"I should just leave you here!"
Eiji's words echoed in the kikaichū host's blurred memory...the way in which his teammate said it...it almost had Shino convinced that the blonde man may have sincerely considered it. Shino huddled with the kunoichi in his arms as he failed to remember what had happened after being carried away from the alley. Drowsily, Shino posed the question to his insect companions. Amidst the many voices, the female tasked to report to him pointed his attention to Hachi's backpack.
Shino then sensed it: some of his beetles were inside the baggage. Carefully laying the kunoichi on the floor in front of him, Shino hurried his fingers to unfasten the buckles and dug to find his chakra vile. All but two of the camera-geared kikaichū were alive and their host uncapped the vile to free them of the cameras. One by one he delicately dislodged the electronics and let his beetles return to the colony. Huffing in both relief and exhaustion, Shino settled down in front of Hachi again, all of the sequestered beetles vying for their chance to communicate.
***
A lone kikaichū crawled through Hachi's hair, making her aware that it was still holding on tight. The kunoichi tried her best to keep up the façade as Tekkō fondled her ass. The beetle paid no mind to their conversation as it watched Hachi's movements. Her hand slipped into her purse and the insect unceremoniously dove into the accessory as well. The female parasite watched her pretend to fuss and fumble as she opened a vile of white powder and rubbed it on her thumb and index finger.
Careful to not touch the bottle cap, her hand plucked a sake nip and pulled it out of the purse. The kikaichū crept out just enough to witness Hachi uncap the tiny bottle with her clean hand as she laughed.
"Mmm," she moaned, kicking back the booze without breathing. "All your good company and I'm not allowed to drink at work."
"Whadda shame." Tekkō pushed her back against a tree and forced the giggling woman into a kiss.
Playfully, Hachi pried her lips away and shushed the man with her index finger, making sure to hold it there until he breathed through his nose. "Now, now! I'm not a big nature lover." she complained, pretending to disapprove of the tree trunk catching at her dress.
Tekkō's impatient expression started to shake off in confusion, and soon a placated state, as he said nothing.
Hachi smiled, "Let's go back to your place, pleeease?" she whined cutely.
Tekkō turned to walk as Hachi scooted her shoulders under his muscular arm.

Back at the safe house, another female kikaichū flew to a perch as Eiji gracelessly dumped Shino on the floor. The ash-blonde chūnin rested his ear against the insect master's chest and checked the pulse in his neck. The colony grew frantic underneath as they realized Shino's chakra had been critically depleted.
"Barely there..." Eiji lifted off his unconscious teammate. "Fuck, you got cold quick!"
The chūnin ran to the bedroom and quickly returned with all three of the shinobis' covers. He cocooned Shino inside of them and began to pace. The female beetle was fast becoming aware that her host's teammate knew nothing of medical procedure...she could not retreat inside of the Aburame man without harming him until he regained consciousness. The beetle grew fidgety and Eiji was in a similar state.
"RRR! GODAMMIT!" the man kicked the low dining table across the room and sat down staring at the frail shinobi before him. "They just put me back under the gun, again! WHY'D YOU HAVE TO FUCK YOURSELF UP UNDER MY WATCH?! NOW, OF ALL THE SHITTY TIMES TO DO IT!"
*
As soon as Hachi closed the door of her apartment she blitzed through, redressing to her black jōnin garb in the dark and repacking her gear. As she leapt out of the dark room through the fire escape, she left nothing behind except her empty suitcase. Quickly, she stayed in the shadows; brandishing her key to the bar, she went inside and searched for the kikaichū left to fend for themselves. They were all still in position, waiting for Shino's orders. Two had died, but Hachi collected them with the others in her purse anyway.
Hearing footsteps, the kunoichi silently crept through the rafters as a yakuza shatei searched the building, gun gleaming. Without a sound, she bolted out of the door while his head was turned, not bothering to lock it back. She hastened her pace back to the bath house where she found several gangsters threatening guests to find out Tekkō's whereabouts. Lucky for her, they hadn't yet ransacked Shino's suite. Picking the lock of her teammate's balcony window, she felt through the pitch black room until her eyes adjusted.
