Chapter 4
A small ray of sun peeked through the crack of the swaying curtains. As the ray of sunlight hit the face of the beds occupant they tried to roll away from it. Only to groan when the bed was further bathed in sunlight from the rising sun. Rolling over, ebony eyes glared at the swaying curtains and then looking up at the ceiling to glare at the fan. Sitting up, he ruffled his midnight black hair then stretched his arms to the ceiling and yawned. Not ten minutes later a shower could be heard running.
Wiping the steam away from the mirror, Sasuke stared at himself and wondered what he was supposed to do now. Naruto had left, though Tsunade said he would return Sasuke felt he would probably not come back for a while. Sasuke couldn’t hold it against him, not after everything. Not after all the harm he had done. He would have preferred for Naruto to have stayed and beat the crap out of him than leave—it was what he had been expecting. Hoping for if he was honest. That was the only time when the two of them seemed to be inclined to tell the truth.
He sighed and headed back into his bedroom to get dressed. Well his new bedroom for the time being. Apparently thanks to Pein’s destruction, the Uchiha compound and district had been pretty much destroyed. So now he was supposed to live in this apartment with some heirlooms and some clothes that must have been taken from the destruction. However who ever had brought some of the things here had left something behind. Something he planned to look for.
Sasuke looked outside of his bedroom and saw the anbu who had been assigned to watch him. The anbu had no intention of hiding himself—he had said as much the day before. If Sasuke remembered correctly he had been told “not to fuck up” and if he saw the anbu, the anbu “didn’t give a fuck either.” Of course the chicken shit anbu had only said as much when they were no longer in Tsunade’s office. Not that Sasuke gave a damn. While he may have returned willingly it didn’t mean he was planning to be a happy go lucky konoha villager or shinobi. At least not yet.
The apartment where he lived now was not very close to the Uchiha district. Sasuke had a feeling Tsunade would prefer to have him living closer to the administration. Just in case he went crazy or something he supposed. Of course it was much more preferable to staying in the dungeon or under house arrest. Also he couldn’t blame her, not after telling her what he had discovered. Shaking his head he dropped the curtain and walked to his closet. Opening the closet in search of something to wear, he found several of Itachi’s old clothes. He couldn’t help pulling one of Itachi’s shirts out and hugging it.
I’m sorry.
He grit his teeth to keep back angry tears and pulled the shirt over his head. Not only did none of his old clothes fit, he found some comfort wearing Itachi’s clothes. In the closet he also found some of his mother and fathers clothes as well. After he finished dressing he decided to explore the apartment he had been given.
As soon as he left his bedroom he was in the living and dining room. Outside the living room was a balcony that allowed him to see the Hokage Mountain. Seeing another door he decided to check it out since he had a feeling it wasn’t the bathroom connected to his new bedroom.
Why two bedrooms? He frowned as he looked into the second bedroom that was already furnished.
Closing the door, he bypassed the kitchen which he had already gotten acquainted with two nights before. An empty kitchen. To the right (or left) he discovered the washing room and another bathroom that was also connected to the second bedroom. Sasuke closed the door to the bathroom and turned around to look at his apartment. He thought it was strange that he would be given such a nice place. He knew it had to be his based on the fact that scattered around the apartment were Uchiha items. Then again another dead giveaway was the large Uchiha symbol painted onto the living room wall.
I’m going to have to repopulate the Uchiha bloodline. He touched the Uchiha symbol and sighed. It was the only reason he could think of.
Grabbing the key to his new home, he put on the sandals he had found and headed out. As he made his way to the Uchiha district he noticed he was being watched by the villagers. He would have assumed it was because he was an Uchiha, but he didn’t really think it was that. They seemed to be giving him a range from shocked stares to glares. He had not expected to have people greet him happily but he had not expected this type of hostility either.
