Chapter 3: Life in the Tunnels
The corridors were filled with countless twists and turns. Everything looking identical. It was easy to get disorientated, even for a trained ninja. For a while Sarah thought she was going the right way, since all she had to do was back track from places she’s been. She thought it wouldn’t have been that hard to find her way back, but she soon found herself lost in the maze of tunnels.
"Arg! Where in the hell am I!?" she screamed. She continued walking, soon coming up to a door. She knew it wasn't her room, but she was going to enter it and hopefully find someone who could help her.
Opening the door, she stumbled upon a large room. Looking to be much more lavish than the others, but not overly so. No one was inside. There was a full size bed covered in black sheets. It was connected to a row of cabinets along the back wall. A dresser rested against the middle of another and on either side of it were two double candle sconces. A rectangular rug with a simple pattern that reached out from under the bed. Purple curtains were pinned up, draped along the walls just below the ceiling. The room itself was composed of wooden panels, all except for the floor.
Sarah was in complete awe at the bedroom before her. From the appearance of the room, she had to assume it was Orochimaru's. She couldn't imagine anyone else having a room this fine. It was even better than hers. Glancing around, her eyes narrowed, deciding she would do something. He had snooped on her, so it was only fair to return the favor.
She started with the drawers. Carefully going through them trying to find something, anything. The first couple drawers were nothing but clothing. The third drawer revealed some interesting 'treasure'. With a gasp, she pulled out two old photos. One was in a broken frame while the other was loose. The lone photo was of a child. From the hair and pale features of the face, she had to assume it was him.
"Orochimaru as a child?" she whispered. She then stashed it into her robe before looking at the framed photo. It was a photo of three kids, two boys and one girl with a man with brown hair and a goatee standing behind them. One of them matched the same boy in the previous photo while the other boy had a crude, white colored hairstyle, and the girl was blonde.
"His Genin photo." Her eyes widened. These three were all three legendary Sannin as children. Not wanting to get caught, she tucked it back into the dresser and left the room, making sure nothing else was disturbed. Finding the photo actually satisfied her curiosity, for now at least.
As she made her way down the hallway, a noise caught her attention. Not wanting to be seen by anyone, she hid around the corner just as she heard someone coming. Sasuke emerged from the shadows. Unlike when she met him, he was wounded and bandaged up.
She could remember how the Uchiha teen treated her in front of Orochimaru and knew the snake nin didn’t like it. Judging by his wounds, they had to have been made by Orochimaru during training. If that were the case, the Sannin didn’t hold back from breaking the skin.
Sarah slid her father's trinket into her robe and clamped a hand over her mouth as she saw Sasuke limp by. She could hear him muttering something under his breath, but it was too low for her to make out the words.
He stopped for a moment thinking he heard something, but soon continued on his way. This wasn’t like any training he had before, though not the first time that drew blood.
Once the boy was out of sight, Sarah released a sigh and came out of her hiding spot. She thought she was about to be discovered when his eyes went in her direction.
After wandering around for a while longer, she was still very much lost. It was then she noticed the candlelight reflect off of something shiny at ground level. It was a small garter snake that had slithered up to her. It gazed at her for a minute, flicking its tongue, looking harmless.
With one glance at the snake, Sarah felt like screaming, but was too drained. It wasn’t like she was afraid of snakes; it just startled her. "How the fuck am I to get back to my room!?" she snapped, not realizing the snake would understand her. "This is so frustrating!"
The snake turned, looking back at her again, seeing if she'd follow it.
Sarah continued to stare at the snake, not sure what to think. She remembered how the snake in Orochimaru’s throne room was harmless without his command, and this snake was too small to do anything dangerous. Taking a deep breath she stepped closer to the snake, feeling embarrassed that she was looking for guidance from the slithering creature.
Knowing she would follow, it slithered down the hallway in the opposite direction. After a few minutes it reached a door where it stopped.
"What?" She glanced at the door. It looked a bit familiar. Opening it, she saw it was the room she originated in.
"Thank fucking god!" she cried, going into the room. Ignoring the snake, which slithered away. She went over to the dresser. Stopping, she noticed for the first time a mirror stood against the wall. She looked at her reflection in the dim light; disgusted for finding herself in the predicament she was in.