She packed away the laptop and maps into Shino's briefcase and grabbed the chakra vile she saw him use to store the insects. Just as a pounding sounded on the door of the suite, she fled back to the safe house. The kikaichū buzzed out warning when they noticed masked-chakra following them through the forest, but Hachi pressed-on, ignorant to their language.
*
The sun was starting to rise by the time she rushed through the farm house door, Eiji immediately grabbed her by the shoulders.
"Where the fuck have you been?!" he yelled.
"Cleaning!" she panted and knocked his hands off her person, "Are you hurt?" she demanded.
"No."
Hachi nodded then pushed past Eiji to find Shino lying in a bundle of blankets, his lips donning a purple hue. She loosened a blanket to check his pulse to find him too cool, his heartbeat fast, and breathing shallow. Pulling out his hand she saw a blue tint forming at the base of his fingernails.
"Damn it..." she hissed, quickly wrapping him back up. "he's not getting enough oxygen."
Before the two could do anything to assist Shino, a kunai shattered through the window and the tag attached ignited.
"RUN!" Eiji shouted as he grabbed Shino and ran for it. The female kikaichū latched its pinsers into Hachi's skin as the kunoichi grabbed Shino's pack and fled. Neither looked back as the house exploded behind them and six yakuza-nin flanked either side of the team. Executing hand seals, Hachi dove and pressed her palms to the snow disappearing under forest floor as Eiji leapt skyward. As one of their attackers' feet touched the ground, Hachi's hand latched onto the nin's ankle and pulsed an electric shock, pulling the stunned man into his frozen grave. Leaping from the dirt, she amplified the chakra in her feet to gain on the others.
Eiji ran eastbound, blinding his pursuers with the rising sun. Taking the advantage, he threw a hail of senbon behind him and managed to gauge-out one man's eye. Hachi blindsided another, knocking him out of the trees. Seeing an enemy come up on his left, Eiji nearly dropped Shino as he formed his hand signs. The chūnin funneled chakra into his fingers, leapt, and grappled his pursuer's shoulder, successfully paralyzing his arm.
Needing to summon another ninjutsu, the blonde called out to the kunoichi tailing below him, "HEADS UP!"
Hachi looked-up to see Shino's swaddled body plummeting toward her widening eyes. She just did manage to focus chakra into her legs as she caught the heavier man. The impact shattered a handful of branches out from under her feet, but she quickly rebounded. It did little good for her speed though to carry Shino and the extra packs, so she dove down and launched herself and the Aburame man under a large thicket gracelessly. The kikaichū peered from her backpack as she unraveled a scroll with a pre-written seal. Positioning the seal directly beneath Shino's heart, she hurried her hand signs and bit the blood from her thumb.
"Transport Jutsu!" she executed.
Pushing her blood down on her teammate, the kikaichū buzzed with panic as they watched their unconscious host disappear inside of the scroll. Hachi rolled it up just before a kunai aimed to destroy the parchment. Tucking the scroll in a backpack, she ran. As she caught up with Eiji, the chūnin lit a flash bomb and threw it in the faces of the shinobi tailing them. A great blast of white light blinded the forest behind them and left all the shinobi with a deafening ring in their ears. Neither dared stop as Hachi and Eiji shook off the slight dizziness and ascended to the barren mountain crags ahead of them.
The two ducked into a hunting shack that was just barely visible under the mounding snow. As soon as they were inside, Hachi unrolled the scroll and released Shino from its prison.
"Hachi, we need cover, quick." Eiji urged, shivering as the freezing air hit his sweat.
Nodding despite her shaky panting she threw out a complicated formula of hand signs and sealed the shack with a genjutsu. "That'll hold them off for a while." she assured, but her confidence quickly shattered when she heard the insect-user's breath rattle.
Her eyes widened and lip quivered in pure fear as Shino exhaled the visible vapor of a final, labored breath...he stilled. "No...NO!" she yelped as she unwrapped him from the blankets.
