss of a child and had persevered when Haruno had attempted to pull them apart – but would this revelation be too much for Naruto? What if this was something Naruto wouldn't be able to handle? What if Sasuke walked into the room and Naruto told him he was done?
"You've been married for so long already, give him some credit, sweetheart," she smiled faintly, pressing a sweet kiss on his left cheek. "He might need some time to digest what happened today, but he's not going to leave you. He loves you too much for that; even a blind person can see that."
"I hope you're right, mother," he sighed.
"Of course I am." She raised an eyebrow. "When have I ever not been right?"
He had to concede she had a point there.
"What's going to happen to the man who survived?" Her eyes and voice grew noticeably cooler.
"I don't know. Itachi hasn't decided yet."
She nodded and slipped on her shoes, smiling absently when Sasuke helped her into her coat. "No matter. I'll ask him later," she murmured. "Take care of yourselves. I'll see you soon."
"Bye, mother."
Not even a second after the front door closed, Kiseki appeared on top of the stairs, dressed in her pink nightdress and her hair in two pigtails. "Storytime, papa!" she demanded; her twin brother hovering a few feet to her right.
"Grandma already told you a story," Kei chided her, padding on bare feet to her. He'd come from the direction of the bathroom and was dressed in blue striped pyjama trousers and long sleeved shirt with the Batman logo printed across his chest.
"Yeah, but papa hasn't," she pointed out primly and looked at Sasuke imploringly. "Papa? Kenta and I want a story."
Sasuke sighed and in spite of the events which had transpired today, he found himself smiling and relaxing, at ease now that he had both his mate and children with him.
"All right, fine. Why don't you get into bed already and I'll be right up to tell you a story."
Kiseki cheered, bouncing up and down a couple of times, and Kenta smiled, allowing his sister to drag him to their room.
"We put the cakes away in the pantry," Kei told him before his gaze drifted towards the living room. "Dad okay?"
"Yeah, he is," Sasuke reassured him, but didn't elaborate.
For a moment it looked like his oldest son would ask more questions, but then he just nodded and smiled, murmuring a good night before going into his bedroom.
"I'm going to tell the twins a bedtime story," he informed Naruto, resting his hand against the doorjamb.
His husband sat on the couch, his arms still full with Keiko, who was half awake and mumbling something in her baby language.
"Sure," Naruto murmured, not sparing him a look at all.
Sasuke checked a sigh and made his way upstairs. They would talk once he'd put the rest of their children to sleep.
"Naruto," he called out softly once he was downstairs again.
Naruto was still looking down at Keiko, who'd fallen back asleep by now; her head cradled in the crook of his arm. "You know, it wasn't until I was at the hospital that I realised how close I'd come to never seeing any of you again." His arms tightened slightly around Keiko and his breathing hitched.
Sasuke was next to him instantly, sinking down next to him on the couch before he could even contemplate whether that was the right move to make now. "But you're still with us," he said urgently. "You're here."
"Yeah." Naruto took a deep breath and rose up. "I'm going to put her in her crib and then we need to talk."
Quietly Sasuke nodded, trying – and failing – not to think of how ominous those words sounded. When had that particular comment ever ended well for people in a relationship?
But he had to believe in them, had to trust that his mother was right and that this wouldn't be something that would end up ripping them apart.
He wouldn't let it rip them apart. They had come so far already – this couldn't be the end of them.
"I'm going to ask you a question and I need you to be completely honest with me," Naruto began when he was back in the living room. "And I mean complete honesty now – I'm done with lies and half-truths." He sounded incredibly tired, but there was a fire burning in his eyes nonetheless when he finally raised them to look at Sasuke.
The Alpha nodded his acquiescence. Whatever Naruto needed, he'd give; there was no point in remaining secretive anymore anyway.
"Have you ever been involved with the – other side of your family?" Naruto grimaced as he said it and he clasped his arms around himself.
It didn't escape Sasuke's notice that the Omega was one, deliberately keeping distance between them and two, referring to the Uchiha as 'your' and not 'our' family. He told himself that didn't have to mean anything in specific, except that Naruto was feeling rattled now. And who wouldn't after the day he had?
"Not involved per se, but I was a witness once," he admitted after a pause.
"Witness how?" Naruto questioned warily.
Sasuke didn't like remembering that particular afternoon, nor did he like talking about it, but he had promised to be completely truthful. Naruto had asked that of him and he would give him that.
"You remember the reason I became a doctor?" he asked and Naruto nodded, a tad confused. "Well, Nagato wasn't exactly thrilled when he'd heard what the doctor had been trying to do when Konan had been in labour."
That was probably an understatement. He had known the older man for a long time, but he'd never seen him as furious as the day his wife had gone into labour and had been initially denied help because of her Omega status. Nagato's anger was the cold kind, one which had the ability to freeze an entire room and make the other person involved question all their previous life choices.