The aromas of all the food from the different vendors was driving him crazy. He had not eaten since being locked in the cell the day he had arrived. That had been 3 days ago. Trying his best to ignore the alluring smells he quickened his steps. When he finally left them behind him he bent over and took a deep breath. Trying not to think about what the hell he was going to do without food he continued to the Uchiha district.
Putting his hands in his pockets he tried to not pay attention to the people walking around. Even though he hadn’t been back for a very long time his feet seemed to remember the way. Frowning he stopped, looked back then forward. Where was the Uchiha district? He kept walking looking around, seeing only more shops and villagers—who still continued to stare.
Sasuke stopped and stared as he saw what looked like an empty lot. Frowning he stared at the odd stone rectangular shape surrounded by cut grass. Sasukes eyes widened suddenly.
The Uchiha Nakano Shrine stone door!
Spinning around he looked at the surrounding buildings. No sign of any Uchiha symbol—all that he could see was the sharingan looking seal on the shrines stone door. He sighed.
Feels like the Uchiha have been eradicated from the Konoha village. He looked at the stone door. At least they didn’t try and remove—what?
Walking away from the stone door sealed atop the ground, he headed towards an unfinished building towards its right. Slowly walking up the two short steps of the building he continued to stare at its door. He traced the symbol that was engraved on the wooden door. The engraved symbol made sure that all who passed by the building would know it belonged to the Uchiha. Hesitantly he grabbed the door knob and turned it. It was locked.
Damnit. Sasuke clenched his jaw.
Sighing he let go of the door knob and looked around the neighborhood again. What was this the only unfinished building? He looked at the shrine stone door that was next to the unfinished building. While the shrine had not been rebuilt, it looked as if someone had turned it into a little memorial. It was surrounded by flowers and grass with only two clean cut pathways—one led to the incomplete building and the other to the street. He clenched his fist so tight he felt his palms sting. Closing his eyes he took a deep breath and let his fists unclench.
Looks like it’s gone then. Sasuke began to walk away from the house and memorial. The only thing I really wanted to keep.
Sasuke decided that if he wanted some answers there was probably only one person he could ask. Especially since he had no idea how to find Sakura or Kakashi without his chakra. He winced. He didn’t even know where they lived. Sighing he looked up towards the Hokage Mountain. He grit his teeth—the villager’s stares were really starting to get old. His stomach growled.
Fuck this.
He made his way to a secluded alley and climbed up the pipes to get to the roof. He ran across the roof and jumped onto the next building. He continued to jump from building to building until he finally reached his destination. Nevertheless, as soon as he jumped onto the Administration Division building he was surrounded by anbu. Without fully turning around he counted the ones in front of him and the ones behind him. There were six total—well at least the ones he could see.
Sasuke jaw clenched, he really hated not having his chakra.
“What are you doing here Sasuke?” The anbu in front of him with the mask of a cat asked.
Sasuke stared at the anbu who had spoken. He wondered if answering the question would actually matter. Would they actually help? Or just lock him up for having the nerve of coming without an invitation?
Decisions, decisions.
“What the hell is going on?”
Sasuke turned towards the Hokage Mountain and saw just the person he had come to see. The fact that she looked as if she was hung over, was not something he had particularly expected. When he began to walk towards her the anbu tightened the circle they had formed around him. Damn he really did not have time for this. He had too much shit going on already he didn’t need to be arrested for suspected assassination or something. He stopped and just stared at the fifth Hokage. Granted he was letting his pride get in his way but no way was he talking about anything in front of the fucking anbu.
“You’re not going to talk are you?” Tsunade’s eye twitched. Sasuke said nothing still. “Shit. Leave him be. Come on duck butt lets go.” Tsunade headed back inside the building to her office.
Duck butt? Sasuke jaw clenched again.
Only the anbu with the cat mask followed Sasuke as he headed towards the Hokage’s office.
“I would offer you a seat but I really don’t feel like calling someone to bring one.” Tsunade groaned as she slumped into her own chair.
