Chapter 42
The next few days didn’t make things any easier for Kakashi. They woke, Iruka cooked breakfast, Kakashi washed dishes. They’d go fishing, and gather intel at Mama-san’s while eavesdropping on the loose lipped Snow ninja using a jutsu created by children. They would also spend time with the poorer citizens reading and writing letters for them and teaching them how to do so themselves which helped them to learn which of the upper class denizens of Kaibara were part of the conspiracy.
Kakashi was able to infiltrate a few of the richer families by becoming a math tutor for some of their children. Servants like children see all, hear all and repeat all unfiltered especially if they don’t fully understand what they’ve witnessed. People, especially those of high status, tended to disregard those of lower strata. They thought nothing of airing their dirty laundry in front of those who clean their dirty laundry.Kakashi himself was guilty of that.Neji and TenTen had approached him offering to trade a jutsu they’d invented for chidori lessons. Neji wanted to know how to concentrate his chakra to improve his jyuuken. TenTen wanted to use the information to boost the amount of chakra she put into her weapons so they could rip through any type of barrier and not be deflected. Gai was his friend but if he had to make the decision again he’d teach them chidori, rasengan, and how to never pay for a meal again in exchange for the jutsu to tune him out. Each day Kakashi was forced to admit he’d severely overlooked underestimated the friendly chuunin. His area of expertise was the battlefield and tactics but Iruka was a genius at interpersonal relationships. All of those non-standard but highly effective information gathering methods were Iruka’s ideas. He had often wondered why the chuunin spent so much time with the village’s children and why Sandaime spent so much time with him. He had always thought that Sandaime used his crystal ball to discern who among his soldiers was in danger of breaking. After seeing Iruka’s “I smile and you reveal your secrets” technique he wasn’t so sure. The part which made it so mystifying was that Iruka wasn’t approaching these people with an ulterior motive. Yes, they needed the information from the unknowing but observant townspeople but Iruka listened just as closely to complaints about bunions as he did to which houses admitted strange men with funny headwraps.Kakashi wished he known this Iruka well enough to trust him back during his Anbu days. He obtained access to Sasuke’s files when the last Uchiha was placed under the watchful eyes of the mother hen. Weeks before the Uchiha massacre one unnamed teacher in training mentioned the normally happy boy had become withdrawn because his beloved older brother had stopped making time for him as part of his daily summary. That same unknown assistant eventually became a fully accredited teacher whose notes mentioned Sasuke’s further withdrawal from his peers and recommended placing him under the guardianship of the Inuzuka Clan. They were loud, boisterous and possessed none of the formality of the quiet, reserved Uchihas. They were also extremely accepting, loving, and protective of all those within their walls; everyone from the oldest human to the youngest pup would have ensured Sasuke never felt alone and knew he was still loved.Kakashi had seen the man’s handwriting enough to know the two words behind the seals Sandiame burned to hide the instructor’s identity were undoubtedly Umino Iruka. He had never felt the need to look at Naruto’s files. He watched over his sensei’s son as one of many anonymous shadows but now he planned on pulling them as soon as they returned to Konoha. He was willing to bet the prank that introduced Naruto to Kiba and the punishment that introduced him to more of the famous Inuzuka trackers was staged by Iruka. Even he had never heard of a meat flavored chew toy that squirted harmless pink dye.
Kakashi was already in bed when Iruka came out of the bathroom completely naked, carrying a bottle of oil, “Are you asleep?”