Pumping her palms into his chest rhythmically, she stopped the sequence and pinched his nose shut, breathing air into his lungs. Nothing. Returning to another round of chest compressions she repeated the process with no success.
"Eiji, my pack, center pouch! Get the swabs and epinephrine from the med kit!" she called out to the chūnin behind her.
Fitfully, he tossed out the first aid kit and ripped open the packages while Hachi tore open the side of Shino's slacks with a kunai. Passing the injection and wipes to his captain, Eiji watched along with the beetles as Hachi sanitized the Aburame man's outer thigh, aimed carefully, and rammed the needle into their unmoving teammate. It felt like an eternity had passed before the adrenaline kicked in; Shino's limbs jolted and he painfully gasped for air. Hachi's trembling hands carefully removed the injector before Shino rolled. The insect-user swayed uneasy on his arms.
"Shino, can you hear me? ...Shino?" Hachi called calmly as she could.
Shino said nothing as he promptly vomited. His arms then buckled under his own weight. Hachi managed to catch the dark-haired man before he collapsed in his own expulsion. Clearly realizing as she helped Shino reposition, more would be needed to save the academy sensei lying before her, but time to complete the mission was no longer on their side.
"Eiji..." she whispered out of breath as a tear rolled mascara down her dirt-stained cheek. She rubbed another sterile swab over Shino's puncture wound and taped gauze down to shield it. "You need to get back to Konoha."
The blonde shook his in head vehemently, "Fuck that! I'm not leaving you two here alone."
"You can't help Shino in his state, and if that evidence doesn't reach the Daimyō before the yakuza do, it could start a war against Iwa." her voice gritted out as she loaded the laptop, cassette recorder, and all the weapons they could spare into Eiji's backpack.
"It can wait!" he stayed.
Hachi shot him a lethal glare. "GET THAT EVIDENCE TO KONOHA, NOW! THAT'S AN ORDER!" she roared.
Eiji stood dumbfounded...not once had the woman ever pulled rank on him until now It didn't take him long to compose himself though as Hachi stood and stared him down, holding the backpack up for his receipt. Offended and speechless, the chūnin snatched the baggage from her hands and left without a word. Inhaling a shaky breath, Hachi dropped to her knees and started a fire. Dragging Shino by the blankets in front of the fireplace, she pulled out a scroll bearing the Aburame signet and the chakra-vile. Carefully she plucked the kikaichū from her pack and contained them within the nourishing glass tube, making doubly-sure not to breathe, nor to jostle the loose powder in her purse too much; thoroughly cleaning her nostrils, mouth, and hands to keep from drugging herself. Promptly, she hid the bag away to prevent exposure and took a deep breath before placing the vile in her open backpack.
Hachi then untucked Shino's dress shirt and loosened his tie and while rechecking his vitals; unraveling the scroll, she read its contents carefully. Slowly forming the hand signs, she watched the man in front of her...lips a little less purple, but still wheezing for breath. The beetles looked on from their glass confinement as Hachi reopened the bite-mark on her thumb a pressed her hands to the academy teacher's bare abdomen.
"Surrogacy Seal Jutsu!" She summoned and felt her chakra focus to a blue glow under her hands.
As the seal unfurled on his pale, muscled skin, Hachi gulped hard and prepared for what was to come. A single pore dilated on the man beneath her, and famished, a swarm of kikaichū began covering her hands. When they landed on her palms, they burrowed. The woman growled back a scream behind her teeth and shook incessantly from the pain as the beetles bored under her skin, starved for chakra. Shino lay oblivious as his breathing deepened, his pulse regaining some strength.
The kunoichi steeled her herself with resolve, letting the colony feed on her chakra while they left their host to rest and regenerate his own. She sobbed and her breathing came in gulping gasps as blood dripped from the burrow holes of her black-beaded hands. After an hour or so, she managed to block-out the pain, though her trembling never ceased. The parasites navigated under her skin, no higher than her elbows, and took turns crawling in and out of her flesh to tap her chakra network; delivering a share to restore Shino's chakra supply as they went. Opening her tear-blurred eyes, Hachi saw that Aburame's color had come back.
