Author's note: Many, many apologies for taking so damn long with this chapter. I know I promised an earlier update, but I severely underestimated 1) how busy I would be with university and 2) how difficult this chapter ended up being to write. I knew what I wanted to happen, but for a long time the chapter just wouldn't cooperate (obviously). But I finally managed to finish it as you can see. I hope I still have readers left for this … *winces*
PAY ATTENTION TO THE WARNINGS!
Warnings: Deidara's pov; set quite a bit in the future (around one year after Keiko's birth); scene leading up to sexual assault; violence; character death; drama; suspense; attempted blackmail
This is a rather dark chapter, so please heed the warnings.
I hope you'll like it despite the monumental lateness and the rather dark theme of it.
Chapter 41
"Man, how long has it been since we went out without our husbands or our kids?" Deidara groaned, stretching out his arms.
Naruto squinted at him. "Definitely before Keiko was born, so that makes – last year? At least. It could be longer."
"Damn, has it really been that long, un?" Deidara whistled impressed. No wonder he felt a bit weird now without Itachi or his sons.
"Yeah, I think it was even before I found out I was pregnant," Naruto mused, mangling the straw of his vanilla milkshake between his teeth. He might be thirty-six years old now, but he still hadn't learnt not to chew on his straws.
"That was during that firework festival, right?" Deidara shook his head in wonder. "We're definitely in need of this then, un. Is Sasuke-kun okay with you leaving the kids in his care?"
The younger Omega snorted amused. "Oh yeah, he's definitely okay with it. He's been so busy lately that he hasn't been able to spend much time with them, so he's taking advantage of that now." He grinned; fondness colouring his eyes. "I believe they were planning on making a cake, so there's a chance I'll come home to a completely destroyed kitchen later on."
"Well, at least there'll be enough hands to clean up the mess, un," Deidara chuckled. "And hey, as long as the cake tastes good, right?"
"That remains to be seen," the younger Omega snorted, plucking the straw out of his cup to down the last bit of milkshake. Clearly he didn't have much trust in his family's ability to make a good cake.
After paying for their pastries and their drinks, they left the little restaurant. It had started drizzling when they'd still been inside and the footpath had darkened a tint; a sheen of rain covering the leaves of the flowers and the parked cars. The chilly February wind had them both shivering slightly, stuffing their hands in the pockets of their jackets.
"Any place in particular you want to go to, un?" Deidara asked, thinking privately that it felt a bit weird to be out without his kids or Itachi for once. It really had been too long since he and Naruto had last spent time together without anyone else.
Sidestepping a couple linked arm in arm, Naruto answered, "Well, a new exhibition opened in the art museum last month. I've thought about checking it out, but I didn't have the time before. You interested?"
"In art always," Deidara grinned. He retrieved his phone from his pocket as they turned the corner into a quieter street, leaving the hustle and bustle of the main street behind them. "Let me text Itachi really quick to let him know my phone will be off for a bit in case he needs to call me, un."
"Oh! That's a good idea!" Naruto exclaimed and pulled out his own phone from his pocket as well.
They passed two men loitering in a small alley, Deidara paying them not any mind, too busy with texting his mate.
That was his mistake.
"There you are."
The male voice sounded way too close behind him, raising the hairs in the back of his neck, and he quickly turned around. Next to him Naruto whirled around as well, equally alarmed, but they were too late.
A small cloth soaked in something foul and sharp was slapped across his mouth and nose before he could do so much as yell out. He stopped breathing immediately, but a fist slammed into his stomach, making him gasp painfully for air, breathing in whatever was soaked into the cloth.
His mind growing fuzzy, stifling the anger and panic trying to get the better hand, he got a look at two men standing in front of him, both of them having dark blue hair and wearing grim smirks. Before darkness completely swallowed him, he pressed his thumb down on one of the apps in his phone, hoping desperately that he'd selected the right one.
Then everything turned black.
His head was pounding something fierce when he regained consciousness again and for a while, he just kept his head down, surveying the room from underneath his eyelashes. Wherever those two men had brought them, the room was completely stripped, bare of everything save for the chairs he and Naruto had been dumped into; their hands bound behind them. His friend either wasn't awake yet of feigning unconsciousness, though Deidara doubted the latter.
Naruto would have a hard time being still if he was indeed awake. The older man couldn't decide whether he was glad Naruto was still unconsciousness or not. At least still out of it would save Naruto from whatever those two men were planning. Maybe. Hopefully.
Swallowing with some difficulty, Deidara raised his head a fraction, trying to spot a door or even a window. There was a door to his right, he discovered, a crack running down the middle of it as if someone had repeatedly kicked it. There was also a window, but it was both too high up and too small for either of them to fit through. Shit.