“If I say yes, will you take advantage of me?” the jounin asked appreciatively.“It’s not taking advantage if it’s freely offered,” the chuunin retorted. “Will you put this on my back? I have dry skin and this cold weather isn’t helping.”“So does that mean the unbridled passion in my heated gazes aren’t the reason you’ve been squirming?” Kakashi teased as he pushed back the covers.“No, but that cheesy line just did something to my stomach,” Iruka replied sitting on the bed between Kakashi’s legs.Kakashi picked up the bottle of oil and paused. Most ninja were comfortable showing skin, sharing bathrooms and bathing with each other were standard occurrences since there was often very little privacy on missions. He and Iruka had kissed and touched but the simple act of Iruka trusting him enough to completely bare himself and turn his back felt far more intimate.Kakashi poured the oil in his hand and rubbed them together to warm it before slathering it on Iruka’s back. When he brushed the area over the scar Iruka shivered. “Did I hurt you?”“No, my back has always been sensitive. Since the injury was so close to my spine it’s gotten… waahaahah,” Iruka arched his back and squealed when Kakashi laid his forehead on his shoulder and the jounin’s breath tickled the area.Kakashi wanted to kill Mizuki for his treachery and would have done so if Ibiki had not stopped him. The T&I chief owed him several favors and the privilege of questioning that particular prisoner had squared every single one of them. At the time Kakashi had been so enraged someone had dared to frame his sensei’s son, attempted to kill him and revealed what was inside of him that he had given no thought whatsoever to the man who’d risked his own life save him. He now knew he should have gone with his instincts, ripped out Mizuki’s intestines and feed them to him. A few centimeters and he would have never gotten the chance to know Iruka.“Shishi?”Kakashi looked up to see Iruka’s head turned around to face him. He took the opportunity give him a quick peck on the lips then jerked back blushing when he realized what he did, “I…ah.”“You’re blushing,” Iruka smiled shyly and kissed him back. The kiss was equally chaste and Iruka’s cheeks were also red. He stared at Kakashi briefly then slowly turned away so Kakashi could continue applying the oil.Once Iruka’s back had been evenly coated Kakashi brushed his fingers over Iruka’s scar again. “I never thanked you or properly apologized. Some gifts are too precious to even joke about breaking. I realize that now and understand why you were so angry. I should have-”Sensing Kakashi was about to blame himself Iruka was quick to interrupt him, “Don’t be stupid. I saw crystal. You saw eggs. Eggs reach their full potential after they are broken. No one can dictate where an eagle’s wings will take it at the time it hatches.”Kakashi pondered Iruka’s words as the chuunin rose and walked across the room to retrieve his pajamas. He waited until Iruka was lying beside him to ask, “Do you really mean that or are you just saying it to placate me?” “:Hiashi once said that to me about Hinata. I don’t advocate breaking children to unleash their potential or Hiashi’s harsh parenting methods but I admit I have difficulty knowing when to let go of my students. I put so much into teaching them but yet I can’t see when they are becoming the adults I’ve prepared them to be. I want to always keep them safe so they’ll never learn that life can be so very ugly.:”Iruka moved closer to Kakashi began to whisper to him, “I was a child Kakashi when what happened to you happened to me. I wasn’t the only one, but I was the only one without parents. I wasn’t even Naruto’s age. I kept thinking they have parents; people who will notice they haven’t come back. No one will notice if I’m missing. No one will come for me.“My children know that I will miss them and no matter the circumstance I will come for them when they are in danger. Even if it kills me, they know the very last breathe in my body will go towards ensuring they get home safely,” Iruka rolled onto his back and stared at the ceiling. He blinked a few times and sighed before switching to sign language, “:I was on a mission the day Sasuke defected. I learned what happened and who had been sent to retrieve them so I went after them. “:Tsunade says I am the first person to ever break out of Katsuya. Marin, that’s one of Anko’s snakes, says no one has ever been able to go so far after receiving a dose of her venom. You and that incident taught me that my babies were no longer children. They survived the chuunin exam, they survived Orochimaru’s minions and Naruto survived Sasuke betraying him. If the things I hear are true, Sasuke survived betraying Naruto as well. Betraying and being betrayed are part of becoming adults.:”“I know these things but they are my children. I still can’t bring myself to cut away the apron springs and fully let go of them,” Iruka whispered rolling over to smile sadly in his direction.“:Iruka, do you think letting go of them means handing them a mission and taking a report?:” Kakashi asked finally getting to the bottom of why he and Iruka had so many misunderstandings.“:Well yes, most teachers don’t have much contact with their former students,:” Iruka signed.