She sat still as a glimmer of midday light crept through the cracks of the wooden shack. Blue-gray eyes drifted closed as the kunoichi pushed her mind into a meditative state. Nothing else existed then except two singular thoughts: Hold the genjutsu, feed the colony.
***
The kikaichū settled down after describing their distress and confusion. Shino merely stared-off into space. He truly had no idea what to think at this point; all he was consumed with was that damn stench of death and sickness. As he gagged quietly, he wished for just a minute to air-out the shack, but as the blizzard outside rattled the walls of their shelter, he didn't chance opening the door again until the storm had passed.
***
Shino...felt lighter than normal. He opened his eyes with blurry, tinted vision of a wooden ceiling above. It was dark...he couldn't feel any of his colony within him. Panic set in: where were his kikaichū?! The dark-haired man's head ached with a sudden, sinking blood-rush as he bolted upright. Shaking off the dizziness fretfully, he felt a strange tingle against his stomach. Regaining his sight, Shino looked down to see Hachi slouching just above his abdomen and her dark hands against his bare skin.
Why were her hands black? Sitting-up all the way, her wrists fell limply into his lap, then suddenly the black flew away from her bloody hand and regrouped quickly. Shino gasped to realize his colony was feeding on her. He frantically looked down to see the seal tattooed over his torso.
"What have you done..." he panted as sweat quickly beaded his forehead.
Hurriedly, he hoisted the woman by her shoulders to sit up and face him, "Hachi, what have you done?!" he demanded.
No answer was given as Shino inspected her half-lidded gaze. She wasn't unconscious from what he could see. The kunoichi appeared to be in a trance. Gritting his teeth, the Aburame slapped the woman in his arms.
"Snap out of it! Hachi!" he rustled her until she came to with a groan.
"...Shhhino?" she spoke tiredly.
He brushed the smeared makeup from her face. "Release the seal now. Do it!"
With a daze, Hachi looked down at her infested hands and nodded weakly. With great trembling, she molded one of her beetle-studded hands and dispelled her jutsu. Shino didn't even have time to think before a scream ripped out of the exhausted kunoichi's throat. He held his teammate still against himself as the colony dug their way out of her hands and returned to their host. As the last insects filed out, Shino clutched onto Hachi and the two just stared at the condition of her arms. The elbows down were swollen and inflamed. Below the wrist, her hands were coated in a gloss of twitching, bright red stain.
Shino's panting became labored as his calm was failing him. "Why?" he breathed, "Do you realize what you've done?" he shook her lightly in his firm grip.
"...Kept you...alive." she gasped, trying to squirm out of his hold.
"You made a contract with them!" his voice rose as he tightened his grip, making her wince. "You made a contract and now they'll come to you when I can't feed them!"
"You were dead, Shino..." Hachi breathed deeply as tears welled-up on her lashes, blinking hard for more alertness.
Shino shook his head furiously, "THEY COULD HAVE KILLED YOU!"
"WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO? REGRET SAVING YOUR LIFE?" Hachi's voice cracked and she knocked his hand from her shoulder, the action instantly making her double-over in pain.
Shino stopped immediately, sensing something, but he reacted too late. The door slammed open and three bodies rushed in, one with a bandaged eye threw the insect-user on his stomach, jabbing a heel in his back and pinning both of his hands down. Shino quickly turned to see Hachi's back to the ground, head pressed hard into the wood floor by another shinobi's foot. She tried to muster a grip to no avail, the pain appearing unbearable as her legs kicked to try and push with her feet.
"No...!" Shino growled out quietly as he struggled with great fatigue. Neither had the strength to free themselves.
"Thank you both for arguing. That lapse in concentration made it much easier for us to see past your genjutsu." The third strolled up and applauded. "Now...where's the other one?"
Neither of the teammates uttered a word. The nin that inquired crouched down in front of Hachi as the man stepping on her head pressed harder, laughing.
