Chapter 4 Introductions Sesshomaru held his aim at the truck as he slowly approached the driver. The sound of the Nissan faded into the distance. Now the only things to be heard was a low rumble of the truck and hefty clunking of Sesshomaru’s shoes against the black top. Agony ripped through him with every step, but he pushed through it. Showing pain was a sign of weakness and one he couldn’t afford. Bloody and wet, rain soaked his clothes and hair, while mud coated his knees in an agonizing reminder that he had been brought to them. And now when he wanted nothing more then to wash the shameful mess off, he had to deal with this. A new player, entering a game about to end. Whoever it was had really bad timing. His gazed followed down the barrel of his Beretta. Sesshomaru’s eyes narrowed and breath stopped as he came within sight of the driver. Immediately he sighed and lowered his pistol. He hadn’t been looking forward to anymore fighting today. A young girl, with long, jet black hair, trembled in terror as her sky blue eyes pleaded with him. Gripping her steering wheel so tightly her knuckles turned white, and shook so badly that it looked like she was crying without the presence of tears. The sight of the frighten little thing remind him of a mouse being cornered by a cat. She was no threat to him. He turned his back to the little mouse and walked towards his car, stopping after a few yards to kneel down and return the small silver Beretta to his ankle holster. This had been the first time he ever shot that gun out of necessity. It had been a present from his father when he turned eighteen, a kind of, ‘welcome to the family business’ gift. Sesshomaru, Inuyasha, and their father all carried one around their ankle. Both the sons had promised to always have it on them. He shot it a few times at the range, to get the feel of it. “A gun to protect,” is what his father had called it. The idea of having a gun, but not using it, seemed unnecessary, but he did promise. Staying true his word, he carried it with him everyday for the last seven years. He made a mental note to properly thank his father for the gift. As he recalled, he hadn’t been so grateful when he’d first received it. After the pistol was secured in it’s holster, he set off to his Ferrari. He scoured the ground as he approached, searching of something. He stop a few feet from his car and retrieved a small black phone from the ground. Flipping it open, he gave it a displeasing snarl as the cover made a strange cracking noise and wouldn’t light up. After trying the ‘on’ button a few times with no avail, Sesshomaru pulled out the tiny micro chip and slipped it into his shirt pocket. He walked to his car and looked in, focusing on the back. Nothing. He tossed the broken phone onto the seat, and attempted to return to his search when the world became hazy. Once again his legs started to melt and his right side burned. A stabbing sensation pierced through him as he compressed the still bleeding wound. Leaning against the car for support he started to unbutton his shirt, wincing with every movement. He shot his chest a disgusted look while slipping his arms free of the smooth silk shirt. Dark blue and purple bruises covered his skin along with a inch long cut where the kid had manage to sink his knife into him. The injury was deep, but thin, and the bleeding already slowed. At least there was no worry of dying from the knife wound, but the possible internal bleeding and concussion that he might have was a different issue. Sesshomaru folded his shirt inside out and used the cleaner side to wipe away the red trail running down his face, trying to remove the blood form his eyes. Just as his sight began clear, he caught the sound of a creaking. An old truck door, in need of a good oiling, slowly opening. He didn’t even turn to acknowledge it, just pressed the shirt onto the cut at his side and continued his search for his gun. Scanning the glistening damp pavement, his gaze landed on something shining in the moonlight from across the road. A sigh of relief escaped his lips, he found it. Sesshomaru pushed against the car, forcing his unstable legs to hold his entire weight. Slowly he moved one foot in front of the other as he advanced towards his Glock. His limping pace halted as guarded clicking echoed over the road, approaching closer. The girl was following him. Why would she be doing that? Maybe he had been wrong and she was someone he should have been concerned about. There was no reason he could think of that someone in her position wouldn’t have just sped away. Stopped a few feet away from his gun, the tingling sensation of a pair of eyes of began burned into the back of his head. He froze