Chapter 4. Scars
When Kira got up it was early afternoon, Itachi was gone, she wondered if the events of the past twenty-four hours had been a dream. She changed into a clean set of clothes and went to see what kind of food there was in the house. There wasn't much to find, a few basic canned goods left behind by the last tenant, the fridge was bare, she would have to go shopping. Luckily she had brought everything with her when she had left the cottage, and Itachi had been kind enough to take care of the cost of the apartment.
She shoved her wallet and a couple of kunai into her pocket before heading out the door. She hoped Itachi had been able to leave the area undetected.
She found the streets almost deserted, many people still shaken up over the events of the last few days. But there were still a few people out and about, others shopping like herself, children playing, a couple walking a dog. Normal everyday life for them, she blended in as well as she could, smiling and nodding at those who passed her. She fell into step a few feet behind a father and his son, she had heard the man talking to the boy about what they were getting at the market. Following them was a safe bet as she didn't want to look lost, after what had happened they would be extremely worried about outsiders.
After she finished she made her way back home. She unpacked and made herself lunch. Despite Itachi's abrupt departure she was in good spirits, determined to take advantage of the beautiful weather she grabbed her sketch pad and headed outside. The courtyard of the building was mostly empty with just a few children chasing each other around, she settled herself down in the shade of a tree and went to work. Suddenly she was almost bowled over by a small girl being chased by a group of boys.
"Leave me alone!" The child screamed at her pursuers as she hid behind Kira.
"Stop hiding you little freak," the ringleader of the boys, taunted the little girl. He was a stocky kid, probably older than the girl by a few years, he had spiky brown hair and a bandaid on his forehead.
Kira stood up making sure to keep the child behind her, "is there a problem here?"
The boy shot her a petulant look, "what's it to you? I'll have you know that my father's a high ranking shinobi, so you better not touch me. That little freak has it coming."
Kira raised an eyebrow at the little brat, "really and what has she done to deserve this kind of treatment?" She noticed the other boys were looking around nervously.
"They wanted to take my allowance," the little girl behind her whispered when the boy refused to answer. He shot her a look that promised pain.
"I'm going to break your glasses off your pathetic little face!"
Kira was honestly surprised that the kid was still so mouthy when in the presence of someone older than him. Perhaps others really were afraid of the boy's father, or maybe they had never called his bluff before, "So your dad's a shinobi huh?"
"Yup and one day I will be too," he said proudly.
"Why not go get him then, I'm interested in what he thinks about his son bullying a girl much smaller than him, and with so much back up too. Surely you're not scared of her that you need so many people."
The boy's demeanor changed abruptly, he averted his eyes, "I can't he's away on a mission."
Kira could tell by his body language that he was lying. "I would suggest you go play somewhere else, and leave the girl alone. I better not see you picking on anyone else or I will track down your parents and let them know just how cowardly their son is," it was an empty threat but the kid didn't need to know that.
The boys took off running before she could say another word, she looked around and noticed a young blonde man leaning against the wall of the building, he had been paying attention to the exchange. She ignored him and turned to look at the girl, "are you okay? They didn't hurt you did they?"
She looked up at her, her small eyes still filled with tears behind her thick glasses, she shook her head causing her strawberry blonde pigtails to whip back and forth, "no they didn't, thank you miss."
Kira smiled at her, "you can call me Yanagi, and it's not a problem I'm sure anyone else would have done the same. What's your name?"
"Hanami, that's a really pretty picture," she said looking at the sketch that lay forgotten on the ground.
Kira followed her gaze to the forest landscape she had been working on, "thank you Hanami. Do you want to stay here with me for a little while before you go home? Just to make sure they're gone."
"Can I watch you draw?"
"Sure you can, but it's pretty boring." She worked in silence for awhile, it did not escape her notice that they were still being watched by the young man, "how old are you Hanami?"
"I'm six, almost seven," the girl beamed, holding up six fingers.
"Wow, that's a great age."
"Yup and I'm going to go to the ninja academy so I can be a great shinobi," she paused, "are you a kunoichi?"
"Nope, just a plain girl, nothing special about me," she wished that were true. "Do those boys pick on you a lot?"
Hanami nodded, "they make fun of my glasses, they say if you have glasses you can't be a great shinobi."
"That's not true, you will make a great kunoichi one day."
"You really think so?" She asked hopefully.
"I know so."
"Hanami!!" They heard a voice call out in the distance.
"That's my mom, I have to go."
"Hold on a second," Kira tore the page out of her sketchbook and handed it her.
"For me, really?" She looked down at the picture, Kira had added a small girl with strawberry blonde hair holding an arm full of flowers in a meadow in front of the trees.