"You wanna tell me where he went, sweetheart? I'll make it hurt less if you do." the man threatened as Shino watched him tickle a thumb over her scabbed lip.
Waiting for an answer that never came, the crouching figure clicked his tongue against his teeth before pulling a kunai from his back pouch.
"Oh well, if you insist, whore." he chuckled and jerked open her jōnin amour, slicing her uniform and net shirt open with his blade. "Tekkō might've fallen for your shit, but I'm not giving you a chance to weasel out this time."
A sharp whistle rang out from the nin grappling the Aburame man. "Don't you dare!" the kikaichū host warned dangerously.
"Oh, but I think I will..." The lead nin replied as he pulled painfully at Hachi's nipple, only to receive no betraying reaction from the kunoichi.
Shino struggled with no gain and quickly calmed himself. Hachi growled when the nin released his grip and she landed a chakra-lacking kick against the man's jaw, but all it did was bolster him. The man roughly pinned her legs open and aimed the kunai between. Just as he reared-back for the strike, the shinobi suddenly flailed backwards in pain, the other two men quickly followed suit as a black swarm angrily engulfed the shack. Hachi blacked-out when the shinobi above let the full weight of his foot step on her temple in panic, tripping over her head. Shino quickly kicked back his captor and walked over to the unconscious kunoichi.
He suddenly felt a sharp tug on his slacks. Looking down, the Aburame man saw the shinobi that had just attempted to harm his teammate clutching at his bandaged thigh, begging for mercy. Unfeeling, Shino backhanded the kikaichū-riddled nin, removing him from the insect-user's path. A panting Shino pulled the third shinobi off of the exposed woman and scooped her up from the cold floor. Still unsteady on his feet, Shino walked past the screaming toward his backpack.
He grabbed the olive-green trenchcoat and sat himself and Hachi down in a corner. Laboriously, Shino's sunglassed eyes grew weary as he carefully cradled the woman's neck, stripping her bared chest of her amoured vest and shredded uniform, and replacing the ruined garments with his baggy coat. He just did manage to zip up the garment and laid her down carefully before he fell back against the corner exhausted. He numbly observed the stilled masses lying on the cabin floor, encased in a moving, black sea of his parasites.
He summoned a female from the swarm. Eagerly, the kikaichū landed on her host's nose, waiting patiently for his orders. Shino silently instructed her and the beetle flew over to land on Hachi's neck. With haste, the insect dug into the kunoichi's skin, and Shino mentally guided his symbiont underneath the barrier of the blue-eyed woman's skull. The kikaichū moved with great care, confirming for her master that Hachi was concussed, but the skull was not fractured, there was no visible damage to the major nerve, minimal blood vessel damage, and no swelling to be found. Shino sighed and prayed that that would be the only extent of the injury and beckoned the female back to him.
The insect-user slowed his hassled breaths as the colony returned to their home underneath his skin. The sensei suddenly felt an increase in his strength as the kikaichū shared the chakra they'd just gorged upon. Feeling more awake and steady, he took advantage of the beetles' dormant state, having eaten their fill for the foreseeable future. The Aburame clansman collected the shriveled shells left of his enemies one by one, burying them in snowy graves that night with an earth release. He marked the burials as best as he could manage.
He refused to treat their remains as inhumanely as they treated his teammate. He would never dishonor the Aburame name by stooping to such a low. Returning to the shack, Shino examined the filth that seemingly coated everything...including his kunoichi captain. Rummaging through his backpack, he replaced his sunglasses with the bulky visor and retrieved a rag, canteen, and medic kit. He considered the blankets, but deemed them useless with the apparent stain of vomit and threw them away from the hearth.
He knelt by Hachi's face, stained with dirt and ruined makeup. Carefully aware of her temple, Shino dampened the cloth and washed her face silently. Removing the grime of dirtied makeup distantly made him feel as if he was trying to find the real Hachi underneath...not the seductress, but he teacher to whom he had grown attached. Washing her arms up with iodine, the kikaichū host gingerly wrapped her wounds before the supplemental chakra began to wane within him.