He forced himself to think back to that moment on the street, hoping the focus would let him ignore the panic which was steadily growing again, threatening to take over. He couldn't start panicking now. It definitely wouldn't help him; it would only cloud his mind, something the headache was already doing a mighty fine job of.
They had been walking past an alley, he recalled, both of them too occupied with their phones. There had been two men there, waiting for them, he realised now, feeling ill. He hadn't got a good look at their faces, but they both had straight, dark blue hair. He didn't know anyone with that particular hairstyle, at least not that he immediately could think of, and he wondered why the hell they had taken him and Naruto.
Clearly they had been waiting for him – them? – given the comment one of them had made before subduing the both of them. But why? He hadn't got into any fights with someone in years, at least not to the extent that they would go as far as abducting him.
For a brief moment, he toyed with the idea that Haruno might be behind this, but no. She was still serving her sentence and she didn't have that type of connections. She couldn't be the one behind this. Her beef was with Naruto and Sasuke, anyway, so even if she had the necessary connections, she would have gone after Naruto alone.
With Haruno ruled out, though, that left him with no other possibilities. Was this just a coincidence then? Them being in the wrong place, at the wrong time? No, again that wouldn't explain that man's remark. They had been waiting for them. No random abduction then.
He wiggled around carefully, pressing his lips together when he couldn't feel his wallet nor his phone. Of course. Anyone with even half a brain cell would make sure they removed the phone from their victims. He could only hope that they had simply tossed it into another room and hadn't completely destroyed it.
If his phone had been destroyed, there was no way –
Some wooden floorboards outside the room groaned and he froze, dropping his head immediately down again, feigning unconsciousness.
The door opened and two sets of footsteps walked leisurely into the room; the rustling of their clothes loud in the stifling silence. They paused a couple of feet away from Deidara; he could feel their eyes piercing the top of his head, but he refused to even twitch.
"We know you're awake," one of them said amused. "I didn't use that much chloroform on you."
Deidara still refused to move; they were bluffing. He'd barely moved since he'd woken up and there were no cameras in this small room.
The man sighed and there was the sound of one of them walking away, opting to go to the other side of the room – where Naruto was. He grew cold.
"You can play pretend all you want," the first man informed him bored. "In the grand scheme, it really doesn't matter which one of you will help us, but I figured you might not want your pretty friend here to suffer for your husband's mistake."
Gritting his teeth in helpless anger, he gave up his pretence and raised his head, glaring at the man in front of him. Whatever those two sons of bitches wanted, they had to leave Naruto out of this.
The man nodded approvingly. "Yeah, thought so. You Uchiha are really damn loyal to each other, aren't you? Even the bitches who marry into that damned family."
"Who the hell are you and what the fuck do you want, un?" he asked flatly, stretching his fingers behind him carefully. They hadn't thought to use handcuffs, only rope, so perhaps he could …
"You don't know who we are? Well, I suppose I can't expect you to know the people who do the grunt work for you," the man said mockingly. Blue eyes darted over to the other man who looked eerily similar to the first one, saving for the smirk. Twins then. "But it doesn't matter who we are. We're not planning on sticking around for long after this. As for what we want – easy, to get back at your husband for the stunt he pulled."
Deidara stared at him. Itachi had had dealings with those two? What kind of dealings? Wait, grunt work – were these two employees of Itachi? If so, why would they do this? They had to know that Itachi wouldn't be able to forgive them for this.
The man leaned casually back against the wall, crossing his arms. "You see, your husband not only fired us, but he made sure that we would never be able to find another job in his sector ever again." His dark eyes burned with fury this time and he visibly tightened his jaw; the dark circles underneath his eyes amplifying the darkness in his eyes. He seemed to struggle for a bit but then he inhaled deeply and the smirk was back on his face. "Not only that, but he made sure he fired us in the most humiliating way that was possible. It's only fair then that we get back at him. An eye for an eye so to speak."
Suddenly Deidara knew who these two were. "You were fired because you were planning on selling the company's secrets to his rivals! What the fuck do you think was going to happen, un? That Itachi would be happy with that?" he sneered. "Be glad he didn't do anything worse than firing you!"
He remembered the day Itachi had fired them. That had been four months ago and the Alpha had arrived home pissed off that night. It had taken Deidara a couple of hours of needling him before Itachi had told him he had to fire two men that day after one of their tech guys had discovered those two had been in contact with two rival companies and had promised them valuable, highly sensitive information.
The only reason why they hadn't suffered worse punishment than being fired was because they hadn't been able yet to transfer any data.