“I don’t mind standing.” He glanced at the still present anbu. “But I would rather speak with you alone.”
“Yeah well too bad.” She stared at Sasuke. “When you first arrived here was the only exception. So why are you here now?”
Sasuke had a feeling with how often he kept having to clench his teeth he would be needing dentures soon. He had a good reason for coming to see Tsunade but somehow it still felt like he would be whining. He appreciated the fact that he had an apartment and several of the Uchiha heirlooms when he was in truth a traitor. However he would rather stay in the cell he had been locked in on the first day, if it meant food.
“So what is it you wanted?” Tsunade sneered. “Apartment not cozy enough for you?”
“If you dislike me this much why give me that place?” Sasuke couldn’t help but ask.
“I didn’t set it up.” Tsunade said in disdain.
Sasuke frowned. But who—
“Naruto.” Both of them said at the same time. Sasuke felt even worse than he had before.
He felt torn. He was so hungry he could feel the bile rise from the reacting acids in his empty stomach. He knew he needed to eat. Yet he questioned if he had the right to even ask for more than he had already been given. He even wondered if Tsunade had realized he was given no provisions or if it was all some sort of stupid test. When he had been with Orochimaru everything had been a test. Same with Tobi.
Tsunade’s expression suddenly changed from contempt to worry. Sasuke wondered if he had accidently expressed his unease on his face. The last thing he needed was pity.
But then that would just mean I’m acting arrogant. Again. Sasuke sighed. Which means I still haven’t changed.
“Leave.” Tsunade suddenly said.
Sasuke was so conflicted and upset that he almost left when she had spoken. He stopped himself when he realized she was looking at the Cat-masked anbu.
“But Lady Tsunade—”
“Don’t worry he had the chance to attack me when he first arrived. I’ll be fine. Beside his chakra’s sealed for now.” She reassured the worried anbu.
The anbu hesitated for a few seconds only to nod and leave quietly. While Sasuke had a feeling that he was not truly alone with Tsunade he was still grateful. Before he could stop himself he grunted and dropped to his knees.
Shit. So much for not being weak anymore.
“What the hell?!” Tsunade rushed over to Sasuke. “What’s the matter with you?”
Before Sasuke could answer her, his nausea got the better of him and he vomitted. He winced at the acidic smell. Great. All he needed now was to shit himself while he was at it.
“Sorry.” Sasuke apologized, noticing that he had accidently vomited on Tsunade foot. Tsunade looked at him in surprise before shaking her head.
“Don’t worry about it. When’s the last time you ate? I don’t think you’re anemic.”
“When you had me locked it that cell.” Sasuke chocked when he coughed and chuckled at the same time.
“What?!” She shouted. “Why haven’t you eaten?”
“Because I have had nothing to eat.” He had just finished saying when the same Cat-masked anbu appeared.
“Hokage-sama, what’s the matter? I heard—”
“Because you have had nothing to eat.” She repeated, ignoring the anbu.
Taking deep breathes to stop himself from vomiting again, Sasuke only nodded. Tsunade swiveled on her ankle to address the anbu.
“Where is Iguru?” She growled.
“He should have been watching Sasuke.” The anbu turn his head as if thinking. “I—”
“Bring him here!” Tsunade shouted. The Cat-masked anbu disappeared.
Tsunade helped Sasuke and took him into her private quarters behind her office wall. She had Sasuke sit at the round table that was in the room. She placed a bowl of fruit on the table in front of him. Sasuke grabbed an apple and began to eat when Tsunade started to boil water on the small stove. Unsure what she was doing he continued to eat.
Tsunade left whatever she was boiling on the stove to turn around and look at him.
“Is this the first day you’ve been out of that apartment?” She asked whipping her foot with a towel.