Remembering the photo, she pulled it out of her robe and looked at it again. She traced a finger over the innocent features of the face, having a hard time believing how cute Orochimaru was as a child. He didn’t look like he was capable of doing the horrid crimes that the snake nin was accused and responsible for. What surprised her more though was the photo was nearly 50 years old, and he actually had a copy of it.
Not wanting to think about it anymore, she opened a drawer and slid the photo inside before closing it. Reaching her hands up, she pulled out her family’s heirloom, setting it on top of the dresser. That was now all she had left of her parents.
"Daddy," she said to the trinket, releasing a tear. "I'm sorry I wasn't a better kunoichi."
Wiping the tear, she turned away from the dresser, feeling tired. There wasn’t anything else for her to do so she decided she would try and get some sleep in her new unwanted home. She was about to get in bed when there came a knock at the door. Wondering who it was, she went over to answer it, only to have a familiar face peek around the door.
"I've come to wish you good night."
"Kabuto," Sarah replied, opening the door further letting him in.
He took her invitation and entered. As he did so she moved away. He shut the door behind him. Kabuto noticed she stopped to stand by the bed. From her posture, he had a feeling she had something to say. Being silent, he allowed her a moment, giving her time to say it. She didn’t like being there and that was obvious.
"I just have one question. How the hell am I supposed to be able to know how to find my way back to my room? Everything looks the same. It took me hours to get back here. I have no idea what time it is and I haven't eaten anything since before coming here."
He smirked, fixing his glasses. "It takes some getting used to, but I do have something for you. I meant to give it to you earlier, but it slipped my mind." His hand reached around to his back and pulled out a scroll from his pouch. With a few hand signs, it started to glow blue. He then handed it to her. "You can use this. It will point out where all the rooms are. Sasuke used it when he first got here as well. As for food, I figured you'd be hungry." He turned away, opening the door before pulling a cart of food into the room.
Sarah stared at the scroll, showing her signature and even his in one corner. She then looked up to see him bring in food. He rested the trolley near the bed. "It's not anything hot, but it will suffice. I know you love sandwiches."
"It's fine," she said, taking a sandwich to eat while sitting on the bed. "So Sasuke is the last of his clan? I had heard a story some years back of a great clan with a kekkai genkai and were slaughtered by one of their own, leaving only one child left alive. When I went to make my case to the Hokage about joining forces, three years ago, which by the way was when we crossed paths the first time, I learned the Uchiha clan were from the Leaf." She frowned. "But the Hokage was killed by Orochimaru so I had to leave and tell my people the alliance wasn't going to happen."
"Sasuke left the Leaf about three years ago. He sought out my Lord for more power, to avenge his clan. Even if it means going up against his own brother."
"Ouch. That's harsh," Sarah cringed. "So his brother did it then?" She was still mad he lied to her and she was extremely mad at Orochimaru, but there wasn't anything she could do about it.
She continued to eat her sandwich before picking up a second one. He slid his hands into his pockets. "Yes. Itachi Uchiha, who is now a member of the Akatsuki."
"Akatsuki?" Sarah blinked, looking up. "I'm not sure if I ever heard of them. I don't recall that name." A thought then popped in her head. "Any chance they could have killed my father?"
"It's possible. They have done a lot of killing in the past." He took out another scroll, this time from his pocket. "If this helps." Rolling it open, he showed her several pictures of all Akatsuki members as well as their wanted posters. All in matching black cloaks with a red cloud pattern. "This one is Itachi," pointing him out.
Sarah looked at the man. It showed him with red eyes. "I can see the resemblance. He looks like Sasuke. Guess he's the older brother. Poor kid. He watched his family die by his brother. Is that why he's such an ass?" Even with that knowledge, she still didn't like him.
Kabuto chuckled under his breath. "Wouldn't surprise me."
Sarah shook her head. "Well that would explain a bit on his sour attitude and why he's demanding. But really, did he have to insult me like that?" She handed him back the scroll. "So if you wanted to make sure I was fine, why did you bring that?"
Taking it back, he put it away. "Orochimaru asked me to study it," he explained. "The Akatsuki have been giving us trouble lately."
Just then the garter snake, who had guided Sarah earlier, slithered in from under the door. It looked at Kabuto, getting the medic's attention. He glanced at the snake then back to her, not knowing the snake had helped her earlier.
"My Lord is calling for me. I have to go." going to the door. The snake followed, disappearing from sight.