“That’s is your problem:,” Kakashi signed while snorting, “:Letting go doesn’t mean denying you know them and cutting all contact. It means trusting them and believing they are able to use the things you, their parents, and other teachers taught them to survive a mission. Besides I think you would have a more difficult getting them to let go of you. Do you know how much me, Asuma, Kurenai, and Guy, had to hear ‘Iruka-sensei this, Iruka-sensei that, or Iruka-sensei said’? We thought the jounin that had students who’d passed before ours were exaggerating about wanting to kill you.:”“:We had it all planned out then Kurenai saw Naruto chasing Konohamaru and screaming for you to stop him. He was so loud she’d thought his voice belonged to an entire class of students. It made her realize that if we killed you, we’d never stop hearing him yelling abou it unless we killed him too. Around this time I realized that Ino was just as loud as Naruto and we’d also have to listen to her or kill her. Then Asuma realized that his nephew was just as bad as Naruto and Ino so we’d have to kill him. If we killed Ino we’d have to kill Inoichi or go missing nin so we just decided to teach them something so awesome they’d forget about you. It was starting to work then this whole thing with the Chuunin Exams came up and I lost Naruto to an even bigger pervert.:”“: It took me three S-rank paychecks to buy enough liquor to get some of the jounin who worked at the academy to tell me ways to deal with Naruto without performing a permanent silencing jutsu on him. I changed his diapers but you’re his favorite teacher. Asuma tells me there are embers of karma within the Will of Fire and you were paid back with interest three weeks after getting rid of Naruto. His nephew Konohamaru was placed in your classroom. Apparently the anklebiter worships Naruto. Naruto worships you. He sees you as some type of god he must face to prove himself worthy.:”“Kami help us,” Iruka groaned. Kakashi laughed while pulled the covers over his chin to mimic a beard and in between signs brought his fingers to his lips as if smoking a cigarette, “:Moriko was ready to feed her own precious baby boy to that pack of aggressive carnivorous chimpanzees she summons after he decided to model himself after Naruto. Give it time, he and his little crew will be far worse than Naruto. We’ll see how great Iruka-sensei is then.:”“: I’ll tell you something else, for all that Neji goes on about fate he admires the devious and sneaky. You’ll have a fan for life just from what I’ve seen on this mission. Hanabi too, she wants to be just like him. Or Sakura for that matter, I’ve seen her at the Academy working on her bedside manner. She’d be even worse than Tsunade if she didn’t get practice worrying about scaring children.“:If you think you can be cut out of those kids lives you’re crazier than I thought you were. I sincerely hope you don’t think that is possible. I’ve seen how many genin, chuunin and young jounin wait in line to talk to you. They want to hold onto you just as much as you want to hold on to them. If you truly believe that letting them out of your sight means you no longer care I have a hot springs in Suna I want to sell you.:” Kakashi inhaled slowly and exhaled, “:Sandaime always told me I had problems holding on. I let go too easily. Aren’t we a pair?:”“Cherries,” Iruka replied verbally.“What?” Kakashi asked.“Cherries. Pears tend to separate when harvested even though they may have grown in pairs. Cherries are the only fruits that remain in twos when snatched away from the trees in which they were grown. We’re a pair of cherries,” Iruka explained.“Really?” Kakashi asked suggestively, “Is that why I distinctly remember you popping mine.”Iruka groaned.Kakashi laughed, “Hey you were the one who started the pun. Don’t be mad at me for stealing it.”Iruka leaned forward and kissed him, “You could never steal anything from me love. All that I have is yours freely given.”“I am so glad, otherwise I’d be walking around naked, but you’d like that wouldn’t you?” Kakashi teased as he detected the approaching ninja seconds after Iruka.“Walking around naked, laying down naked, cleaning naked, dancing naked,” Iruka added kissing him again.“What no cooking naked?” Kakashi asked.“Nah, you could burn something I don’t want you to. While do love seeing you all oiled up and heated, hot and greasy just isn’t the same,” Iruka smiled.“What about all wet and steamy?” Kakashi asked rolling his hips forward.“Are you trying to convince me to make love to you in the shower again?” Iruka teased as he returned the action and tweaked one of Kakashi’s nipples.“Yes,” Kakashi squeaked as the chuunin lowered his head and began sucking it.They continued to kiss and touch long after they no longer felt any overhead chakra signatures. When they were close Iruka rolled onto his back and pulled Kakashi on top of him. A few thrusts later the entire mess was trapped between their stomachs.“Let it dry a bit first,” Iruka advised wisely as he held Kakashi tighter, “It will be easier to clean up”.“You do realize we can get stuck together?” Kakashi asked settling against him.“Sounds nice; I wonder if we’ll be able to get discounts on movie theater tickets?”“Please do not say two for one special,” Kakashi groaned.“Nope, I was thinking one for one because you are the only one for me.”An “aww” and “why don’t you tell me things like that” being whispered overhead made them realize their error. All of the ninja were not gone. Their standard guards had been traded for two who were extremely good at suppressing their chakra.Kakashi’s eyes widened and Iruka shook his head while making an open hand gesture over his face. He hadn’t known they were there either. Kakashi laid his head on pillow beside Iruka. With an enemy they could not detect, their mission had just become a whole lot harder.