Sasuke nodded as he chewed the last of the apple in his mouth. Tsunade sighed and turned around to finish whatever it was she had been doing. Not really caring what she was doing Sasuke closed his eyes and rubbed his temple. He felt like his head was going to explode. Sasuke frowned when a familiar smell was suddenly under his nose. He opened his eyes and could only stare.
“Eat.” Tsunade said with a smirk. Sasuke continued to stare. “I have almost a life supply of them. Apparently he thinks they’re the best present to give someone for their birthday.” Tsunade chuckled.
Sasuke slowly grabbed the chopsticks she had also placed in front of him. There was only one person who would give this as a present. Only one person would think it was the best thing to eat in the entire world. Sasuke snapped the chopsticks to eat.
“Itadakimasu.” Sasuke said softly. The steam from the cup touched his face as he began to slurp the ramen noodles.
Even though he’s not here his presence is almost engrained everywhere.
Sasuke was almost halfway through with the instant ramen when Tsunade suddenly walked out of the room. He paused from eating when he heard Tsunade yelling in her office at someone. Sasuke was pretty sure it was about himself but what about exactly was a mystery to him. Even though he would like to know he couldn’t stop eating.
“What the hell have you been doing?” Tsunade glared at the Eagle-masked anbu.
“I’ve been watching the Uchiha as was ordered Tsunade-sama.” Iguru said stoically.
“And in that time Iguru have you seen SASUKE eat?” Tsunade said between clenched teeth.
“No.” Iguru shook his head.
“Why do you think that is?” Tsunade’s fist clenched.
“Well it seems he has no food.” Iguru shrugged. “Nor money to acquire it.”
No shit, you motherfucker. Tsunade took a deep breath.
The Cat-masked anbu stood way in the corner as if knowing something bad was soon about to happen. He looked around and wondered if Sasuke was in the room behind the wall. The hidden room was protected as a safe guard in case the Hokage needed a quick hiding spot. Or as Tsunade like to use it as her secret bar.
When he had heard Tsunade shout he had worried that Sasuke had done something stupid. To say he had been shocked when he saw a sick Sasuke being held by Tsunade would be an understatement. He had wondered what had caused it but listening to Iguru and Tsunade he was beginning to understand.
Iguru you bastard.
“Lady Tsunade I do not understand what the issue is. I was ordered to make sure the Uchiha—”
“Sasuke!” Tsunade interrupted.
“I was ordered to make sure Sasuke was ok and not causing any trouble. So what is the issue?”
Tsunade stared at Iguru in amazement. Surely this dumbass couldn’t be serious? Yet the way he spoke of Sasuke showed that he viewed him in the lowest regard. And with definite hostility.
“Just as you said Iguru you were ordered to make sure Sasuke was ok. But it seems you have failed your mission.” Tsunade began to unclench her fist slowly.
“But Sasuke has been fine. All he did was stay home and drink water from the kitchen faucet.” Iguru said sounding confused. Not realizing how far he was digging his own grave.
If looks could kill, the Cat-masked anbu was sure Iguru would have been withering on the floor under Tsunade blazing glare. If he had known how much Iguru disliked Sasuke he himself would have taken over his watch. He was pretty sure if Naruto were to know about this he would go ballistic.
“Tsunade-sama why can’t we just leave Sasuke in one of the cells? He is a nuke-nin after all.” Iguru said while crossing his arms.
“Tsunade-sama—”
Before the Cat-masked anbu could finish his plea, Iguru went flying out into the hallway. Taking a large chunk of the office’s wall and door with him. Tsunade was above Iguru before he could even grasp his baring’s. She grabbed him by his neck and slammed him against the curved wall of the hallway.
“You son of a bitch! He was only drinking water because he didn’t have anything else to eat! Your job was to make sure he was ok. You knew about his lack of food but deliberately ignored it! Then you have the fucking nerve to try and tell me how to do my job!” Tsunade yelled, completely ignoring everyone in the hallway.
“Who cares!?” Iguru gasped under her tight grip. “He’s a traitor to this village and Naruto!”