Sarah nearly jumped when she saw the snake appear suddenly. Pointing at it, she squeaked. "That snake helped me find my way back here! That is the second snake I've seen."
Turning back briefly. "They don’t call my Lord the snake ninja for no reason. Besides his attacks and appearance, he can also communicate with them." Knowing he had to hurry before his lord became upset. "Good night, Sarah," he said before exiting.
"Oh..." She still didn't know what that meant. Why did the snake find her to begin with? She looked up to her friend. "Goodnight... B... Kabuto..." She wanted to call him by the name she knew him as, but that wasn't his real name. The room fell silent. The shadows seemed to have gotten darker from it getting so late.
With a yawn, Sarah felt extremely tired. From everything happening so fast, it had exhausted her. Covering up the remaining sandwiches so they wouldn't spoil, she then climbed into bed, holding the robe tight around her. She didn't know what else to wear since her clothes were gone, and no one said anything about other clothing. With a sigh, she settled into the blankets.
-
Leaving Sarah's room, Kabuto followed the snake to where his master waited. To his surprise, he was being led away from the throne room and back towards his own lab.
"You called for me, my Lord?" Kabuto greeted upon entering.
"Yes." Orochimaru turned to face him, he had been looking through Sarah’s file. He was still shamelessly satisfied in how he dealt with Sasuke. Hopefully the boy wouldn't cause any more trouble regarding their new guest. "I want you to retrieve anything of importance from Sarah's belongings. Take this storage scroll. It should prove useful."
"Of course sir. I can leave now." Most of his work was done for the day, including tending to Sasuke's wounds from his brutal training session with Lord Orochimaru. The teen had been in a foul mood ever since meeting Sarah.
"Good. Stay on the side of caution. I don't like their leader, and he's probably looking for her." His smirked faded, turning to a frown. "Don't want to deal with him... just yet."
Orochimaru had heard many things about the leader of the Village Hidden Underground, and none of them were good. Some of those rumors were about Sarah and that alone disgusted him. "By the way, did you ever get the village leader's name?"
"Yes, my lord. His name is Akuro," Kabuto answered, pulling out one of his chakra enhanced ninja cards to reveal what was known about him. There were a few times he had to speak with the man and each time, Kabuto felt like there was something off putting about him.
Orochimaru sneered at the name. "Even his name sounds wary to me."
"Sarah has settled in to bed for the night," Kabuto informed him. "She has no idea how much time has passed."
"With everything that has happened today, she needs her rest." He wanted to smile at her naivete, but knowing about Akuro left him in a foul mood. He had only retrieved her earlier that day, not long after breakfast. He was sure they already learned of her disappearance.
"Go. Before it gets too late. I want her things to be here by morning if possible."
The village was actually directly on the border of the Land of Rice Patties and another country, which was separated by a mountain range. The village was located in a rural area and was independent under the rule of the village leader, Akuro Uzo.
"Yes my lord," he said again. Bowing, he took his leave. He had every intention of getting the task done exactly as his Lord requested.
-
Leaving the safety of the Sound Village, Kabuto, disguised as an Underground shinobi, made his way across the country to the border. It only took Kabuto two hours of travel to reach the main entrance of the village. The entrance was dimly lit, looking more like a dreary cave. Going approximately 50 feet from the entrance was a gradual sloped, spiral path, leading down into the depths. The outer edge was stone lined while the center was open, leaving a black hole. However, upon reaching the very bottom, the center was composed of large boulders. The trip down would take nearly 15 minutes to reach the bottom.
Once he arrived, Kabuto was faced with a large opening, leading to an entire civilization. Except for the fact it was many miles underground, it reminded him of places throughout the world. There were trees, grass, and houses. Everything you'd see in a typical town. Even the lighting tricked you into believing you were outside, except it was all artificial lighting created by chakra. Being careful, he inconspicuously made his way through the village until reaching Sarah’s family home.
The house had been ransacked prior to Kabuto's arrival, but nothing in Sarah's room had been touched yet. It did appear as though someone started but didn't have an opportunity to finish. This meant someone could return at any moment. Hurrying but remaining quiet, Kabuto took out the scroll, whipping it out onto the floor. He then went to the dresser, taking what he could from what was on and inside it. He placed the items on the seal within the scroll.