Iruka closed his eyes and began making lazy circles on Kakashi’s back as he tried to search for what was different about the area. It was a locating trick the teacher that he did his student teaching under had taught him. Ninja were accustomed to looking for large bits of chakra and the absence of chakra while tracking enemy movement. Children were full of mischief but their small chakra systems had very low outputs. The standard method didn’t work so memory and the other senses had to be relied on to detect their presence.
Iruka had fully integrated Kakashi’s biometric signature and began the series of questions: Was something out of place, did something feel off, look off, smell funny, smell different, have no smell at all? Was it noisy, too quiet, the incorrect sounds for this weather and time of year?Little did he know, Kakashi was doing the same thing. He had been a child when he learned to track and this method was the least stressful on his developing chakra system. His father had taught him to listen, smell, and look but his mother had been the one to teach him the questions to focus his observation and conceptualize to find the extra presences, locate what was missing or out of place. She had then gone farther teaching him that if he found something out of place to consider where it could have come from and in the absence of a clear find to consider where could it have gone. She called them coconut bread lessons. As much as his three year old self would have liked, coconut bread did not disappear into thin air. No matter how carefully he ate it evidence was always left behind. It could have been crumbs, a dirty dish, a smell or smudged fingerprints but something no matter how minute was always left behind. His mother had also taught him the quickest way to get caught was to be perfectly still and quiet while pretending to do nothing. He quickly signed against Iruka’s side, “:The only way for them to have gotten above us so quietly without noticing is for the stork to have dropped them.:”Iruka giggled at the ridiculousness of the notion but Kakashi’s odd comment gave him an idea. He looked in the corner of the cabin. Both the webs spun by his spider and the one Tetsuryuu had given him were empty. He shifted lifting Kakashi slightly as he glanced around the room checking places a small spider would hide from a larger one. Tetsuryuu’s spider was beneath a chair pushed properly beneath the table. His was nowhere to be found. All summons feed on their contractor’s chakra and all human interaction left some traces of chakra. Spiders were not social creatures by nature and tended to avoid each other’s territory if possible. For them to go into hiding meant these contractors, while members of the Killer clan had little to no interaction with Tetsuryuu otherwise they would have been able to detect the trace elements of her chakra signature and would have felt comfortable in the larger spider’s presence.Iruka tapped Kakashi’s shoulder, “:Your stork theory wasn’t far off base. They were placed on the roof by their summons. When we go fishing tomorrow lay back as if you are ill and try to find the broken branches or signs of the path they traveled. We’ll stay in town a bit longer and try to gather information.:”Kakashi nodded then said, “Rui, my love as much as I enjoy being with you, this dried mess on our stomach is starting to itch.”Iruka slid to the edge of the bed and fully sat up so that Kakashi was in his lap. Kakashi squeaked when he stood up and yelped, “I can walk!”“I know you can my love but if you were to do that, I’d have to let go of you,” Iruka replied smoothly as he carried Kakashi to the bathroom and turned on the water for a shower. Not certain if these ninja had altered the roof so they could see what was beneath them Iruka purred, “Shishi my love, once the water is warm I think we should play search and rescue. I know what we just did but I want to see every inch of you.”Kakashi inhaled deeply and nodded. They’d only been in the restroom a brief time but now that he knew they were there he could hear the ninja on the roof sliding down the side of the building. He stepped into the shower and extended a hand to Iruka, “Instead of search and rescue why don’t you just hold me my love?”Iruka pretended he did not hear the slight quiver in Kakashi’s voice or notice he was starting to shiver even though the room was warm. He washed Kakashi and held him the same way he had the first time they took a shower together. Only this time when Kakashi pressed his penis against his hand the jounin nodded he was sure.Kakashi pressed his lips against Iruka’s and licked the code for “they might still be watching us” on the roof of his mouth. The clear confirmation that Kakashi was indeed in his right mind and thinking of the good of the mission was all Iruka needed. He wrapped his hand around Kakashi’s penis as the jounin gripped his and moaned, “Oh yes baby” while rolling his eyes upward to show he understood.Iruka made sure to announce they were