"Yes for you, remember never give up on your dream to become a great kunoichi."
"Thank you Yanagi, and I don't think you're plain at all I think you're beautiful," she gave her a quick hug and ran off with a smile on her face.
Kira waited until the girl was out of sight before sauntering over to the young man. "Is there a reason you're watching me?"
He scratched the back of his head in embarrassment of being spotted, "that was a nice thing you did for her."
She studied him for a moment, he was taller than she was with spiky blonde hair, he was wearing an atrocious orange and black track suit that would have looked ridiculous on anyone else but seemed to suit him. She had previously seen that he was wearing a forehead protector, but now that she was right in front of him she could see that it did not depict the symbol of the sand but that of the leaf village. "I don't think so, I think I just did what any decent person would have done. No one deserves to be bullied for something they have no control over."
He gave her a bright smile, "the world needs more people like you. Not everyone shares those same views."
"Yeah well those people are idiots, have a good evening," she said offhandedly and made her way inside.
She hadn't wanted to go in yet, but she had promised Itachi she would keep a low profile, she had already attracted the attention of that young man and didn't feel like sticking around any longer. She situated herself on the floor in front her coffee table and got to work sketching the strange young leaf ninja who had been watching her with those azure eyes.
Two months had passed since her arrival, she had settled into a simple routine of re-reading all of the scrolls she had accumulated over the years, from Itachi, in the mornings, spending her afternoons outside sketching. Sometimes Hanami would come and sit with her while she did so. The girl was a wealth of information on what was happening in Suna, making it easy for her to pass on the interesting bits onto Itachi in her weekly letters. Such as the fact that the Kazekage lived, though the reason behind this was not widely known.
One night Kira was in her bathroom soaking in the tub, running water was the one thing she had missed all those years in her cottage, when she heard a noise in the hallway. She got out of the tub, not worrying about clothes she only stopped to retrieve a kunai from the toilet tank. She poked her head out the door and surveyed the area, she saw nothing but heard a sound in the den, she rounded the corner quickly in an attempt to take the intruder by surprise.
It was Itachi, he frozen at the sight of her, standing there naked, wielding a kunai. She let out a small squeak and retreated to the bathroom to get her bathrobe. He was still standing in the same spot when she returned, "Itachi, what are you doing here?"
"What the hell were you thinking, coming out here like that, what if it was someone coming to get you?" He admonished her.
"That's exactly what I thought was happening," she answered calmly.
"So you didn't even bother to put on clothes?" he retorted.
"An enemy isn't going to stop and wait for me to get ready, you taught me that. Now why are you here, do we need to leave?"
He finally seemed to recover the ability to move, he sat down in the closest chair, "no, I was just coming to check on you, I told you after what happened that I would check up on you more often."
"I'm going to go get changed, you want some tea?"
"Yes please." He watched her walk away before turning to her coffee table that held stacks of sketches, she had been busy while he was gone. He began to shuffle through them when a familiar face caught his eye.
Kira came back into the room carrying a tray of tea, "can you clear me a space on the table?" He didn't move, just sat staring intently at the sketch in his hands. "Earth to Itachi, what's wrong?"
"What is this?"
She snatched the paper out of his hands, "nothing, just some guy I saw the first day I got here, he was hanging around the courtyard, the day I met that girl I told you about, Hanami."
"You never mentioned that you ran into a leaf shinobi that day."
"I didn't see the point, we exchanged a few words and I haven't seen him since, why? Who is he?"
"Exchanged a few words?"
Kira sighed, he wasn't about to answer her until she answered first, "yes a few words, he saw me protecting a little girl from a group of bullies, and said it was nice of me." She stopped and waited for him to speak again.
"You're sure you haven't seen him since then?"
Kira knelt at his feet, "Itachi, who is he?"
"He's the nine-tails jinchuriki."
Her eyes widened in surprise, "do you think he knew who I was?"
Itachi shook his head, "I doubt it but it is a possibility, I will have to look into it. You looked tired."
"I've been having a hard time sleeping, is it true, the four tails was taken?"
He nodded, "and the three tails too." His eyes showed the sadness he felt, the remorse, he had their blood on his hands and there was no washing it off.
She reached for his hand, he didn't pull away when she grasped it. "I'm sorry."
"You have nothing to be sorry for."
Kira shook her head, "I wish I could help you, that you didn't have to carry this burden alone."
"No Kira, I would never put you in danger. I just need you to trust me to keep you safe."
Her eyes filled with tears, "always 'Tachi, I will always trust you."
He pulled her into a kiss, she could feel his desperation and it broke her heart. If only she weren't so weak she could help him.