as he felt the girl stop not twenty feet behind him. Readying himself to react to whatever she was going to do, he stood there, waiting. What is she doing? “Um,” a small voiced squeaked, breaking the eerie silence, “D-do you need help?” “No,” he replied, dismissing her before taking a few more steps. She was worried about him? Stupid mouse. Fretting over someone was the easiest way to get yourself hurt, especially when you didn’t know that someone, and they had a gun. Sesshomaru bent down and wrapped his hand around the black grip on his gun. He stood slowly, letting the pistol hang against his leg, making it impossible for the girl not to notice. This should scare the little mouse and cause it to scurry away. ********************** Hinata felt like she hit a break wall when her body refused to take another step towards the bloody man. He had another gun. She had been around guns most of her life, but never really felt comfortable near them. In the world she came from, guns were to kill, and they did their job well. She much preferred it when they were out of sight, and out of mind. This man though, seemed to purposely hold his in open view. Almost as if it was a warning, maybe one she should listen to. Her legs shook as she watched him leisurely tap the butt of the pistol against the side of his hip. The polish sliver barrel gleamed in the moonlight, drawing her eyes to it. “Go away.” The words broke her trance, causing her to snap to attention. “What?” she stumbled, speaking to his back. He couldn’t be serious. Why would he refuse help? “Go home, I don’t need your help.” His words were determined and strong. He actually believes he would be fine without help? Stupid man. “Sorry, I don’t mean to bother you, but it looks like you had an accident.” Hinata choose her words carefully, avoiding the topic of the other men, or of guns. “I can take you to the hospital.” “No. No, hospitals,” His words were deja vu, resurfacing many memories of hurt friends refusing medical attention, normally to avoid questioning from authority. She sighed as the understanding hit her. He didn’t want to bring cops into this. He would rather figure this out alone. Just great, another guy stupid enough he’d rather die, then go to the cops. Good thing she had some experience and the two most required traits in dealing with this type, persistence, and patience. “Then let me take you home.” Her voice steadier now then before. He faced her. Calm golden eyes met hers, and a strange tingle crawled up her spine. She hadn’t gotten a good look at him earlier, but now that she had, it dawned on her, he was beautiful. Even through the blood and dirt, she could see he had strong features and a young look to him that would be considered a ‘pretty boy’ gorgeous. Long silver hair flowed over his strong shoulders and down his well defined, muscular chest stopping just about belt level. Fuchsia, claw marked, tattoos stood about brilliantly against his ivory skin. Two stripes placed over each cheek and forearm, with a set that pulled from his sides and over his six pack, almost as if pointing to his naval. Hinata contently studied his body for a moment before reconnecting with his eyes. Heat crawled up her creeks when she realized how freely she had been ogling him, and that he watched her the entire time. Her face burned as she pulled her gaze away and directed them to the ground, staring at her feet. “I don’t live too far from you, it won’t be any trouble.” She shifted her feet, kicking at a piece of loose gravel, feeling much like a school girl too embarrassed to speak with a boy. A feeling the she got way to much for being nineteen. “You live at the Yagami Estate.” His factual tone took her by surprise. How did he know where she lived? “Yes…..” she gave him a second to explain himself, but he offered nothing. She left it alone. Pulling together courage once more, she faced him again, “Please. I couldn’t sleep tonight if I left you here.” Calming stillness fell over them as his glare made her fidget. Making her feel uncomfortable in her own skin as he warily eyed her. “Fine,” he responded, much to her surprise, before holstering the pistol. He walked past Hinata, without even offering a passing glance, leading the way to her truck. She followed. ************* The girl carefully lifted the dry cleaning off of the passenger seat, gently folded and placed it between the bucket seats. “Here,” she motioned to the open seat. Sesshomaru stepped into the cramped truck, as she pressed his door shut. He normally wouldn’t relay charity like this, but he wasn’t sure he could make it home. His body was weaken due to the lose blood, throbbing in pain since the adrenaline was wearing off, and he