Nagato didn't become furious easily, but when he did …
"They took the doctor away and Itachi dropped me off at home. I was curious however and I had been listening to the conversation between Nagato and some other men, so I knew where they were bringing the doctor," he went on and stood up as well, unable to remain seated any longer. "I wanted to know what they were going to do, so I – sneaked out of the house and went to the address."
He closed his eyes for a moment. He could remember all too well the blood curling scream the doctor had emitted during that confrontation, together with the sight of blood spurting into the air, colouring the concrete floor red.
"Itachi was there, together with Nagato, Kisame and Kakuzu," he said flatly. The scene was playing off in front of his eyes, as if he was watching a film. "They'd been roughing up the doctor, demanding his apologies. When he refused to give that, Kakuzu suggested they would give him something to be sorry about. He produced a long knife."
Naruto's mouth dropped open; his eyes widening in shock.
Sasuke forced himself to go on. "The guy wasn't stupid; he pretended to be sorry and bowed down repeatedly, but then he suddenly stole Kakuzu's knife and stabbed him with it."
"Holy shit," Naruto whispered aghast, clapping a hand over his mouth.
"I'd kept hidden until then, but Kakuzu was bleeding a lot, so I quickly went over to them and used my shirt to stem the bleeding," Sasuke continued monotonously. His shirt had been so drenched with blood in the end that he had just thrown it away instead of trying to have it washed. He didn't think he could have stand to wear it again after that night, though.
"What happened to the doctor?" Naruto asked nervously.
"They hacked off all his fingers so that he would never be able to perform his job again," Sasuke answered blankly. He didn't think it was necessary to add that they had also cut out his tongue so that he would never be able to degrade Omega again.
"Shit," Naruto said faintly, sagging down on the couch as if all the strength had suddenly left him.
Cautiously Sasuke sat down next to him. "That's all the involvement I had in all these years," he said firmly. "Aside from that, I never had anything to do with that side of our family and I'm never planning on entering that business either. You have to believe me."
"I believe you," Naruto said wearily. "But … How can I be so sure that what happened today won't happen again? This time it was only Deidara and me, but what if our kids had been with us? Will I have to constantly look behind my shoulder, wondering if any of Itachi's enemies are going to try to take revenge on us? I don't want to have to be afraid every day that our children might be in danger all because some psychopath thinks he needs to get back at your brother!"
"You won't have to be," Sasuke swore and grasped both his hands. "This was an anomaly. Itachi told me he would never let anything like today happen again."
"And you believe him?" Naruto eyed him sceptically, but he wasn't trying to pull away from the Alpha's touch.
"I know that when my brother promises me something, I can trust him to fulfil that promise," Sasuke stated. He and his brother might have had their differences in the past, but he had never once thought he couldn't trust his older brother.
If Itachi said he would never let anything like today happen again, he wouldn't.
The blond looked away for a moment, seeming to gather his thoughts. When he gazed back at the dark haired man, his eyes glowed with determination and defiance.
"I don't care if that side is some sort of family tradition," he spat, "but our children stay out of it, you hear me? I won't have them hearing about this or god forbid even joining that 'business' when they're older!"
"They won't," Sasuke promised. "I don't have anything to do with that side of our family and I was never planning on telling our children about it either."
He didn't know whether Itachi and Deidara were ever planning on introducing their children to this particular business, but that was their decision. From the moment he'd known Naruto was carrying his child, he'd made the vow that none of his children would ever get to know the darker part of the Uchiha clan.
He loved his family, but there was no way he would ever introduce his children to that side. Their hands would forever stay clean.
"Good," Naruto said and then Sasuke suddenly had his lap full with his mate and his mouth caught in a fierce kiss. "I need you," Naruto whispered when he pulled back; his eyes shining almost too brilliantly. "I need you to erase them from my mind."
A flash of pain crossed his face before his features grew slack and he moaned when Sasuke bit down gently in his Mark.
"I will," he promised, intending on making sure that by the end of the night Naruto would only remember his touch.
He waited until his mate was fast asleep, too worn out from their lovemaking to remain awake any longer. Once he was sure Naruto wouldn't wake up immediately, he slipped out of bed and pulled on his boxers before making his way downstairs in the dark.
His phone was charging on the kitchen counter and the screen lit up when he removed the charger. It started to rain softly as he scrolled through his contact list.
He picked up almost immediately. "Yes?"
"I want to be there when you take care of that guy," Sasuke spoke coldly; the fingers of his free hand curling like claws around the edges of the counter.
Fury, which had been lying low for the past couple of hours, flared up again, fuelled by his need for revenge. He wanted to make that son of a bitch pay.
"You're sure?" Itachi asked softly. "It's not going to be pretty."
Sasuke smiled thinly. "I'd be worried if it was."
"In that case – you're free now?"
AN2: A lot of you wanted to read more about the Uchiha's hidden side, so here it is :D I actually have half a mind (well, more than that to be honest) to continue this part in the next chapter - any interest in that?
Please leave your thoughts behind in a review; should you spot any mistakes, please point them out to me.
I hope to see you all back in the next chapter!