I tear my heart open, I sew myself shut
My weakness is that I care too much
And my scars remind me that the past is real
I tear my heart open just to feel
Drunk and I'm feeling down
And I just wanna be alone
I'm pissed cause you came around
Why don't you just go home
Cause you channel all your pain
And I can't help you fix yourself
You're making me insane
All I can say is
I tear my heart open, I sew myself shut
My weakness is that I care too much
And our scars remind us that the past is real
I tear my heart open just to feel
I tried to help you once
Against my own advice
I saw you going down
But you never realized
That you're drowning in the water
So I offered you my hand
Compassions in my nature
Tonight is our last stand
I tear my heart open, I sew myself shut
My weakness is that I care too much
And our scars remind us that the past is real
I tear my heart open just to feel
I'm drunk and I'm feeling down
And I just wanna be alone
You shouldn't ever come around
Why don't you just go home?
Cause you're drowning in the water
And I tried to grab your hand
And I left my heart open
But you didn't understand
But you didn't understand
Go fix yourself
I can't help you fix yourself
But at least I can say I tried
I'm sorry but I gotta move on with my own life
I can't help you fix yourself
But at least I can say I tried
I'm sorry but I gotta move on with my own life
I tear my heart open, I sew myself shut
My weakness is that I care too much
And our scars remind us that the past is real
I tear my heart open just to feel
I tear my heart open, I sew myself shut
My weakness is that I care too much
And our scars remind us that the past is real
I tear my heart open just to feel
"Stay with me?" She pulled back just enough to whisper against his lips.
"I should go," but I want to stay.
"I understand." She pulled away from him, he heard her soft footsteps retreat to the bedroom.
He closed his eyes and rested his head against the back of the chair and let out a deep sigh.
Kira stripped down to just her underwear and climbed into bed she pulled a pillow into her arms. It was true she understood, it didn't mean she had to like it. But she would let him go as she always did, and he would come back to her as he always had, until he didn't.
She refused to let herself think of it, she wiped a few stray tears from her eyes as she tried to clear her mind to sleep.
It had been hours since she had gone to bed and he still couldn't make himself leave. Couldn't shake the sound of her voice, when she asked him to stay, out of his mind. The way she looked when he first saw her tonight, naked, still dripping wet from her bath, her eyes full of fire and determination.
He got up out of the chair and made his way down the hall to the bedroom. The door was open just a crack, he eased it open silently. She was curled on her side sleeping, he took a step into the room and she shifted letting out a small moan, "'Tachi."
She could feel him, sliding his hands up her bare chest, running his fingers over her hard nipples. He took one into his mouth, his tongue circled the areola biting down gently eliciting a soft moan, "'Tachi."
He raised her arms above her head, securing them with a length of rope. He placed kisses down her torso, pausing to taste her navel as he hooked his fingers into her underwear, he eased them down her legs, "don't move." He spread her legs, burying his face in the golden curls, his tongue slipped between her folds, tasting her before circling that bundle of nerves.
Her eyes shot open at the sensation, she looked down to find him there, he looked back at her, his eyes clouded with desire, not stopping his ministrations, she threw her head back in ecstasy. His hands rested on her hips keeping her still as he dipped into that moist heat, when he was confident she would remain still, he brought a hand down between her legs, a finger taking the place of his tongue as sucked her clit into his mouth.
He thrust a second finger into her depths, pumping, bringing her to the edge. He could see her inner struggle to hold back. "Not yet," she groaned in sweet agony, yearning for release. He slipped his other hand under her ass, pulling her closer to him, "cum for me," he breathed and with one last lick she did. He drank it in, never stopping the steady rhythm of his fingers, stoking the fire within her.
He scorched a trail up her body with his talented tongue. Stopping at her breasts before kissing her deeply. The taste of her still on his lips, he stilled his hand but did not remove it, "do you want me to stop?"
"Never." She felt him position himself at her entrance, slowly entering her, he paused allowing her to adjust to the intrusion. He pulled out before thrusting back into her. She had never experienced anything so amazing before, she wanted so badly to meet his thrusts but would not move until he commanded it.
Her back threatened to arch, her hands strained against the bindings, she moaned into his kiss, wanting, needing more. "Move." She met him thrust for thrust it still wasn't enough. He brought her leg up over his shoulder giving him better leverage, then it happened, he hit a spot that made her see stars, again and again hitting it each time. He built her up with him before tumbling over with her, she screamed his name as she came.
He rolled off of her and she groaned at the loss, quickly untying her, he pulled her to rest on his chest before they allowed sleep to claim them.