could hardy stand. If he was going to be walking home it wouldn’t be until after he took a long nap. And as much as sleeping on the side of the road sounded appealing, he’d rather be home quickly, get the chance to take care of is injuries and head to bed. So here he was, accepting the offer of a ride from a crazy young lady. Sesshomaru watched her nervously fiddle with the keys as she started the truck and pulled away. She looked extremely uncomfortable as she forcefully trained her eyes on the road, and nibbled on her bottom lip. He smirked to himself when the realization of what was going on seem to dawn on her. She looked like she bit off more then she could chew. “Which one’s yours?” she asked, still staring directly ahead. “I believe it is the fourth past your estate. The grey one with the stone work.” She offered a small nod, then reached in between Sesshomaru’s knees, making him straighten in his seat, and pressed the large button, to pop open the glove box. Leaning over, she gripped the steeling with one hand and raffled through papers with the other, pulling out a small package. “Ah,” she announced, and held out the travel sized tissues, “Here, I know they aren’t very big, but maybe they’ll help.” Placing his shirt on the floor board, he cautious took the tissues as she returned to avoiding him, continuing up the twisting road. Several tense minutes passed in silence. What a interesting girl. He hadn’t ever met anyone so eager to help out a stranger, that they would not only inconvenience themselves, but possible be put into danger. The whole concept was bizarre, yet very intriguing. She didn’t even seem to want anything in return, but then again, she still had time to ask. He turned, studying her. She wore basic dress suit attire, something one would find on a secretary, with a stark white blouse contouring well over her large breasts. Her long black hair lay flat, flowing halfway down her back, with perfectly cut bangs covering her forehead. Her sky blue orbs set beautiful against her cloud colored skin. There was something so very familiar about her eyes, he just couldn’t place it. She was young, and very innocent. “What is your name?” the question slipping through his lips startled even himself. “Oh, um, Hinata Hyuga,” she whispered, turning to face him locking with this gaze. “What’s yours?” “Sesshomaru,” he relied, before breaking the eye contact and facing out his window. The rest of the drive was spent in silence. ************ They turned down the long driveway nestled in between rows of tree blocking the view of Sesshomaru’s home and stopping in front of a domineering, grey mansion, with large white stones fitting like rounded puzzle pieces covering the face. Ivy crawled up the sides, giving it a much older appearance. As soon as the brakes finished squealing, Sesshomaru stepped out, grunting as he stood. Hinata opened her door and climbed out with ease. Hustling around, she came to the side of the him. “Here.” She extended her arm as support to him. “Not necessary,” he refused, stepping past her and onto the steps leading to a large, dark wood, door. She followed a few steps behind as he cautiously climbed the stairs, turning when he reached the top, hand on the large brass knob. “Yes?” He questioned the girl, wondering why she was still there. “Will you be okay?” she gestured her head towards his blood covered side. “Yes,” he said, covering the gash with his hand. “That’s good. I really would come in and help, but my boyfriend wouldn’t like it. He is going to be upset enough as is and….” He held his hand up, stopping her jabbering, letting her know that it was alright. “That is also not necessary.” “Oh, okay,” she said before climbing down the steps and back into her truck. She gave him a half hearted smile through her window before started down the driveway. He waited until she was out of sight and the truck could no longer be heard before he opened his door and walked inside. Pushing the large door shut, not bothering to lock it, he made his way across the foyer and down the long hall towards his bedroom. Tense labored breathing echoed through the hall, bouncing of the marble tile floor, filling the otherwise deathly quiet house. He had always lived like this, in peaceful solitude. He was perfectly content in giving up companionship if it meant he could escape the constant drama that came with relationships. He wasn’t sure how Inuyasha handled it, or why he would willing put himself in one train wreck after another. Sesshomaru refused to go through it. If he felt the need to have someone for the night, then he would pick up a woman, and be done with her by morning. He flipped on the light to the skimpily furnished, huge