“What about you?” Tsunade sneered. “Are you not betraying Naruto by causing harm to a friend he has been desperately trying to save for over six years!?”
“If he cares so much about him then why did Naruto leave before seeing him!?” Iguru gasped again. Tsunade tightened her grip.
“Are you saying he ran away because he was scared?” When he didn’t answer Tsunade shook him. “Are you?”
Iguru shook his head. Tsunade let go of him and he dropped to the floor, banging his head of the wall. Tsunade turned around and glared at everyone that was in the hallway.
“And that goes for all of you!” She yelled. “Naruto did not leave because Sasuke has returned. He had other obligations before any of this came into effect! Sasuke may have been a nuke-nin and returned for his own reason. But! He is still from Konoha and he is still Naruto’s comrade. He is not to be treated with hostility. Do I make myself clear?”
Accepting everyone nod of agreement, she squatted in front of Iguru.
“Yes Hokage-sama.” Iguru said solemnly.
Tsunade turned to look at the silent anbu wearing the cat mask. He nodded, placed his palm of the broken wall and began to rebuild the hokage’s office wall and door. Once he finished he turned around to await Tsunade’s orders. He wondered who she would have watch over Sasuke now.
Tsunade opened the hidden door in the wall to see how Sasuke was, only to come face to face with him. She blinked a couple of times before moving so he could leave the hidden room. Sighing she walked back to her chair and dropped into it.
“You feel better now?” She asked while rubbing her temples.
“You know he has a point.” Sasuke said passively.
“While that may be true, what I said was also true. Naruto has spent a long time fighting to get you back. Even trying to set everything up so you would feel welcome when you returned.”
“Yes but he’s not here is he?” Sasuke asked rhetorically.
“True.” Tsunade answered anyway. “But like I said he always leaves around this time to Suna. Also he had a mission he was supposed to complete on the way there.”
“Hn.”
Oh great now he’s starting with his ‘Hn’s.’ Tsunade sighed.
“Pardon me but Sasuke,” The Cat-masked anbu interjected. Sasuke and Tsunade looked at him. “Naruto may have left but that does not mean he will not return.”
Sasuke stared at the anbu. He wondered why but he felt as if he had met this person before.
“Sasuke,” Tsunade spoked up. “Don’t worry. Also you have other things to think about before that anyways.”
Tsunade quickly wrote a missive and handed it to the anbu, who disappeared in a cloud of smoke.
“It’s funny I lectured Iguru about his treatment of you but I wasn’t much different was I?” Tsunade sighed. “I can already hear him screaming over all of this.”
Sasuke didn’t know how to respond. He had already known she wasn’t too crazy about him. He wondered about her belief that Naruto would be upset about everything. Would it really matter? While it sucked that all this had happened he still felt lucky that he was not simply executed. Which brought him again back to the idea that perhaps it was all thanks to Naruto. So then why wasn’t he here? Was going to Suna really that important? Then the full circle would be, did he really have any right complaining about Naruto leaving?
She also said I have other things to think about. Sasuke looked out the office window that overlooked all of Konoha.
Other things... He looked away from the window to look back at her.
“What exactly do you plan on doing with me?” Sasuke finally asked.
“What am I going to do with you?” She stared at him as he looked out the window.
Something on her desk caught her attention. She looked at Sasuke then back at the scroll she held in her hand. Tsunade smirked just as the Cat-masked anbu returned with Sai.
Perfect.
“It’s out of the question!” Koharu snorted, her eyes squinting more than usual.“I completely agree. What on earth made you think of doing such a ridiculous thing?!” Homura spat, shifting in his shared seat with Koharu.
Tsunade stared at the somberly aged council members. They sat across from her bathed by the light of the afternoon sun coming through the small window. With Danzo dead there were only two remaining council members—Koharu Utatane and Homura Mitokade. Tsunade clenched her jaw so tight her left eye began to twitch.