"See, my brother and I don't see why we should be happy with the humiliation he forced on us," the man smiled coldly. "But you're right, he could have done worse, like getting rid of us entirely, I suppose. Because of that, we're going to play on the same field."
"What do you want." His insides grew cold at the sight of the twisted, cold grin appearing on the man's face.
The blue haired man retrieved a small camera from inside his jacket and held it up. "We're not monsters, so we're not going to kill you," he said nonchalantly and his brother snorted quietly. The man threw him a quick grin before continuing, "But we can't let your dear husband think he can just get away with humiliating us like that. So we're going to make a nice little video of you putting that pretty mouth of yours to use. Then we're going to send a copy of that to your husband and ask him to pay us a nice amount of money." He grinned wider. "Unless of course he wants the video to go viral; then everyone gets to see just what kind of whore he married. Not something that will reflect well on the family name, I assume."
"Like hell am I going to do that!" Deidara spat enraged. "You can go fuck yourselves! You come near me with that and I fucking bite it off, you hear me?"
The man clucked his tongue and shook his head, lowering the camera a bit. "I guess I didn't make myself clear. This video is going to happen, no matter what. But it's your choice whether it's going to be you or," he pointed at Naruto, who was still unconscious, "him. Neither my brother or I are terribly fussed about who it's going to be. Either one of you will do just fine. He's the bitch of that little brother of your husband, isn't he?"
The leer he threw at Naruto filled Deidara with utter revulsion.
"I have to say, those Uchiha men really do have some fine taste, you know?" the man went on lightly, considering Naruto thoughtfully. He grinned amused. "A thing for blonds, though, huh? Really similar taste, those two brothers." He turned back to Deidara, quirking an eyebrow. "So who's it going to be? You or your pretty friend there? I'm sure your brother-in-law will do just about anything to make sure nobody gets to see the video of his precious husband doing it with another guy. Man, the shame that will bring down upon the family …" He smirked darkly; his eyes gleaming.
Filled with a degree of revulsion and hatred he'd never experienced before, not even when Toneri had been about to assault him all those years ago, Deidara could do nothing but glare hatefully at the other man, who just smiled brighter. There was no way he was going to get Naruto mixed into this shit. The thought of even touching that arsehole had bile rising up, burning his throat; his insides twisted and knotted together.
He didn't want to do this, didn't want to be here, didn't want to give that son of a bitch any sort of blackmail at all. But if he didn't do this, they would go after Naruto. Naruto, his best friend, who was only in this situation now because Deidara had invited him. If he hadn't suggested going out with just the two of them like before, then Naruto wouldn't be here now. He wouldn't be unconscious, unaware he was about to be assaulted for something he had no part of, for some petty revenge two bastards wanted to extract on Deidara's husband.
Naruto didn't deserve that. If keeping him safe meant giving in to those fucktwits … He had no choice then. He would let them use him if that meant they would leave Naruto alone. He would give them what they wanted and afterwards … They would pay.
"Itachi's going to kill you when he finds you," he promised bitterly.
The man grinned, his eyes lightening up with glee when Deidara gave in. "If he finds us, which he's not going to," he said confidently. He pushed back the right side of his jacket and Deidara froze as the sight of a gun greeted him. "Just to make sure you don't get any ideas in that pretty, blond head of yours: you try anything and I shoot you and my brother shoots your friend," he said bluntly.
The man's brother pulled his own gun free from inside his coat and without saying anything, he just simply aimed it at Naruto's head and looked flatly at Deidara. The Omega looked away, understanding the message all too clearly.
"I thought you weren't going to kill us, un?" Deidara spat.
"We're not planning to, but we also know we can't trust any Uchiha, whether you're one from birth or whether you married into that clan," the man said cheerfully. "So just consider this as a precaution. Now, let's start, shall we? Don't want to keep wasting any daylight and all that bullshit."
As he approached Deidara, he tugged down his zipper and shoved his jeans down a bit, exposing himself. "See, I'm even making it easy for you and didn't wear any underwear," he grinned lecherously. He pressed on a couple of buttons on the camera and aimed the lens straight at Deidara.
He grabbed a fistful of blond hair and shoved Deidara's head forcefully closer to his groin, making the blond man almost retch in disgust. He looked anywhere but at the man's dick, even as he stepped even closer to him.
"Let's find out how you've been keeping Uchiha entertained for all these years, hm?" the man said, already breathlessly. "Come on, wrap those pretty lips around me, baby."
He only had one chance.