finished to give the ninja searching the cabin time to escape, “That was fantastic. Let’s get cleaned up and get back in bed – this time to go to sleep. We have a long day ahead of us if we want to pay off Shibata-san in time to move before the spring thaw.”Kakashi was even more uneasy once they got back into bed. There were faint traces of chakra everywhere. He didn’t know if their ruse worked and the ninja weren’t a concerned with suppressing their chakra while searching the cabin of civilians or if they had left those small amounts knowing it would be just enough to raise the awareness of another ninja. He curled up around Iruka and asked, “Tell me a story. Make it one about something I don’t know about you.”Iruka began stroking his back, “You know I don’t like maze gohan but I never told you why. My father left his village in a hurry and he always regretted leaving his grandmother. We were often harassed by cowardly ninja who though the group we were traveling with only contained a bunch of hapless civilians. Father would always chase them away.“He was always sad when came back but he would gradually cheer up again after being around us. When we asked why he would always tell us that a man’s duties are not easy. First and foremost a man must do whatever was necessary to protect his family; even if he finds it unpleasant he must perform his duty. Our smiling faces reminded him that it wasn’t a chore to protect his family. We were a gift from the heavens. It was a privilege to care for us and the strength to be able to do so was a double blessing.”“Each time he’d chase a group away he’d come back upset but one day he came happy. These ninja carried plans to attack his home village. He decided to use the battle as a distraction to go get his grandmother. He was gone for almost a month but he left his ninja animals to look after us. We were worried something had happened to him even thought he assured us that so long as they were there he would come back. The group leader had said we needed to move since it was dangerous to stay in one place for so long but my mother refused. Everyone but us left and two days later my father returned. He was tired and thinner than when he left but he was smiling brighter than we’d ever seen and there was this strange little old lady on his back. He introduced us to her as Granny. My mother said we should call her Great-Grandmother to show her proper respect but she refused to answer to anything else.”“Granny was everything I’d ever hoped a grandmother to be. She spoiled us and told us stories but we were afraid of her cooking. She was going blind and her other senses had also begun to dull due to old age. Papa said she was once a terrific cook. Most of the simple meals she prepared were delicious but we never knew what we were going to get with mazegohan.”“Yuzu, rice vinegar and sake were interchangeable. She would confuse black sesame seeds with peppercorns, basil and mint for shiso, salt for sugar, regular oil for sesame oil, mild peppers for hot ones. Food was precious so no matter what she mixed up we had to eat it. She got it right one time. The rice was perfect and she used the correct seasonings. I ate two helpings of it. She died in her sleep that same night.”“Her last words to me were, ‘I wanted to see the smile on your face after I showed you that sometimes when things get haphazardly thrown together they turn out all right.’ I can’t look at a bowl of mixed rice without seeing her face and thinking of that,” Iruka confided. He continued talking even though Kakashi had already fallen asleep, “Do you believe in fate, Shishi? People thought Granny had powers of divination and she would often tell me I would share my parent’s fate but not their destiny. As a child I wondered what that meant. I still do in many ways. “It also scares me. My father died young. Our family loved each other very much but we were separated so early. Sometimes I think that is what she meant. If I am in a optimistic mood I take it to mean I will also find a great love but the two of us will be together until we die of old age. Doesn’t that sound nice? Dying of old age knowing it won’t be long before you are greeted in heaven by your loved one and the two of you will be together for eternity,” Iruka murmured as he fell asleep.
MisatosPenPen: I did put up two chapters. I’ve managed to get my muse and free time on the same wavelength. I am glad you liked the scene in the club. Owl was just waiting to get his. I’ve been working hard to get to this point to resolve what happened to Kakashi’s primary attacker.
Daga: Thank you so very much. It makes me so happy that you enjoyed the reread. I feel all warm and fuzzy because as a reader I know how much I have to like something to want to read it again.
Wickedsinn: Thank you so much. I tried to write this fic from the aspect of falling in love. It’s not a lot of grand declarations, which are important, but also a mix of the little things you appreciate each day. I am glad to know it’s working.