After getting several outfits gathered, noises were heard from the next room. Kabuto had ran out of time. Making hand seals, the clothes suddenly disappeared in a puff of smoke. He then rolled the scroll back up. Accessing his surroundings, trying to find a means of escape.
Unlike above ground, there were no exterior windows, only a false view of an outdoor night scene. Believed to be the only way out was through the bedroom door. Something caught his attention near the virtual window. Upon further inspection Kabuto found a secret hatch. Getting through it wasn’t going to be a problem, but ensuring that it wasn't discovered could get tricky. As the sounds drew closer, he made quick work of opening it. He slipped inside without making too much noise. With one last glance around Sarah's former room, he pulled the screen back down behind him and closed the hatch, just as someone entered.
Not paying attention to what the intruder was saying, Kabuto didn’t want to stick around in case he was discovered. He made his escape through a tunnel, with the sealed scroll of Sarah's belongings, secured in his gear pouch. He suspected the tunnel was a back way out, which could also lead to another way out of the village undetected.
He wondered what sort of usage the passage was meant for. There were drawings on the walls that seemed very old. Historians probably would be able to decipher the art. He imagined the tunnels were used a long time ago when a great disaster occurred. The survivors could have come down from the mountains and settled in a cavern underground, creating their own village.
Not having the time to examine the hieroglyphics, Kabuto hurried to the exit. Finding himself on the side of a mountain. This completely surprised him. Looking at the mountain and then below, it had to be one of two things, either the village was built inside the mountain or it was built under it. In either case the village symbol, designed in the shape of mountain peaks, had significance.
Working fast, he traveled the mountainside until reaching the bottom. Bringing him dangerously close to the village entrance, Kabuto used his speed to get away and return to his Lord as quickly as possible. He knew Orochimaru had probably turned in for the night.
By the time he reached the lair, it was so late into the night, it was now early morning. There were still several hours until sunrise. Kabuto made his way to his lab. There, he discovered instructions to get some rest and to keep an eye on Sasuke since Orochimaru was going to be away for most of the day. With a snort, he did as the note instructed.
-
At the appointed time, Kabuto started his day before going to Sarah's room. Seeing she was still asleep, he decided to take the opportunity to surprise Sarah with her things. Either sleep deprivation was getting to him or she was a light sleeper, due to this he accidentally woke her.
Her tired eyes caught a glimpse of silver. Taking a moment for her eyes to focus, she saw that it was Kabuto putting something into the dresser.
"What the hell!" shooting up into a sitting position. "What are you doing!!?" Sarah yelled, showing her signature spunk. She could tell by his hair, glasses, and the fact there was lit candles, who was in her room. Just because she considered him a friend, wasn't going to stop her from yelling. Then again, it was probably due to being freaked out, thinking he might find the photo she hid of Orochimaru in that very same drawer. To her relief, the young man didn't mention it, which was a good indication that he didn't notice the childhood photo of his Lord. If he had, it would have raised suspicion for sure.
Looking in her direction, he pushed his glasses higher on the bridge of his nose. "I apologize for the intrusion. I didn't mean to disturb you." He then closed the dresser drawer. "I was just putting some clothes away."
Her eyes narrowed. "What the hell does that mean?" She pulled the blankets back and making sure the robe was still tied tightly around her. She stood. "With your 'Lord' bringing me here, I have no clothes besides what I'm wearing!"
With a smile, he opened a drawer again so she could see. Inside were her own personal clothes from back home. On top was the dress she was wearing that very morning when Orochimaru made himself known to her. It had been cleaned. "I've retrieved some of your personal belongings."
Her eyes widened, turning her head away suddenly. Appalled at the sight of the dress. But that wasn't the only reason. "Why..." she whispered. "Why is this happening? What makes me so special?" Was he ordered to retrieve her things?
Closing the drawer once more, he put his hand on her shoulder. Kabuto had a feeling the snake nin probably didn't even know why himself. “I don’t have an answer for you.” Taking his hand away he went to the door, opening it. "My lord will be busy today, would you like some breakfast?"
At the mention of breakfast, her stomach growled. "Yeah, I would, actually." Reaching into the night stand, she pulled out the map scroll, sliding it into her robe and followed.
He stepped into the hallway, leading her towards the kitchen.
"Ummm… I was wondering since this is now my home," she sneered at the word. "Is there anyway to make my room brighter?"