These fuckers need to die already. No one can surely live this long, right?
“Tsunade are you listening?!” Homura shouted.
“Being able to hear you is not the problem.” She grumbled.
“Tsunade there is no need to be crass. We are merely acting as your advisors.” Koharu sighed.
“Yes which means you may advise me on decisions like this. However,” Tsunade leaned forward to glare at her advisors. “In the end the decision is mine to make. And I have already decided to do this.”
“Then why bother with this meeting?!” Homura growled.
“Simply to inform you of my decision so in the future you wouldn’t complain about not hearing about it.” Tsunade sighed.
Homura and Koharu stared at Tsunade for a few seconds then looked at each other. They knew Tsunade was unafraid of accosting them if they tried to force her to do anything—especially where Naruto is concerned. They had learned that quiet well when Pein had attacked the village. They sometimes wondered when Tsunade would make the move to try and relieve them of being the hokage’s council.
“Very well but have you considered the possibility of the effect he could have on the children?” Koharu asked Tsunade.
“Yes I have. But I believe having him in that kind of environment may help him change.”
“While that may be possible the opposite could happen as well.” Homura sighed.
“It seems like what I told you before did not really change anything did it?” Tsunade scoffed.
“What are talking about?” Koharu asked in agitation.
“Didn’t I tell you that there is something Jiraiya, Sarutobi-sensei, and Lady Chiyo had that you will never have?”
“Yes I remember but that is not the p—”
“That is the whole damn point!” Tsunade shouted and leaped from her seat. “I told you that Naruto could beat Pein and he did! If I had listened to you then we would all be dead!”
“Yes but Sasuke is not Naruto, is he!?” Homura shouted back at her. Koharu remained silent and stared out the window.
“Even though the both of you were for the destruction of the Uchiha clan, you hope to have it revived right?”
Koharu and Homaru stared at Tsunade in shock.
“Don’t give me that look. You’re both too obvious.” Tsunade scoffed.
“You think having him be in touch with children will help in the Uchiha’s revival?” Koharu asked.
“I think it would help with a lot of things but I know that is the one thing you would be most concerned about.”
“Hmm.” Homaru rubbed his beard.
“What is it Homaru?” Koharu turned and looked at her old team mate.
“Are you sure that Sasuke even plans to revive the Uchiha? Why has he even returned?”
“Ah, yes. Tsunade you never explained the reason he has returned. Are you sure he did not come back with ill intentions?” Koharu asked.
Tsunade stared at the two council members. Everything Sasuke had told her made it even harder for her to remain civil with these two old idiots. She really needed to get new council members. However in order to do that she needed a good enough argument that would convince the daimyo.
There was a knock at the council members lounge door. Both council members looked at each other, then at Tsunade before permitting the one who knocked to enter. Tsunade held in her sigh of relief when she saw it was Shizune.
Saved! Finally I can get away from these old militants.
Tsunade tried to conceal her relief as best as she could. Waiting for Shizune to tell her she was needed back at the office.
“Excuse me Homaru-sama and Koharu-sama. Lady Tsunade you’re needed at the office.” Shizune said with a forced smile.
Liar. You know all too well I hate coming here. Shizune it looks like I owe you one again. Tsunade stood and excused herself.
She was on her way out when Homaru called after her. She turned to look at the still sitting council members.
Cheeky bastards.
“Yes Homaru-san.” She said sweetly.
“This matters is not over.” He said coldly.
“Oh but it is Homaru-san. I have already informed Sasuke and Urushi-san about it.” She said smiling coldly.
“I see. Then about the other matter. I expect to discuss that more thoroughly.” His eyes narrowed. “And I expect to discuss it before you take any action.”
You son of a—
“Of course Homaru-san. Good day.” Tsunade nodded and followed Shizune back to the Hokage office.
The council members were now in need of a new door knob.