As the man coaxed his head closer, Deidara twisted his right hand, the rope fell down, leaving burn marks behind in its wake, and quick as a snake, Deidara snatched the gun out of the guy's pocket. The man shouted, dropping the camera and making a grab for the gun, but with his hands free now, Deidara was quicker. He rammed his shoulder into the bastard's guts and jumped up, slamming the butt of the gun down harshly on top of the guy's head, putting all his strength into it.
The man crumpled down onto the ground, but Deidara didn't stop to check whether he'd killed him, whirling around with the gun still in his hand when he heard the other man snarling, "You fucking bitch! We warned you!"
Naruto.
Everything seemed to happen in slow motion next. He saw the man aiming his gun at Naruto, pulling the trigger at the same time the door to the room suddenly banged open, Itachi and Sasuke spilling through it.
BANG!
The noise of the single gunshot reverberated through the room, bouncing back and forth between the walls. Blood sprayed the floor and part of the wall, painting streaks of sickeningly dark red.
Everyone froze.
Breathing shallowly, quickly, his ears ringing, Deidara lowered the gun and watched with empty eyes how the other man sagged down against the wall; his white shirt blossoming red, the same colour dripping down the corner of his mouth. His dark eyes had already turned glassy by the time he was completely slumped down.
He'd killed him.
For a moment nobody stirred, then Sasuke called out frantically, "Naruto!" and shot past Deidara, past the maybe dead, maybe just knocked unconscious first man and the second dead one, paying them no mind at all. He quickly set about freeing his mate, patting at Naruto's cheeks and talking to him to get him to wake up.
Deidara started violently when Itachi suddenly appeared in front of him, blocking his view of the two brothers. Wide-eyed he stared at him, parting his lips. "I – I killed him," he said numbly; his gaze falling down onto the gun still clenched in his hand. "I – killed him, un. He was – he was going to kill Naruto and I couldn't – I couldn't let that happen. I couldn't let him kill Naruto. They were – they were going to rape us, v-videotape it and they were going to use it as blackmail. Itachi, they were going to blackmail you, us! I couldn't – I didn't - "
"It's okay," Itachi spoke in his low, soothing voice. Slowly he reached out and took the gun out of Deidara's limp hand. Calmly he handed it over to Nagato, who took it over with a disinterested face before he knelt down next to the unconscious man and started discussing something in low voices with Kisame.
Hidan was here too, Deidara dimly noticed; the other man surveying the dead guy with interest.
"Itachi, I killed him," Deidara whispered, looking down as he curled and uncurled his fingers.
"I know, he deserved it," Itachi said simply and pulled him into a hug, sliding his arms around Deidara's back. "I just wished we'd got here sooner, so that you didn't have to do that."
"You found us." Deidara could cry from relief, clutching Itachi's coat and greedily inhaling his scent; letting the familiar, warm scent soothe his frazzled nerves, letting it wrap around him, forming a shield against the outer world.
"Of course I did. You did so well, using that app," Itachi praised him, rubbing his back and Deidara melted into his embrace; relief at being back into his mate's arms making his legs weak.
"Wh-what's going to happen?" He started shivering, though he didn't understand why. He wasn't cold, not whilst wrapped up in Itachi's firm, warm embrace. He could never be cold with his husband offering him warmth.
"I'm going to take care of everything," Itachi simply replied.
Somewhere behind them, Naruto could be heard asking what was happening in a woozy tone, Sasuke crying out in relief.
Deidara swallowed back a sob; Naruto was okay. They were both going to be okay.
His legs abruptly gave out and he sank down to the floor, Itachi following him down, not releasing his grip even once.
"I'm going to take care of everything, don't you worry," Itachi whispered, kissing his lips softly.
Deidara nodded, closing his eyes and pressing his head into Itachi's shoulder, completely exhausted all of a sudden, but knowing he could trust Itachi to take care of the rest now.
Itachi was going to take care of it, like he always did. Itachi would make sure everything would be all right; just like he always had done and would continue to do.
Everything was going to be all right.
Itachi was here and he and Naruto were going to be okay.
That was all that mattered.
AN2: So yeah, this took quite a dark turn, but I figured it was time I expanded a tiny bit on the hidden side of the Uchiha family. I've been giving hints before about the Uchiha's other side, what's one more hint, right? *sweatdrops*
Do I still have readers left for this? *winces* Well, if so, please leave your thoughts behind in a review; should you spot any mistakes, please point them out to me.
As for the next chapter, I leave the choice up to you: do you want me to expand some more on the Uchiha's other side (the chapter would be what happens after this one then) or do you want some other prompt, something more light hearted? (I wouldn't blame you if you wanted that, after this chapter *clears throat*)
I see you all in the next chapter!