master bedroom, containing only the basic pieces of a large, oak bedroom set. Kicking off his shoes, he crossed the room into the bathroom. The daylight bright bulb light lit up the earth tone granite tiles, as Sesshomaru prepared for a shower. Turning on the water and sliding off his muddy jeans, only wearing dark blue boxer briefs, he examined himself in the mirror. The bruises were as bad as he thought, with a particularly bad one over his left ribs. He winced in pain as he explored the large purple lump. Foggy memories of a combat boot and brunet flooded back, filling him with rage. The kid had managed to crack a rib, maybe two. Breathing deeply, he turned to the shower now steaming over the top of the glass doors. He slid his boxers off and gathered his pants, throwing them in the hamper. Shirt?Where had his shirt gone? “Damn,” cursing at his own stupidity. He’d left it in her truck. Oh well, it was just a shirt. It was garbage now anyway. He climbed into the shower, sighing as the hot water melted him. A brickish color of mixed blood and dirt spiraled down the drain, as he stood waiting for the water to do all it could before carefully applying soap to his battered body. Soapy hands moved casually over tight skin, building a think lather as they went. Starting behind his neck, he slid the soap over his shoulders, down his chest, and slowly dipped across each ab muscle. Proceeding over his groin, with extra care, before continuing down his legs. Very meticulously, he cleansed himself, feeling the tension wash away, leaving him relaxed. Content with his work, and once again pristinely clean, he turned the shower off and wrapped a towel around his hips. The ringing of phone echoed through the virtually bare bedroom on the other side of the wall, grabbing his attention and he lazily made his way to it. “Yes,” he answered. “Shit man, where’ve you been? I have been blowing up your cell, which by the way is off now, it goes straight to voice mail, but you don’t even call me back. I mean, what the fuck?” Inuyasha’s voice seemed extra annoying today as he rambled on. “What do you want? I have had a long day,” Sesshomaru replied in the sternest tone he could muster. “Well, I’ve just been trying to warn you. I guess there are some guys looking for you. Three little punks have been noising around the Rogue Room asking about you. They’re driving some kind of rice burner, a orange one. They’ve been pissing a lot of people off. Even pulled a guns on the bartenders and the owner. What’s that guy’s name? Sen? No. It’s Sai, right? He called Dad, but swears he didn’t say shit. Just wanted you to have a heads up. You want me to come by, you know, in case something goes down.” “Not like you would be of much use,” Sesshomaru retorted, feeling offended at the idea of Inuyasha being his protector. He refused to admit it probably would have been helpful to get the warning early. Maybe he should have answered that call. “I don’t need help. Tell Father that I will not be coming in for the next few days. I need to take care of this.” “Fine. Don’t got to be a dick. I’ll let him know.” The phone line quiet. Sesshomaru hung up the phone and headed back into the bathroom. He still had a lot of patchwork to do before he went to bed, and he didn’t want to get blood on his Egyptian cotton sheets. ************** Hinata woke to sunlight pouring over her face and the sound of a phone ringing. She pulled herself out of bed and hurried into the kitchen. The small white corded phone hung against the cupboard holding the dinner plates. This one was the home line, and it seldom rang. It was the only phone in the house that she was allowed to answer. The black cordless phone connected to the ‘business’ line and, of course, Light’s cell, were strictly off limits. Most people that needed to get a hold of Light would call those lines. Aside from the random wrong number, Light was the only one that called the home line. “Hello? Is that you, Light?” she spoke quietly and apologetic, afraid he had already gotten word of her actions the day before. “Hinata, I was worried. Are you okay?” Light’s voice overflowed with relief. “You were worried?” Stunned and confused, she tried to process that idea. He had never spoken like that to her, especially in such an endearing tone. This didn’t feel right. “I heard about the murder. About the guy bleeding to death in the house up the road. I was so afraid something might have happened to you. Thank god you’re okay. Don’t worry, I’m coming home…….” The voice trailed off as the phone fell to the ground, followed shortly by Hinata. Landing on her knees, she shivered violently, tears forced their way passed fingers as her hands pressed over her eyes.