“I will have to speak to my Lord about the matter,” Kabuto answered. On the way they came across the Uchiha boy leaning against the wall, most likely bored since his sensei was busy. There were still a few cuts on his face.
"So... taking the new hobby for a walk now are we, Kabuto?" Sasuke asked in a taunting voice.
Sarah sneered. "Who the hell gives you the right to judge me! And I'm no one’s hobby! Just because your brother killed your family doesn't mean you get to take your aggression out on me!"
Sasuke's red eyes widened in pure hatred as he stepped forward towards her. "Don't you EVER mention Itachi! You don't know ANYTHING ABOUT ME!" he thundered.
With a gulp, Sarah shivered, taking a step back. Okay, perhaps one shouldn't provoke him like that. He could be a loose cannon.
"Sasuke!" Kabuto snapped stepping between the teen and Sarah. "May I remind you what happened the last time you did that? You're only making more work for me when my Lord returns."
Sarah looked between the two of them. "He did that to him because of me?" she muttered to herself, noticing bandages still on his arms. That explains why he was limping past her the evening before.
Sasuke sneered, he would never forget what she said. "She's a waste of time. Should just let her go." With that Sasuke turned and moved away, leaving the two alone.
Sarah kept quiet until Sasuke was gone. "Orochimaru did that to him?"
Kabuto sighed, relaxing his irritation with the boy. "Yes," continuing to lead the way. "He wasn’t so forgiving during his training session yesterday."
"Because of his rude remarks to me?" At least Orochimaru didn't like her being insulted like that. She shook her head and continued to follow him. "Why does he say such rude things? If I had my way I wouldn't be here."
"That's just how he is. If he didn't need my lord to train him, he probably wouldn't be either."
They proceeded down the hall. It wasn't long till they came to a doorway. Inside were cabinets and a tall cupboard. On one side stood a stove. Still lit by candles, although there was a difference between there and any of the other rooms. There was more lighting.
Sarah stepped into the room and saw a table. "So, out of all the rooms, this one is the brightest? I'm serious, I'll go mad here!" She took a seat at the table, watching her friend as best as she could.
Going to the large cupboard, Kabuto opened it to reveal the insides of a fridge. Getting the ingredients he needed, he began to make breakfast.
He knew she was still having a hard time adjusting, and he wanted to do something for her. "If it helps, we could go outside," he suggested. "Though I have orders not to let you leave," He warned. Given his orders, if Sarah ran from him, he would have no choice but to seal her in her room.
"No choice is there on that?" Sarah sighed. "Might as well just be a prisoner here. Oh sure I can tour the place and go outside, but I can't leave. If I do, I'll be caught or considered an S-ranked criminal?"
“There’s a difference.” Not looking at her, focusing on his cooking. "Prisoners don't even get that," he challenged. 'So that's what he told her. Guess it's better than nothing. It’s too soon for her to know the truth,' he thought.
"True, but prisoners also can't leave. They are forced to stay where they are… which is what you two are doing. I'm forced out of my home to live in this underground dungeon with barely any lighting. I can't leave the place. That's a prison." She sighed again. "I can't sleep in my own bed. I can't hang around or be with my friends. I have nothing."
Of course she didn't really have friends to begin with, which is why she befriended him so easily when he infiltrated her village.
“If I remember correctly, you really didn’t have friends anymore. I was the only friend you had left in that village.”
“Bite me!” she snapped.
Kabuto let the remark go, allowing the room to go quiet, knowing he wasn't going to change her mind. Finishing his cooking, he set a plate in front of her then began to clean up.
Sarah looked at the plate of food and immediately felt hungrier. Sighing, she began to eat. "Aren't you going to eat?" she asked suddenly after taking a few bite fulls. "Or you already ate?" something else began to bother her. Why was Orochimaru gone?
"I ate earlier," he lied. He hasn’t had the time, and tending to Sarah came first. Tidying up, he put the ingredients away.
"Why am I not surprised," she retorted. She then went back to eating in silence. When she was done, she looked up. "Perhaps I will take you up on your offer and go outside. You know I'm used to brighter lighting, as if my village was above ground."
Looking at her, he nodded. "I will take you later. I have to do a few things first." With the cleaning completed, he went to the doorway. "You’ll know where to find me." With that he left, planning to go straight to bed for some much needed rest.
"Bastard," she muttered. Standing up, she began to head back to her room, using the map Kabuto gave her to help her.
