Groceries are done. Cleaning is done. Even the laundry is done. His arm is hurting quite a bit by now, but it was worth it. He didn’t think about the two men at all. Not once. Well, maybe, once. He was checking out vegetables and wondered if Ibiki really like mushrooms as much as they say. Alright, maybe he thought about it twice, because when he was hanging his laundry for air drying, he thought about how fresh the teacher always looks. And smells.
He sits down on his couch with a loud groans and leans his face onto his hands. It is no use. His mind is filled with them. And they didn’t do anything. Nothing. Sure, Ibiki helped him and Iruka is nice, even if one would think about the fight they had, all those years ago, but there is nothing that gives him reason for all of his toughs.
He is selfish. He is a burden. He should probably take another mission, a six month mission, and get away from this place. From them. Because, all he wants, is something he can’t get. Something he is not allowed to get. If he is out on a mission, then at least he is helping the Village. The Hokage. All the people inside. Including them.
But, he is still injured. And, to be honest, although he would never admit it, not out loud, he is still tired. He shrugs to himself and wonders if it would be best for him if he just went to sleep. Just to rest. Nothing more. Sleep makes the mind clear. And it passes time. And if enough time has passed, his injuries will be healed and he will be allowed to go on a mission.
He nods to himself and rises to his feet, ready to listen to himself and join his pillow on his bed.
There is a knock on the door and he stops.
Who would knock on his door? In the middle of the day? The urgent mission Shinobi’s usually knock on doors in the middle of the night. And he has no delivery. And his pupils don’t know about his return. Yet. Which is good, because he doesn’t want them to worry about him and his arm or whatever.
There is another, more persistent knock on his door.
He sighs and moves towards it, dreading whoever is on the other side. With one hand reaching for the door knob, he stops himself. What if it is Ibiki? What if it is Iruka? He swallows and stares at the door knob, blinking once and twice. He can’t handle them being here. Is there a chance to slip out? Unnoticed?
“Hatake, brat, I know you’re in there. Open the door before I break it down.”
Oh, it’s the Hokage.
Relief fills his body and he opens the door. “Maah, I just came back from a mission.” He shrugs. “I am not up to my normal speed.”
She is not amused. “Morino told me you sought medical aid,” she says. Her arms are folded over each other, there is a deep frown on her face and her lips are a tad puckered.
Kakashi shrugs.
“Why didn’t you ask me?” She leans in.
Kakashi steps back. “It was late,” he says. He scratches the back of his head and shrugs again. “I was doing my rounds and he invited me in.”
The Hokage narrows her eyes. “Well,” she says. She closes her eyes for a moment and nods. “I guess it was my mistake. I should have asked you to tell me more about your injuries.” She chuckles. “You do realize that I will keep you in my office until I have thoroughly examined you. Next time?”
Kakashi drops his hand. “There is no need for that,” he says. He does not want to take any more time of her, time she should use on other Shinobi, on the Village.
“There is need for medical aid for my best Shinobi,” she says. There is a hint of anger in her voice. One that Kakashi doesn’t quite understand.
“I’m fine,” Kakashi folds his own arms over each other, thinking of a way to get out of this situation. He doesn’t want to make her worry, he doesn’t want to disobey her, but he doesn’t want to take her time either.
“So, you and Ibiki?” she asks. She blinks a few times.
Kakashi does the same, not understanding her question. “What about it?” he asks. He swallows, frowns and feels a slight tremble in his leg. The sign that he is not comfortable.
She sighs and roll her eyes. “Do you have a kind of pact together? That he looks after you when you arrive home from a mission?” She waves a hand around. “That he helps you with stuff like that.”
Kakashi shrugs. “He did last night,” he mutters.
The Hokage sighs. “Come with me.” She turns around and walks away from the door, with big, hasty steps. “I don’t trust your word for it. We’ll ask Ibiki himself.”
